High school girls admitted to targeting and falsely accusing a boy of sexual assault because they 'just don't like him'. Boy was fired from his job, forced to serve time in a juvenile detention facility, is now home-schooled and suffers psychological trauma. School officials just didn’t care.

I think it's great to use humor to focus into men's problems. If not for this sketch, nobody would talk about men loneliness. The article is trash, though. It ends blaming men for women issues, as usual.

[–]Morgsz 91 points92 points93 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Men are lonely, women most affected.

And men to blame

[+]EnvironmentalWar4627 -165 points-164 points-163 points 4 years ago (139 children) | Copy Link

Who is to blame for the women's issue that men have trouble forming meaningful relationships with other men?

[–]Jakeybaby125 96 points97 points98 points 4 years ago (120 children) | Copy Link

Because it's not a women's issue. It's caused by women. The way they frame this is that men don't not form feminine relationships with men. We have no problem doing it in our own way. It's that feminists force us to do it in a feminine way to combat 'Toxic Masculinity' and then are surprised when some men use their gfs as emotional tampons

[+]EnvironmentalWar4627 -89 points-88 points-87 points 4 years ago (119 children) | Copy Link

Because it's not a women's issue. It's caused by women.

So you feel men don't form meaningful bonds with other men and it's women's fault? And because of women, men use their spouses as 'emotional tampons'?

What should women do to help?

[–]Jakeybaby125 53 points54 points55 points 4 years ago (118 children) | Copy Link

No. Men do form meaningful bonds with other men. It's just that women attempt to barge into them and then complain when men use them as an emotional tampon

Idk, maybe leave men alone to form their own groups

[+]velvetalocasia -52 points-51 points-50 points 4 years ago (117 children) | Copy Link

How do women „barge in“?

[–]Jakeybaby125 51 points52 points53 points 4 years ago (96 children) | Copy Link

By making it all about them. Men have to just deal with it because feminist pressure would forbid then from not doing it. Every time something male-only pops up, feminists always want to either destroy it or take it over to get rid of 'Toxic Masculinity' then complain when men use women as emotional tampons

[+]velvetalocasia -55 points-54 points-53 points 4 years ago (95 children) | Copy Link

What? So it’s detrimental to your friendships that women are not shut out of clubs (or what do you mean?) anymore?

[–]Jakeybaby125 45 points46 points47 points 4 years ago (68 children) | Copy Link

No. Problem is that women come into them and then try and take them over and then kick the men out. It's textbook woke feminist bs. 1. Male-only club set up 2. Feminists demand to be let in 3. Feminists demand for it to be changed for their liking 4. Feminists kick the men out

[+]velvetalocasia -38 points-37 points-36 points 4 years ago (67 children) | Copy Link

Do you have a particular case where this happened?

[–]Angryasfk 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

Well women have their own clubs, and that’s ok, but if you have a “male club” it’s sexist and discriminatory and must open to women. Judging by your previous comments, I’m sure you’d either deny this double standard exists, or somehow pretend it’s equal.

[+]velvetalocasia -12 points-11 points-10 points 4 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

[–]velvetalocasia 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I really rarely go with my husband to meet his friends and I don’t know any women who would forbid her partner from seeing his friends alone. That sounds abusive.

A possible break up is one of the reasons why both partners should maintain there own friendships.

[–]Big_Chocolate_420 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

seen and experienced it time and time again

it's not "abusive" she is clingy or want to spend more time with him... but he shouldn't met his Friends again in this bar because he will smoke and she hates this smell so he won't meet his friends every two months now it's every 6 months or once a year and then they become parents and they will meet even less

yes it is abusive behaviour but saying it out loud is forbidden

[–]velvetalocasia -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Interesting „then they become parents“…..you are aware that keeping a tiny human alive and well is a lot of work and it’s natural to invest a lot of time into that?

[–]cain8708 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Why does it have to be a women's issue though? If a guy has a problem making friends then that's something he needs to work on. If the person he is dating is saying "I don't want you to make friends and only talk to me" that's a toxic relationship and a huge red flag. If it goes a step further and it's now "emotional labour" then not only is that some bullshit but clearly someone isn't ready to be I'm the grown up world.

Seriously. It says "I want you to share some stuff but not too much because I don't want to actually know what's going on with your life." Thats not an actual relationship.

[+]EnvironmentalWar4627 -33 points-32 points-31 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Right. Toxic women are toxic. But it does seem that women have issues with their spouses having only them that they connect with on a deep level. It's a male issue obviously, but women struggle with it too.

You don't have to choose which one is worse or compare the two issues to be able to discuss it.

[–]cain8708 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess I'm confused here. So men should share with women, but not share too much. They should go find other people they could share things with.

Since its not clear what should and shouldn't be shared with the significant other and what should be shared with the friend I'm sure there won't be complaints, and articles written, of women complaining men who try to follow this are now sharing too much with their friends that they've made. "Yea I wanted them to talk to other people besides me but I didn't want him to share that."

Its not about trying to compare which side has it worse. It's trying to tell one side to do stuff, and then complain when they do it. It wasn't too long ago men were told "they don't open up" and now it's "they open up too much". While trying to somehow meet the first demand of sharing it became a women's issue?

I imagine a lot of people who will want to share this article with their male spouse's will change their mind if they ever meet the person(s) the dude shares their thoughts with.

[–]impastoe 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

The common female problem of "my boyfriend is trying to connect with me on an emotional level too much! Ew!"

Your brain is irreparably broken.

[–]EnvironmentalWar4627 -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

You don't think being overly emotionally dependant is a real problem? Really?

[–]anonymouslionn 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Ah, yes. For the longest time, women emotionally depended on men. Wasn’t much of an issue then? It was men’s duty to support their wives? But not the other way around?

[–]EnvironmentalWar4627 -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

So you feel women owe it to men to support them emotionally and they are wrong for suggesting otherwise?

[–]anonymouslionn 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well in a relationship, it should be mutual support

But your SO/partner shouldn’t be your sole support system. And that’s the issue here. So yes, I feel for women being the sole support, however, being a man, and part of this men’s rights sub, I feel more so for the man actually going through the loneliness, and not having other avenues of support

And I’m sure many of the guys using their so/partner as their sole support also hate it internally, and will end up feeling like a burden to that sole support

[–]CarHungry 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, it's like women having their issues from being overweight and some jackass comes in and says "WELL AHCKTUALLY, WOMEN BEING OVERWEIGHT IS A MEN"S ISSUE TOO".

[–]Enzi42 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So you feel women owe it to men to support them emotionally and they are wrong for suggesting otherwise?

Yes, yes they are in fact wrong for suggesting otherwise and I can’t believe I have to explain this to someone whom I presume is a grown adult.

If you are in a relationship with another person, yes, you do in fact “owe” them certain things as an unspoken agreement and as a matter of common decency, depending on the nature of that relationship.

If, as a woman, you are in a romantic relationship with a man yes it falls to you to actually listen to your partner’s emotions and have empathy and compassion for them. Just as the man should show compassion and, if not understanding, at least attention and desire to help his partner’s emotional state.

This ”I don’t owe you shit, not even if we’re in a relationship! Got that, man-thing?” attitude I see circulating more and more tells me all I need to know about the women saying it.

Proudly declaring that you want nothing to do with aiding your supposedly romantic partner, as a way to assert your freedom shows a chip on one’s shoulder the size of Jupiter. It’s the mark of a woman who feels that she has been used and is now lashing out and aggressively pushing up her boundaries against anyone who would “use” her again.

And that’s fair enough. But no one with that attitude, man or woman, has any business entering into a partnership that is based on supporting each other.

All people with that attitude do is hurt innocent people who didn’t ask to get smacked in the face with their “partner’s” baggage.

So there. I explained why yes, that attitude you are questioning is very wrong and is the sign of an unhealthy and agitated mind full of unresolved anger.

  • And yes, before anyone says anything, I did use RE8’s Lady Dimitrescu’s signature insult as a way to mock this mindset.

[–]EnvironmentalWar4627 -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There are levels of support. You can be overly reliant on people. That exists. The idea that you think its impossible is very strange. Some people are capable of being leaned on more than others. And if your partner is leaning on you too hard, it should be addressed.

[–]DekajaSukunda 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you don't want to support someone emotionally then don't fucking be in a relationship.

Sex and emotional support are things that are... like... supposed to happen in a relationship. Hell we could argue that's even the point of being in a relationship. But for some reason, if men expect this from their SOs... we are acting entitled...

Women can complain about men being an emotional burden. Women can also complain about men not showing enough emotion. Women can also complain about men not pleasing them sexually. But if men complain about any of these things... we're entitled.

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They don’t “owe it to men” in general. But they do “owe it” to their partners. You’d be the first (along with the feminists) to condemn a husband who wasn’t supporting his wife emotionally. It should work the other way round surely!

[–]Angryasfk 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

How many of these women objected to him spending time with his friends? At least early in the relationship? Quite a few, and even more demanded to be included no doubt. It’s a bit rich for people who do that, wedge themselves between a guy and his friends and then a few years later moan that HE is too clingy!

And in Australia there is a movement, the “Mens Shed” movement which was established to combat this sort of issue. And guess who’s been pushing their way in, WOMEN. With full feminist support. The same feminists who demand all female spaces.

Perhaps those bemoaning the “burden” women have to carry need to ponder if in some cases at least these women didn’t help to produce the very situation they are complaining about: or the activists and commentators accept that they’ve played a role in disrupting the old forms of male bonding, and the new ones as well.

I’m sick of the double standard that women need and are allowed to have their own female spaces, but If men have one it’s sexist and discriminatory and must be opened to women, and reconfigured to make them comfortable.

[–]Angryasfk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right. So it’s a “woman’s issue”!

[–]Comfortable_Ad_9154 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Their has been a gradual vilification of Male relationships/male spaces. The positive societal perception of "going out with the girls" vs the negative perception of "going out with the boys" as just one example. The ones to blame are the ones who paint men/male spaces in broad strokes as opposed to pointing to bad actors..... to the point of a man who wants to be "one of the good ones" might be hesitant as they don't want to be labeled toxic or forming a "boys club" as just one example.

[–]RingosTurdFace 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Consider how the behaviours are painted -

traditionally when a man returned from work and his wife wanted to speak to him (perhaps not having had adult company all day), he would have been portrayed as cold and uncaring towards her - there was sympathy for the woman and the man was at fault. The man did not display enough emotion to his wife.

Here it’s the opposite, and yet still the man is at fault for wanting to talk to his partner on her return from work.

Men’s needs and actions are always portrayed negatively which makes it harder for men than women to get the support they need or even behave in a way that if women behaved in they would get sympathy for and would be addressed to meet their needs.

That's exactly what the article say: supposedly it increases women's so called emotional labour.

[–]CrowMagpie 88 points89 points90 points 4 years ago* (17 children) | Copy Link

That's not what the article says though

Straight from the article:

"the phenomenon of male loneliness, including the way more and more women are becoming the sole emotional outlet for their male partners"

"men no longer understand how to form emotional bonds with other men and develop genuine friendships, and it's women who are bearing the burden of that"

"the pandemic put a spotlight on the extra emotional labor too many men unwittingly expect their wives and girlfriends to perform"

The entire penultimate paragraph was particularly offensive.

[–]SunnyRacer1910 65 points66 points67 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

"Emotional Labor", why do they see this as a frickin burden. Both parties need to emotionally support each other and the moment one of them regards this obligation as a burden, that relationship is starting to go down the drain.

[–]anonymouslionn 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes. Men can be emotional tampons no problem

Women returning the favor, it’s burdensome. It’s labour. Perhaps we should pay for that service?

Why do women interact with men at all?

[–]CrowMagpie 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why do women interact with men at all?

Every once in a while, I see feminists complain that men refusing to date feminists is bigotry; how dare we withhold ourselves from them?!?

My reaction is always 'nothing you have ever done or said has ever made me think you'd want to date me; partly as a male, mostly as somebody who believes in equality, not feminism'.

[–]CrowMagpie 66 points67 points68 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Emotional Labor", why do they see this as a frickin burden.

They're feminists. Human decency, and empathy for others (especially male others) do not come naturally to them.

[–]mistralol[🍰] 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cause men provide the services.

Women consume the service.

Havn't you figured this out yet that men are not entitled to consume any services?

[–]lestratege 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Using their brain is seen as detrimental for females hence they would rather not,and thus when they have to, it's by definition exploited labor.

Basically, when male does something for female, it's considered that he does it for his benefit.

When female does something for male, by definition it cannot be for her own benefit, so it's considered emotional labour exploited by the male.

These concepts are just begging the question: anything that benefits a female is by definition benefiting the male as well and is thus justfied, but anything benefiting the male is by definition solely benefiting the male and is thus exploitation.

[–]anonymouslionn 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nailed it. Completely dehumanizing. It’s pretty sick

[–]__Monopoly___3 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I fucking hate how romantic intimacy is framed as "labor" so often now. Like, what do you want? For your relationship to just be impersonal and based on nothing more than superficialities. I feel like so many women nowadays are fed this message like men expressing any emotion to them is somehow exploitative. It's not wrong for a partner or a friend to be an emotional outlet, that's one of the fundamental virtues of building meaningful bonds without human beings. Don't you want the people closest to you to really care about you and understand you on a profound level? That article is trash

[–]CrowMagpie 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For your relationship to just be impersonal and based on nothing more than superficialities

That's why I hate the term 'partner' for a gf/bf or spouse or lover. It makes romance sound like a business relationship; and what are the implications there?

[–]tullystenders -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Its laborious, that's why its framed as "labor"

[–]__Monopoly___3 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you care enough about someone, then you care about the issues they face too. If it feels like labor to listen and sympathize then you dont really care, and are just using them. But I do understand it can go the other way too. Some people do use their partner more as a resource for emotional support. Bottom line is, I think a healthy relationship allows both people involved to feel like they can express their issues with the other, and feel supported and loved.

"extra emotional labor too many men unwittingly expect their wives and girlfriends to perform"

[–]yoitsericc 79 points80 points81 points 4 years ago (47 children) | Copy Link

The article had me up until the toxic masculinity part.

Seriously? You think men are lonely because of toxic masculinity? We're lonely because of a decades long erosion of male spaces and because traditional institutions have been engineered to isolate and weaken men to the point that we no longer feel confident enough to connect and make friends.

Men struggle with loneliness because society isolates and shames them making them the butt of most jokes, especially the stupid, bumbling father trope which is overplayed and insulting.

We also sacrifice everything for our families including our social lives and our hobbies. We are told we need to make these sacrifices in order to be seen as worthy of marriage and children - otherwise we are seen as useless incels unfit for any of it.

Trash take, but the sketch sounds like it had some good perspective on this issue.

erosion of male spaces

This is actually kinda true. My Uncle and Granddad used to belong to a men's only smoking club. It was a pool hall that stunk of cigars (I don't smoke but love that smell for some reason) and he would take his kids and then nephews when they turned 21 to the cigar club but the smoking part was knocked on the head when it became illegal to smoke indoors and then there were complaints that it was males only so they introduced "couples nights" which was usually Sundays and Fridays, then more complaints came and the owner just decided to sell up and leave. I swear to god its a women's hair salon now.

It was a small area in Plumstead. I haven't been past in years so it might be something different now. So yeah I agree men's spaces is going or mostly gone. I tried to start up a men's only book club but people oddly don't want to read much - even though it wasn't about reading just men getting together and chatting.

I had a friend get upset that she wasn't allowed into a gay men only campground! "That's sexist and can't be legal!". Nope, it's a private club just like Curves. The campground is open to anyone who has a membership. Men, women, whatever.

But women don't get memberships.

It’s funny because a lot of the time some women and groups demand safe spaces but the moment they feel excluded it becomes a problem that they need to shout about.

[–]DekajaSukunda 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Dude women literally celebrate bachelorette parties and birthdays at gay bars.

You have this space for gay men. This safe space for gay men. That's supposed to celebrate them and let them express their femininity and explore their sexuality like they can't do outside.

And women entered those spaces. And use those spaces to celebrate themselves. And gay men can't even complain about it.

They started allowing it because gay men are a minority and you need customers to keep the business running. But now it's like a moral obligation.

[–]Dwoodward85 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I’m not disagreeing with you in case that wasn’t/isn’t clear. I totally agree. I think it’s wrong that people can’t create spaces that they feel comfortable in and are able to share it with like minded or same gendered people…at least if you’re a bloke.

[–]DekajaSukunda 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I get it! I was just ellaborating on that point. Like everyone deserves safe spaces... but when gay men ask for the same thing, it's misogyny. And what's worse is now men are asking for those safe spaces because straight chicks are running around policing the ways consent works within the gay community.

[–]Dwoodward85 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If even the mens sheds are pushed to admit women (something specifically set up to combat male loneliness and mental health issues), I don’t see anything as being off limits. Even if feminists don’t specifically target mens groups (and that’s a big “if”) as soon as some random woman demands admittance the feminists are rock solid behind her and against the “male chauvinists”. Of course women only clubs, groups, rooms etc are “completely different”.

[–]Dwoodward85 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. All true. It takes a legion of men to get anything changed that benefit men but a single woman and it’s changed.

"Toxic masculinity" I think in this instance works both ways: the women in our lives expect us to live up to some toxic, masculine idea in their heads, and when we want to play video games or something that they don't find masculine enough, purposeful, or fun, we get shit on for having that hobby. I've had girlfriends do it, I've had my wife do it, and I've had female friends do it. They don't even really think about it, it's that ingrained. If I'm not acting "manly" enough, there's something wrong with me, not with the way they view masculinity.

Meanwhile, my viewpoint on "acting manly" is: I'll do what I want that doesn't affect others negatively, and anyone that has a problem with it can go fuck themselves. You're going to look at me sideways because I wanted a cider instead of a beer, and you think that's "girly"? Go fuck yourself. Many times, the people with this stuff in their head don't even have an alternative activity in mind, they just know that I'm not supposed to enjoy myself "that way": it's all about control.

[–]Angryasfk 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That’s the truth of the rubbery term “toxic masculinity”. Feminists love to insist it’s only about “bad stuff”, and even claim that “mens rights types” invented it. It’s only supposed to mean “bullying” and being “forced” to be stoic and all that. And now, yet again, it’s used without irony to describe anything they don’t like about men. And yet feminists wonder why we bristle at the term.

[–]jadedlonewolf89 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My experience has been if you stay silent they’ll hate it and shit all over you for it, if you speak about your problems then they’ll one up you and then shit all over you for not giving them any sympathy.

Feminism generally blames men for everything that women are “dissatisfied” over. So of course men are always wrong, because everything is always somehow our fault and women always have it worse (that’s what “patriarchy” means).

[–]tricky_trig 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's some aspects of toxic masculinity I can get. Raising unempathetic, whiny men just perpetuates a lot of bullshit.

But overall, toxic masculinity feels like circular logic continually trying to reprove a problem that doesn't exist to the same extent.

"The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence towards women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If an individual is not successful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on patriarchal men to enact rituals of power that will assault his self-esteem" - Bell hooks

t just wondering where your perception of term comes from. Exactly what feminist literature have you engaged with? Simone de beauvoir? Butler?

[–]asdfman2000 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

That's just saying men are forced to be unemotional, and blames other men for it.

Which is ironic, considering women are by far the harshest enforcers of that particular social norm.

Both men and women enforce stereotype (gender roles), but have you never seen boys in school targeting another boy for crying, or not being "tough" enough?

Men change their behavior to get women, but why are women so desirable to men, but men aren't so to women? Because hollywood, your friends, and your boss all idolize women. That's partially why women generally get more support than men do. Women have inherent value, men start at 0 and have to claw their way up.

[–]asdfman2000 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

but have you never seen boys in school targeting another boy for crying, or not being "tough" enough?

Yes, but it was both girls and boys in school. As an adult, it's solely women, who are absolutely brutal at it.

The same "feminists" who decry toxic masculinity post selfies drinking from coffee mugs labeled "male tears". So compassionate.

Men change their behavior to get women, but why are women so desirable to men, but men aren't so to women?

Males in most species have to "perform" to attract a mate. One big avenue of mate competition for humans is closed off (fighting / raiding), so attraction is now the dominant means.

[–]Guysforcorn -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Guysforcorn -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ive literally just provided an example?

The point of the quote isnt "men are bad", its that our societies are designed in such a way that men are being forced to be unemotional and willing to self-sacrifice to a harmful degree.

Which is ironic, considering women are by far the harshest enforcers of that particular social norm.

Patriarchy cant be substitued by the word "men". Patriarchy is better understood as a society that has historically had specific men (not men as a whole. Feudal societies were patriarchal, despite the fact that 99% of men were peasants) in power, which has then developed specific institutions under which every person suffers. Women can still serve as enforcers in patriarchy, nothing about this is ironic.

Patriarchy cant be substitued by the word "men".

Your quote singled-out men as the enforcers.

patriarchal men

Do you not even read the shit you quote or spout? Feminist theorists don't even bother to hide that they think that "patriarchy" just means men.

[–]Guysforcorn -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It sayss nothing about enforcement here. Rituals of power/creating instutional practices is not the same as enforcement. Thats why "patriarchal men" is used and not "men". Because its the specific men, the men in power, that have the capabilities to actually maintain/create these instutions.

You are aware of the judge/cop distinction right? Cops can enforce laws, but they cant create them, thats the judges

Would you agree that a patriarchal society could still oppress non-patriarchal men, men that arent in power?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Bell Hooks, to her credit, didn't use the awful, counterproductive term "Toxic Masculinity", though she was still stuck in the feminist vocabulary of Patriarchy.

[–]Guysforcorn -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Whats so bad about the word??

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Main problems are:

  • The public's definition of "masculinity" is varied and vague. Most people do not hold the sociological definition of the word, instead connecting it with maleness as well as manliness. So, the placement of "toxic" next to it has the effect of labeling, ironically reinforcing toxic gender expectations on men.
  • People can easily observe an imbalance between this and the equivalent female term, "internalised misogyny". While that term makes it clear that the person is a victim of social expectations, TM is easily interpreted to suggest that the man himself is toxic, ie. victim blaming. There's a reason "Toxic Femininity" has never been popularised.
  • The term was introduced to the wider public in the context of 2019 and #metoo. This means it was interpreted as a tool for blaming men for things done to women, not for helping men identify what has been done to them.

Here's some more argumentation and discussion.

Look, I get it. The term seems to have a lot of rhetorical power and seems like it would be really powerful for helping men to name and defect from the gender expectations that have limited their wellbeing for centuries.

Maybe, if we were still in the 90s when the term was first coined by the Men's Mythopoetic Movement, then men might have seen that it was a term for them, and not against them. But nobody gave a shit about men then, and we don't live in those times anymore. Now it's a war.

[–]sneedchuckfuck 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Oh please. You can never convince me on the utility of a hateful phrase such as "toxic masculinity". Just use the word "misandry", is that so hard?

[–]Guysforcorn -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago* (18 children) | Copy Link

So youre literally just mad about your perceived individual connotations of specific words. Good to know we're just arguing semantics

[–]sneedchuckfuck 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Aha. So you admit it's "just words". How hard is it for you to just drop it? If you really cared about men, wouldn't you listen to the men that you claim you want to help?

[–]Guysforcorn -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

? I still believe the point is correct, whichever word we use isnt really that important to me. Men and women suffer under our current societal structure, each in their own way due to how historically our socities have been constructured. This rings true wheter i use the word "toxic masculinity" or misandry

Idk i think i do a lot. I help out with local job conditions and stuff, usually with strikes in dangerous fields where men are usually forced to work and suffer injuries. I believe the primary reason for the the gender based discrimination we see today comes from jobs and stuff (just because thats the thing our modern day societies are structured around)

[–]sneedchuckfuck 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

But the words do matter. Hell, isn't that what the world has come to now? So how can you even talk about helping men and getting them to express their emotions when they openly tell you they have a problem with a divisive word like "toxic masculinity" and yet you insist on using it? Why do you have a hard time divorcing the concept of what you are trying to say from that failed phrase?

[–]Guysforcorn -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I think that word means different things to different people, and thats why conversations about it always turns ugly. I want to bridge the gap and actually confront people with what it describes, so people who fundementally agree dont get angry at each other for using the no-no word.

How do you feel the war on toxic masculinity led to men being unable to form meaningful relationships? I've never heard anyone suggest that theory before.

[–]ubertrashcat 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

Let's start with how therapy is taught today. I've got a female friend who recently completed her MSc in psychology and she's been telling me this for years. Essentially any traditionally social male behavior is deemed undesirable. Men in groups are violent, reinforce rivalry and patriarchy, encourage each other to suppress emotion, one-up each other, perpetuate mistreatment of women and mistreat weaker men. This is reflected in a broader cultural narrative that male grouping behaviors should be suppressed, discouraged and looked down upon. There is some truth to that of course, but not all such behavior is toxic. So the behaviors are disrupted for example by introducing girls into boys' groups. I myself have experienced this, we were forcibly sat with girls in elementary school because that calmed us down. This was in the 90's.

Symbolically, there's always been this myth of a female taming a male beast, holding him down at home and tenderizing him. The social narrative has finally made this possible because men don't want to upset their partners and cave in and stop engaging in group male activities. But there's a trap here. This symbolic ideal was never meant to be actualized. The women don't end up with a tamed beast at home, they end up with a grown puppy who's conditioned into pleasing them. And that infuriates them because that's not what they're after. And they can't engage with their partners in a way they need because it escapes their model of human interaction which is based on nourishment, need-meeting and empathy.

As such the males end up in situations in which they don't have their emotional needs met. And they often don't realize that their female partners can't fulfill them. But they continue trying to get that from them, much to the mutual dissatisfaction with the relationship.

[–]asdfman2000 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

So the behaviors are disrupted for example by introducing girls into boys' groups.

I have never seen girls introduced to a male-only group and NOT had it blow that group up eventually. Women always stir up drama and break up the friend group (even sometimes unintentionally just by causing rivalries for their attention).

[–]Shadowdragon409 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My ex best friend of 4 years got upset at a mutual friend for sleeping with a woman who had a boyfriend (they had the boyfriend's permission, as he was in the military and couldn't please her.) She was upset because she had an ex who cheated on her. So she blew up a little bit then left the discord server we shared and stopped talking to our mutual friend.

Like wtf. That had nothing to do with you, why are you upset? I don't talk to her anymore, but for entirely different reasons

[–]asdfman2000 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've had probably at least 4-5 different social groups blow up when women were introduced. These were interest-based groups, where oftentimes the women had no actual interest in the subject.

One example: a close-knit programming IRC channel in the 90's. Small group of friends who called everyone by their IRL names (big deal back in the 90's for online chat). Some dudes who've been friends for over a decade ceased talking to each other over some stupid drama causing moron who had no knowledge or interest in programming. I was a teen at the time and she even came at me because I used the phrase "that's crazy" to sympathize with some stupid story she was telling, thinking I was calling her crazy.

[–]tenchineuro 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is reflected in a broader cultural narrative that male grouping behaviors should be suppressed, discouraged and looked down upon.

I'm unclear on why this is specific to men. Female dominance is expressed differently of course, but these kinds of things happen in groups of women as well.

[–]ubertrashcat 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But it's not something that's culturally repressed in the mainstream, breakfast-TV-school-psychologist narrative! If anything, "girls getting together" is championed and cheered.

[–]tenchineuro 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Agreed.

I'm just saying that to the extent this is a problem, it's a problem for men's groups and women's groups alike.

I want to challenge the attitude you have here about male-only spaces.

I am of the view that structured and semi-structured social spaces centred around activities are more critical to male friendship than to female friendship, and that male-only social spaces have been a key part of men's wellbeing for most of history, especially since the industrial revolution.

This does not mean that men cannot informally socialise, nor that men should not also participate in community spaces that include women.

Instead of answering with these sassy comebacks that are not nearly as clever as you think they are, could you please explain why these spaces must be changed? Why is it wrong for men to crave separatist spaces? Why do you feel such a strong need to mock men who'd like to have spaces like that? Would it be ok if I decided to invade separatist spaces for women? If I have no ill intentions, should I be allowed my way in, the way women must be allowed in our spaces? "The woke mob has ruined everything that I care about, like going to Augusta country club and expecting to see zero women."

Feminism is always searching safe spaces for women (where men is not allowed), but when mens wants a safe space it's viewed as discrimination to women.

If a women wants a space without men and eventually get it, why a men can't have a space without women? Feminism mostly uses this double standard, and THAT is the problem.

[–]chillchillbill 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, when women are discriminated against it’s viewed as discrimination, you’re spot on.

Incels and blaming their problems on some vague notion of feminism, name a better duo.

How is that incel?

I already told you: whining about some vague notion of feminism is incel-like behavior.

There’s plenty of women who bemoan that the man in their life spends too much time with his friends.

[–]DekajaSukunda 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

"Masculinity makes it hard to form bonds with other men"

Bullshit. Masculinity makes it easier. Historically men's friendships with each other have lasted much longer than women's. Men had an easier time getting along with other men than women did.

The demonization of male spaces and the rise of the internet and video games made men prefer lonely activities such as those, and forming online communities instead of real-life friendships.

Portraying men as bumbling idiotic children that need other idiotic children to yell "Rick!" and "Morty!" at doesn't help. We need to remind men of the strength and power our bonds have historically had. We need to empower men to reclaim their friendships as a positive thing.

Feminism's insistence on belittling, condescending, infantilizing and villifying men doesn't help at all and only makes men's issues (and, arguably, even women's issues) worse.

To all the men in this sub, go out and form more friendships with men. They are positive, they are great. You're missing out on a lot. We are mature. We are smart. We are interesting. We are usually even better listeners than women. Male friendships are nothing and have never been anything like the stupidity depicted in this video.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

A few final thoughts on this topic because I think you and I share a lot of the same opinions on this issue.

Based on some comments here, there are guys who took the humour in a positive way, despite the obviously insulting aspects that you and I have noted, the women-centric tone of the skit and the article, and the terrible quote that you commented on.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a typical guy and I don't tend to respond well to a lot of satirical styles of comedy (because I am always looking for the underlying agenda), but I realise many men do.

I think this will ultimately have a net-positive effect on men getting out and forming friendships, and eventually without female supervision. So I see that as a win.

[–]DekajaSukunda 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's the women "taking out" men to these parks like they were children or dogs that I find insulting. I grew up with an emotionally abusive and overbearing mom, so I'm not very receptive to being infantilized like that. This is one of the reasons I avoid relationships with women, tbh. Once you grow up with a mom like that you become particularly sensitive to all the small things women do that infantilize men... and they are so common...

I believe men will start seeking out more relationships with men if we empower them to do that. If we portray men's friendships as something normal and healthy - which it has always been - instead of acting like it's the cure to a disease.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's the women "taking out" men to these parks like they were children or dogs that I find insulting.

Oh yeah, I agree. But some men seem to be able to accept it as absurd parody rather than "too close to home".

acting like it's the cure to a disease

The way I see it, we're at an unprecedented low point for male community, but its benefits are self evident except in the rare cases when it can become dysfunctional. In other words, it doesn't matter too much why men start rebuilding it, only that they do. In a few decades' time, we won't remember or care about why. This period we're living in will just seem like a weird time when heaps of people were sad and isolated for some reason.

[–]DekajaSukunda 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My point is, if we treat it like a cure to a disease - like men are both ill and the illness - men will just feel worse about themselves and will be less likely to seek out friendships.

Think of it like obesity... if you shame the obese kids into losing weight, they'll grow depressed and self-loathing and binge-eat more. The best way to inspire them to lose weight is to portray weight loss in a positive light, and show them that it can be done, and give them tips and support to do it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I agree, that is the best way. I wish there was more content like that.

I'm actually a little surprised that there aren't more unironic films and TV series about male friendship and men overcoming loneliness. Aside from men, I think a large female audience would really enjoy it.

But media seems to be stuck in a "men are the problem" holding pattern right now. This article gives a perfect example.

[–]DekajaSukunda 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

American media is trash. If you want positive portrayals of male friendships, literally watch any anime ever made.

The sad thing is a lot of boys watch those animes... but they seem more interested in living in them as a form of escapism instead of actually trying to form friendships like that irl (without the epicness and superpowers, obviously).

It really saddens me people talk so much about how "patriarchy makes it hard for men to connect to each other". This has only been true for like 30 years. Men have historically made more friends and longer friendships than women.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

patriarchy makes it hard for men to connect to each other

It's certainly an oversimplification of history, yeah.

Partly because of limiting concepts like patriarchy, there's insufficient exploration into what actually happened with male gender expectations across the centuries.

In particular, we underestimate the generational trauma brought onto men during the 20th Century; the world wars, the rise of the suburban Nuclear Family ideal, mass media, the collapse of local community in the latter decades of the century, etc.

Instead, it's all put down to a vague set of traditional norms millennia old, or the recent impact of feminism and the change in women's status.

I'd go back a little further than 30 years, but yeah it's only gotten worse over the last 30 years.

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points71 points 4 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

Men absolutely do need to rebuild their own forms of community together. The collapse of local community as catalogued in books like Bowling Alone had a disproportionately bad effect on men and on men's mental health.

But the idea of women supervising men at a park like they're dogs? Fuck that.

[–]mistralol[🍰] 57 points58 points59 points 4 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Theres just one problem with that. Ever attempt I have seen of decent men trying to build a small local community. The women come along and fuck it up.

Like during lockdown there a bunch of guys setup a walking group for men. So men started to join. Then the women joined so the men objected to this and tossed them out. Next up was the meetup group was suspended because it was "sexist" because it didn't permit women and the women complained.

Then the women complain the men are so lonley and how women are most affected.

[–]Angryasfk 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As I’ve said elsewhere. In Australia a group, The Men’s Shed movement was established precisely to address this issue (although it was focused on newly retired men). And guess what many of these affiliated groups are now just called “Sheds” because women showed up and demanded to be admitted. Feminists need to work out what they want, and stop complaining about the results of their social changes. If they really don’t like them, they should reflect upon their previous demands.

[–]mistralol[🍰] 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah some of the men here are still standing their ground a bit more for their men sheds.

When you read the comments from the women who oppose them. Its like they just don't understand at all what the entire thing is about.

There even things like this lol "He claimed there were even concerns from some wives of husbands who attend that women who joined up would be “looking for husbands”."

Same old shit. Men try to help men women most affected.....

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I suspect it’s worse then not understanding in many cases, it’s that they simply don’t care.

[–]DekajaSukunda 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is soooooooooo true and it really, really pisses me off how women (especially feminists) are completely unwilling to own up to any responsibility.

My college was doing one of those "new masculinities" courses. I legit thought they were a good idea, but I had a problem with it. They weren't separatist. When women made their feminists assemblies, they were always separatist and were very adamant about it.

I kindly proposed making this a separatist instance. I said men would feel more comfortable talking about this with groups of other men. I said, by not making it separatist, men who are turned off by feminism will definitely not go; and the ones that will go are the feminist types that may be going just to flirt with some chicks.

I was refused. They said if this was separatist the discussion could go to "dark places" and that we could be having "anti-women" discussions. They said it was good if the men who were turned off by feminism were left out (aren't those the type of men you want to change though???)

I said... maybe men need to have a place to vent about women, and maybe having that discussion will help them re-think that... They refused. The courses had to be mixed, they had to be planned and supervised by women, women had to be the ones setting the topics.

It pissed me off. This is a serious issue. Feminists complain so much about men being "man-babies", but they are the ones who insist on infantilizing us.

[–]mistralol[🍰] 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They weren't separatist. When women made their feminists assemblies, they were always separatist and were very adamant about i

Yup the moement you realize its one rule for one group and another rule for another and then look for that across everything thats being said. The entire fundemantal system of their "woke" stuff completly breaks and undermins its self.

> They refused. The courses had to be mixed, they had to be planned and supervised by women, women had to be the ones setting the topics.

Yeah and thats to prevent men stating the first item on the agenda which is why are women here setting our agenda. I see the modern feminist stuff and their rule set. Same happens across the entire woke movement / ideaology.

Theres normally a really simple counter argumen. If you swap men / women out of the same sentance would you want the rule the other way around? There is no simple way to say no to this without a double standard. Its why they don't permit the agenda to be uncontrolled in the first place.

> unwilling to own up to any responsibility

Well I have a story for you.... and yes they don't accept responsibility. However it doesn't mean they are not immune to consequances. I come from a small populated area and I work in the tech sector. There probably about 10-20k people and probably only 200 major companys in that tech sector so most people know most company and whos who. Espeically if they are "organizers" of things or make a massive fuckup.

Theres a "leading feminist" who has now been promoted up to a kinda level of a tech lead / manager as people do when they get into their 30's / 40's. Shes been doing those roles now for about 6-8 years. Has worked in 3 different companies. The first 2 companies no longer exist. For the simple reason she pushed this stuff in diversity really really hard and anyone working in those places were basically fearful of saying something. So like many people their well being is tied to their job. So all the good people immeidatly leave and go to other places (quite easy to do here). Then give a "polite" reason for leaving. "Its not really my thing", "I wanna exploer something different". This normally takes about a year to happen. eg She starts. Does 3 months implemets diversity takes another 3 months and then 6 months the people who can leave have left.

So the 2nd 12 months of this is what then drives the company into the ground. Its can't hire anyone because by now it has a reputation and everyone who is smart enough (also the people with the options) knows to stay well away from it. It also has no in-house skill. The company suvivies over the year by eating its reserves then crashes hard into the ground.

That one single women is responsible so far has crashed 2 companies. Loosing her job both times and of course nobody want to hire her. Except other people who are driving that narrative. Took her 6 months to find a job (this is in conditions where you struggle to get applicatinos to a job ie you get like 3 people per month apply).

By the sounds of it shes well on her way of crashing her 3rd company. Shes been there for 6 months. Its doing its "rats off a sinking ship"

But by pure arrogance by preventing anyone saying what its doing. You will be SJW publically executed so nobody does. But their actions speak much louder than words.

Sometimes these patterns of responsibility and consequances are not immeidate. They just take time to unroll... The feminist / woke stuff is a "big picture" "long game" style of stuff....

The signs are not always obvious until they hit you in the face either. gilette advert is a good example of that..... "Feminist guide of how to lose 50% of your customer base in 35 seconds."

My take on the whole thing is the feminist drive really started about 5-7 years ago and is probably currently going to peek over the next 5-10 years especially when a lot of people start to get to posiitons of actual power / decision making. Then everything is going to fall down around them and leave them fully holding the bag.

[–]DekajaSukunda 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What really pisses me off is I legit wanted to help. I wasn't like "you dumb bitch, don't come tell me how to be a man!". I just felt, as a man, that this would be more productive if it were separatist. But they were so dismissive of everything I had to say.

And boy don't you even dare try to show up to those "new masculinities" courses and defend traditional masculinity in any way. They will roll their eyes at you and the cucks will yell at you. Because you know this thing feminism says, how men impose their vision of masculinity on other men and judge and humiliate men for not fitting those standards? Feminist cucks do that SOOOO blatantly, but feminists don't mind because this is a "hegemonic masculinity" that fits their agenda.

[–]mistralol[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah and the expression goes something like don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Thasts exaclty what the feminists are doing. They are not queueing up to the dirty, messy, dangerous jobs and sooner or later the men won't either. Cause they did it for women.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I'm aware this happens sometimes, but I think this is a trend that is coming to an end.

In the meantime, here's a few ways to reduce the chance of this happening in future:

  • Choose an activity that is more specifically for men, where there is an inherent rationale for keeping it that way, eg. I'm part of a men's barbershop chorus. While there are mixed choruses, many men prefer the male-voice sound. That's enough of an "excuse" for those men who don't want to admit that they value having a male-only social activity.
  • Incorporate the idea of the group as a men's mental health thing. Of course you don't have to present it that way publicly, but it's a great defense if your group is threatened in the way you described. This is how groups like Mens Sheds do it.
  • Look to the way men's only lodges like Freemasons do it. Women partners, etc. can come to certain social events but not to the main meetings.

[–]mistralol[🍰] 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I don't think its a trend coming ot the end. There is quite literally a group of women out there activly destroying these group by any means possible and its not slowing down.

[+][deleted] -17 points-16 points-15 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

OK, well feel free not to try, then. I hope other men keep trying, because I think male community will be among the most effective things to improve things for men over the next few decades, and not just in the area of loneliness.

[–]mistralol[🍰] 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

OK, well feel free not to try

Dunno where you got that optinon from. I am simply disgreed with your statement about that trent ending.

Its also part of the reason why society has becme the way it has become. Its people like yourself jumping to other people statments as completly different opinion or values they may have.

Thats simply because of an inability to communicate properly.

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Try? Of course keep trying. The point is that these groups (not so sure about the Freemasons) are being slowly pushed to admit women. In Australia we even have womens teams officially part of the football league (they don’t play men) and feminists were demanding they get paid the same, even though far fewer people watch their games. So a non-professional football club is likely going to be under pressure to admit women, certainly if we keep going as we are. And if a contact sport like football doesn’t have an inherent rationale to be all male, there’d be precious few groups that could.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As far as male community goes, why would it matter if women are on a different team?

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What makes you think for an amateur outfit they’ll let you not have women on your team? We’ve already had a feminist politician actually say women should be allowed on men’s sport teams. This was in reaction to a comment about women in the military, but it’s been floated.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I suppose I'm just looking for opportunities where they are, and I'm not willing to accept that this is some one-way tide.

We're probably going to have to be nimble in the face of such changes, but I don't think we should assume that they're definitely going to happen.

Consider that the Queensland Netball Assocation literally made a boys-only netball team and allowed them to play in the girls' league (with some problematic outcomes, to be sure!). They were attempting to form the beginnings of a boys' netball league. This is the opposite of the trend that you're suggesting is happening.

[–]DekajaSukunda 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh I'll keep trying. I'll never give up. I completely agree male community is fundamental in solving a lot of issues. And I think in order for this to work, we need women to stay away from this.

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It happens a lot, not just sometimes. And yet women have their own groups that are completely unmolested. Indeed they’re called “empowering”.

[–]Melohdy 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, we need to start a decorative penis group.

[–]Angryasfk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As I’ve pointed out, in Australia women have been progressively pushing into the Mens Sheds. Those that chose to admit them are now called “Sheds” but they’re still part of the main Mens Shed group. And this is despite the fact that the movement was expressly set up for men’s loneliness and mental health, especially post retirement. Part of the reason why this occurs is because they won’t get government grants unless they do admit women. But women are clearly pushing in as well. How long before it’s demanded that all “sheds” that “exclude women” must open to them?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The kinds of men's groups we need should not be depending on government funding to keep going.

[–]Angryasfk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well I’d agree with that. But watch out, non-profit status may be made dependent upon allowing women in too. And even if this sort of pressure is resisted, they’ll still push if the group comes to be seen as something worthwhile.

Not trying to dissuade you. It’s best to be prepared and ready to make a stand.

[–]jarmbur 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Imagine the opposite skit being done. Men taking their women to women parks. I'm pretty sure there would be riots and protests. SNL would probably get cancelled. But it's okay since it's making fun of men because as men we can take a joke and laugh at ourselves.

[–]anonymouslionn 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup. Equating men to dogs. Or treating them as such.

Ehh, in a time without woke outrage (and feminism), I’d say this is banter and we probably could all have a laugh. But in the current state, it’s a bit offensive/condescending.

Albeit, the idea might actually be useful lol

The recent timing of both of these events seems like a form of baiting vulnerable men for attention. A lot of media has been doing this and it's one of the reasons why the credibility and seriousness of the media is no longer as much as it used to be.

[–]russlo 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My wife played this for me without fanfare after dinner, out of the blue, right after we sat on the couch. I know it's toxic to think this, but I am hurt, and I can't help but thinking "if you don't want me to talk to you when you come home, that's fine." Compare me to a dog, liken me to a child that needs a play date, tell me that the friends I want to make aren't up to your ridiculous standards, and then to top it all off, to say that me being happy she's home is causing her emotional labor? Yeah, I know, my marriage is definitely "going places."

I'm going to cancel my previously scheduled appointment with my female therapist and process this alone, because I don't want to talk to anyone right now, least of all a woman that's also married that is also probably laughing at this. I don't want to talk to our "mutual" friends right now either, because she had been hanging out with them all day and they all no doubt had a good laugh at my expense. I felt alone before, now I just feel isolated as fuck.

So many men online saying "This is a great idea!" and not even ruminating on the thought that they just got compared to dogs - they're lapping it up, while their spouses lament all of the hard work of ... checks notes ... just listening to someone.

Happy fucking Movember, everyone. Let's all just satirise male loneliness right before the loneliest time of the year, what's wrong with that?

Fuck you, SNL. All of the men that participated in this skit should be ashamed of themselves.

Reason number 1549 not to get into a committed relationship with a women. Worst case scenario prepare to be emotionally abused by her fighting and stating you can't talk to other people only to be later shamed by the same women who thinks you spend too much time with her. In the slightly better scenario have women who selfishly mock you for your loneliness seeing you as pathetic but regardless of your mental state expect you to be their therapist. If you're desperate and understand the risks go ahead and fuck them but don't ever open up to one. Get a dog, a dog is more empathetic and understanding than the modern woman could ever be and won't betray you or use your words against you. Also fuck the misandrist media, should boycott this trash.

I didn't know anyone watched SNL anymore.

SNL has always been kind of like the North Korea of comedy. The sketches aren't very funny, the guest hosts never memorize their lines and have to read them off cue cards, and there's usually ten minutes of commercials at the end before they come back and say good night. General quality is so-so, but nobody ever calls them out on it for fear of appearing "uncool".

Their attitude has always been, "its funny because we say it's funny, and if you don't think so, you're uncool." They have been gaslighting their audience for decades.

Or having friends not show because the GF argues right before said meet up, only for the guy to show his face weeks later when he realised what's happening or once they are broken up or on a break its ridiculous.

Before ppl say well get better friends I agree, I never did this and find it a shit move but can also see how and why guys feel trapped, like your partner is meant to be your best friend but still these same women go out on a Thursday for a girls night and would crucify you for complaining.

So for them to make light if this and numerous other situations just show the mind games women play regularly and its disgraceful that they don't get called out more on this nonsense.

Switch the genders around. Does it seem sexist? Then it was sexist in the first place. How hard is it for people to understand?

They think they're helping, highlighting men's "loneliness," but they're not. They are only outing themselves as not willing to be interested in their husbands' thoughts and ideas.

[–]Batbuckleyourpants 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They weren't mocking men. It is satire. The article even point it out. Using humor to make a social commentary is not mocking.

Like the best satire, there's an element of sadness and discomfort in the truth behind the jokes. When one guy (Andrew Dismukes) learns another guy (Aristotle Athari) at the man park loves Bo Burnham, he's so overcome that he immediately grabs the other guy in a hug and asks him to be his best man. It's an absurd moment in the "Man Park" sketch, but underscores how desperate so many men are to make a genuine connection with another guy that they'll latch on to even the most minor of shared interests.

[–]CrowMagpie 28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know about the sketch itself, but the article was written to say 'Men are lonely. The poor women'. See my above quote-mining, and u\pappo4ever's comment.

Ehh, that’s the most optimistic take on it

It came off as mockery/insulting/condescending. At least a bit. Considering the whole walking the dog but actually walking a man thing, and kinda portrayed us like we’re too stupid to socialize, so this is what had to be done

But yeah, from my previous comment;

Ehh, in a time without woke outrage (and feminism), I’d say this is banter and we probably could all have a laugh. But in the current state, it’s a bit offensive/condescending.

Albeit, the idea might actually be useful lol

[–]cuccurucucu-paloma 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The sketch was ok in my opinion, it highlights an important thing by making fun of it in a good way. The beautiful part in my opinion is that the partners are supportive of the men, but they are just tired out. Unfortunately many women aren't supportive of what they consider "childish" hobbies and berate their partner even for spending one night gaming with friends.

I would say that the sad virgins one was more offensive if we really want to feel offended. With all the anti-slutshaming going around i don't understand why making fun of virgins is still fair. It's tiring.

Wouldn't you say the sketch fails at satire if it doesn't incorporate this reality?

[–]cuccurucucu-paloma 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It wouldn't make sense because that kind of woman wouldn't like their partner going to the park, socializing over marvel.

You also have to understand the target of snl, who considered bill burr and the nba bubble sketch, for example, inappropriate lol I think this men's park sketch and the previous one, men's restroom were funny and not so distant from the reality of many men.

So, fixing problems that don't exist by trying to shape half the population into an image from the minds of the other half who don't actually know what they want somehow creates problems? Who would've guessed.

Maybe just let men be men, with all the similarities and differences men come with among each other? Isn't that what we're supposed to do with every other gender?

[–]JedahVoulThur 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I haven't watched the sketch, but I think humour should have no barriers, who are you? SJW that think people shouldn't make a joke about certain issues? The hypocresy! I find some cancer (the illness) jokes fun, even though I lost my mother to it, some goth jokes fun even though I am from that subculture and some feminist jokes fun even if they mock my gender. What I'm trying to say is, don't be a pussy, if the joke is good, laught at it, it doesn't matter if it "punches down" or up, or to the middle.

[–]Angryasfk 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If it’s actually funny though. Shock value in and of itself isn’t automatically funny. Otherwise racist jokes would considered the most funny no matter how derogatory or lacking in humour because today they truly are “shocking”!

Here in my left palm I have the names of all the "friends" who've done anything about my depression and loneliness.

Said palm is as empty as their lives.

I remember when SNL was actually funny, not a pile of steaming SJW shit.

Did you read the article?

[–]flatty407 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean it's a comedy show, what'd you expect?

[–]jacobmakesmovies -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Alright fellas, it’s No Nuance November, react to this with no nuance!

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the “issue” is more with the article than the sketch.

It pays to be female tribalist and anti-male in global capitalism, that's why we need Stalinist Communism.

[–]sohappyred 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's comedy, i never take this kinda thing seriously.

It's an art, so it's excluded by myself for scrutiny

Everybody wants to get offended by everything these days.

[–]Maxwell1138 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Honest question, do you not find this offensive?

Its adhoc comparing men to dogs. That is considered an insult in my book, which I find offensive. If this wouldn't be acceptable to do to women why is it acceptable to do to men?

[+]hydrosparky91 -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Dude it's a comedy sketch. I found it hilarious as a male.

[–]__pebble____ 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What do you find comical about treating men like actual dogs?

[–]Ok-Efficiency1842 28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Fuck off. This is hate speech and sexism. This shit isn't cool. Especially on a mainstream TV show but society will defend it because hating men is socially acceptable.

[–]Ok_Research219 37 points38 points39 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Women would lose their crap over something as simple as the phrase, “ Get back to the kitchen.” SNL should do a sketch from an episode of the Honeymooners and see how well that goes.

[+]EnvironmentalWar4627 -10 points-9 points-8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You think 'men have trouble making friends' is the same as 'women belong in the kitchen'.

Really???

You seem very unable to formulate a logical comparison here like you just want to be offended but don't even know why.

[–]Legitimate-Ad-6267 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Men aren't capable of forming bonds themselves. Like bricks, they'll sit there on the ground until a woman builds a house with them."

"Make me sandwich lol"

[–]Hamilton_Brad 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sexist yeah, but not hate speech.

[–]rom_sk -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Sometimes humor is sexist (meaning: gross generalizations are made about a group based upon their sex/gender for affect). If this really bothers you, you may be a bit too easily offended -- and you should probably avoid listening to some of the funniest comedians working today (Bill Burr, Louis CK, Dave Chappelle, etc.)

Y’all are all bent out of shape over a fucking South Park skit. This sub used to be about resources, uplifting men, movements. Now it’s just incessant bitching from those with external loci of control

sketch lacks nuance or any critical understanding of the complex issue that is the growth in male loneliness.

[–]No-Feedback7437 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

SNL is not funny just stupid my loneliness is because I am trying to protect myself against mindless idiots who try to use me for sadistic purposes

[–]WatercressCreative33 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did you see the music video "3 sad virgins" and how they literally joke about them dying alone? How is that not toxic masculinity? They would literally NEVER make a music video joking about lonely women and them dying alone

[–]Casanova-Quinn 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ironically, if these "Man Parks" existed and were popular, eventually women would complain about them too, just like any another existing "male space". Women are simultaneously creating the problem and criticizing the solution. The only way for men to get out of this paradox is to grow some balls and say "No, this is our space". Women have no problem doing this for themselves, for example some gyms have "women only" areas, or entire gyms (Curves). If women can say "no", so can men.

[–]Redddithatesfreedom -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Parody isn't mockery, just FYI. I thought it was hilarious and a totally accurate way of how me, a guy in a long term relationship who struggles making new friends, gets stuck in the house earning money and doesn't have many good outlets for social interaction.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you appreciate being represented as a dog or small child who needs female supervision to make friends?

[+]AlienAmerican1 -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love at the end, "Women get in free", I don't think is as much a "man bash" as it might come off at first.
