Don't major in Gender Studies. Major in STEM. It's a circlejerk for a reason. STEM is lucrative; other fields of study usually aren't.

But whether you go blue collar or white collar, learn something that is in demand - whether that's cybersecurity or accounting or underwater welding or petroleum extraction or HVAC repair or whatever.

Fun fact, a union electrician in a shitty state for unions can make $99,786 a year. If I moved to Las Vegas, that total becomes $179,963 a year.

All of my friends from highschool who got degrees in liberal arts areas (art history, shit like that) are still working barista jobs or fast food and we're in our 30s now.

Also union benefits include good health care that doesn't cost you money out of your check, a health savings account for boots, glasses, shit like that, and as of this year, paid time off which we historicslly have not gotten.

Also the last and best part, there's basically no women on the trades. You should hear how we talk to each other and what we can talk about without worrying about an HR rep.

Women aren't even struggling to get hired anymore tho. Companies hire women because it improves their image of being pro feminist and diverse. This is important as Women are the main consumer decision makers. Women are just constantly getting patted on the back for whatever. After spending a year in trade school, you've gotta do 6 years of apprenticeship, working for some contractor 6 to 7 days a week, 10 hour days, doing all the dangerous and disgusting jobs for $15/hr just to get your license... and then what? struggle trying to keep a company running for the rest of your useful life? at higher-risk jobs? higher risks of skin cancer, lung cancer, breathing in all that crap, and working in a profession with one of world's highest rates of suicide.

Don't take this meme seriously. Go to college. Get one of those jobs where you can sit on your ass and profit off of other schmucks' hard work. Because if you won't, you can bet your ass that women will.

I didn't go to college or trade school. I make 20-25k in a factory. I don't give a fuq, just like Mark, because I wanna be as close as possible to going Galt as I can. I don't know. I'd rather get a STEM degree. Trade jobes are exhausting and dirty in most cases. The trade guys (at least in my area) dont seem overly bright too. More like mindless drones for their wives. Of course the right picture is true. But a good degree beats any trade in my books. I'm in Germany though and college is much more affordable. Trade people here have a reputation of being too lazy to study up. Most of them can't solve linear algebra or calculus I problems properly either. I know more educated MGTOWs (they dont call themselves that, but I can clearly see how they're avoiding dating) than trade MGTOWs (my trade friends all have a baby on the way). Of course there are exceptions for everything. Just saying I'd rather be a programmer than fixing someone's toilet.

College can be a very good option, depending on your course of study. That is the critical point, as others have said already. Trade school, or a 2 year terminal degree have been shown time and again to be money well spent because of the increase in income. Whatever path you choose, do not make your high school diploma the end of your education.

I would love to get into HVAC but I'm not down with that working 60 hours a week shit, still might go to a trade school anyway, don't really care anymore, single and debt free I'll put in those 60-70 hours if I really have to.

I wouldn't mind looking at the other trades but HVAC is something that's been intriguing me recently.

I don't know anyone who thinks anyone is stupid for not attending college. It comes down to a simple thing: Does what you are studying for fill a need? You can send everyone to tech school, but if those graduates aren't fulfilling a need, they won't get hired.

So, it is better to either do something you might not care for that fills a need or do something you love. Personally, I err on the side of doing something you love and finding a way to get paid for it. Which I did (I chose teaching).

I am 54 and work in the CNC - Machine Shop - Manufacturing sector. This industry is desperate for young people.

Its it hard dirty work and you will start on 3rd shift, But let me tell you a story about one guy I know.

He started out of high school on third shift loading parts into a CNC machine. The company offered to pay for CNC programming and CAD design classes at the local trade college. 8 years later he is the lead CNC programmer which is basically telling the machines how to make the parts, drill holes here, put a groove in a part here.

He makes $110,000 per year. No college Debt..... There is also plumbers, Electrocutions, all of these industries are looking for people.

If anyone’s looking into this try to go elevator. Hardest union to get into, you do a little of everyother trade. But we are the highest paid by far. As an apprentice in the LOWEST paid union in the country I clear over 120k a year.

Paid time off, all over time is double time (no time and a half ever), amazing healthcare that is 100% funded by the company, 15 dollars an hour on top of hourly rate directly into a 401k and full pension. I came from the military and the benefits are far surpassed in this trade than even that. I’ve had months I’ve cleared more than 20k and still had weekends off.

Majoring on STEM seems to be a popular advice. At the T part, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you really love it (which I do, but there are other things in life too) or is a walking brain (I'm not ). Its not uncommon for me to see average construction workers getting better payment and quality of life than programmers. The only drawback that I see in it is to be physically demanding. But then, the IT industry is highly emotionally and mentally demanding, so.

I know some people reading this will say that NITJALT(not IT jobs are like that), that he is passionate about they do, that there is more demand than programmers available, etc. Congratulations, I'm happy for you and wish you all the best. Exceptions does not disprove a rule, though.

I'm in HVAC. 15 month program and while the education wasn't the best, it still beats wasting my time for most degrees at a 4 year college. My current coworker is going to college for a 2 or 3 year program for power plant operation, and that is one of the few things I can think of that will most definitely beat my degree in the long run regardless of how much it costs.

You could even bypass school and get a mentor in a field such as plumbing or electrical and do really well after a few years on the job without school debt.

Hell, if you think you’re good with people you could sell life insurance and be making a killing before 30. Buddy of mine did this straight out of high school. He had to live at his parents house until he was 22-23 but before he was 30 he had a chauffeur driven car and a place by the beach. At 40 he goes into the office and makes 10 phone calls from referrals existing clients give him, plays around on the computer, goes to lunch and is done for the day. No joke.

I highly recommend college but there’s ways to get to the brass ring without it. Being married will keep you from obtaining excellence.

I really don't get this growning sense of anti-intellectualism among millennial men. If you want a professional job (white collar) you need a degree just to get your foot in the door. You'd be hard pressed to find someone in an upper level management or executive position at a large company that dosen't have a degree. I get that you can make a good income breaking your back in a trade, but that dosen't mean that a college degree is a waste of time. It always seems like it's the guys that didn't go to college that go on about how worthless it is. In any case, it really has more to do with how you apply yourself. I have an "I.T." degree from a state school and will be making 120k this year in a low cost of living metropolitan area putting me in the upper middle class for the area. Not all I.T. jobs are the same, sure there are some entry level helpdesk jobs that pay $10 an hour, but corporate or government I.T. still pays pretty well. Remember that I.T. is the engine that runs most companies, I.T. folks often have the highest level of access, work closely with executives from all business units, and design many of the business processes. I.T. isn't just about fixing computers.

Here's the part nobody really seems understand no one wants to discuss. Young men simply don't want to work anymore. This notion that your average 22-year-old soy boy who's never done anything more strenuous than tie his shoes is going to HVAC school so he can make $12 an hour out in the blazing sun is just ridiculous. It's the Kardashian effect. They see people on Instagram making money for doing virtually nothing or people on reality shows playing morons making millions of dollars and go why should I go work like a dog for peanuts for some asshole boss?

Plus here's the dirty secret of working in the trades nobody tells you. It's really great when you're young because you're making what you figure is okay money and you doing something physical. But before you know it you're 55 and all you've done is hang sheet rock your whole life. Now your knees and your back are shot you really don't have any other skills you're still making's maybe 50-60 grand a year. Then what?

It's not talked about but we're going to have a real crisis in a few years when there simply is no one to do the "Hidden dirty work" of society. Somebody has to be a car mechanic, a garbageman, work on high tension wires, work the third shift at the sewage plant, drive dump trucks, etc. This is all necessary work to keep our society running and at some point in time there's going to be no one to do it. Not everybody can work at Google or be a graphic designer.

That's why it's always infuriating when you stories like well we need to have the illegal immigrants here to do the work that Americans won't do. That's an incomplete sentence. If the jobs paid a decent wage you have no trouble finding people to fill them. When the CEO of Chipotle makes more than the CEO of Goldman Sachs but people have to file a class-action lawsuit against them because they force people to work off the clock cause they can't budget of another $50 per store so one more person can close you know that the system is broken.

Not only are trade schools are underestimated, but also non-traditional (these days anyway, but traditional years ago) education in the crafts. It is still possible to become an apprentice by just offering to start work for free in a shop or with a master and learn something really unique and valuable.... I did this years ago with musical instrument repair, and am still at it as a self-employed person.

This is absolutely brilliant, still, a university education is still very valuable and not to be downplayed. It all depends on what you major in, and working a technical job isn't as good as memes like this make it seem. My father works a technical job and makes more than 70k, and after some quick maffs I calculated that my fathers job makes enough to basically fulfill my aspirations in the future and I began regretting not following in his footsteps and going for a graduate degree instead; all without the several years I will spend in university paying money and going into debt. Here though, is where the difference is. My father doesn't get to enjoy his money; very little free time and always far away from home, always comes home dirty, exhausted etc whereas someone with a proper university education will earn their money and ultimately enjoy their salary and the lifestyle it provides. I just fell like an overload of memes like this has had an impact on my generation opting out of higher education (which is hilarious because they wouldn't last a day as a technician or in a blue-collar profession). Just some food for thought; some people are complete idiots and get worthless degrees, but at the same time not everyone can survive in blue collar and those in blue-collar don't always have the nicest lives...

I will never understand this obsession with hating on non STEM degrees and I’m glad I ignored it. I did double bachelors and double masters in philosophy and linguistics, learned 3 languages and at the fourth year am making 6 figures in a job I can do from home on my own schedule. If you want to be a plumber, fine and if you’re lazy and unmotivated, most degrees won’t get you a job instantly but there is a great deal to be said for a broad education in topics which are not strictly geared toward vocational training.
