I recently went on a date with a woman that was studying to be a lawyer and was really into the idea of "social justice." She said something that implied men weren't victims of domestic violence and abuse. I asked her about it and the cognitive dissonance was palpable. She thought I was making stuff up and never considered the idea of looking up the statistics.

A guy I work with was just a juror in a court case where the defendant's wife and daughter were accusing him of domestic violence, but this guy came in with bruises and a black eye. The women were fine. Luckily the jury didn't find him guilty.

Another coworker's father in law was arrested because HE had a black eye, given to him by his unprovoked wife.

I was very upset by my date's distorted view of the world, especially as someone who was emotional abused by an ex.

We never spoke after that date. It's too bad because we were having a really nice time until that part of the conversation.

Feminist are always up in arms over the 1in 5 homeless are women statistic when it is painfully obvious that men must make out the other 4. And regarding the domestic abuse someone posted a video on ppd a couple of days back where they said women hit more but men do more damage. It was a video where they posted a man being abusive towards a girlfriend while they sat on a park bench and people lost their shit. But when they reversed the roles and the woman was being the aggressor (as you've all seen a thousand times before) people just ignored it and a couple of ladies actually cheered for the lady (both paid actors in a social experiment) as she repeated berated, hit and slapped her boyfriend. Only one person tried to intervene to stop the abusive woman. As I mentioned in the post, be the change you want to see.

I, uh... Okay, I don't exactly know how to phrase this, but here's my best go at it.

I'm not calling the statistics under dispute, nor their significance. That's totally valid.

However, I feel like the way that they are presented here is disingenuous.

A very, very large percentage of these statistics are being influenced by subcultures, particularly young, inner-city kids (Often black, often not) who have the roughest lives, the worst prospects when facing our legal system, and the most toxic cultures.

I have nothing against fighting for equality - that's something that I (as a straight white dude) would like to see too.

However, there are a lot of blokes, many of them in the same category as myself, who will see these statistics and use them to reinforce the notion that, as a straight white dude, they're being oppressed.

Isn't this the opposite of what we should be doing to try and move towards equality?

Shouldn't, instead, we be looking at our own culture and saying, "Hey. Why are we constantly reinforcing this notion of machismo? Why exactly is it that being gay, or showing emotion, is a bad thing?"

That's the awareness that we need to be spreading, isn't it? That you can be a man without having to fit an outdated notion of what is "manly"? That a lot of the problems that lead the statistics above come from within our own subculture, not purely because men's rights are being oppressed?

Moving to an equilibrium requires a push and pull. So a voice has to be heard from many places for a proper middle ground to be met. For many years white men in America had way too much privelege, especially when looking around 50 or more years ago. Times have changed and although things aren't perfectly equal, they are pretty dam close. In my opinion men are starting to be targeted. It's hard to describe in words but I'm a 24 year old white skinned guy and that's how I feel. Although I am half Costa Rican, I appear white. I have seen both sides of the spectrum from the majority white, to the minority. I feel as if my skin color has kind of put me in a "cultural debt", like I owe people something for my ancestory. What did I ever do to anyone? I have struggled the same way as minorities struggle all the time, I mean my mom came to this country illegally for God's sake. I just want everyone to be treated as individuals, I am tired of being bumped into a category of people that I have practically no association with.

So... Here's my question: How much of your discrimination do you feel has come from the perception of you as being male, and how much from the perception of being young?

I've got some very bad medical issues. (which are rare, and not something like cancer, which everybody has been trained to treat with respect.)

The amount of discrimination that I've gotten, especially from doctors who I'm supposedly paying to try and fix this, is disgusting. I appear healthy externally, therefore must be healthy despite all evidence to the contrary. I'm young, so clearly I'm lazy and therefore just making it all up.

(This happens to young women too, almost to a worse degree; everything turns into a pregnancy. I have a friend who was an hour away from having a burst appendix because all the nurses decided she must have just spread her legs, so the ER doctor can see the "real" (read: old) patients and get around to her later.)

Do you think some of what you get might be because of that, and you're misattributing it to another issue? If not, that's totally fine, I'm just curious to see what you think of that angle.

There is nothing disingenuous in a straight presentation of facts, as done here.

A blatant interpretation of the facts, without a shred of support, in such a way as to support your own thesis, now thats disingenuous.

" Obviously this is done; you just did it yourself. Only difference is your conclusion. Are you actually saying that despite these facts men are not oppressed in the legal system? Look through the studies and you'll see that they account for potential bias.

I believe OP is indeed pointing out the lack of progress towards equality from the male's perspective. And that one way to move towards equality is for more people to be aware of and recognize the facts that he's posted. His stated point is that this is something to remember.

You just broke down the societal experience into subcultures to make a point. Which particular culture or subculture are you referencing when you say "our own culture"? Further it's absolutely disingenuous of you to assume and advance that the one subculture you're talking about is shared by all. And just who is "we", who has reinforced a culture of machismo (because machismo would advance shutting up about the disparity in the first place), and why are you talking about being gay and crying?

The assumptions you're making are so very broad it's difficult to answer you. What's this outdated notion of "manly"? Who says it's outdated, and why? Aren't you actually victim blaming when you say the problems are caused by the men facing these disproportionate statistics?

I rarely participate in this sub, but I browse it often enough. I love seeing entitled people get their just deserts, women and men included. This sub just happens to specialize on the women.

When I do read the comments I find they (normally) aren’t anywhere near as bad as typical hate subs. There are definitely some that jump out as those types, but generally I see them get downvoted. I actually see a lot of comments complaining “This isn’t PPD this just being mean/something bad happening to a girl” or things like that pretty regularly.

Regardless, I don’t think it qualifies as a circle jerk considering you and the top level commenter haven’t been removed yet. It’s not a safe space sub that removes opposing viewpoints like every other fucking sub.

Unlike the top level commenter you added nothing constructive to the conversation. He added to the conversation, you created animosity and divisiveness. If your goal is to change people’s minds you might want to find a better approach.

Regardless of the top comment the vast majority of participation in this sub is toxic and I've been downvotes to shit for pointing it out more than once.

It's a circlejerk because a lot of the community is here to support others and be supported in their vitriolic ideology.

What I added to the conversation was notice of the irony in guys being considerate of a group of people that they usually diminish simply because it fits their narrative in this context, furthering my point about how this sub is a circlejerk.

I'm not here to change anyone's mind, hateful users in this sub are surely operating in a mental ecosystem of other cynical, warped perspectives of reality that serve to justify their toxicity more than I could refute. I'm here to add a little commentary contrary to the narrative because I'm on Reddit and I can.

One of the major points brought up when talking about men's problems is that men are more likely to get assaulted, they are more likely to get killed, etc. And this is of course true. But who commits these crimes? Other men.

This point just doesn't make sense to me. Other men do not encourage suicide, it's a societal issue relating to toxic masculinity coming from all sides.

Those homeless people are not made homeless by other men, there's a variety of causes and the same applies for women, the main cause of this high percentage of homeless is the distinct lack of support infrastructure put in place for homeless men whereas a metaphorical carpet is thrown under women.

The homicide victims statistic comes from the fact that men are often considered disposable and is likely caused by expectations from society (both men and women). Sure, the people who are doing the killing are likely men, perhaps if they weren't forced to go out and be the 'breadwinner' then less men might turn to crime to do so and more women might as it's seen as less masculine.
As far as the domestic abuse statistic is concerned the main aim is to let people know how very widespread this issue is as currently if you were to ask someone the percentage of male victims of domestic abuse you'd get guesses of around 2-7% whereas it sits at 40%. The point of this is not trying to compete in any way with female domestic abuse but instead raise awareness of domestic abuse for both genders and show just how common it is, no matter the gender.

I've already covered the violent crime statistic causes.
Now onto the particularly concering part. Previously is was all he say she say to a degree where there are more unknown factors however with the last two statistics we can easily compare the statistical differences between the way the two genders are being treated despite being jailed for the same crime and I think this is the perfect statistic to use as an example of mens issues.

The only problem in OP's post that shows the oppession of men is the last one. The other problems have nothing to do with women. At the same time, if you look into women's problems, you'll see that most stems from the fact that men are superior to women in our society.

I don't see how men are superior in todays western society. Especially with modern feminism and many companies bending over backwards for less qualified women due to gender quotas being set.
I don't understand your line of reasoning as far as the problems in OPs post not having anything to do with women. I think it has a lot to do with women, especially feminists. Not necessarily in a malicious way but more of a 'they forgot about us' way as many feminists are vehemently against mens rights and seem to believe that all men 'oppress' women and are purposely causing issues whilst refusing to even consider any issues men are facing. Just look at all the occasions where mens rights activists have been attacked for simply trying to discuss their issues. I'm in no way trying to overshadow womens issues as there are major issues but instead show that there are issues for both sides which we must all come together to overcome. I am very much against the term 'feminism' and I hope 'meninism' never picks up as a term because these terms are very polarising and I personally think we should just have a peoples rights movement as currently it's very adversial.

I'm aware my post has turned into a wall of text but if I had to summarise it would be that both genders have issues that remain due to many generations of toxic mindsets that harmed both genders in their own ways and we should all work together. I personally come here for entitled people getting shit on and I'll be the first to admit that there have been some posts that simply don't qualify as this and as such I normally just downvote them and move on so please try not to label people here.

I'd love to have further discussion with you as I think it's rare to have an open discussion about things without getting personally offended and I kinda miss the opportunity to do so.

You seem to have a very flawed image of what feminism is. If you think that women are less capable and are more biologically suited to make less money, then sure but at least stand for your opinion. Say that the next time you meet a girl "Hey, I'm a male so I'm biologically more suited to make more money than you do."

And I'm not talking about the wage gap when you take profession and experience in consideration. I'm talking about the wage gap between the average woman and the average man. Why do women make less money? Because they pick jobs that pay less. And why do they do that? THAT is the essence of feminism. Trying to answer that question. I don't give a fuck about each individual. Individual cases can always be explain. What cannot be explained is how women systematically choose professions that pay less. One explanation could be that they are biologically more suited to make less money - it's a shitty one but it is an explanation.

Or maybe, it's because women are pushed into those professions? Maybe it's because men hire men? Maybe it's because women are less likely to be hired when they're in their 20s because employers expect them to soon get pregnant? Maybe it's because when a child is born, the woman usually goes down in work time (at least here in Sweden) to 70-80%.

Maybe there is a structural problem when almost all sexual crimes are conducted by men. Maybe there is a structural problem when women can't go home by themselves without being afraid. Maybe there is a fucking structural problem when Angela fucking Merkel gets groped during EU meetings?

Gender equality goes way beyond laws. If you can stand up and say that you think the world is equal and that men face the same problems as women, you're a fucked up person and you should really go outside every once in a while.

Now your response is too long for me to answer on my phone which I use, thought I do admire your passion. I was talking mail about the west you see, I know there many countries in the Middle East, in Asia and in Africa and even in South America that have poor female rights, but I cannot not say we have legal equality in the west because the rest of the world is still lagging behind, and yes your right we shouldn't just stand by but we cannot force countries into doing what we what, we'd be as bad as them, as in my opinion, there is no "right" opinion as who is there to say I'm right. Now in the west there are some laws which on the surface look sexist but are accualy trying to help or where, such as the system which favours women in divorce laws over custody of the child, women are far more likely to get the child which can cause mental problems in the child just like if the child lived with the father but instead dog it being 50/50 it's more like 75/25.

May I ask how does gender equality go beyond law? Without law women would be oppressed by strong primates who happen to be men, some men will be oppressed by other men. Law gives clear instruction to people how to behave, and I found think treating people equal like the equality acts in the UK have allowed us all to be legal equal then I don't know how biased you what the system to be. You do realise there is no other way of a icing equality without forcing people into submission right? Would you like it if I forced women to work as prison officers? No you wouldn't because eyou what the choice, and you have it under the equal law we have, you can do anything you what a man can do, at least legally, we don't care if your physically unable to do something or physiological as that is not inaquality, that's just life and we all have to live with it.

Have you missed the metoo campaign? I have never been sexually harassed simply because I'm born male. And ofc there are men who have been, I'm not saying that problem doesn't exist but almost all of my female friends have experienced sexual harassment. Most more than once.

Just that simple thing. That women can't go through life without getting groped. They can't go out to party without risking being groped. It exists in all fields and on all levels.

And it's illegal, sure. But how well is that taking care of the problem? Men aren't thinking "Oh, this is illegal so I won't do it".

So yes, the laws are equal for both genders, I agree. But there exists a systematic view on women as less worth than men. In some areas, like the ones you mentioned, the men are at a disadvantage. But if you take everything into consideration - there are sooooo many more areas where women are at a disadvantage. So we need to focus more on fixing this. Not ONLY focusing on this. But focus more as there are more problem.

And I'm not talking about forcing women into jobs. I'm talking about not actively discouraging women to go into certain jobs.

There are so many gender related problems and to just dismiss them all because you're a man and never had to deal with them is not okay in my opinion. You got to be humble because you are not the one to tell all the women of the world that their experiences are irrelevant.

If a women is discuraged from going and doing a job and she does, then it's her fault, she is not banned from doing that job, we can't all be kind and soft to each other, people will be people, I've been discuraged from jobs, thinking I wasn't smart enough, my "friends" said I shouldn't try because I wouldn't make into my dream job. Is it there fault or mine? MINE.

I am a man of science and maths, I truly go out of my way and look at UK statistics of any possible gender or other forms of discrimination, if you link a reliable source that proves women are being discriminated legal, not socially (as that has no true bearing on the outcome) then I will change my opinion that women in the UK, not in countries like Iran where they have real problems, are some how disadvantaged.

This is the best you can ask of any person online and in person with a different opinion, so take it or leave it. This is my final comment unless you provide some evidence to back up your claims.

If you want to ignore the future that's fine. But I think you need to at least take the past into consideration. There was a time where women could not vote nor work and were basically only housewives. Being a full time parent is also a lot of work, and I don't see any obstacles to being a single dad. I think there isn't more because change takes time. I have noticed there are a lot more housewives in America and that it is one of the few western countries that doesn't give parental benefits. So someone usually has to stay at home to take care of the kids, and considering men usually get higher wages than the women despite the same job, it makes sense that they decide to stay at home.

But yes I do agree if we want equality, we should celebrate men's day and men, just as much as we do women. It is a team effort, and just because women have been suppressed or lacked opportunity before, doesn't mean that we should dismiss the many great men who have made a difference throughout the times and now. :)

Ok. So let me just break this down for you so you can see why ypu got the reaction you did.

A post was made that IN NO WAY detracted from women, threatened, insulted or demeaned them. It purely was made as a source of info for any of our subscribers (who are most probably mostly male) to talk about a subject that gets ignored or that they may be going through and are not comfortable talking about because it isn't "manly".

Then you come in, guns blazing with a "fuck you cunts" tone and start trying to make it all about WOMEN. The exact opposite purpose of the post.

Anyone here who talks about hating women or wanting to hurt / kill them is either a troll or an incel. Neither are welcome here and get counter trolled mercilessly.

We have mothers and sisters and daughters and wives and girlfriends. We have never hated women, we hate inequality and being constantly portrayed as the villains for wanting it.

What do you expect us to do when we are called misogynists for even declaring that we're MRAs? Of course a lot of posts are going to be about disdain for feminism, people get told to be a supporter of it from the get go without any thinking involved. Of course there's going to be posts about men getting shit on because it's part of raising awareness. It might not happen to you but it's happened to other men and it should be addressed.

The top posts are:

Talking about safe spaces. How you should be protected from physical harm but not be protected from the thoughts of others (at least that's how I interpreted it on a quick read.)
A post about a woman who gave someone shit about being a manspreader in recovery, despite it being possible the guy suffers from either epilepsy or tourettes.
A picture of awareness about women being 1 in 4 of the homeless population and how that itself was a major issue (what about the other 3?).
Judge Judy post.
A tweet from a woman assuming men care about what they wear when in reality we don't give a damn. Wear whatever you want.
A complaint from a woman who only gets to see her child 50% of the time, and how awful that is for her. It's a little ironic, I think. (I still don't have a good grasp of irony).
A post raising awareness about a teacher who excludes children from playing with lego on the basis of the gender in the name of equality.
A post about how women are treated differently when it comes to statutory rape. A man is an evil rapist when he has sex with a girl and that's reflected in the news articles however when a woman does it, she was the one that was seduced by a child. (Imagine a man saying "THAT THIRTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL SEDUCED ME!").
False rape accusation.
Abusive women not recognising they're abusers. Mainly due to the fact women are considered weaker and unable to actually harm men.

Those are the top 10 from /r/MensRights, admittedly all within the last year. The next 15 posts are about more false accusations, topics on equality, reversed stories, violence against men, etc. I carried on going through the top 100 and didn't find any revenge porn unless we have a different definition of revenge porn (I just assume revenge porn is what the news says it is, you know, showing photos of an ex partner as revenge. If that's not what you meant then apologies.)

Now, some of the posts are a little bit on the shitposting side, but they're still done to raise some sort of awareness to issues of discrimination that men face. It's not about lessening the issues women face but raising as much awareness as possible that women aren't the only people that have problems in society and that we can't focus primarily on one gender if we actually want equality. It's like a see-saw in my mind. If you focus too much on one side and forget the other, it'll become unbalanced.

It's very easy to talk about. It's a whole different issue when you're hounded by your own family for your beliefs. You can't ignore someone housing you threatening to kick you out because you had some leaflets on male suffering. You can't simply open a shelter when you receive no funding because your issues are "non existent".

Facts aren't facts and even with results, you're a misogynist. You get discredited and then nobody listens to you anymore. As for setting up charities and shelters. You need funding. We don't get funding for charities and shelters like that. Not only that but you need to be capable of running things like that and I don't have that training or experience, nor the mind for it quite honestly. The best I can offer are thoughts, opinions and an ear to listen to the men around me. If even one of my posts or conversations outside of reddit takes root in somone, I see that as a victory because that's all I can offer in my current situation.

I guess some people are leaders, some people are followers. I leave it to the people I recognise as smarter and more capable than me to lead the way (a bit of a cop out I guess) because I don't have the ability to.

i really enjoyed your quotations around hard as if to say essentially that men do not have it hard.

i don't know about you, but when i see stats regarding the sentencing gap, the abuse of father rights, suicides, work place deaths, homelessness, to name a few, the last thing i would ever do is suggest that men have it easy. Statistically, when men are violent against women, they use their fists. When women are violent against men they more often use weapons.

Here in lies the issue: while in the vast majority of cases a man has the ABILITY to defend himself against physical abuse by a woman, he is both conditioned not to and legally and socially penalized for doing so.

If a mother is in an abusive relationship, she has a host of options and support to call upon. If a father is in an abusive relationship, what are his options? If he leaves the home with his children he will find no shelters for himself and his children. If he moves out and goes to a friend or family members to live he will be charged with child abduction. So his only options are to leave by himself and thereby leaving his children in the home of an abusive parent or he can stay and act as a meatshield for his children.

If he calls 911, he will be removed from the home, even if he's the one calling for help.
