To be too serious and bring down the mood... Naw. I've seen/seeing my aunt's etc working through the end with their partners. Parkinson's, dementia, cancer etc. Men tend to die a little younger and there's a age gap of a few years so it happens this way more. Sucks for everyone involved.

Go talk to anyone working in hospitals, it's always women sticking with terminally ill men to the end, their wives, mothers, daughters, etc. Meanwhile a lot of nurses are taught to prepare women diagnosed with cancer to the possibility of a breakup/divorce because the rates of men leaving their terminally ill wives are very high

It's a tricky one to me. I mean my experience is that after a relationship is established it can go both ways (e.g. both men and women may leave or stay), but the kicker is that before that point I've only ever experienced women bailing at the slightest hint that things may not be perfect. Like to the extent that for guys suffering illness or disability the most common advice is always to never reveal it, or if that's not possible, to downplay any impact.

As a guy with a serious illness that's certainly what I've been told, and even leaving aside the much more common getting abused for how it affects my appearance, the few times I have revealed it the reactions have been universally negative - often offensive and outright hateful (e.g. being told that I'm undateable because I may get sick again in the future, to a woman literally making shit up about my illness to try and justify lying to me).

As much as I find this to be entertaining, I can't help but think about the jam sebastian situation whenever this topic comes up. Every time I see pictures before his passing, I get sent straight into depression. It was very sad to see images of the couple. I really feel for his girlfriend, and she truly was the one for him. Actually a unicorn. My day has been ruined, and now I'm going back to bed.
