That's literally not even what you just quoted the other guy as saying. He's saying women are entitled to men doing their shit for them. In a workplace when they have to sink or swim, the spoiledness catches up to them.

Now, I don't believe that women don't go into STEM in the first place for this reason (they don't go into STEM because they just don't like the work), but the women who complain about mythical hostility in the field do so for this reason.

I don't really care about the theory you're hating on, but this just sounds insane to me. Commenting on looks is standard friendly behavior between men, between women, from a woman to a man, and from a man to a woman. And if you both start friendly and feel it out to be more, that's fine too. If someone misreads you and attempts something innocuous like asking you out you don't like, just tell him your boundary in a normal, self-confident way and continue on... Jesus.

All I know is women seem to find a reason to complain about everything.

They complain if men compliment them. They complain if men don't compliment them.

A couple years back a woman overheard two men during a conference make a joke about "dongles". She publicly shamed them and then said they are the reason women aren't in STEM fields.

In fact, if women aren't in STEM fields it's because they don't want to be. Women in soft countries like the US have fewer women in STEM because women know it's easier to marry a man in a STEM field than it is to actually do the work herself.

In less developed countries where women must work they chose fields where they make money. STEM is one of those areas that pays.

It doesn't matter what the field. Never underestimate the ability of a woman/women to portray herself as a victim.

I don't think the main "appeal" of an orbiter specifically has to do with compliments. It's more general: attention and special treatment. And I do think if a woman goes from an environment where she receives this to an environment where she doesn't then it's entirely possible that she'll perceive it as hostility.

However: I'm not sure why RPers would think that orbiters would not be available in a STEM environment. And even ignoring that, it's only one reason for the accusations of workplace hostility. There are probably STEM environments out there that are actually hostile to women. Many RPers have the tendency to take the situation that's least charitable to the woman (which is the case some of the time) and assume that it's what's always going on.

There's a lot of "the grass is always greener" type posts, both men and women think the other sex has it easier in various parts of life.

Honestly, my opinion is as a whole, women are typically more social and emotionally engaged and motivated, with men being more mechanical and logical. This would lead to more men being in STEM. This also explains why women typically lean towards more social and empathetic roles in society where you're not seeing many men in, like teaching and RNs.

Women want to be coddled. Men want the truth so we tell men truth but women are emotionally fragile and so we lie to them because we don't want them to make them upset and cry.

With women at work, sometimes I know they're less intelligent and incompetent but I don't say anything because I think to myself women need to work since they have no one to provide for them. Sometimes things need to be done and men don't have their patience for coddling women, but when they say something to her it feels cold to her and she wrongly thinks men are being hostile to her when they just need her to be better at her job.

What women don't realize is that is how men talk to each other every day and that men don't go to the same lengths to protect each other's feelings as they would with a woman. She just thinks he's being mean and rude but he's really treating her like an adult.

No, that pretty much sums it up. There is a level of courtesy afforded to women in the general populous that they don't receive in male-dominated STEM fields. In STEM, they're treated just like men, and they consider this hostile.

Read my above statements. It's not about compliments...it's about the lack of treating women with "kid gloves." When you fuck up in STEM, your manager tells you in no uncertain terms and with impeccable math exactly how you fucked up, why you fucked up, and the ramifications of your fuckup. This is how men are treated everywhere, but it's not how women are treated anywhere. They're so unused to being treated this way they consider it hostile.

I don't know what post you are talking about because I don't read TRP but a STEM workplace is not hostile workplace. A war zone is hostile workplace, a ship in the middle of a storm out in the ocean is a hostile workplace, a burning building is a hostile workplace. Asshole co-workers is just kind of a commonplace thing.

industries that are dominated by men tend to be condescending as fuck towards women, and women tend to be held to ridiculous standards. often this alone is enough to scare away even the most qualified women.

just my observations, as someone with many friends in STEM fields. i've been part of the music industry for 5-6 years, and holy fuck, i dont think i could be a woman in music, especially a woman studio engineer. i've never seen a more condescending work environment for women.

First, complements don't always have to be about looks. Being surrounded by people who are trying to win your favor usually results in all kinds of compliments (could be your looks, or your work, or your knowledge base, etc), and general favors and preferential treatment.

I imagine the argument isn't so much that women are saying "oh no, these guys aren't telling me I'm hot," so much as "Nobody is treating me the way I'm used to being treated, they are being hostile," when, in reality, the way they're used to being treated is preferentially, so being treated the same as a guy (generally ignored, used, reprimanded more than praised) seems hostile to them.

Actually, most of the women I know who have complained about working in a male dominated field were upset about inappropriate compliments. Zero compliments probably would have been preferable to them. But this is just what I've experienced, I have nothing to back this up.
