Many of us like to believe our views spring forth solely from intellect or direct personal experience, but as i get older and get involved with more people i feel like our formative relationships influence us way more than we like to admit. So how did the relationships modeled to you start the path that ended with you arguing with strangers about the nature of romance between the genders? I’ll go first.

My parents were both vaguely liberated 60s culture kids who tried to go traditionalist during the whole Reagan “Morning in America” shit. My dad went from being a motorcycle hippie to a fundamentalist christian; my mom went from being a pop feminist for her time (a little second wave, lotta respectability politics) to quitting her job to be a stay at home mom like the creepy cultlike church they started attending encouraged.

It went poorly, especially for my mother. She hated being a SAHM and was pretty bad at it. They had marriage problems pretty early on but stayed together “for the kids,” which they were both pretty obvious about. She especially did most mom activities with bitterness and resentment, and i learned to feel guilty for existing pretty early on. My dad mostly got lost in work and traveled a lot. There were likely affairs, but he never went all the in way leaving my mom, in part as she made it clear it would be an ugly divorce and she is also a fan of stealth threatening suicide. Oh and gosh there was a lot of fighting.

Basically, i love my mother, but the prospect of being stuck in a marriage to someone like her is genuinely terrifying to me. I feel bad that she got the short end of the stick in financial power (and employability after quitting her job) but i would much rather just not be in that position with someone at all. The red pill view is that clearly she wasn’t “shown to her seat” in a way that brought out her feminine whatever. My personal opinion is that the traditional mold they tried to force themselves into just made it all worse. Though it’s honestly difficult imagining her happy in any scenario.

In short, my parents’ marriage was an unfortunate process that outlined the pitfalls of “traditional” relationships. On the one hand that has influenced my social opinions and I’m a decent feminist in the streets, and i agree intellectually that my mother suffered under a patriarchal system that gave her a role she was fundamentally unsuited for. In my PERSONAL life, it has made me hyper critical of my partners and paranoid about commitment and domesticity. I would rather die partnerless (not counting the eventual sugarbabies) than be stuck with someone who is going to let themselves go right after the wedding and then try to lock my dick in a box from a matching set they got at Crate & Barrel. And kids? Just another anchor weighing you down.

As such, the chief things i look for in a partner are a rigorous attention to their appearance and a consistent track record of nymphomania. If she has both of those qualities and a sharp mind, i will make the rest work (and i have had quite long relationships for a poly weirdo sex freak).

So anyway, why are YOU so messed up? I’d encourage people to be honest and vulnerable even if it doesn’t put your abstract opinions in the best light.
