Missing from this is the actual meat of study analysis that found that women were more likely to message men they deemed 'less' attractive. Whereas men found more women attractive but were most likely to only message those they deemed 'most' attractive. So women (in this particular study) weren't necessarily like 'wow, he's hot' but would message anyway whereas men (in this particular study) seemed to be like 'yeah she's hot but I'm only going to message the ones I think are super hot'. Either way, it's not quite as clear cut as many people make it sound.

I mean, right off the bat, would love to see the actual methodology of the study, how the data was gathered, what demographic info they have for that data, how they filtered out bad faith responses, and what the overall sample sizes were.

Before I even bothered to give any of this any credence.

Also, I'd hazard a guess that this wasn't specified to be purely about physical attractiveness, but overall attractiveness, which includes things like socioeconomic status for some, and personality for most.

EDIT: Also, let's turn that around. Tell us a bit about you and what you think about this data and why you felt the desire to ask this question?

I don't think anything of it tbh. It's ONE sample from OK CUPID. Not controlled, double blinded, or purposely constructed in any way beyond the company's profit incentives. Remember, companies don't do anything without a profit motive.

I'm not saying it's necessarily "wrong", simply that it's inconclusive and or far less relevant than people make out. For example, if this is about rating outward attraction on first meeting then fine, it's highly relevant for app based dating. Not so relevant for IRL interactions where people often get together without outward attraction being a deciding factor on both sides (e.g. hobbies, friends, chance encounters).

I’m honestly convinced most men don’t know how to advertise themselves to women online or know how to take a good pic. Also, there’s more men then women on apps so there’s that as well.

Probably misrepresented or lacking context, don't care either way.

The problem with stuff like this is black pill / incel types get all OMG ONLY LIKE 10% OF MEN HAVE ANY CHANCE AT ALL and like, get out into the real world and look around you. That's just absolutely not true. In every community I have ever been in, from friends to family to skateboarding / punk communities to game dev communites to you name it... most dudes I know date and have decent relationships from time to time, and probably at least half or more of them are in decent relationships at any given moment.

There is something to keep in mind:

-The majority within dating apps are male and it has been found that when there is a demographic difference between the sexes, the sex that is less abundant is more demanding of the sex that is more numerous.

-According to the same data from that app, women in their twenties were the most attractive and men did not change their preference with age.

-Less than 30% of the population has ever used a dating app. And far fewer people actively use them for flirting, some use them to boost self-esteem or just hang out.

-I don't have the exact study, but on this sub a few months ago there was a discussion about one that said there was a significant difference between pictures and seeing someone face to face, the attractiveness rating was higher in a face to face contact.

Edit: I think it's a bit repetitive. This information has already been discussed often. It's also often argued that people are now contacting each other more online, but dating apps don't have a monopoly on the internet. I met the last man I liked on Twitter. 🤷

I have no idea where this data came from or if there’s anything relevant about it. But, it we’re assuming this data is legit, this is what I would say (anecdotally).

Men (again, this is in my personal experience) tend to put WAY less effort into their dating profiles. A lot of them have grainy pictures taken at bad angels, pictures of just their abs, or random pictures of cartoon characters or their dog. A lot of them don’t have real descriptions, either, and are more to the tune of: “If you’re interested in learning about me, shoot me a message.” So the combination of a bad profile picture + a bad or essentially nonexistent description is probably likely to get voted as “less attractive.”

I am bisexual, so I also see a lot of women’s profiles, and the number of profiles of women that are like what I described above is very, very, small by comparison. Women (in general) are more likely to know what their angles are for photos, or know how to use a filter to enhance their image. They tend to be better at cultivating and projecting a certain image.

I think polls like this are bad for business. Its essentially telling men not to bother with their platform unless they're extremely good looking and at that point if youre an extremely good looking man you would think of online dating as a waste of your time.

Couple of points. First, those results were from a time when men who were ‘top rated’ by women were notified of the rating, and a lot of women wanted to browse anonymously so their middle rating was actually middle and top.

Second, the men who post these graphs never post the part of the same study showing that men message the top-tier women almost exclusively, whereas women disproportionately message middle-tier men.

IMHO, I believe women see a lot more ‘context’ than men do and it’s that context that we use primarily to determine attractiveness. The male gaze vs the female gaze. So, the way this would work is that if you give a man a close-up picture of a nice set of breasts, he will rate that ‘body’ reasonably similarly to what he would rate the breasts if he saw them on an actual woman. I don’t believe women operate in the same way in this regard. If women’s ‘equation’ for attractiveness requires more factors than men’s, then it makes sense that when we are only given part of that equation (a disembodied picture), we will rank most men as below average. If the ‘context’ is half of the equation, then the best a guy can do online is 50%. Context is going to be things like how a man carries himself, eye contact, body language, word choice, need for attention, and a million other tiny cues that cannot be got from a profile photo. Dating apps are set up for the male gaze--for how men perceive things, not for how women perceive attractiveness or how our equations are set up.

men are just like female birds, its fine. in my experience (as a bi AFAB nonbinary person) women just care way less about looks and more about other factors. i find women just unbelievavly gorgeous and am rarely visually attracted to men. am still happy with my male partner. he's my little brown feathered bb -- doesn't mean i don't appreciate the bright plumage of females.

Think about fellas! Most the men online out number woman 2to1 that is 50 perfect. That is high. Most men hit up the 6-10 range. Considering that there are no tents maybe a few nines some eights so what's left out of the sixes and sevens in some eights are swarmed by a large percentage of men which means that on average these women are getting probably 30 to anywhere 50 messages a day we don't stand a chance. Not a freaking chance. Who are these women going to go for if they get 50 messages they're going to message the five hottest guys. Most guys who really look good aren't on online dating because they don't need to be. It's a lose-lose. You pay money to swipe through hundreds of pictures read profile send messages with a very very small return on your investment. I consider myself to be average to maybe a little above average on looks and I get very little messages and the ones that I do message rarely turn into dates. If you want a hot looking girl, a decent woman who looks good and is going to treat you right you're going to have to make a little investment but I suggest you go overseas to the east Asia my friend most beautiful women in the world insanely loyal and faithful. You will spend the same amount of money going to Asia a few times and having her come here than you would on a woman in the us on dates and other stuff you just might have to wait for the pussy. However you're going to have a good girl who's got his very low body count maybe if she's in her 30s or 40s she probably hasn't slept with more than three guys in their entire life that's a guarantee
