Ignoring the question of preselection (a woman wanting a man that is wanted by other women who chooses to exclusively commit to her), it's a simple market principle - if you have a product the other party desperately wants and you know they can't get it anywhere else, you're free to jack up the price to ridiculous heights. Translating it to a relationship would mean a man is too scared to set any kind of boundaries, less frequent intimacy, more financial and emotional investment from the man's side, more whimsical behavior from the woman's side, etc.

All of this essentially means that in order to be with a woman you actually desire as a man you absolutely ought to have other options clearly visible to your woman on top of your willingness to put up boundaries and your obvious readiness to walk away should she break them. If you haven't reached that level yet, before you try to shoot too high (in reality at your actual level because women's value is artificially inflated but that's another topic) I think your best way forward is complete focus on self improvement until you get there (face, body, status, money). If you desperately need some form of intimacy along the way I believe your best bet is either temporarily lowering your standards to abysmal lows in order to minimize the investment required from your side, (e.g. going for overweight women) or using sex workers.

tldr; the more desperately you need the product, the more the dealer will try to rip you off regardless of the current market price.
