"Patriarchy" is obscurantism. It's not clearly defined. It's pretty much a conspiracy theory - a vaguely defined network of men cooperating in vaguely defined ways to create vaguely defined effects.

A usual claim is that it's men who hold power. This is wrong. Women vote, and vote for their interests, just like men. Just like in the US now - more men voted for Trump, more women for Biden, the women got their will and laws along with it. If a man promises to do X if elected, and women elect him, it's the women holding power, not him. Power comes through elections where both men and women take part - not only men.

When anyone is asked to fight "patriarchy" by taking specific actions, those actions will always visibly result in clear, direct, tangible, easily identifiable benefits for women, as an immediate consequence in the first degree. Choose more women for positions of power. Give more money to women. Have more networks for women. More freedom for women. The benefits promised for men are always claimed to come into existence in very indirect, vague, unmeasurable, thoughts-and-perceptions "trickle-down" ways. Because in reality, they don't exist so that's all that can be promised.

Here's something that will save you a lot of time:

The Iron Law of Feminism is "Whatever feminists claim, the opposite of that is the truth".

For example...

Feminist claim: "Men write laws and organize society to benefit themselves at the expense of women, i.e. the patriarchy."

What the evidence, including extensive social science research, actually shows: While women do have an in-group bias and thus will favor other women over men (outside of families and close friends), men do not. In fact men have an out-group bias and thus will favor women over other men. That's why you see men behaving "like turkeys voting for Christmas" by setting up affirmative action programs for women, stripping men of their legal rights at the behest of feminists, etc etc.

I hypothesize that this is the origin of feminists' "patriarchy" myth:

Feminists look at men in government and think, "Those men must be passing laws and governing to benefit other men at the expense of women. Because if I was in government, I would definitely pass laws and govern to benefit other women at the expense of men."

But in reality the opposite is true: men in government do not care about the interests of men in general and are instead focused on serving the interests of women.

You see socially enforced gender roles in matriarchal societies as well.

Patriarchal societies that made men in power but in exchange for more responsibility and disposability just happened to work better before industrialization.

Once that system was no longer necessary, the various trappings have been pulled away, but feminists have seized upon the narrative and out of opportunism or myopia made it as if only the trappings of women having less power needed to be stripped. No where is there talk about equal accountability or removing the gender roles of men that benefit women. They have actively undermined efforts to equalize these things while giving lip service to them being problems and dismissing them as due to patriarchy without evidence.

Here's my idea of patriarchy.

Patriarchy is an ideology. The foundation of feminism. Patriarchy comes from the Greek word Patriarkhia, from patriarkhēs. This means "male chief or head of a family." Patriarchy is simply the latinized version.

Patriarchy is an ideology going like this. Men are the privileged, in control, and oppressors in a society. Men are in charge and women are oppressed. The problem with his ideology is that it doesn't reflect society and definitely doesn't reflect most cultures, outside of maybe some in the Middle East. Everything seems to go wrong there.

The reasons that patriarchy theory is flawed are numerous. But here's just a quick rundown in the form of a question. What oppressor class is

Less educated,

Lives shorter,

More likely to be imprisoned,

More likely to commit suicide,

More likely to die in the workplace,

And sent by the society to die in wars.

Does this sound like an oppressed class?

Anyway, patriarchy is a flawed ideology but is continuously used. It's a way of justifying all actions to help women and leave men behind. I agree with helping women. The problem is that I agree with helping everybody. Despite me being in the MRA community, I call myself an egalitarian, and I've realized that the men's advocates I've met tend to be more egalitarian than most people. That's why I'm on this subreddit.

Patriarchy plays no role in men's inequality because it doesn't exist. The only way it does is the people who thinks it exists. If people think a certain demographic is privileged, they'll help the other and leave who they assume is privileged.

This has resulted in inequalities such as FGM being legal in only 31 countries, which IS good. I don't approve of it. However, we still need to address that in my research, excluding Iceland, Nazi Germany, maybe the USSR, and maybe South Africa, no countries have banned MGM.

And yes, people throw around the word patriarchy when they don't want to explain something. Domestic violence towards women? Instead of interviewing men and women, scientifically studying relationships and psychology, and teaching people like children about relationships, (My sex ed taught me about domestic violence) they just cry patriarchy. Women make less than men? Patriarchy. Women aren't CEOs? Patriarchy.

Patriarchy is also used as a way to blame men for men's problems. I talked about men not being able to show their emotions and they blamed the patriarchy. I talked about men committing suicide, and they blamed the patriarchy. Those problems do not exist because of the patriarchy. If the patriarchy existed, those problems wouldn't happen.

Honestly I think patriarchy is not a terrible term if it's used properly.

You can use it to describe the way society historically arranged itself in order to have key areas (in politics, science, arts...) mainly covered by men. It's an arrangement with very deep, pre-historical roots, which helped us survive for most of our early history. But today we don't find it useful anymore and we want to get rid of it. And I happen to agree with this assesment.

On the other hand, many people talk about patriarchy as an oppression system created by men against women. This is a simplificatory mis-representation, and it has some strong conspiracy theory vibes.

Patriarchy in a literal sense to me is a society where rules are created and dictated entirely or almost entirely by men. This does not allow for people behind the scenes, Shadow rulers, family, influential associates etc. Because the moment influence can be exerted, it is ruled by whoever has influence.

In the sense of "The Patriarchy". I think it's just a shift of blame from classism to sexism. It wasn't until the Great War that the vote was given to more than an elite few in the UK. And it wasn't really until easy to obtain contraception was available that labor work was given to women. Which means that in both of these, someone in a lower class liberated there lower classes and enabled them to have more choice. The class war no longer works; I think, in part because of points like these. But what isn't seen is that both sides are striving for the same thing but a vocal minority is the only group being heard.

Think of it like a game you play, and the developers change it to something you think ruins it. And everyone starts leaving. Before they changed the game, the only people they heard were the vocal minority, the silent majority just moves on to the next thing. The developers still don't know what they did wrong. But the vocal minority keep shouting about stuff that doesn't matter because it 'should' be there. You go back 200 years, everyone still liked sex, and medicine wasn't that good, so women couldn't work that much. Now we have the ability for women to have any job, but the vocal minority just wants to be the leader. They don't have anything in class to actually attack, so they attack everyone on their own level to to get elevated.

Please note, I did simplify a bunch of stuff. So please don't just attack what I said there random internet people. Trying to make functioning analogies doesn't seem to be my forte.

I would say your instincts are right. It's a manipulation of language. "The Patriarchy," is not "men," it is the ruling class, which really has nothing to do with maleness in this day and age.

Not to sound too bitter, but generally speaking if you listen to "Capital F" Feminists, women are victims of the system who can't be blamed for their shortcomings, while men "run the system" and can be blamed.

Women have Hypoagency, Men have Hyperagency.

Frankly I don't believe that most people who run in those circles deliberately think this way. The intense social pressure to be as woke as possible mixed with a narrow, self-centered understanding of the world is a truly potent combination, and those opinions are so heavily reinforced on social media and in academic discussion that they feel 100% confident in their righteousness.

That's the sort of attitude that has led to men by and large choosing not to speak about this shit, because they worry if they do then this groupthink will take hold, and complete strangers will dismantle their lives for the crime of speaking their minds.

Let's try a thought experiment. Say we replace the patriarchy with "the government". Then we ask aren't most of those problems caused by the government? In many cases the government is in fact the cause of mens problems. They pass laws which privilege women over men, for example. So does that imply that the solution is to eliminate government?

If not then, even in the so called patriarchy caused some of the problems, it wouldn't necessarily imply that getting rid of the patriarchy would necessarily solve the problems. Like we have seen with the draft issue, empowering women doesn't necessarily make them want to give up their privileges.

When your teacher says, 'Aren't many of those problems caused by the patriarchy?', you need to ask why? Is it so that the problems can be dismissed? That they're already being taken care of?

Most people agree that a social system existed which assigned roles to males and females according to their gender, and that we still live with the legacy of that system in many ways.

The problem with "patriarchy" as an identifier is that it places the emphasis on who occupied certain positions of government, military, etc. authority within that system - a small number of men at the top.

This was useful for women's liberation movements because it gave a neat target - male power - to energise those movements, and because they were often concerned with increasing women's share in those positions of power.

It is much less useful for men's movements where many of the issues have to do with a wellbeing gap caused by the gender roles themselves.

So patriarchy describes a society built by men to privilege men at women's expense, but also this exact system designed to privilege men is also built in a way that disadvantages men? So not only are men evil enough to create such a self serving system, they are also too incompetent to do it correctly.

Here's what I think these sorts of people don't understand. Women have an in-group bias, but men do not. In fact, men have an out-group bias. There is research confirming this. I think a lot of women's notions that men want to make the world to benefit men are projecting. Women have an in-group bias and, given the opportunity, would prefer to give advantages to women, and they assume men do the same. It's why people think it matters that most of our politicians are male, but never seem to notice that many politicians are feminists but none are MRAs. I know I'd rather have Karen Straughan in office than Joe Biden. And I'm not judging women for having that in-group bias, I'm sure it's a big reason why our species has been so successful.

What do they mean by the patriarchy? Do they mean a system built by men, and therefore if the system harms men it's men's fault? Because I could see how that would be reasonable, but I'd still disagree with some of the assumptions. Or by patriarchy do they actually mean a system built by men explicitly intended to benefit men? I'm not even sure I could seriously entertain this notion.

"Men's issues are caused by the patriarchy" is one of those annoying arguments and isn't easy to respond to specifically because it's so ludicrous. It seems like one of those things that I can't explain to these people because it's already broken down into it' simplest components.

“Patriarchy” is used so frivolously nowadays it’s a joke. It’s made to seem as though men run everything and exclude women, when in reality there are no boundaries stopping women from achieving any goals in the west. Nobody asks the question as to why you wouldn’t have to compete with others for high status positions, they just say “men are in the way”….OFCOURSE THEY ARE. Not to mention the fact that most people who are disaffected are men, most people in jail are men, most people who die in war are men, most suicides are men, I can go on. We can't discuss male suicide being 400% higher for men, and the why's and the how's behind it because the conversation is forcibly redirected to discuss "Toxic Masculinity" instead.

In reality most men are less able to control the outcome than most women. Patriarchy takes the upper elite class and assumes every man has the same power to control the outcome as they do. Which is obviously bullshit of the highest order.

Patriarchy has been used to prevent men from changing the outcomes too, because only women are allowed to control the social order now.

What does patriarchy mean to you?

Multiple things. First, it's a (somewhat flawed) way to describe the societal order of by gone eras. Secondly, it's a slur used as a scapegoat by feminists (akin to "the devil" in christianity) to blame & exclude men.

Yes. In both of the above meanings. The historical patriarchy instilled certain advantages and disadvantages on men and women. Interestingly feminism has worked tirelessly to give women the advantages that men have, while trying to aleviate them from the disadvantages. So far so good. A lot of issues attributed to "the patriarchy" can be attributed to "capitalism", "the oligarchs" and other figures in authority better than "50% of the world". Lack of access to healthcare, police system that focuses on filling for-profit prisons, unaffordable education paired with ever-mounting student debt crisis, etc.

Solve all of those issues and there isn't much left to "patriarchy". UBI, affordable housing, education and good social safety nets means there is nothing stopping people from going into their preferred careers. Crime rates go down because you don't need to steal to survive. If drug addiction is treated as something to be cured you don't have the stigma of getting treatments and you don't have to resort to crimes for your next hit.

There is no such thing as Patriarchy. It is a feminist narcissistic DARVO tactic to blame men for everything, never blaming women.

If there were any male supremacy or oppression of women in society, most of the suffering wouldn't be on men.

Society is highly gynocentric, and that's because women want it to be so. And women have great power in society. Women are the majority voters in any democratic election. Women are the major spenders in any economy. Women are the ones raising the next generation in their formative years, both at home and in schools or preschool daycare centers. And women have an in-group preference, meaning they will take side with other women and make choices that benefit women at the expense of men.

If anyone asks you "Aren't those caused by patriarchy", ask them to define patriarchy. Most of them won't have a clear definition. Most of them won't have an objective metric or statistic that shows us which societies have a Patriarchy which societies don't. Most of them don't have a clear goalpost that feminism has succeeded and finally beat Patriarchy, no more feminism is ever needed, they can not define it in any objective measurable manner.

Talk of patriarchy and feminism boils down to women wanting more and more from men never thinking of long term consequences.

Patriarchy, from my understanding, was once a good term that had some real implications, but the definition - the line between what it was and what it is has been erased and redrawn enough times that I barely consider it a word anymore

People like to make a competition out of others' misery. Who cares if the problem that men faced is caused by patriarchy or feminism. The problem exists and we should be there to help each other.

Personally I think that the reason men have so many problems in this world, is because of the mentality people have inherited from media. Look at older Disney movies and movies that are aimed at young teenage girls, they both have the common factor that 9/10 times it’s about a woman who gets saved by a man who is willing to give his life for her. And kids grow up to think that’s what love is
