Implications for studying dating decisions, as well as practical considerations for designing dating profiles and apps, are discussed.

Something related to this thread I've been thinking recently is how media frequently uses beauty as a shorthand to communicate morality and the extent they play around with this.

Plenty of people want to see the hot guys win and the ugly guys lose, and it's pretty simple to do that.

But many writers go a step beyond that. The seem self aware of the consequent common association that beauty=good, and use that to visually communicate more abstract ideas.

Specially in anime/cartoon media, you can tell the different connotations the writers want to give when they draw a beautiful villain Vs when they draw an ugly villain.

Ugly villain: uncomplicated, irredeemable evil. Their motivations are communicated to be sadistic self interest, cult-like brainwashing, and other forms of evil that do not require analysis or debate. Often less narratively central.
beautiful villain: tragic, ideological, humane, redeemable, morally complex, anti-hero. Invite the audience to think about the validity of their motivations, or draw sympathy from them. Often more narratively central.

There is also a gender aspect to this. Female villains are often hot regardless, with hot manipulative seductresses being a common trope. However, with male villains, fat chance that if the piece of media features both hot and ugly male villains, there's information to draw from that distinction.

Examples: - Griffith from Berserk, in comparison to the rest of villains - Berkut from Fire Emblem Echoes, in contrast to the rest of villains' (this one is in fact especially interesting because many players feel the plot treats him with more sympathy than he logically deserves, like his looks are a way to try to better communicate that he's meant to be sympathetic in dissonance with what he actually does as a character) - Edelgard from Fire Emblem Three Houses, in comparison with the rest of villains, especially the ones that she allies with - hell the entire Fire Emblem series in general. Nerdy thoughts from having played Fire Emblem Echoes recently. The whole series is no stranger to this trope but I found it interesting what they did with Berkut. Spoilers for a game you likely won't ever play: Prince is raised in a society where he was only valued and loved for his strength (except by his fiancé). Ends up not strong enough despite that being all he's focused on since birth, in part because due to destiny/prophecy bullshit he was destined to fail anyway and yet people around him kept that a secret for the sake of that prophecy. So he loses his father figure's approval and with it his right to the throne. In the middle of his mental breakdown his fiancé tells him she's glad because she didn't want to be queen anyway and now Berkut no longer would have a reason to be obsessed with power. So, in his paranoia he takes this as confession that she too was conspiring against him and laughing behind his back and sacrifices her to a dark god to gain power with which to at least try to take vengeance. Loses again, and in his dying throes, his fiancé's spirit comes back to tell him that she forgives him and knows that deep down he's a good and just nobleman, and takes him to heaven with her.

I', talking about due to genetics, you don't develop the strong jaw, facial hair, your skin remains soft and your face generally just looks like it stopped developing after the age of 15.

This is what I don't understand about "looksmatching" and how it is spoken about on this sub. If we acknowledge that men rate beauty far out of proportion with other factors, and women rate looks more balanced with non-looks factors, then it makes sense that we'd see a skew of better-looking women with worse-looking men. Women cannot compensate for lack of beauty; men can compensate for lack of looks.

Yet all across this sub men insist that "runaway hypergamy" is causing an abundance of model tier Chads pairing up with obese uggos. They claim "above average men" are constantly having to pair up with "average women," even though that goes directly against the concept that men prioritize looks more and women prioritize resources and status more

The data is that most couples are considered roughly looksmatched, but if men can compensate for their lack of looks then the reality is that most couples will be roughly looksmatched, or have a better looking woman. As I've said before, there's a reason why there's a trophy wife concept and not really so much a trophy husband.

I have not personally seen any evidence that this has changed, despite what men on this sub say they see all the time. I think that viewpoint comes from either confirmation bias or overrating men/not acknowledging the uneven scales of sexual dimorphism (e.g. higher body fat in women is more attractive than higher body fat in men, and shorter height in women isn't considered as unattractive or relevant as shorter height in men). These things do not translate 1-to-1.
