F*ck off. No it's not. It's because nobody cares or is willing to listen. Or it's held against you when you do open up.
Same with "men should cry more" - what, is that your only f*cking solution? Cry more? As if that's going to make all your issues disappear magically. Again, f*ck off.
As well as "go to therapy". Oh yeah... because I can afford that can I? Fuck off. Do you have any idea how expensive therapy is? Even in the UK, with the NHS, there's a massive waiting list and the dialectical behaviour therapy channels are women-only.
How about, if you really do care, you start advocating for more services that can help men, because I know for a fact that there are plenty that are specialise for women but not for men. Or maybe even shine a light on some of the issues men face in society instead of just dismissing them as men's problems for men to solve.
Edit ( I put this in the comments but I think I should clarify it here ): "To an extent I agree [that toxic masculinity is also responsible], but I know many people who sought help didn't get any, which is why I think even if these men who were afraid talking will harm their masculinity spoke up, they wouldn't get much help anyway. I think the toxic masculinity line is just used to pin the problem on men at this point. "
Final edit: Apparently my tone in this was very angry and I need to 'get friends' and 'stop being a manbaby'. Well I'm sorry if it came across that way but I am indeed angry, and I hope you can understand why without me having to delve into my own shit.
I'm just going to delete the reddit account, I've said what I wanted but some of the comments are just nasty, especially the direct messages. And to those going on about toxic masculinity, right or not, regardless, this isn't just a men's problem, and I'm sick of it being treated as such, especially when some people just shrug it off and are quick to blame the male suicide rate on toxic masculinity, which women perpetuate just as much as men with the 'man up' comments. I'll be aight. Have a nice day.

He's right. Unfortunately nobody cares and you're left to rot or what not since you're disposable as a man. You're not afforded the same luxury, entitlement, privilege, help, nor rights women posses and instead you'll be blamed for everything simply because you're supposed to be a "man"
They'll even gaslight you calling you entitled when the world and men have handed them more advantages. Speak out against this and you'll get mocked or worse. Stay silent and you just suffer in silence or suicide.

He's not right, but that's the impression many MANY boys and men get from society. The problem is reprogramming your mind to be able to see the opportunities for support that do exist. They're few and far between in institutions, but I'd bet there's many guys and online communities of guys that would be happy to help/listen/be a sound board/give advice/etc.

It's the closest medical center to me and since I don't drive it's difficult to change dr's since if I need a Dr in summer it would mean walking long distances in the sun which causes severe migraines....so no matter weather I stay with my current Dr or get a new one I'm screwed either way but hey only ten more years and I can check the fuck out if this shitty worthless hellhole of a planet

Man, I really don't know what to say other than that as long as you are alive there is a chance it will get better. I'm going through a really rough patch myself, but I'm sticking it out because if I can get back to a place where life is great, life can get good enough that the pain now will be worth it.
If you are friends or even just on friendly terms with somebody, they will notice you are gone.
Is there a service like BetterHelp in the UK? That type of thing is usually cheaper than in person counseling and will be available immediately.

The number of submissions crossposted here from that sub makes me feel simultaneously hopeful and kinda concerned like are the zoomers ok? Obviously the continued deterioration of relations between the sexes from generation to generation was inevitable and probably a necessary evil to wake young men up but it seems like there’s a lot of hostility. I'm right on the threshold of gen-z and millenial and I will say it's definitely become worse and worse, spend a couple minutes on /r/dating and just see how many 20 something men are desperately looking for a relationship and run into nothing but toxicity. If I'm getting my numbers right I'm old enough to technically be a millenial but because of failing 2 grades it put me in classes with gen-z so I definitely saw a lot of this animosity starting to grow and it's been a couple years since I've been around a lot of people that age and it seems like it's just getting worse.

TL;DR at bottom
I feel this. It's total bullshit for there to be services for women that aren't available for men (or a mirrored counterpart if sex is a key component of the helping avenue). But we shouldn't be so quick to blame women and feminism. Sure, many of these failings can be attributed to an overcorrection in an already-broken system. And yes, the overcorrection presented itself as "society needs to do more for women." But to think that the failings of society to accommodate men are a 1:1 direct result of resources being put in place to help women is totally off-base.
It's not uncommon for me to see things like "feminism was totally pointless after women got the right to vote and equal pay." But men had all those rights first, in fact for equal pay we were the measuring stick. So I ask this: do you think that everything was just fine for men back then? Probably not. The men of the previous generations had little other support than to drink, while the women of the same generation were lucky to have a friend to confide in. (Totally generalising here, point being there were little to no structured support systems in place for anybody, regardless of sex, for far too long). I believe that BOTH sexes needed much, MUCH more in place to help them. So instead of trying to tear down the supports of women to try to level the playing ground, we should be advocating for our own services.
Men obviously get the short straw when it comes to mental health / supports, but blaming an ideology that (when not being hijacked by someone on social media who knows absolutely nothing) is all about advocating for women's rights really gets noone any more help. The more generalised a service, the harder it is to tailor it to truly provide help for the many walks of life who can seek help from it. In that light I totally support some services being female-only, male-only, or really any other demographic. I say "some" because entry-level stuff like temporary counselling that seeks to provide an accurate referral for you to seek longer-term care doesn't have much to gain from being divided up, but places like shelters can benefit from this strategy as well as some clinics, centres, and therapy avenues. Something I have seen that I will seek to make more prevalent in my career is that one local women's centre recently took steps to gather resources for men, and gave their employees enough briefing about it that they should be able to help refer any man who is in need of help down a correct path. This isn't a perfect substitute for a counsellor's referral, but every little bit goes a long way. At least one service I would like to see universally adopt this is shelters, be they for everybody or gendered. I totally stand by gendered shelters that they can't just take a (for example) female into a male shelter, for many reasons that include but aren't limited to: being unable to provide proper care to the person seeking help, putting the population of the shelter at risk (mental health / trauma, not someone coming in to beat them up), and that they would have to rework a large portion of their system in order to truly accommodate these changes in an equal way.
Finally I would like to say this: we need to promote the means to access any and all services like this just as much as we need to promote creating new services to address the many spots we miss. In sports they say "availability is the best ability". The same rings true here. A service is only as good as its capacity to help people, and if no one knows how to access the service or even that it exists then that is a huge barrier. I'll also note that this is something I typically see women's services do better. This could be for many factors, such as: the services that have been around longer and hold higher merit just so happen to be women's services, women who have used those services may be more willing to talk about their experiences with the service, society may push these services more as they feel more of a moral high ground from promoting women's services, or my sample size is too small and I'm simply wrong. I'm obviously generalising quite heavily on a large group of people in some of those examples, however I'm just listing some non-insignificant reasons. Obviously not all women are more likely to talk about their experiences while all men stay silent, and obviously not everybody in a given society thinks that promoting a male shelter VS a female shelter is any different in terms of a moral high ground.
I went on a rant and missed the point in that second-to-last section, but I'll leave it as it's tangentially related. I should also note that I haven't been involved with the field long enough to be an authority on any matter, but these are concepts I've discussed with people much more involved than myself and they shared the same sentiments. Now, again, I can't realistically talk with enough people to say these are common opinions across an entire field.
TL;DR - Men are disadvantaged when it comes to mental health care, but don't blame feminism and DEFINITELY don't blame it on men themselves. It can be easier to help a population with a more specialised plan of care, however a service you're providing for one population (in this case, sex) should have a counterpart that services the populations left out of their care (in this case, the other sex).

Really depends which definition of incel you use. It's closer to the one that's in wider usage (angry misogynistic men) as opposed to men who aren't able to start relationships
And if there was any truth to that list, they'd be the media version of incel (wanting someone of a much higher status). Going through posts on there they have this screwed idea of men based on bad relationships or haven't had much luck due to their view of men.
Recently being on the dating scene they remind me of single women in their 30s and the 40s but much more angrier. It's possible they're in the percentage who won't or can't find anyone mostly down to their perceptions of men and anger towards them
[–]Magos00110001 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
There are multiple meanings behind the word incel. From my understanding it originally was a term that was created by incels to describe themselves. Involuntary celibate, simple enough. However, in common parlance on the internet it generally refers not only to the basic original definition, but to actions, thoughts, and attitudes that people ascribe to incels. The latter is the context for which I call FDS incels.

One time me and a random dude were having a heart to heart at a party.(both a little drunk) We both had rough childhood that were pretty close to the same, for once I felt connected to someone on the matter. At the peak of the conversation this girl walks over and ask us if we're gay. Woman want emotional man but not to emotional, or only emotional to their needs so who's really the toxic ones?

What a stupid cliche. Ya know, being homophobic isn’t especially fashionable these days either. So she’s okay coming across as a hater if she gets to take a man down a peg? For connecting at a party? That’s toxic AF; I’d bet money she just felt insecure bc no one was talking to her.
Ppl blab on about toxic masculinity but I don’t hear much discussion about the why and how men are socially punished for emotional display and rewarded for stoicism. Ladies, you play your part. If you didn’t, men simply wouldn’t feel the need to develop that set of behaviors.
Not blaming women, just trying to balance the picture here. It’s just like you said, the-cake-and-eat-it too mentality is out of hand.

Toxic masculiinity is hate speech. The really sad thing about this r/teenager OP was that he demonstrates the infiltration of teenage boy consciousness and identity with a hate speech concept like toxic masculinity. This is what society, media and educators teaching feminist misandry has done to the young modern male psyche.
[–]chocoboat 2 points3 points4 points (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't know about "hate speech" but it's certainly a stupid term.
No one says it's "toxic femininity" when a man tells a woman she's less capable than men. So when a woman tells a man his issues don't matter and he needs to man up, why is that "toxic masculinity"?
It's just called sexism, in both cases.
[+]ExMuzzy3 points [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
This is exactly why I hate the phrase “toxic masculinity”.
It seems like an attempt to avoid saying there is sexism against men or misandry. You know why feminists are so adamant about pushing their language.
[–]rabel111 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Toxic masculinity is exactly that. Feminist ideologues blaming men for all and any men's problems, because in the feminist ideology masculinity is toxic. That's why I will always call out that term as hate speech. It is devisive, victim blaming, sextist, hate speech that is used not to help men, but to abuse and demean men. It alienates and offends so many men, and this is so well known, that continuing to use the term can only be an attempt to further abuse and offend.
[–]ticktocking 24 points25 points26 points (9 children) | Copy Link
Look at that shitshow of a comment section. Maybe they should make a better term to use. Using feminist studies jargon to explain societal standards in real life is fucking dumb. Didn't you guys learn to write to your audience in like 5th grade?
Just say social standards. Or gender roles. How many of these conversations need to break down over the use of this stupid useless terminology before people get the hint and change the language?
"Hmm people really don't like this term that requires hours of reading to actually understand. They say it's offensive and implies that masculinity is toxic. Weird, they must be stupid, and ignorant. Let's keep the term."
[–]SirBlankFace 7 points8 points9 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Fucking seriously, man. "Toxic masculinity doesn't refer to the behavior of men, but how society as a whole treat men." THEN IF SOCIETY IS THE PROBLEM WHY EMPHASIZE MASCILINITY AND NOT SOCIETY!
Oh my fucking god, i didn't even bother arguing with these people because they don't even know what they're talking about. I know damn well that's not the use of the term, but they would never concede that point. It's like they're trying to redefine the term and ignore all the harm it actively causes. It felt like the whole comment section was gaslighting me.
[+]zaner500 -7 points-6 points-5 points (7 children) | Copy Link
What a lot of people are saying is while the term itself is stupid what it means is important.
[–]ticktocking 17 points18 points19 points (4 children) | Copy Link
Some are yeah, and that's basically what I'm getting at. There is no need for that term. It sounds inflammatory, degrading, and shaming. Some use it almost as a slur (not those who know the definition of course). The biggest part for me is that there is no reason to not use more easily understood terminology like "gender roles", "harmful stereotypes", or "societal expectations". It leads to these dumb derailing arguements over a definition instead of any kind of productive conversation. It's a failure of language.
I thought we were trying to get away from gendering terms. They are dehumanizing, and easily misused. It's frustrating to see people defend its use when it doesnt provide anything my other examples provide.
[–]Edward_III 13 points14 points15 points (1 child) | Copy Link
It is not about gendering either, the expression itself is utterly moronic if the usage is meant to be what the comments claim, even if the discussion wasn't focused on sex. "Oh, it actually means the discrimating pressure against men in society!" was something I saw in several comments. Now, by that same token, racism against blacks would be called "toxic blackness". I think thats enough to see how it is an utterly moronic expression to explain racism, in the same way it is to use against male discrimination.
To be honest, I cannot see how someone in good faith came up with the term to mean what the comments claim it means. If that is the case, it is a bad name and should be dropped.
If it isn't, and it is meant as a more general jab at masculinity or attack on at least a portion of males to blame them for some set of societal issues (which is a use I have seen with some frequency), though then the term makes more sense, I think everyone in here would still not agree with such idea.
Edit: To further the point I made in the last paragraph, it seems one the classical usages of the Motte-and-bailey tactic. They make an aggressive take, that is a direct attack on males (specifically masculinity), that beign the bailey; but, when someone points out the injustice of such an attack, they retreat to the motte (oh it is just meant to refer to the negative stereotypes that men face!!), in order to keep using and popularising the term, and thus the negative association which is the main goal. The insidiousness of the tactic is that people can honestly believe in the motte, and end up serving in disseminating the bailey.
[–]SirBlankFace 3 points4 points5 points (0 children) | Copy Link
No, it never meant what those comments were saying. It's supposed to shine a light on negative male stereotypes and that, i can get behind, but they willfully forget all the times it's been used to shut men down and out of conversations as well as put blame on men themselves.
The term itself has become toxically divisive and sexist, but not only that, they're trying to stupidly define it where toxic masculinity becomes a misnomer, gaslighting every opponent to the term in the process.
[–]Chaos_Therum 7 points8 points9 points (0 children) | Copy Link
I would say the people who know the definition are definitely using it as a slur, it's a term built specifically to attack core parts of male identity.
[–]Greg_W_Allan 2 points3 points4 points (0 children) | Copy Link
It's designed that way. By attaching a controversial label one creates a distraction from the real meat of an issue.
[+]ExMuzzy1 points [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I mean, the boys are basically already being called rapists and scum, near literally. Feminism wants to "teach boys" so much but don't realize all they are doing is pointing the finger at innocent teens and boys. These kids are noticing. Feminism is literally creating enemies, and it's hard to not think they are doing it intentionally considering how freaking obvious it is when you apply a spec of common sense.
[–]Alistair_TheAlvarian 9 points10 points11 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Feminism has slowly devolved into anger and hatred biting and attacking anyone who has a dick no matter what they think or do, they'll attack a male feminist as easily as they will a literal nazi.
And when there is a palpable sense of fear and or stiffness in every aspect of society especially schools people start to notice and it makes them unhappy. When they bring it up it just draws in more hate porn addicts to attack them for supporting the patriarchy or dismissing women or some such other bullshit. And that cements them as not feminists, and then when girls see their male friends and family getting hurt by Feminism and turning away from it and they see themselves going down the same path of blind rage they turn away as well. It's slowly fraying year by year until eventually it either chills the fuck out as a movement or dies like it should, and we all know how much feminist groups like calming down and de extremifying

It's actually a common misconception. I remember seeing some posts a week or so ago addressing this misconception. Men do seek out help, but when they do, it's often that they're not taken seriously. This is probably one reason why some men feel like they can't reach out when they don't, but to say that men as a whole don't reach out is factually wrong.

I've usually seen it defined as unhealthy expectations for male behaviour. When I have seen unhealthy expectations for male behaviour it has usually come from women: Mothers telling their sons that "boys don't cry", women talking about how men that they don't consider to be masculine enough for their standards are creepy. Feminists seem to be using the expression as a slur and a way to blame male victims.

[–]Pepethejeep 12 points13 points14 points (3 children) | Copy Link
If by toxic masculinity, you mean being ignored by everyone and basically being worked into insanity/ to death, then yeah it’s toxic masculinity.
[–]Rallings 1 point2 points3 points (2 children) | Copy Link
Yes that is what they mean.
[–]Chaos_Therum 2 points3 points4 points (1 child) | Copy Link
I really don't think that's what they mean, generally when I hear that term used it means. "Men acting in any way that a woman finds distasteful, or unintuitive."
[–]Rallings 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
The post was very critical of the term and what it means. It's a sensational headline, but the point isn't bad
[–]LgbtRpedos9 20 points21 points22 points (2 children) | Copy Link
Wrong, women bitched about male only outlets to the government. And the simp government forced businesses to open to women. The prohibition in America wasnt a fluke.

Actually read the post. The guy in there is right, he's refuting the notion laid out in the title.

Men do seek help, they just don't get it.

Only thing I didn't agree with the post is how this person still believes toxic masculinity exists...
[–]MetroidJunkie 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Instead of actually help, they blame the patriarchy and toxic masculinity, which is a thinly veiled way of saying it's men's fault that men are feeling depressed.

I tried to talk to my ex ( while we were still together) about my mental health issues. She called me sick and an attention seeker. I had my first sleep paralysis episode later that night but didn't tell her.

Most men want to commit suicide because they live in a world that treats them like second class citizen that only exist to be exploited for money and labor. They want to commit suicide because they live in consistent pain or struggle with social/romantic dynamics in which women are heavily favored. They want to commit suicide because no one gives a shit about the problems that men face and do not want to do anything about it even when presented with overwhelming evidence. They want to commit suicide because no amount of "talking about it" will fix those problems and the very implication that simply discussing those problems, despite the fact that it is clear that no one gives a fuck or will actively think less of men who speak out, will somehow fix all of men's problems is incredibly condescending and diminutive to those men. There's a lot of shit hurting men right now but it's mainly systematic misandry, gender roles and this persistent male vilification coming from feminism.
The very notion that "talking about it" will somehow fix someone's problem reeks of female privilege, because women can not only speak about their issues with little to no reproach but actually have people(men especially) around them shower them with genuine sympathy, empathy, support and solutions to their problems. The world does not work like that for men. Men don't need to fix their problem by talking about it, nor should they be pressured to do so by women who have no understanding or regard for basic social dynamics.

It's not because we're afraid to talk. It's because nobody listens. But whatever. Maybe when enough of us kill ourselves, the toxic masculinity levels will start to decrease. So keep it bottled up, lads, and let's all do our part!

I share your sentiment.
Stay strong OP!
Give it time, people will learn.
[–]TFME1 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Ummm...I think it's more about the intolerant response, based on the (minority) existence of toxic masculinity, which is, in all actuality toxic femininity/toxic misandrism.
[–]Past-Difficulty6785 -1 points0 points1 point (2 children) | Copy Link
There's no such thing as fucking "toxic masculinity".
There isn't. It's women and weak men who don't know the first thing about masculinity who want to dictate to men how they should change while completely dismissing any possibility that they themselves would benefit immensely from introspection.
Think about the fact that there's nothing people describe as "toxic masculinity" that women don't also do. Furthermore, why have we completely ignored the very hint that if we accept that there is such a thing as toxic masculinity, shouldn't we also accept that there's such a thing as toxic femininity?
It's a racket. It's the same old "men bad/women good" crap that they've been suffocating men and boys with for decades now. And yet, we still don't accept it. Why not? Is it because of the culture? No because you can go to any culture and see the same basic trends being played out along gender lines.
Feminists have built a house of cards on the fraudulent and false premise that there's a patriarchy that exists to serve men. When, in your life, has it ever been true that men and boys get treated better than women? Just a single example that is always true and is due to something systemic or even cultural? It's exactly the opposite and the balance shifts more to privilege the female of the species all the time.
Not that it matters, really. You're talking to teenagers. Teenagers are known for two things whether they want to admit it or not: They don't tend to use logic when making decisions and they're easily swayed by peer acceptance influences.
By agreeing that "toxic masculinity" even exists you are playing into their claim. It's like arguing whether Santa Claus delivers no presents or really bad presents to naughty children...why isn't anybody asking why we would even believe that he exists in the first place?
They've skipped over establishing conclusively that such a thing is extant and simply made it something along the lines of what Goebbels [Edit: Attributed to Goebbels but not actually his quote. Unfortunately I can't find any other source] said about lies:
[–]KalegNar 0 points1 point2 points (1 child) | Copy Link
As a an ironic side note about that iconic Goebbels quote about how if you repeat a lie often enough people will believe it: Goebbels didn't actually say that.
[–]Past-Difficulty6785 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Hmmm...yes, you're absolutely right. That being said, it hasn't been conclusively attributed to him and it's said that it's an unlikely thing for him to say. That's to say that while it is unlikely that he said it, it hasn't been attributed to anybody else.

I have a few self-help therapy books.
I don't know what else to do, but I don't really think paying someone to trust them with my mental health is a good idea in lieu of many of the points made in this post and this thread.

I suffer from depression and OCD that I now take medicine for. I have been called “retarded” for it (ironically by people far less intelligent than I), I’ve been told I’m ridiculous, and that I need to “grow up.”
Maybe masculinity plays a role but the bigger problem is the way society stigmatizes those with disorders.

Even in the comments, they seem to be calling "man up" and all that "toxic masculinity." Alas, they are sheep after all.
They even acknowledge in the comments that it's the expectations that are toxic but proceed to call masculinity "toxic." I'd like to see them start calling gender roles for women "toxic femininity." They lack functioning brains, most of them.
Also, the expectations aren't that toxic, gender roles are good, men should be disciplined with their emotions. The problem is probably not enough masculinity rather than masculinity being toxic. In my opinion, the SOLE way we can get people to stop saying toxic masculinity is using the opposite term when somebody complains about gender roles for women.
"Women are expected t-" "toxic femininity"

Wasn't there a study very recently out of the UK where they stated that it wasn't that men don't talk about their issues, but that there are systemic barriers in place that prevent men from getting the help that they need? Isn't it ironic that by removing barriers for one, they raised barriers for another when there shouldn't be barriers in the first place.
[–]obligatoryclevername 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
It must be nice to be able to blame someone else for all of your problem and all of their own problems. Women are incapable of compassion toward men.

Just like you assumed it was toxic masculinity even the man might have assumed that you wouldn't have supported him and probably laugh it off. Just telling the people" we were always there for you , you should have approached us" isn't gonna bring them back from dead. Rather you should have approached him when his behaviour was suspicious if you cared about him. If you didn't then shut the fu*k up!

I once saw a TikTok video that pointed out this issue. I was going to post it here, but I can’t seem to find it anymore. It was probably deleted… 😓

Fully agreed.
I'm quite a short guy at 5'1 (Mauritian islander genes lol), so getting a girlfriend is harder for me than most.
Never been prone to depression per se, but it did give me anxiety/breathing issues.
Was referred to a (female) counsellor who was absolutely HORRIBLE. She kept on saying that she was totally impartial, etc. but kept trying to lead me down a path with her conversations, i.e. asking what kind of women I'm attracted to then saying "why do I feel 'entitled' to those women"...I was like jeez lady, I never even said I thought I was entitled lol. It was crystal clear she had both judged me and had her own agenda.
Long story short I just focus on making money and getting with some cool escort girls I know who are smoking hot and actually pretty chill 👍
In the end the best therapy for me was not playing society's games at all and playing by my own rules...and I would reccomended that attitude to many on this forum.
PEACE.

The big myth! A huge percentage of men who have died from suicide were actually seeking help for their issues. The "help" available to us is clearly not enough. After a lifetime of being abused by women with no repercussions, and with my 40s looming, friendless, genuinely friendless, career going nowhere, I will be joining their ranks in the next few years. I don't see things improving. Until then I just spend every penny I get on getting as high as possible.
