I have friends that are mechanics. Trust me they are ripping off the young guys as well. No one knows about fixing cars anymore. I know a young guy who got taken for 1200 for a thermostat and gasket. Showed him how much the parts cost and he was so embarrassed.

I worked in a garage for 7 years. Never understood why mechanics got such shade all the time.

Then I moved, got a new job and no longer have access to a lift. I fucking HATE dealing with mechanics. Had multiple attempts to screw me, a few successful (CUMMINS, FUCK CUMMINS DEALERS!)

So yea, mechanics aren't doing it based on gender. They screw everyone. I'm betting partially because they themselves are so used to being screwed. There's a reason I got out of the field and it's not because I didn't like fixing cars. The exploitation of "book hours" finally did me in.

I’m a man and I’ve been lied to and was attempted to be taken advantage of when I’ve gone into an auto mechanic before. They were saying all sorts of things and it would be $1,200. I brought it to some other shop and they only charged me $60 (parts and labor) and looked all over and couldn’t find anything else wrong.

I usually try to do my own work, but there are times when I'm too lazy or am missing a specialty tool to do something...Some of the estimates she's walked out with are obscene.

For example...the most recent was a air circulation motor...It's a 90$ part and 30 minutes of work...They were going to charge her 500$. Fuck all that.

Honestly, good for her. If she’s able to run a business marketing specifically to women, I don’t see any problem with it. Dealerships and shops do take advantage of people that they think don’t know better. The “feeling safe” and “we won’t rip you off because you’re women” lines are smart marketing. Her target market eats that shit up.

That’s also not a man vs woman thing. If I walked into ulta looking for a gift or something, they’d probably also direct me to more expensive and unnecessary things to upsale an unaware customer. It would not be difficult to identify me as the customer who wouldn’t know better.

All of this to say, this is actually what you want people to do when they perceive a problem in society. Don’t complain to government or make a social media campaign. Go start a fucking business and be the change you want to see in the world. The outcome of your project will highlight whether your cause mattered or not. Nobody else has to sacrifice anything.

Ok, this is actually a legit problem, once had the wife take her car in for some simple maintenance, I think break pad replacements, and they started trying to charge obscene amounts of money for simple shit, if not for the fact that I showed up there and started cutting down the bullshit, she'd have paid north of $2k for something that shouldn't be $200 at the time.

I’ve worked across several garages, dealerships, workshops etc, with mostly male mechanics/technicians, and I can absolutely say with my hand on heart, that nobody in the workshop sees a woman and says “yeah, let’s rip her off”, it just doesn’t happen at the majority of places, maybe at solo run garages, certainly not at places with multiple employees, this is such a non-issue, although great marketing for her I guess.

A lot of the guys I worked with were dads themselves, some had daughters, everyone was treated exactly how we would expect our mothers, grandmothers, daughters etc to be treated, with the utmost respect.

So congratulations, you've actually harmed large swaths of people in your altruistic quest to save the world. You know, if I were an actual misogynist, I would be dancing in the streets at the increased suicide, substance abuse, mood disorders, depression, and other mental illnesses this kind of worldview will lead to in women.

Mechanics have a reputation of trying to rip off anyone and everyone they can. I knew a mechanic who took his car in for a simple but tedious problem he didn't want to bother fixing at home. So he took it to a shop and they tried to add on a bunch of other repairs that "had to get done" and he was like nah, I just replaced half of what you said and the other is still good, just fix the one thing I said and I'll be on my way.

The way the "big boys" operate is they buy trucks on warrenty, and sell them before the warrenty expires, all the small jobs like replacing a bulb or something, they do it in-house, anything related to the engine, transmission, they take it to a dealer under warrenty.

With cars it's the same deal.

Once your car needs major repairs, it's time to sell it and get another car.

What happens mostly is these types of businesses never get followed up beyond the startup phase. Mostly create some buzz and then go dormant. It would be way more interesting to find out what happens two years down the line. But then most such startups are failures partly due to lack of actual merit or uniqueness.
