Remember: Doesn't matter what happens, according to feminism women are always the victims, men are always the to blame.
Remember this Hillary Clinton gem? "Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat." It's like men aren't even human beings.
Anything to fuel the narrative.

Feminists are terrible at communicating ideas through comics.
Initially, I thought it was supposed to be a man shaving and he saw himself as a singing woman in the mirror, and it's misogynistic because he's incompetent at shaving, so he sees the woman as incompetent or something... Yeah, that makes no sense, but it was the only way I could start to piece together some vaguely human shape in front of a mirror with what looks like a razor seeing a singing woman in the mirror with the headline that male incompetence is misogyny lol.
I guess it's easier if you've already been trained to view everything in certain terms, but then what's the point if you're trying to convince non-brainwashed people who aren't primed to apply ideological bias to everything?

I can't blame Hillary for saying that if she's pandering to her desired audience because isn't that kind of what politicians do? Would need more context to make a judgement

[–]Jammersault 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Everyone is aware of what politicians get up to. Pandering to say, old retired voters by giving them a financial break in the lead up to an election is one thing.....pandering to a bunch of spoiled rabid man hating feminist cry babies by making statements like "women are the primary victims of war etc etc" is a different level of pandering all together when you take into consideration how utterly disrespectful and ignorant and just bloody wrong the statement is.
[–]michaelscottspenis 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
As a veteran of OIF and OEF I don't let things like that bother me. I don't play oppression Olympics either. I don't let stupid comments like that trigger me. I just roll my eyes and get on with my day. That said, ever spend a day in Afghanistan or Iraq? Not a good place for a woman, even in peace time. Ever hear about what happened to German women when the Russians came through? Let's not pretend like people like don't pander when they say they're going to build a wall when anyone with half a brain knows that 1) that wall will never go up. And 2) It won't alleviate the fact that the vast majority of undocumented immigrants come into the country totally legally and overstay their visa. Now, you may say that's making a false equivalence, buts it's really not. HRC is pandering to her base, the insufferable feminists. But Trump, like other politicians who champion other issues, pander to theirs. Don't act like one side is more righteous than the other. Use your brain.
[–]Jammersault 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well I don't disagree with much of what you said. I'm not arguing that either side is more righteous, I didn't mean to be taken that way. I did qualify my comments by saying I'm not from the States and I know I don't know everything. It was a world event though. I was actually laid up with a broken leg and watched a lot of it leading up. I know it's easy to say but it didn't surprise me thsg Trump won, not blowing my own trumpet (pun intended) but I did let my feelings known about how I thought Trump could win well before he did it's easy to say that now but that's honestly what I thought. And I said the reasons what I thought that before. I honestly thought Hillary just thought she was going to win (everyone knows that right), where Trump kind of accepted what he was up against. Going into technicalities about what he'll actually do compared to what he said he'll do can probably be applied to most politicians too given they all seem to struggle to get policies through the relative parliaments, especially these days. That said, i do use my brain, I wasn't claiming to know everything, but there was clearly a difference to the shit the 2 candidates were pushing to the masses. Hillary undeniably used the female victim narrative, naively thinking that the majority of Americans would fall for it. She failed. Whether Trump builds the wall or not, he won. Is there anything there I haven't used my brain on champ?
[–]michaelscottspenis 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh I knew she'd lose. Especially after that stunt her and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz pulled with the DNC. She lost the Bernie supporters (I include myself in that demographic). I even have to admit that despite knowing she was/is vastly more qualified for the position, all she would have done was maintain the status quo. My hope, and so far this is succeeding, is that Trump will fuck this up so badly that it'll essentially break the system and cause this country to rethink some things.
That being said, we're getting off topic.
This goes back to pandering. HRC panders to her base, feminists that have a victimhood mentality and DJT panders to his, racists and ignorant fuckheads. My beef with people getting upset over her comment about war is that they can't make that connection that every politician does the same thing. It's what they do. Instead, they want to play pain Olympics like the fucking crybabies they think they're better than. So in short, "don't hate the player, hate the game".
[–]Jammersault 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'm not sure what those acronyms are for either, but it sounds like you've been in the forces and if that's the case I honestly thank you for you service. I know there is many sides to everything and all honour to the people in our defence forces !!!

You don't need to thank me for my service. I appreciate the gesture. But you really don't have to. Nothing I did impacted you, or anyone, just corporations. OIF = Operation Iraqi Freedom OEF = Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan).
[–]Jammersault 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah mate, I know I don't have to thank you and what you've done hasn't directly affected me but I'm very aware of how terribly ex service people have been treated by governments. it's happened wholesale in my country too. It isn't new either, as you said all politicians do the same thing. Hillary's comment is just one comment, but it did become a talking point and was kind of a 'thing' that might have struck to her privileged attitude that's all. I definitely don't hate the player, I get what you're saying though, I've not been in the forces myself but I have family members who are and have been. My grandfather fought in WW2 and died young and depressed. All respect mate, you're right about the system needing rebooting. When I seen the shit that Hillary threw at Bernie I thought it would come back to bite her. I seen a couple of very impassioned speeches Bernie made at the UN about not going into Iraq......you could see the passion that he had, I thought he was s pretty good bloke and Hillary shat all over him with the same shit she tried to beat Trump with pretty much. I didn't think staunch Bernie fans would have liked all that very much. Just out of interest, would it matter that much if by 'some miracle' that Trump actually did some good ?
[–]michaelscottspenis -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You guys crack me up. You're just as bad as these feminists you hate. You're playing oppression Olympics here. You're doing the same thing the people you hate are. [–]Jammersault 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
While it's easy to understand the pathetic reasoning behind selling horseshit to appeal to the masses of progressives that will believe anything, who do you blame for it then? Who is to blame for Hillary, her statements, who is to blame for what Hillary stands for if you don't blame Hillary then?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
She is certainly responsible for her actions, but is she not supposed to cater to her target audience?
That's what politicians do, it's well understood that this is what all politicians generally do, but all that statement does in regards to Hillary if you accept what a grub she is, is make her supporters look as bad as she is then doesn't it. We know universally that pollies play (pander) to the voters, so that applies to all of them. Not to be deliberately nitpicky, but you said you can't blame her, then you said she is certainly responsible. The way I see it is, yes they all pander to get votes, but some people will stoop way lower with the level of pandering and who they pander to. Hillary thought she could get away with her grubby tactics because she was a woman, and so did a lot of other people.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Honestly I don't follow politics very much, but if Hillary is stooping lower than others, which I don't think she was stooping lower than Donald Trump's racist campaign rhetoric from what little I've seen, then she does deserve criticism for it. I guess my earlier statement about not being able to blame Hillary was a copout, fair enough. They are both tasteless soul suckers, and to me the entire job of being a politician is to say what people want to hear. It's the sensible, though certainly not very ethical, way to do things
Yeah and I agree with you in the main too. The entire political landscape throughout the entire western world has become a joke. I'm from Australia, the system is so broken here, it's a shame because people really want good strong leaders to look up to, but no one is there. You could hardly blame a lot of great people with lots to offer from avoiding politics all together. It's almost like all the worthy candidates couldn't be bothered with the shit show of it all and we're left with what we're left with. I'm not rowing Trumps' boat really, but I think the difference was that at least Trump didn't treat people with contempt. He put himself there, he knew that the lefty media was going to drag everything on him and give Hillary a main stream media pussy pass the whole way through. Trump put himself there, said what he had to say, copped the criticism that came with it and was prepared to let the people make up their own minds. I don't think worldwide politicians have been doing this very much in the last little while. There seems a very left wing progressive influence across both major parties here in Australia, conservatives are leaving the Liberals (Conservative party) and joining up with conservative independent candidates, voters and the public are about as disillusioned as you can get. I don't really see Donald Trump as racist, I know the media tried to paint his campaign that way. I don't think Trump hates Mexicans and women and Muslims either. I know the media painted it that way too. I do think that Trump wants to truly make America a better place for the American people, it seems that way to me and it seems that there are quite a few yanks that agree. Lots of women voted for Trump also. So much of it is bullshit and misinformation, and I think this is what people are sick of. People want the truth and want to be allowed to make their own mind up. People are sick of being lied to and moralised over. Imagine how much Trump may have won by if the media wasn't almost entirely biased towards a Hillary presidency? I don't live in the US so I don't have a right to vote anyway, but I do see world politics commonly being basically overrun by progressive left politicians and I think that's where the rub is. Basically the gulf that now lies between the right and what has become of the left. Just a few thoughts mate, cheers !

Source for those of you who don't want to just look at a vague picture and title: http://metro.co.uk/2017/11/01/male-incompetence-is-a-subtle-form-of-misogyny-7046248/
I really don't understand the author, she acknowledges at one point that she has had boyfriends who have been better than her at common housework duties but then she returns to her misandristic narrative.
But those who choose to remain ignorant and then ask their girlfriends, wives, partners to do it for them are participating in a very subtle form of misogyny that burdens women with low-level emotional labour.
She intentionally added the word "partner" to show that it's not a gender issue then she immediately returns to misogyny. I just don't understand...

But those who choose to remain ignorant and then ask their girlfriends, wives, partners to do it for them...
Right, because a woman has never used her sexuality to get a man to do a job she was already perfectly capable of....
From simple things like reaching to top shelves because women are too lazy to get a stool, to fixing ANYTHING that uses electricity, or petrol, or effort....
what does it say about "chivalry" when a woman expects a man to be a "gentleman" by helping her achieve the smallest of tasks, from opening doors, to pulling out chairs, to even paying for their own dinner dates ?
It's "mansplaining" when we explain things you already know, but it's "being a chivalrous gentleman" to do things for you that you already can do for yourself ?
When are these women going to stop being helpless and incompetent and become trash collectors, and carpenters, etc ?
Oh that's a dirty, dangerous, boring job? That's a man's role eh ?
These women want to complain about male "incompetence", even when these women are feigning incompetence themselves just to get a free ride from men.
So when men are chivalrous, and treat women to free rides, they're oppressing women o.O ??
So be it ladies, you can work just as hard as men and do your own things, seeing as our help isn't appreciated.
Cue the bitching "Waaaahh! i'm overworked and expected to do everything myself, where are all the good men to help a lady out ?"

[–]orcscorper 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Misandry isn't a thing. It's a bullshit term made up by males as a response to misogyny, which is ubiquitous. Suggesting that women are bad at things is misogyny; suggesting that men are bad at things is also misogyny. Any suggestion that men and women are different in any way is misogyny, unless you are praising women for being better at everything despite all the misogyny they have to face every day. Why do you hate women so much?

I bet not, I bet it's a one way street to this author
[–][deleted] 63 points64 points65 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
This bugs me so much. They complain that men don't do enough bathroom cleaning, laundry, organizing, etc, etc. And this is always the man's fault. But they never suggest that women should learn basic plumbing, how to change a tire, how to mow the lawn, how to get up on the roof and clean the gutters, etc, etc, etc. And if you bring up the fact that they don't do these things and their husbands do, they blame gender roles and the oppression of women! Not the women themselves.
[–]HeForeverBleeds 56 points57 points58 points 8 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
That's because they want men to do traditionally feminine work and men to do traditionally masculine work. You see, they just want to do less work. They want men to share the burden of traditional feminine roles, while women remain spared of the burden of traditional masculine roles
It's the same with how they want women to make up 50% of, for example, CEO's or other high-paying jobs, but then still want men to pay for dinner
[–]StorkKing 22 points23 points24 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Feminism is starting to look suspiciously like a movement to eliminate all responsibilities from women while placing all burdens on men. You could even call it toxic femininity, since this is not so much a rejection of traditional gender roles as an expansion of them. Some feminists are even trying to eliminate female prisons. So we're entering a situation where women have more rights than men, more privileges than men, yet increasingly with the responsibilities of children. And at the same time men and boys are accused of being privileged oppressive rapists.
How in the fuck is society supposed to function like this?
This is NOT going to end well for women unless they start speaking out against this madness. Feminism has become a supremacist hate movement, and may well have even started that way.
It's now or never ladies.

Who’s the incompetent?
When my future wife heard how fussy I am about how I like my shirts she said “I’m not going to do your laundry.”
I replied “Oh no you are not.”
lol I actually am an incompetent house wife, but I have to do that stuff anyways because I'm unemployed so I'm home and he's not, so I just do it and take the criticism if I mess up. I'm getting better at cooking and keeping track of deals in the newspaper and what not.
But I agree with you. If you are that fussy about something you better do it yourself. Most chores are not that hard to get to a basic level of cleanliness. I don't even think the men depicted in the article are incompetent, it's probably more like a woman who had delusional standards of cleanliness so she magnifies the problem, when really he is doing just fine.
[–]Doctor_Loggins 19 points20 points21 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nope. Internalized misogyny.
[–]InhabitantOfOddworld 94 points95 points96 points 8 years ago (41 children) | Copy Link
What a prattling load of crap.
You know, the lazy dad trope really bugs me. If you go back before the 1950's, women were often the comic relief. Once you get to the 60's and onward, it changed to be the incompetent husband and the put-upon wife.
All these types we know; Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Hank Hill, basically any male character in any western world sitcom (the 3 guys from Friends as well) are all portrayed as incompetent and inept.
Clearly the author's anecdotes here are mixed. She knows some guys well-skilled and capable, and she knows the lazy and stupid types. We all know this, we men come of a very wide distribution of Darwinian variance.
But the author keeps pushing the narrative that I think is far more informed by media that pushes a somewhat anti-male narrative than it is by real people she's known.
But, alas, it's more of the same. The same kind of bullshit we have to put up with. You know, because Men's Day is every day apparently. Yay for us...
[–]Diesel-66 63 points64 points65 points 8 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

[–]InhabitantOfOddworld 43 points44 points45 points 8 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Seriously. How did we get to the point where we shifted from the characters' unique traits serving as a vehicle to explore new situations and deliver punch lines to, the characters' unique traits ARE the punch line.

[–]InhabitantOfOddworld 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
In my opinion, the 60's screwed everything up. Men became weak, women became crazy, the African-Americans got put on welfare and had their culture ruined (not my own take, heard guys like Tommy Sotomayor talk about it).
I don't know if a lot is deliberate. I think a lot of it comes down to changes in diet and the birth control pill, but that's just my own "biological determinism" as the Rad-Fems call it.

[–]InhabitantOfOddworld 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
No. This difference is that they're not smart. They make vague references to sci-fi and fantasy pop-culture, maybe the occasional pop-science factoid, and then you queue the laughing track.
What you actually have is a group of guys, all socially inept and unsuitable to living their own lives autonomously, being laughed at because the humour is made intentionally to derive from their own personality and character traits. One is even autistic, a disorder that affects men far more than it does women (a ratio of 1 woman to 4 men diagnosed)
Yet, if you look at a women's comedy, they're never made fun of unless it's intentionally wanting to derive empathy.

Depends on show. Golden girls and others often made fun of the one for being a slut.
Can't say I've ever seen it, not properly, but it's certainly cast with women of a certain age and likely marketed to a similar audience.
I'd love to see what a comedy with the usual bitchy 20-somethings would do if they tried to make the same slut jokes. It'd be all over Vox and Salon before you can say misogyny.

I stopped watching after a few seasons, but Penny wasn't put together. She constantly needed to borrow money, did stupid shit like letting her car break down by ignoring the engine light, couldn't afford her nice apartment because she was doing things like signing up for cable and needed help figuring it out , etc.

I don't know about the women who work with Sheldon. I stopped watching after about season 4. I saw a few episodes in the later seasons where the guys have girlfriends but the girlfriends were usually taking care of the guys. I guess they might have changed the show dynamic.

I agree. King of the Hill felt like a much more fleshed out, not cliched show. Those characters had actual depth and Peggy Hill is one of the most well done annoying characters of all time
[–]orcscorper 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Mike Judge is woke, if I can steal a stupid, grammatically atrocious term from SJWs. Hank Hill has his idiosyncrasies, his blind spots and his flaws, but his heart is true. He sells propane and propane accessories, and is good at what he does. He has a rock-solid belief system, and his response to every situation he finds himself in is based on who he truly is, not what he wants people to think of him.
Peggy is a typical woman. She is a substitute Spanish teacher who is terrible at speaking Spanish. She thinks she is better at everything than she really is. We all know women like this, because most women are like this.
[–]JackGetsIt 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Still kind of an example of the problem. Hank was incredibly competent with almost everything he did but mocked constantly. Peggy was incompetent but always forgiven for it.
[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
When was Hank mocked constantly?
[–]JackGetsIt 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Peggy and Bobby both seem to lightly mock him and the show is kind of a light mocking of him. His dad certainly mocks him.
ahh that. well hank's dad isn't exactly a heroic figure though. it is interesting though that for all the stuff cotton hill was, he wasn't exactly racist. Even though he was a WWII veteran in a theater which basically was a race war.
[–]BigAl265 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's been a problem for a long time now, men being depicted as bumbling idiots who can barely wipe their own asses without the keen oversight of their beautiful, intelligent, unappreciated, saint of a wife. It was probably twenty years ago when I first started noticing how sexist and misandric TV shows and commercials were becoming, it really made me angry. Now, after raising a generation of boys being told they're incompetent morons, incapable of toasting bread, much less operating a washing machine, they have the nerve to spew even more misandry because they're sexist lessons stuck? Pardon me, but go fuck yourselves. Seems like every time feminists get what they wanted, they realize they fucked up and somehow make it the fault of men.
[–]CzechoslovakianJesus 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Im fairly certain that TV is the way it is because women watch a vastly disproportionate amount of it so producers and advertisers cater hard to them.
[–]kellykebab 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
This is demonstrably true of day time TV, but I doubt prime time.
[–]orcscorper 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Look at the numbers. Women watch way more TV than men. They also control over 70% of household spending. TV ads are directed towards women, and TV programs are designed to get women watching.
The difference between prime time and daytime TV? They know that no man watching daytime TV has any money to spend, so they drop the pretense of catering to everybody, and air the trashiest, most pandering shows they can.
[–]thumperson 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]kellykebab 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
According to this Nielsen report, men watch about 90% as much traditional TV as women. (They also watch significantly more internet TV).
Those figures don't suggest to me a reason to dramatically orient programming more to women's tastes than mens'.
I do find a variety of figures for women's spending power, but it does sound generally greater than men's. I could see how that might influence programming decisions.
I don't really pay strong attention to current network programming, but it seems like there are quite a few popular cable shows that cater more to men's tastes (e.g. The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire).
I'm not convinced that TV is geared towards women across the board.
[–]orcscorper 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Gearing TV to women across the board would be a silly idea. There will always be sports, news, comedies and dramas that appeal to men more than women. Pay TV is definitely skewed towards men, because men will pay for PPV boxing, UFC and WWE, and premium sports channels. There is a market for such programming, and shows like Game of Thrones and Sopranos precisely because so much commercial television is oriented towards women.
If you take sports out of the equation, that 90% figure probably drops to 50%. Most scripted programs are written for women, and reality TV is tremendously skewed towards women's tastes. For every Monster Garage or Deadliest catch, there are dozens of Cake Wars, Dancing With the Stars, Toddlers With Tiaras and other female-focused dreck.

This isn't anything uniquely "male." Every one of my female relatives expects the men to fix the computer, configure the TV, repair the car, etc. They choose not to learn how to do it, and expect someone to do it for them.
And we do, because nobody can be good at everything. It's good to specialize. It's not "emotional labor." It's called being in a relationship.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I keep hearing I handle all the emotional labor in the relationship because I keep track of who is running out of medication, who has doctor appointments when and what time, what we're doing for which holidays are coming up, etc. I also do most of the cleaning, dishes, laundry, and most of the care relating to the baby.
But you know what? My boyfriend repairs things around the house, works full time (I work part time), handles issues with the car and the computer and anything else like that, and pays the bills (I do pay my share, he just takes it out of my account). He also cooks because I suck at cooking.
To me this seems like a pretty fair division.
[–]orcscorper 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, that's pretty fair. Your boyfriend works full time, cooks, and handles household repairs? Your girlfriends saying you handle all the "emotional labor" are just jealous. They try to tear him down because they wish they had what you have. When they start that, just mention the last meal he cooked and the last repair he did. Ask if their men cooked them a meal that tasty and repaired the thing as promptly and skillfully. They will probably get real quiet, then go home and ask their men why they don't do for them what your man does for you.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
What's this "emotional labor" buzzword I'm recently starting to see so much?
[–]kellykebab 19 points20 points21 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Some feminists have brainwashed themselves into such a state of bitterness that being kind and caring is too difficult to do for free.
[–]warsie 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It is a difficult thing and is a real thing.
Okay. Give me an example.
[–]tankerton 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Being someone to talk to when you've undergone trauma, like losing someone close to you. The person who regularly checks in with you, undergoes the stress of being an untrained therapist, and helps provide the survivor with the basics so they can heal better/quicker.
Or a more relevant example, dealing with the creepy family member at Thanksgiving.
The concept isn't really new. Your emotions can be taxed just like your muscles. There's a reason therapists are mandated to talk to other therapists.
It's been popping up more and I think it's being overblown in some ways but it is a valid concept.
[–]kellykebab 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Who does this? Are you just talking about being a close friend with somebody? I don't know anyone that I would turn to who would play the part of an amateur therapist.
Your emotions can be taxed just like your muscles.
I agree with this. I suppose I can see how "emotional labor' is a distinct type of activity. My issue is more with how this idea is applied. If you are categorizing your interactions within a relationship as emotional labor, you're either in a one-sided relationship to begin with or you are incredibly petty and uncaring. Nice GuysTM perform "emotional labor" to attract otherwise unresponsive women. Does their labor actually have a value?
The danger in over-identifying this concept is that we turn highly nuanced, psychologically-complicated human interactions into very simplistic transactions. If you have been somewhat more attentive to your spouse than vice versa, the healthy approach would be to express your needs and request that they pay more attention. The unhealthy approach would be to state that you have been doing more "emotional labor," and therefore your partners "owes" you something. That's a really easy way to turn a reciprocal, cooperative relationship into a cold business partnership.
[–]tankerton 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah, I do mean close friends or family. They do perform therapy albeit in an extremely different way than professionals. I just wanted to use a clear example of someone who temporarily undertakes stressors for the sake of another in a healthy relationship.
I specifically wanted to provide an example that's completely decoupled from this specific discussion. Say what you want about the recent usage and its impact. The concept is legit and shouldn't be discredited based on some people stretching the definition.
[–]kellykebab 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I just looked up the Wikipedia page for this concept and was surprised to see it discussed the term virtually entirely within the context of the workplace. That seems pretty reasonable. I actually found a lot of the ideas in that article to be pretty enlightening.
So yeah, I guess my gripe is more directed towards seeing the concept applied to friendships and intimate relationships. I don't think it's healthy to keep a running tally of how often you were nice to your boyfriend when you weren't in a good mood. That's just part of being in a relationship.
[–]IAmTheDos 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's a buzzword to disguise from the fact they are complaining about having to think. There is already an accurate term for this, mental strain, but they can't pretend that mental strain is exclusive to women. Whereas, despite all the halfhearted calls for men to become more emotional and open up about their feelings more, feminists still insist that woman hold a monopoly on almost all of human emotion.
[–]warsie -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Emotional labour is more specific than mental strain and its bot only something fenslrs deal with
[–]p3ngwin 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
basically a made-up currency they want to say is more valuable than everything else.
It's harder being a woman, therefore her efforts are disproportionately more valuable for the same work, etc
All this while simultaneously insisting there are no differences between men and women and we're all the same.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's a way for feminists to equate basic domestic shit like cleaning your house or supporting your loved ones, with the real, skilled work that goes into building a society -- like welding and scaffolding and shit.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]elebrin 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think in many cases it comes down to one of several things:
Firstly, many men simply do not see value in the task at hand. I've had roommates who eat out of can for every meal. They eat a healthy amount and make good food choices, it's just that everything comes from a can or box. The food isn't great but it is low effort and gets the job done. Then, along comes the girlfriend who says that isn't good enough, then gets pissed when her boyfriend can't cook. He places a very low value on eating homemade food - he's always just eaten out of a can, the freezer, or whatever. The solution here is to manage your partner's expectations - "Well before I met you this is how I ate and cleaned, I consider it good enough, if you want something else you are welcome to do it yourself."
Secondly, many people are very competent at a task but they do it in a completely different way than then some others and those others may consider that totally unacceptable. The only solution I know of for this is to have no expectations when someone does me a favor. Say thank you and be grateful, then either fix it if it really matters or just leave it be and let it be good enough.
Thirdly, some people (many men too) won't consider a task done good enough unless they basically do it themselves. They don't see anyone else as capable of what little thing it is they want to control and will throw a temper tantrum about how someone did something if they weren't consulted every step of the way. These people just have to be avoided. Maybe they will get better, but not without significant effort on your part.
[–]zurrain 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So says the sex that routinely puts together "honey-do" lists for tasks they are too incompetent to complete.

Absolutely awful article. I really pity any woman who reads this and then finds herself single after treating her boyfriend like garbage. Probably not quite the point of the post, but what is it with feminists and trying to take away peoples personal agency? 'ever been with a man who cant cook? It might not be his fault. He was raised that way.' Like, why cant people just be tools who never got off their asses to learn something essential? Why does it always have to be the damn patriarchy?

Women like separation of labor for masculine responsibilities and shared labor for their responsibilities. This is why women love to act so put upon all the time. They want to up the value of their particular contributions in order to have a relationship duty bargaining chip. Men often do the opposite. We are taught not to complain about the difficulty of a task which leads to an imbalance in perception of the difficulty of each realm of relationship duties.

Yah I'm not seeing this. My wife will literally not let me do laundry because for whatever reason I can't figure out how to do it properly. If it were up to me is but everything a size larger than I need wash it all together and dry it all. She knows what fabrics can be dried and what can't. I've tried but I can't learn it for some absurd reason.
Likewise, she let's me take care of our phone/computer stuff because she knows that's my area of expertise. No one in their right mind thinks that this.
Shortly after I moved away from college and had to pay for laundry by the load, I got rid of all my white clothes. The cost of laundry was thus instantly cut in half.
That's the trick; bleach everything or nothing. Buy cotton everything. Anything that requires cold water, permanent press cycle, cool dry or (horror of horrors) dry clean only, just won't get washed. I should spend $3 to wash a shirt that says "wash separately, gentle cycle"? I don't think so.

[–]MaestroLogical 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Objective criticism is not hatred...
Stop getting so hung up on labels that you can't see the obvious.
Stop altering the definition of words to suit a narrative unless you want everything to become meaningless. Misogyny does not mean 'anything negative about women period.'
I'm sorry; what about this shitty article has anything to do with women's rights? Just saying that something is misogyny doesn't make it true, and a misogynistic attitude doesn't necessarily deny anyone rights.
In our current culture, women can claim oppression over the silliest of things and be taken seriously. Any pushback against that sexism addresses the imbalance. Any post that highlights the inanity and/or hypocrisy of feminists loosens the stranglehold feminists have on popular opinion. This needs to happen before our issues can be considered worthy of concern.
[+]Lordolag 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
We don’t need to prove their argument is dumb and then we can make our case. That’s crazy. It makes everyone here look like we’re anti women (and I hope we’re not). Posts on here shouldn’t be about how their argument is stupid and “look how crazy they are” it should be conversations about awareness of men’s problems in a healthy way. Testicular cancer awareness, male injury in the workplace, transgender men and what they have to go through. That’s the stuff I want to see. Not this polarizing post that only serves the “us vs. them fire” that’s raging through this sub.
