If she aborts neither party is left to take care of the child alone. If a man "paper aborts" the woman is left to take care of the child alone and a child is left without a father. People should just figure out beforehand if their partner actually wants a child and also if they'd be willing to abort. If your values don't align then it's stupid to have unprotected sex with each other.

There's a really easy way to avoid having a kid, using a condom.

This crusade never speaks the unspoken fact here, that men end up with kids they don't want because they don't want to use a condom. They want to hit it raw because it feels better. They want to think with their little dickie not their brain. And then cry when when entire purpose of sex, reproduction, happens.

Condoms don't belong in your wallet but they do protect it. If you can't have a satisfying sex life with condoms, too bad so sad. You created life, support it. I don't want to pay for your semen deposits, two pump champ.

Let’s just say if someone ever decided to pull the rug out from under me with a child, they would never, ever see said child, ever again. You don’t get to rescind your parental rights and then still want to be “involved.”

Secondly, no. Biology’s not fair, life’s not fair. Women risk a lot being pregnant and we have to do it, not you. That means we have more of a say. Paying a few hundred bucks a month is not the same as, literally, risking your life to deliver a child and spending all your time parenting them. Financial support implies less personal involvement, so boo hoo there too. Do not put yourself in a situation where you are even potentially impregnating someone you wouldn’t be ok raising a child with. If you do, you suffer the consequences either way.

there would be a lot of complexity to enforcing such a law in a way that would maintain paternal rights for those men that want to keep them.

a woman would need to a) know she is pregnant and b) notify the man (assuming there is only 1) and c) get his verdict on whether or not he wants to be involved all in a relatively short window. and likely need everything motorized. given the demo that tends to experience unplanned pregnancies this does not seem feasible.

or the alternative would be that any woman who is not married is not entitled to any child support from the father, and he is not entitled to any kind or parental role in the child’s life without her explicit invitation. this is unlikely to fly because a) the state is not super keen to support these children who are at risk of becoming maladaptive as is and b) some men would actually not love the idea of not having a default parental role in the lives of the children they sire.

and thus we are stuck with the status quo.

Child exists.

Child needs stuff and to eat.

Option A) state raises taxes and helps support the destitute child

Option B) state makes the man responsible pay for the child

Option C) let the kid starve, increase negative externalities of child poverty (cause everybody loves that right?)

Most people, MEN included, don't want to pay for stranger's kids. So the state makes the guy pay. The woman is usually already paying so they just equalize it between the parents.

If you don't want the child to exist and have need for support then you better be pro-abortion.

A lot of men don‘t care about using protection now that they have to pay child support, what makes you think they would care more if there are no consequences?

If the fear of paying child support makes you moves to another state, you would not be a good father and should not have custody.

Most men don‘t want 50/50 custody. So if the mother of your child does most of the childcare, you have to compensate her for the extra costs and lost income. Same story if you had the majority of the custody.

The only time I think not paying child support is when the kid was not planned and the father gives up his rights to the child. Like an adoption.

I don’t get it. Women have the choose to abort or not so shouldn’t men have the choice not to be financially responsible for the child? What if the man didn’t want to have a child?

Women have a choice of whether to create another person from conception. Men don't. Women are not responsible for this and, considering that men don't have to gestate either, aren't really getting the best side of the bargain in the first place.

If a man doesn't want a child, all that's required is not leaving his sperm anywhere it's going to be involved in conception. That's not hard.

AND the support is owed to the child, not the mother or whoever else that child's guardian may be.

And it would eliminate the incentive for women to baby trap.

Baby traps are nonsense unless the male involved is incapable of consent.

I also think getting rid of mandatory financial responsibility would cause the fathers to be involved in their kids lives more.

A man who is unwilling to support his child probably isn't going to be a plus in a child's life. More, it's a law that looks out for the child's well-being, not for the father's avoidance of responsibility.

It's not anti abortion to be anti child support. It is, however, inaccurate to compare the steps of biologically creating a child to the financial responsibility of a child after you've done your part to participate in its creation.

Both people take biological steps to create a child. Neither person can make decisions about the biological steps the other person took.

Only if both people chose to do their biological part and make a child, does a child exist.
