My old church literally had a ministry position for this. It was basically a "door greeter" role and there was a whole team with specific roles dedicated to making the regulars feel special and visitors feel noticed.

From the pov of the members, they'd show up at church a few people milling around the front door when somebody would notice them approaching and break away from the crowd "omg John it is so good to see you! How is your model train collection coming along?!" and they would be exuberantly escorted into the building and palmed off onto an equally enthusiastic inside greeter who would guide them to where their designated friend group was waiting.

What they didn't see was that we had a spotter who would alert the greeting team any time there was a member approaching on their own. If they recognized the loner they would designate a greeter and remind them of the person's name and interests. They would also alert the inside greeters and inform them which friendship group they belonged to so that the friendship group could be informed in order to make a big fuss when they arrived as well as having a seat available.

New visitors would instead be welcomed politely and then escorted to the welcome desk where they would be introduced somebody who would get their gift bag of new testament, notebook, pencil, tracts and some sugary treats in exchange for their name and interests. They would then be guided into the main room where an inside greeter would designate them some friends who have shared interests or fit a similar demographic.

Needless to say, this church had a pretty low rate of churn despite its aggressive approach to tithing.

Yeah, I’ve been doing this subconsciously my whole life because I always wanted people to like me (nice guy syndrome). It definitely works and honestly you can definitely do it with strangers.

I would just compliment them on something and take interest in them like “where did you get that!?” Follow it up with some self deprecating humor like “I could never pull that off I have no sense of style hahaha”. 9 times out of 10 they will compliment you back and downplay themselves like “haha no, you look so cool, my friend just bought me this online!” if alcohol is involved congrats you just made a new best friend and both of you will exchange contact info, but then ghost each other the next morning when you’re hungover. Kidding, well kinda hahaha

Nah, I work with a guy that does this with everyone and it works. It took knowing him for 6 months before I could begin to pick him interacting with people he's known for years vs people he just met for the first time.

I get this too, I am an introvert and do like people who are enthusiastic, it makes me open up more BUT there is a limit. I hate when they act like we're already "bros" or some shit and call me derogatory names or do some ball busting close friends shit.

Yeah, I do that with my really close friends because we know eachother, we sometimes call eachother names but that shit dont fly and Ill get out of there quick if we just met. Also, it puts me on the spot, and it makes me exert too much energy in a convo like that.

I knew a guy on my brother in laws side like that, I try to avoid him everytime theres a gathering because his style just takes too much energy.

My mother-in-law always greets me with amazing enthusiasm. She does something we call "the peepee dance", where she raises her arms and tippy-taps her feet really fast while waiting for a hug. I love that woman! When she got out of the hospital after her cancer surgery, I did the pee-pee dance for her.

Also, when I was in high school I often greeted girls that were friends by giving them a great big bear hug while picking them up, and spinning them in a circle. I did it with all of them (even the ones that I could tell were worried they might be too big) and I spun them around like they were tiny. Years later, I learned that many of those female friends had crushes on me.

Edit: Honestly, I'd have to say this is one of the key elements that makes me feel a person has charisma.

Crazy enthusiastically would fluster me. I find people with really intense energy like that to be mentally draining. It’s nothing personal of course, just a bit too intense for my liking. I’d say if you can be sincere in your greeting that will actually get you much further.

It has worked numerous times no matter who it is. Politicians are especially well versed in it, look at bill Clinton and his introductions and networking skills. Regardless of what you may think of him, he gave people he met the best 30 seconds when he was introduced and that endeared him to a lot of people he wanted to influence.

I knew someone like this at work and he did exactly what you’re talking about, however it wasn’t an act and I’m positive he didn’t see it as a “hack” that’s genuinely how he is and those people are a dime a dozen. He doesn’t suffer from nice guy syndrome though. Get on his bad side (which is rare to see) and you will regret it.

Positivity doesn't hurt, but it won't accomplish what your title says and make "anyone" like you.

It will increase the chances that you won't shoot yourself down with people who are already predisposed to like you. Which is no small feat.

as long as you have the slightest connection with the person it will create in them a near dependence on you because of how amazing you make them feel whenever they see you.

Spreading good vibes makes people more positive and open about you. It doesn't create a dependence.

And that's good because creating a dependence is not what you want. True dependencies are imbalanced with each person weighing the other down and preventing them from being independent or capable of functioning on their own. In short, creating a dependency is making someone needy if they weren't already, or attracting an already needy person.

If someone is independent they have no desire to participate in an interaction with one person who's needy and dependent.

I call it a hack because you literally don't have to change anything about how you act or treat people for it to work.

I mean, you're talking about changing the way you act when you meet someone. That's a change. :P

That said, it's still a good suggestion. I would just say to reevaluate whether you really want to create a dependency in other people around you because that will weigh you down and hinder the growth of yourself and people you interact with.

Yes, this is one of the tricks I’ve had on my socializing tool belt since I was in school, it’s a psychology trick, I read it somewhere. It works on a primitive brain level, therefor it never feels fake to other people, if you doubt it just do it to someone and watch as the next time they see you they will greet you uncharacteristically more enthusiastic.

Personally I'd say, more than being crazy enthusiastic when you meet people, it's showing that you're taking interest in what they are saying is what impresses people.

If you just say "WHAT'S UP BRO?" really enthusiastically followed by a couple of compliments, then people will, more often than not, see right through that. Instead, you should just show interest in what they are saying like when you ask them questions like "How have you been?" and "What have you been up to?". Show interest in what they are saying rather treating it as a formal greeting and then zoning out. It may be tougher but most people would see through the fake enthusiasm unless you are a really good actor.

Well, yes and no. Mostly no. It has a solid grain of truth but let me explain, why the idea in itself is wrong...

This is something that I do a lot when going out. Usually I always end up in the same few bars and clubs. I know a lot of people there, and we greet each other very enthusiastically with a lot of hugs. Everybody had a few beers and we have a lot of fun doing it.

See it more as a ritual, where everybody voluntarily joins. Its fun, it raises your own mood, it raises the mood of the people you greet and you can be pretty sure it gets noticed by everyone sitting by him/herself or being slightly bored. So the whole thing makes it easier for you to approach other people.

But I also see a lot of people trying it and getting into cringeworthy situations. What makes people cringe? The sole idea to use it as a "hack to get anyone to like you" or any kind of manipulation. I would say, that 99% of all people get it subconsciously and the only reaction you get is a "yeah, whatever, fuck off"

Being positive is enough. The actual easiest way to get anyone to like you is to show genuine interest in the people you meet. This foundation affects most of your behaviour regarding other people, including your greetings, has the side effect of making yourself more interesting to others.

I’m usually put off by people that use over the top greetings. They instantly strike me as phony and disingenuous. I always assume that these people are desperate for attention so they act overtly enthusiastic. Maybe its just me though.

Completely agree. All the people I immediately like the most are like this. I’m not naturally like this so I certainly appreciate someone’s ability to be this way and I find it loveable. However, not everyone digs this as much as I do. Some people like this at my work are the most hated on. The people who hate also happen to be giant a-hole, bully types who seem to be miserable in life, so it may be safe to just say they are awful and just not include them in the normal response group.

My only problem is that I really, really don't feel like being overly cheery and being afraid of it sounding fake. But I guess this is one of those things that you'll have to fake until you make it.

Some people have been asking for examples there are a couple in the comments from others but here's one of mine.

One of my coworkers is VERY introverted, no social life, hates small talk etc. but every time I see him he gives me two thumbs up and says "Heyyyy how's everything going? perfect! excellent! amazing! fantastic! wonderful!" and I always reply everythings going amazing! perfect! wonderful!" and we try and keep on adding words to how great a day we are having till the words are exhausted. Dude makes me feel PUMPed up every time I see him, Even though its the exact same interaction and never has changed everyday for over a year.

To the people commenting that this is fake and people are going to hate you for it, I think you are only thinking of one type of over the top enthusiasm where someone basically yells nice things at you that you know aren't true. I agree... don't do this. It's not a bad thing to try and add a little spark to your everyday encounters to make them better.
