This shit makes me not want to date.

[–]Itsknowntohappen 186 points187 points188 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I had an ex tell me he’d kill me if I ever left him. We weren’t even fighting, it just casually came up getting ready for work when I was in the bathroom putting on my makeup and he was tying his tie.

He ended up cheating with a woman he worked with and I remember thinking, that was my exit. I got lucky, she was his distraction so I could get away.

This is awful, but I sometimes think getting cruelly discarded by these psychos is the lesser of two evils. If they make the decision to leave you on 'their' terms, they're less likely to straight up murder you.

[–]TheKarenFromHell 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It happened to me. Abusive and escalating ex got bored of trying to subjugate me and moved on. At the time it was devastating—“That piece of shit thought HE was too good for ME?!”—but now I am so glad that’s how it went down.

That shit terrifies me.

A lot of men fall into two categories: (1) the ones that send mixed signals, breadcrumb, imagine that they're settling for you🤡

And (2) the possessive ones who text constantly, monitor your friends, and use reproductive coercion.

I'm so happy you got away. He would've kept true to his word. You dodged a bullet, literally.

My best friend ran into this situation. The guy straight up told her “I’ll kill you and your kids.” She was spellbound. I spent nearly a year supporting, listening, and safety planning. I began to have nightmares about him. The DV people told me I was getting secondary trauma. I began to accept the fact that I might be one of those people whose friend gets murdered. Eventually she got out, and we got her armed up. This happens to women. It’s real.

This is another reason why we CANNOT be in a car with a man we don’t know. Do not allow a man to pick you up for a date. This is also why we do NOT let men we don’t know or partners who haven’t earned our trust into our homes or know where we live.

This is horrifying! When are we going to admit loud and clear that the biggest perpetrators of violence and murder against women are men?

[–]HostileovariesFDS Apprentice 215 points216 points217 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why don't women leave abusive relationships? Because the sad reality is that's when she's most likely to be killed and just like in this case, not just immediately afterwards but years afterwards.

75% of domestic violence related homicides occur upon separation and there is a 75% increase of violence upon separation for at least two years. Link

Vetting is not just for your mental well being but safety as well.

I survived an attempted ending and 2 years of stalking afterwards because the courts didn't even give him jail time because his slimy lawyer argued a kink defense. Nor did the police do anything about that psychopath stalking me afterwards, despite him sending pics of the outside of my home at 3 am, including a picture he took of my dog with threats to end her while I was at work, pics of my truck outside of my new workplace, all sent via his alt accounts from his IP address. He was so unhinged, he got my name tattooed on him (large and took up his entire forearm) after the breakup. Apparently that and the CCTV footage of him creeping around outside was not enough for the cops to step in, since he was not "technically" on my property, but on the sidewalk, which is public.

It took my (now) husband and his 4 older brothers staking out my property to scare this dangerous scrote off of me. I'm thankful I was unofficially adopted by his family, or I most likely wouldn't be here typing this out today. Most women don't have the luxury of such a support network.

The justice system, the police, and sometimes not even our own family, are not on our side. Any fan of true crime sees the pattern of ignored dv history and all the red flags that come with it, and they wait for a body to turn up before they take it seriously. Don't be another statistic. Vet and run at the first red flag.

I have some exes that I'm still looking over my shoulder. I bet there's a lot of women here that can say the same.

My great great grandmother was murdered by her husband while their 3 young children watched. He stabbed her to death!! She had left him and he was mad about her not taking him back. So enraging, so sad, and just so tragic. My maternal line has felt the ripples of that trauma for generations. I'm finally the one to break the cycle of abuse. All because some fking scrote couldn't take no for an answer.

[–]BusinessTwistofLimeFDS Newbie 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Congratulations on helping heal the intergenerational trauma your family experienced. It isn't easy, and it takes a lot of courage to undo those patterns. I hope you celebrate yourself and the work you're doing.

Hugs to you. You're making a difference in the world.

Part of me feels like things like “vetting is a must” are another form of victim blaming. Yes, vet and be vigilant. However I’ve read so many stories that show how some abusers are smart enough to not drop the mask for years. Then it’s like boom this man has a secret life/family.

It’s exhausting and just feels like no matter what women do to protect themselves we still get blamed for not doing enough research.

[–]saragc92FDS Newbie[S] 102 points103 points104 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I’m sorry, I don’t like victim shaming, and didn’t mean for it to come off in that matter.

It’s very sad that women die because the moment we let out guard down something could happen to us,

By simply trusting in a person who’s supposed to love us.

[–]dee_isabirdFDS Newbie 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No need to apologize! I feel like you didn’t have that intention, but it reminded me of how with lots of stories people kind of insinuate she “had to have known”.

I agree it’s sad and really scary.

[–]extragoudaFDS Newbie 94 points95 points96 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I have an ex who hid behind a mask for 10 years. When he finally dropped the mask, I was shocked and horrified. It was like watching his face peel off, I had never seen the expression behind his mask before. It just looked like... pure evil. I can't even explain it. I had never seen him make such an evil expression before.

And I did vet him. I was eventually pressured into giving him a chance by everyone: my friends, my family, his friends, his family, and society in general. I had doubts, but then I brushed them aside because he seemed "normal".

He was anything but normal.

[–]fogplumFDS Newbie 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What were your doubts?

[–]extragoudaFDS Newbie 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

3rd date he decided I was "the one". Umm, no, I don't know you that well. But my married friends were like: but that's so ROmAnTIc!

I was one of the last ones not married or without a boyfriend, and I was really getting ahead in my career. Getting into a relationship with him derailed everything I worked for.

Now I know that this guy was trying to love-bomb me and he was a narcissist.

[–]drowsypillowprincessFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I had someone once drop the mask too. It changed me, to see that horror and know I had loved a lie.

Fault isn't a zero sum game. You should take precautions against predators because it's in your best interest to do so, doesn't mean the predators are any less to blame if they hurt you.

In our culture it's more acceptable to fear bear and shark attacks than intimate partner violence, even though the latter is far more common.

[–]godherselfhasenemiesFDS Newbie 88 points89 points90 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"that guy played with my kids for gods sake"

So many acquaintances from my marriage let my abusive ex around their children, despite knowing full well he was repeatedly physically abusive. It's chilling. Took away a lot of my faith in humanity tbh.

[–]rustedchains- 30 points31 points32 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Happens too often. Since men won't get any less violent, women need to take extreme measures to make sure they don't end up with a psychopath.

[–]LonlinessandtittiesFDS Newbie 87 points88 points89 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I worry that sometimes the attacks against this sub come from posts like this. The title comes off somewhat callous.

While it's the goal here to teach each other why it's important to be careful and vet ruthlessly, we also need to acknowledge that what we're learning from one another here isn't exactly how we were socialized. We were taught to give men a million chances. We were taught that if we are good enough women he will become a good man. And let's not forget all the women who were raised in abusive situations and think that less than what should be the bare minimum is what they know as normal.

Two people died here due to male hubris. I agree this should serve as a warning to us all. I want to be careful and make sure we are respectful and understanding of all of the societal pressures that lead many women to accept abusive behaviors. There's a difference between a "pick me" and an abused woman. I just want to be sure we have massive amounts of sympathy for the latter. Many of us likely fall into that category, turned into a pick me to solve it, got therapy, and here we are. But for our sisters who didn't (or weren't able to) fight their way out of it, we should mourn them, rather than shame or hate them.

[–]HhjjuuyFDS Apprentice 49 points50 points51 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The attacks against this sub would be in support of the insinuated victim-blaming of the title as blaming women for men's gendered violence is part and parcel to the acceptance of that violence under patriarchy. The attacks against this sub are not anti-thetical to patriarchy.

If anything I think OP used this title due to being generally unable to call this crime what it is, as you did - male hubris. And part of being unable to do so is that this sub is (externally) held to the ridiculous standard of having to avoid "reverse sexism."

[–]LonlinessandtittiesFDS Newbie 30 points31 points32 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Facts ma'am. I'm definitely glad OP posted this. And I appreciate what you said here. It is so insane that we are often called every version of "man hater" for telling each other truths in order to protect each other. Loving and protecting other women is not misandry.

[–]HostileovariesFDS Apprentice 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree. In no way do I blame anyone for their abuse. But I think as women we're conditioned to be nice even when we're terrified. And even from a young age we're taught that bullying and abuse = love, "He just teases you because he likes you". If another boy gropes you, "boys will be boys". And even instances of sexual assault and rape have been criminally under punished because it would destroy the rapist's life.

How is it a mystery that in a society that raises women this way can get into abusive relationships without seeing the red flags of it? The fault lies with society, not only for conditioning to believe these things but also for telling men these behaviors are okay and even if they do them they statistically won't face long-term consequences.

[–]fds_throwaway_4_uFDS Newbie 75 points76 points77 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Vetting is a must indeed. We cannot afford to let the wrong men into our lives. That’s how you end up as a murder statistic.

[–]xpressurself111FDS Newbie 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This happened to my best friends childhood best friend. She began dating another man and her ex shot both of them and then shot himself.

I have no words. Knee jerk says, “No more significant others while I’m with my friends,” but that feels isolating, I feel lost, too.

What a monster.

[–]thewetdog_Ruthless Strategist 28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How do you vet for murder?

Aside from having kil led someone before or having beat them.

Kil ling or harming animals. Okay. What else?

This one is failure of the system not of the woman.

[–]Reasonable-Slice-827 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Strangulation actually is a huge sign because it's a direct way to kill someone (as opposed to beating). I had an ex try to strangle me in my sleep. I told people and he was pissed. He wasn't physically violent towards me again until 4years later when he tried to kill me. Telling people what happened and getting medical documentation, and staying permanently away from the abuser is the best plan. Anyone who's ever read Lundy Bancroft knows abuser rehab makes these pieces of trash better at being abusive.

[–]thewetdog_Ruthless Strategist 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’ve read about this. This is a “good” one, thanks!

[–]senselessdrone 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

From the age of 20-22, I was in a toxic relationship that nearly ended in murder (poisoning)/murder-suicide (vehicular violence), so I became really interested in reading the red flags for people/situations that could become violent or lethal. Here's a recently published article that goes over some of the warning signs that a partner has the capacity to kill:

https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/signs-an-abusive-partner-may-kill-you

[–]katiekat0214FDS Newbie 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I swear, copies of Lundy Bancroft's book should just be straight up given to women.

Hear me out here: in my opinion, stalking and even death can be mostly prevented. How? Because all abuse starts with words alone. It always starts with pushing boundaries; it progresses to physical violence, rape, murder. The sooner a woman stands up, pushes back, exerts her own power, control, and dominance over her own life, her body, her boundaries, that's the moment a scrote backs down and backs off. And it works extremely well the earlier it's done.

The longer it's allowed to go on, the more brazen, the more physical, the more abusive a scrote gets, and if you push abuse to its limits, death is the outcome. Teaching young girls and women to stand up is crucial. Teaching them about how most men operate from dominance, hierarchy, and power is crucial. Teaching them to push back, walk away, and realize there are plenty of men out there, that they never have to settle, is crucial.

[–]leekykeeksFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Things men NEVER have to worry about. A breakup could mean a death sentence with the wrong one.

[–]East-Willingness513FDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is why I would never date a man if I was no longer with my husband for whatever reason. I would exclusively date women or be alone. It’s not worth risking my kids in such close proximity to potential pedo’s or sociopaths which many men are.
