This is exactly what they did with all of college, in general.

More men than women are getting degrees? OMG! We are failing our daughters! How could society allow this to happen! The only way this could possibly be is that the system is biased to help men! The entire system needs to be changed!

Now that women account for 2/3 of all degrees, and the ratio of men:women keeps decreasing every year? Well, girls are just naturally better students. Obviously, there are going to be more women graduating. Nah, it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that the entire system - k through 12, and into college - was specifically changed to promote "more girls" at the expense of boys.

Seriously. Imagine what it would be like if our current situation were reversed? It would be a national crisis, and we’d hear about it non-stop.

As a software engineer my advice would be, if you want to make it focus on studying things on your own. Those skills you acquire by building something and your GitHub profile is more important. Because at the end of it, below all these virtue signalling bullshit, companies need competent people. Focus on being one of them.

Your not alone. My school has a self defense class in it. I'm not gonna lie I never even knew school’s could have self defense classes but back to the point. A friend of mine wanted to join self defense and my teacher kindly told him it was girls only. The reason why is because they talk about getting raped. Literally the SAME THING THAT HAPPENS TO US. Not only that but should I also mention getting robbed, kidnapped, heck even beaten for no reason. There's literally no point in why we can't join the class. I have no interest in joining the class but I feel for the guys that do.

It's funny, they are trying to push women in lucrative STEM careers, but no one is trying to push women in other male dominated careers, such as construction work, truck driving, electric line workers, garbage collectors etc. Nor is anyone trying to push men into female dominated careers, such as teaching, or nursing.

Don’t worry kid, it’s even better in the workforce when you’re working with a team of primarily women, all of whom have gotten used to the privilege the education and hiring systems have afforded them, all the while assuming it’s actually equality. Then when told the work they’re delivering is below quality standards or far behind schedule, they will call you sexist and you will pick up the slack and work harder to cover what they don’t do, all while promotions will favour them as internal diversity initiatives make it nearly impossible for you to advance in your career, regardless of your contributions or performance.

Engineering has become a fun field for young engineers indeed.

My university gave out scholarships to girls in engineering just for being women. It was not a full ride scholarship but it reduced their tuition per semester by $2500 if they paid international fees. Was extremely annoying when I had to pull my GPA up to earn my scholarship whilst they were given it for being women. Plus the women in my program did not fair well yet I guarantee you they will do just fine in the job market. The system’s rigged.

Senior software engineer here. The best thing you can do is to train your skills. Having done some projects on my own was very helpful in the interview for my first job.

For example, I am currently playing screeps ( r/screeps ) and learning kotlin by doing so. If you are interested in something like that:

Fantastic, now your eyes are open. Now, let's get your a$$ to a 6 figure income in a couple of years (or less).

1) Google "free code camp", find one you can take fully remote, sign up, and get started today.

2) Eat clean, workout hard, and work the code camp exercises 4 or 8 hours a day seven day a week.

3) Inside of 4 months the code camp will have referred you to a full-time job. Take the job. Now you are making money.

4) Shift to 8 hour works day, 2 hours study/day, eat clean and workout daily.

5) Find a mentor.

At six months you are making money while your buddies are 1/8 of the way towards a degree.

Stay on the program, constantly learning the next new thing, shifting jobs where needed, and by 2-3 years you will be in the low 6 figures.

Meanwhile, your competition will be in their junior year and about $150k of debt.

Work smart, make money now, stay out of debt.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Unfortunately this seems to be the trend. Universities and large corporations are going to great lengths to ultimately discourage men (and particularly men who don't have additional diversity^tm points) from these sorts of careers.

Fortunately we have other outlets. There are tons of good online resources for learning and improving these skills, many are available free. If you've got the mindset for this sort of work, you for sure won't let some woke college bigotry stand in your way.

Once you're ready to put your skills to task, you'll find that not every company is Google. Your resume (and your github page) is still king when it comes to working at a place you'd actually want to work at. And entrepreneurship is always an option i recommend.

Yeah, it's unfair. No, it's not going to change any time soon. Don't let that stop you.

The sad reality is the most confident people in society are often the dumbest (see Dunning-Kruger effect). They will assertively tell you without blinking that every industry should have a 50:50 split of men and women, and anything short of this is sexism. The thought that scientifically well established biological differences between men and women, such as their hormones and personality traits, may be the reason for differing preferences in college degrees, personal interests, and virtually every facet of life never enters their mind. And if it does, an 'enlighted' politician or journalist in the media will be quick to dispell that 'myth' that the sexes are different, and they won't have the critical thinking ability to question it. These are the people we have to deal with, and unfortunately, many of them have risen to high ranks of power by way of their inflated confidence (particularly in managerial roles, where measuring competency is more difficult and subjective), and are able to make decisions such as creating female only IT camps. It's 100% idiotic and sexist, but should serve as a motivation for you to try just as they did to progress to a position where you can call the shots. Yes you will be discriminated against because of your gender, thanks to these stupid people who think they know better with their 50:50 in all industries naivety, but that's the reality we live in. Thankfully it is still possible to succeed in the face of adversity, it's just going to be a bit more difficult.

The fact that we are living in an Era where there are things such as the EU Women Innovators award and the international women's innovation award, which are obviously, specified for women only, should already ring a bell. Buddy, as a software engineer, you learn most when you learn alone. What you need is projects to work on. I know it;s hard, the hardest part is to motivate yourself to spend your free time on this stuff, but do it. Screw the women only shit. Spend your fee time on this, find mentors online, stack overflow, reddit, coursera, Udemy, Youtube, huge bunch of resources out there. Pursue your dream and don't let the world keep you down.
Remember one thing and only one thing, Life is shit, and then you die. So go out there and follow your dreams, I know this shit is unfair, and we should fight to make it right, but until then, do not lose your dreams or your goals.

So. I've just discussed about this with someone, how unfair this is and was met with the argument that while women are more successful than men in an academical settings, society is biased toward men for carrier advancement. And so they think it's fair to give an advantage to women so that men can not compete (!).

I'm literally at a loss of words right now. This seems so illogical to me. How can we hope achieve equality if we think the solution is to create unfairness for one "side" over the other ?

Does someone has hard proof that indeed, there is a strong bias for men in carrier advancement ? Am I really going to easily get a well paying job just because I'm a man ?? Somehow I strongly doubt that.

It's really strange that the remnants of the Civil Rights Movement and push for women to work back in the 70s and 80s has resulted in stuff like this. Its literally the opposite of what it was (men USED to get all the benefits), which is not EQUAL RIGHTS. Definitely file a complaint or something. I understand why they would do this, maybe like 20-30 years ago, but guess what leaders? Women made it and now men are suffering. Why is this the answer? Boost the women for 3 decades and let the men fall off? Such a weird (and unnecessary) backlash, and I see it all over the place, especially in the behavior of men in their 30s. I'm with you here. Definitely say something. You deserve to be included.

Something similar happened in my school (italy). A major Italian company decided to let 5 high schoolers from my school ti have a one month intership in summer, the places were for IT or chemistry related. I wanted to apply immediately, but then I discovered that they opened it only to girls though since it was to "promote diversity and inclusion".

There were around 15 boys (me included) who applied, we were all rejected. NO girl applied, so nobody took the opportunity.

I remember when in class a few of ny classmates where interested, but when they discovered it was during summer and one of them said "Oh no, in summer I have to subathe". Whenever I think about it, I get angry.

I will never work for this company ubless they pay me double the market.

I know it's aggravatingly stressful bro but hang in there. I know people say this "it will all work out in the end" garbage all the time, but if you stick your head down and work your ass off to learn how to program (or whichever facet of computer science) then eventually you'll 'get good' as the gamers say and you'll get work.

The first job is always the hardest but if you never stop busting your ass to learn then you'll gain the skills and it will show through. See the thing with identity politics and affirmative action type policies is you can't force people to learn things, people can only learn themselves. Therefore, it doesn't matter how many females and 'minorities' you force into a profession, if they don't actually learn that profession, they won't last.

Think of it as a speed bump to your success. A disgustingly discriminatory speed bump, no less, but all it is going to do is slow your entry into success. The line of useless people they can hire over you isn't infinitely long and it is only a matter of time before your REAL skills exceed the incompetence of others + whatever government subsidies the company is being paid.

Also, certain fields like computer science work nothing like how you're told in school, it's almost all networking and word of mouth. It may take years and that sucks, but once you get in, if you have a good attitude and some skills, people will actually pick you up and 'carry' you places.

Venting frustration is good and important and places like this are the correct place to share your frustrations, but also remember to try keep positive and keep charging towards what you want.

All of the promotions at my work are going to women or minorities, preferably women minorities. It’s discouraging because everyone at the top is a white guy who feels bad about how he got there and is now actively preventing others like him from being successful. I am very close to land a 6 figure job (of course I have years if experience), but the new technology I am working on, I learned from a 30 bucks course on Udemy. Add some extra ‘experience’ to your resume and you’ll be fine. Don’t let any of this bs discourage you from pursuing IT.

Udemy, YouTube, coursera have tons of courses you can do in your spare time, make your own portfolio, shine that GitHub account of yours. Python, MEAN stack, WordPress. Pick a path, learn the basics, make small projects and keep working on them.

Anger will only cause you to fail. You see one avenue in front of you and think that is the end, it is not. Life will close many doors on you but its your job to pick up the sledge hammer and break open your own path. Best of luck buddy.
