When I was a teen, I graduated from a babysitter certification course. It was mostly other boys in the class. I thought that being certified in things like infant CPR and learning to structure playtime child engagement would help me make some money on the side and develop skills to be a better parent someday.

But only girls got hired. None of the certified boys could get hired. People would rather pay an untrained girl than a trained boy. That was a harrowing realization that's stuck with me all my life.

Our best babysitter was male. When we arrived home, our daughter was sleeping soundly, the soiled diaper was properly disposed of in the sealed rubbish bin, and when I checked, she was thoroughly clean.

That said, neither my husband nor I are feminists, so I grant that that might explain our comfort with hiring a male babysitter.

Considering all the cases of young female teachers raping their students, I certainly see no reason to be more wary of males.

Added: I think it’s important for boys especially to have more male role models in their life. Most of their teachers are women. Having a male baby sitter is a great, easy way for children to have a male role model.

I'd probably be reluctant to trust my kids to anyone I didn't know well enough to trust, regardless of gender- but then, I don't have kids, so that's more about me than them.

As an early teen I used to babysit for a friend of my mom's. She has four girls, all younger than me. It was never an issue in any way. Of course, this was the early 2000s, before men got labeled as monstrous rape pedos waiting to happen.

Yeah. I have a friend couple that let me (single, Male 40+) pick up their daughter for play dates and sleepovers with my daughter. So I would have no problem letting another man watch my daughter.

I would have to know them first. Not a stranger obviously. I would meet anyone first if I were to hire from a company and get a feel from that but I (for the most part) trust companies to vet their employees, considering the nature of the business.

Yeah? The boys are more likely to need that money a bit more so are more likely to make sure they do a good job. I wouldn’t hire anyone without betting though, and I’d want at least a few people to vouch for them.

Most offenders in paid care are women. You can find videos of babies being brutally violated and worse, usually by women. Is that JUST because men don't get to do that job as much? Male students ARE allowed into nursing and doctoring schools. Eagerly welcomed, even.
Most grape of underage students is by female teachers. One such teacher is first lady of France, and her victim the president. The facts are not disputed, but if you repeat the fact, they will find a technicality to jail you over.

Go see some videos of women butchering defenseless children. Tell me how you feel about male babysitters now. It's all about your FEELINGS after all, not facts?

I was in high school in the early nineties. I babysat all the time. Nobody blinked an eye. Watched boys and girls. Worked at an afterschool daycare program at the elementary school. I was deliberately hired so the boys had someone to relate to. I was a lifeguard at the local pool, and certified swimming instructor. We touched and held kids all the time. It wasn’t fucking weird.

I think it wouldn't matter as much. I could literally buy a smartwatch and be on call with them the entire time. When the child gets older they could just use a phone.

I'm not saying I wouldn't be a little worried, male or female. But typically a lot of people who are worried, don't actually think about what could address that fear. Like home security etc. If they know the kid is being watched (worst pun ever) or has some type of recorder in the bag that's always on, there's going to be way less of a chance things will happen.

I've spent more money on things that weren't remotely as important as a child. Getting some wireless recording equipment or the equivalent of a police cam is a drop in the bucket.

And by the way, you gotta love how certain people use ‘hire a male babysitter, then’ as a gotcha moment to supposedly prove how much of a threat men are to children. Yet, the actual reason why people keep hiring female babysitters is because women are typically the only ones signing up and offering to do it.

Though, jokes aside, if I ever have children and I can’t get anyone around my social circle to look after them in case of an emergency…I’m definitely hiring a male babysitter. Same reason why I’d most likely homeschool them, ‘cause I don’t see this creepy female teacher epidemic going away any time soon. And same reason why I’d keep an eye around my female friends too…just in case.

I’m was a pediatric ICU and ER nurse for about 5 years and I always felt a little sad bc I kinda look like a stereotypical creep (short and balding) and I felt like people didn’t trust me around children but I would statistically actually be one of the safest people for a child to be around. So I think just as with any candidate you would need to vet them and hear their qualifications. I never tried to baby sit anyone other than my niece and nephew though.
But at the same time I am not a parent myself and I don’t blame them knowing about 94% of sexual offenders are men (source). Is it wrong to be judged just bc I’m a man and look a certain way? Yes. But I can understand where they are coming from. It’s like people that will leave their infant child alone with a pitbull bc he’s “one of the good gentle nanny ones”. He might be, but statistically it’s just not worth the risk for most people (not a perfect analogy but you get where I’m coming from)

If the goal is child safety, then vet everyone the same way.

Rejecting a trained male while trusting an untrained girl by default is silly.

We already understand this in other contexts. Some women prefer a male gynecologist over a female one. Competence and professionalism matter more than gender.

And in certain situations, having a man present can actually be a great deterrent.

Most child abuse is committed by women. I was abused by a woman myself. It became so bad that I attempted suicide so I wouldn't have to take any more of her abuse. I thought it was the only way to escape her. When it came out, it turned out she'd abused lots and lots of other children, but only boys. Never a girl. I wasn't the only one of her victims who attempted suicide either, but I was the first to survive his attempt. She admitted when it came out that she derived great pleasure from torturing boys. She'd been doing it for nearly 20 years!

So the false scenario constantly promoted that man commit child abuse and are not to be trusted like women should be is simply ignorance. Pure sexist ignorance.

And the image of male child abuser is promoted everywhere: in books, film, television, and practically anywhere else you can think of. How often do you see a woman child abuser in any movie? Not very. Just like 42% of domestic abuse victims are men, yet male victims are never mentioned by media, in magazines, portrayed in books, movies, TV shows. How often do you see male domestic abuse victims in movies or on TV (even though they make up close to half the victims)? Also, not very often. Only women victims are ever MENTIONED! Our society lies to us. It offers us the cool-aid and we drink it down with gusto.

No. I wouldn't hire a goddamn baby sitter of any sort.

Now, my wife and I aren't ever going to have kids. Part of that reason is that we both have a career, we both work. If I wanted to be with someone and have kids, then one of us would be dedicated to childcare and take on that responsibility full time. There will be no day cares. There will be no babysitters. We, as parents, would parent and care for our children.

Kids are generally in first grade around age 6. Four years later, they should be able to be OK on their own for an hour or two at home. By age 15, they should be able to overnight on their own. It's not like they take all of your time forever.

Heck no. My little brother was raped by a male babysitter when he was 9 - I was 12. We never had issues with our female babysitters.

My niece (my brother’s daughter) was then molested by a male babysitter - she was 5, now 9. As far as I know, she’s never had issues with female babysitters.
