At least 200 women in the UK have been prosecuted for lying about being raped in the past decade, according to a BuzzFeed News analysis of press reports. Most of these women were sent to prison, dozens of them with sentences of two or more years.

That's actually pretty amazing. I like the idea of lying being taboo.

Prosecutors went after teenagers, and women who reportedly had mental health issues, had experienced past physical and sexual assault, or were grappling with drug and alcohol addiction.

If anyone in these classes had stabbed someone to death I doubt they'd be shown leniency. They are still a danger to society and can ruin other's lives.

Women were prosecuted even when they reportedly went to police only under pressure, quickly recanted, or never named their attacker at all.

All problems which can be solved by not lying about a serious crime

The CPS has prosecuted women who police were not sure had lied. In one instance detectives declined to charge the woman for making a false complaint. Prosecutors went ahead anyway.

This may be a little much. I'd like there to be a clear indication the intention was to mislead as not to deter legitimate victims. Under no circumstances should real victims feel fear about coming forward.

Yvette Cooper, Labour MP and chair of the influential home affairs select committee, described BuzzFeed News’ investigation as “very troubling” and called on the CPS to make sure the guidance is followed so that “victims are not deterred from coming forward” and “vulnerable women are not inappropriately prosecuted”.

I'd think it would be fair to need evidence of a crime to convict someone of a crime; wether that be an act of sexual assault or attempting to use the justice system to destroy someone's life. Either way follow the evidence, and if it's substantial enough take action. If there's no evidence, little evidence or contradicting evidence take a light touch.

1)You are equal to men, which means equal responsibility for your actions.

Go read the article. It's about police targeting young or mentally ill women who get dates or times wrong in their rape cases, not "false accusations"

Shitty title, but the article isn't too bad. Basically a woman was in an abusive relationship, her ex was arrested on rape charges without her consent or knowledge after she reported the abuse to police. Since rape charges are very hard to convict, the case didn't go anywhere since she didn't want the arrest for rape to happen to begin with. Not sure how the police got involved if that were the case to begin with, but there aren't too many details about that. Maybe she reported assault or wanted a restraining order at forst and they wanted to get a tougher penalty on him.

It's basically saying that since rape is a crime very unlikely to have more than circumstantial evidence (women are unlikely to report it right after it happens) and only 1 in 14 rapes result in any type of conviction, in the UK 13 of those victims are far more likely to be investigated for lying about the crime. That type of reaction to non-convictions cause women to be even more hesitant to report the crime to begin with.

Doesn't mean they aren't telling the truth. Plenty of male rapists - the majority of rapists - are never punished, prosecuted or even openly accused. If men can deny sexual assault & remain innocent until proven guilty, shouldn't the same apply to women??
