I get you, but I feel like Huxley had it right. Orwell's dystopia involved extreme censorship; Huxley's involved disclosing everything, but drowning out anything substantial in a sea of irrelevancy.
[–]caseywritescoffee 82 points83 points84 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The core of Orwell isn't just extreme censorship, but the development of how one thinks to essentially self-promote it. This is even more obvious if you read Orwell's essays (which are even better than his books). People in 1984 weren't kept from the truth, they fully bought into the truth which had been given to them regardless of any contrarian evidence of which there was actually plenty, i.e. double-think. That's why the book starts with that clock "striking 13" line. The sort of behaviors seen in 1984 are very much on display everywhere, particularly when you look at politics where one side can do no wrong and the other is essentially the devil.
[–]Sarin_G_Series 45 points46 points47 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
I think that the best prediction, in 1984, was the depiction of informants. A citizen's thoughts were policed because they couldn't share them without worrying that they could be reported to the government. Now, replace totalitarian laws with the "court of public opinion," and that is exactly what's going on these days.
Edit/addendum: I believe you're absolutely correct, when you consider people who toe party lines without question. Makes me wish Heinlein had been the one most accurate, and least idealistic.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In all fairness, she only pried open her baby sister's outer labia because there were pebbles inside. Everyone should have that freedom. Do we want prepubescent girls running around with pebbles getting sucked into their cervixes and damaging their Fallopion tubes?
[–]snoopyzanus 135 points136 points137 points 9 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
She didn't open her sister's vagina because it had pebbles inside, she did it out of curiosity and then found pebbles in there. “My mother didn’t bother asking why I had opened Grace’s vagina,” Dunham wrote. “This was within the spectrum of things that I did.” (Quote in first link below.)
Your post may be sarcastic, but for the benefit of those who don't know the actual details of what Lena did to her sister, this is from an old post of mine:
Firstly, for context: ...when Dunham was seven and her sister was one and playing on the driveway. Dunham writes that “curiosity got the best” of her and she opened her sister’s vagina only to call for her mother when she found the toddler had “six or seven pebbles in there”. I've looked at a number of sites to get some more information on this story, and one thing I find telling is that those who seem sympathetic to and supportive of her focus on the incident that happened when she was seven. And when you read the comments a lot of people think that, well, seven year olds can do this sort of stuff innocently. They don't give this quote (source): I shared a bed with my sister, Grace, until I was seventeen years old. She was afraid to sleep alone and would begin asking me around 5:00 P.M. every day whether she could sleep with me. I put on a big show of saying no, taking pleasure in watching her beg and sulk, but eventually I always relented. Her sticky, muscly little body thrashed beside me every night as I read Anne Sexton, watched reruns of SNL, sometimes even as I slipped my hand into my underwear to figure some stuff out. They either don't quote or don't focus on the bolded part here: As she grew, I took to bribing her for her time and affection: one dollar in quarters if I could do her makeup like a “motorcycle chick.” Three pieces of candy if I could kiss her on the lips for five seconds. Whatever she wanted to watch on TV if she would just “relax on me.” Basically, anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl I was trying. (Bolding mine.) This wasn't a couple of incidents at age seven. This was years of deliberate grooming, emotional manipulation and sexual exploitation of her sister. It's not like as an adult she looked back and thought "What the fuck was I doing?" either. No. She seems proud of that shit.

The awful thing is that whenever she says these things it reminds me so much of my oldest sister. She was never a molestor of course, but she would always do really inappropriate things up until she was like 20 years old. Many times she would lay under some blankets in the middle of the family room while we were all watching television, with her hand down there making a lot of movement.
Like, yeah. I don't really want to say that she was masturbating because I do love her, but it was always really uncomfortable for my younger sister (who is also very anti-feminist) and me. I don't know if she knew others could tell, or if she literally didn't care because she is a very radical feminist because FUCK YOU. DON'T SLUT SHAME ME! We all masturbate! Is it just ok for men to do it huh?
When in reality I would never masturbate while watching a movie with my family nor would I EVER feel compelled to do that. After all, feminists love shaky analogies like claiming that men are revered as heroes when they fuck 100 girls and girls are shamed when in reality nobody likes slutty people, and their gender has very little to do with it. OK, end tirade. Anyway, sometimes my sister would make me feel extremely comfortable with things she would do.
Like, one time I accidentally walked in on her when she was about to hop in the shower, and she texted me after that "am I sexy naked," and on multiple occasions she asked me how big I was down there. I feel like if the genders had been reversed I would have been in a world of trouble. I still wonder to this day if she had any ulterior motives or if she was just really odd during that time in her life. I truly believe that feminism has emboldened women to sexually assault/harass people because I've had so many uncomfortable moments that revolved around family members or friends who were girls. They were all radical feminists.

Lena Dunham's attitude and lack of dignity is part and parcel of upbringing in an environment with no boundaries or basic enforcement of boundaries. Remember, her father painted erotic images of penetration, naked women, and private parts all in their embellished glory. They were a common feature around the household.

She's an actress as far as I know. She has a show on HBO called "Girls", which I think she created and writes for also.
[–]chocoboat 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Lena Dunham achieved fame as the writer and star of the HBO series called Girls. Before that, in college and the years after she made a lot of weird feminist artsy films where she's in her underwear a lot of the time. Somehow people in the art world liked it, Judd Apatow and some other important people took notice of her, and she got a deal to do an HBO show.
Her show was about self-centered immature girls living in New York and their sex lives. Lena got a lot of "body positive" type of attention in the media for being frequently naked in the show while being significantly overweight. She has a lot of celebrity support, she appeared in a Taylor Swift music video, she's been on all of the talk shows, and campaigned for Obama and Hillary.
She was paid $3.6 million for a book deal and it was a best-seller. Somehow everyone in the world of show biz and politics ignores the fact that she wrote about molesting her sister until the age of 17 and has no shame about it. Hillary Clinton granted her an interview during the campaign... she's regularly invited onto the Tonight Show... no one thinks her sexually abusing her sister matters at all. Lena even once said "I haven't had an abortion, but I wish I had" and the only criticism she received came from conservatives.
Her parents are wealthy, and her father is known for his vagina artwork.
After growing up with those parents and a sister who sexually abused her, Lena's sister now has a buzzcut, dresses like a man, has removed anything feminine or sexually attractive about her appearance and says she is not a woman. She remains close friends with her sister and denies that she was abused.

Your "genius" retort might be more fitting if it was her brother who was molested. Anyway she hardly molested anyone it was the equivalent to playing doctors. Are we starting a witch hunt against kids who played doctor now? Don't know why this trainwreck attracks so much attention anyway if someone like her is hated by the mainstream conservatives its a clue that we need to set our sights a bit higher. Like the purveyors of female victimhood.
Unwittingly you,re just reinforcing female victimhood which is the real enemy.

The labels we live under are constructs put in place by the bigoted rich white men who profit off of the blood, sweat and tears of the common man...of ALL colors. They feed down trodden white men the illusion that you're "one of us" when in fact you're of as much use to them as a black, Hispanic or Asian man. When your usefulness has run it's course, you're discarded. Just look at all of the people our "President" pretty much conned into getting him into the White House? They're getting fucked over same as all the rest of us who didn't vote for him...or didn't vote at all. They just toss them a few scraps and promise "it's only temporary". And they continue to believe the shit they're being fed is ice cream.
The fact of the matter in my eyes is this...The American male is under attack. Doesn't matter what you're race is. The only color that matters is the color of your collar. And the blue collar, working, tax paying American man is being led to the slaughterhouse. A government who profits from our taxes, but robs us of our pensions, civil services...and soon even our health care. A marital system that benefits women...giving them a free pass to leech off of our work...and forces us to pay for them should either side decide they want no part in it. And of course if a child is involved...we males reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally get the short end of the deal. More men in this country need to wake up to the fact that this isn't a race issue...it's a human rights issue. We're essentially being turned into cattle. For the government, big business and women. We have to fight...or we die and doom our sons, and their sons to the same fate.

You are right. it was a terrible thing that over 400,000 white men died to stop slavery in the US and abroad. Just terrible.
When you talk about what "white men" lay your blame squarely on the pro-slavery democratic party, the Democratic terrorist KKK, and the democrat sponsored welfare legislation that leaves blacks in perpetual poverty.
Also, you can thank us for Hip Hop music, which is basically a drum and skeltonic verse.
My point is, The amount of white people who have done something bad to blacks is ridiculously small. And if we want to make mountains out of such molehills, then every minor crisis becomes an emergency.

[–]MattClark0995 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yea, no. See my response to the other Democrat. Your party is more than happy to bash white males. You do it all the time and aren't above making jokes about the white male suicide rate.
Disgusting party.

Bro I'm a white French guy living in Finland, I couldn't give less fucks about what the Democrats or Republicans think, much less about white males
[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
The Democratic party doesn't attack white men... for instance, they'll attack workplace racism or sexism, which happens to be predominantly done by white men. This is similar to how courts attack crimes, but these happen to be predominantly done by minorities - that's because they're poor, but then the court system punishes a disproportionate number of minorities beyond that.
It's not about attacking white men, it's about attacking behavior which is predominantly performed by white men, such as refusing to hire or promote women/minorities... but, of course, that's only some white men, which is where the problem lies, as the latest wave of outrage feminism expressed through hacks like Dunham / Schumer are off their rockers crazy when it comes to how and what they're attacking, as they've gone full circle racist/sexist about it.

I guess we can call this Demsplaining. The lefty of lefty media outlets disagrees with you tho.
I type in "white men" on Salon, this is what I get.
Here's the first results (huffington Post results are similar):
“He was your average Joe”: The police and the media coddle another white killer A lone wolf, a "regular Joe." Maybe mentally disturbed. Again, we talk differently about white killers and Muslims"
"White guys are killing us: Toxic, cowardly masculinity, our unhealable national illness"
"Straight white dude seeks same: Race, power and the secret world of straight guy-on-guy action" "Dudes sitting around stroking, watching a game, drinking brews, jerking, swapping college stories, showing off...
"FBI’s “rich white man” hypocrisy: How new policy will let the 1 Percent skate free"
"White male temper tantrums: What the “political correctness” debate completely misses"
Nope, no white male bashing here. One of my 'favorite' examples recently happened. A white male Democrat made a joke about the white male suicide rate (lol, so funny those gross white males are killing themselves) and the entire room of Democrats laughed it up.
Fuck them. At this point, if you are a white male and vote Democrat you have to harbor at least a little self-hate.

lol okay. And don't even bitch about the source. It happened. Fact. And it's not like CNN was going to report on it.

Does the DNC vet you shills for literacy? The fact that she was a candidate and they gave her a platform to open her pandering mouth, Sherlock, was bad enough. Relevant.

How about you fucking use some critical thinking? Being a candidate has nothing to do with an entire party that represents 150 million people. Is the GOP to be defined by its Libertarian branch? Or its fascist branch? Or its evangelical branch? Or its Neoconservative branch?

Perhaps the outrage tumbler "feminism" where they've co-opted the name, but egalitarian feminism, ala original academic feminism, attacks inequalities whereever they lie - that white men happen to have largely been the propagators of those inequalities is where the idea that they're all they attack comes from, and the very confused new waves of feminism that Dunham/Schumer subscribe to completely forget about it in favor of just hating the symbol of oppression they've created - missing the fact that women can be just as oppressive, and minorities as well.
That a few people are vocal idiots shouldn't mean you yourself just stop being an intelligent person who understands what the point is.... or do you think racism and sexism simply don't exist?
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Feminists do not seem to believe themselves capable of racism/sexism. They demand to be treated as equals while simultaneously demanding an ever expanding litany of gender based preferences and entitlements. Look no further than the "Duluth Model"- behaviors are either wrong on principle or they aren't wrong at all. If an "angry stare" was domestic violence every wife in the world would be in jail- but their self serving definitions of oppression preclude them from any culpability.
[–]pokemon_fetish 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Remember the feminist articles when Selective Service becoming gender-neutral was a hot topic?
I believe this is the exact quote from one (going from memory so...): "This isn't the equality I signed up for!"
They want to be protected from every instance where equality can have a negative outcome for them. And who will protect them? The State, which they equate with Patriarchy...

Feminism has always been the avocation of equality for women. There's a reason that it has fem at the beginning and why true equality activism has a different name. It was just created in a time when women needed people to advocate for their rights. It makes no sense in the modern western world anymore.
do you think racism and sexism simply don't exist?

I knew a group of girls at an internship in Baltimore. One of them wanted to go out to the city at night near a very rough area. I tried to tell her it was a bad idea, and she says "Why, because it's all black people? You're racist??" No I just have common sense. There are literally murders there every day.
I guess my point is, not only are these white women completely clueless to their cushy lives, they're so disconnected from reality from all the propaganda that it can endanger their well-being.
[–]AloysiusC 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well what did you expect? When you don't have to face reality because it's everyone else's job to protect you from it, then you don't need to know anything about it either. You can just sit on your high horse judging everything in blissful ignorance.

Let's not pretend that there are no poor white people, though. Part of my childhood was spent in middle class suburbia, but part of it was also spent in a lower class ghetto once my parents split.
My Dad didn't really want anything to do with me after the split, so I've only experienced some minor benefits after that point, like the occasional dinner and school supplies.
I went to a crappy public school just like most of the poor kids in my area. There was gang violence daily, and we had to be careful to look like we weren't carrying anything valuable.
Lena Dunham is a privileged woman. There are plenty of whites that aren't.

I think the politics aspect of "identity politics" is merely the manifestation we see socially. The "identity" part is far more insidious.
In any activist group there are those who identify with the fight, not the solution. So, when you come along and offer a solution, you're actually attacking that individual at the lowest possible level: their identity. A person's ego can't take that, so you end up with a belligerent counter-attack by the individual for the sole purpose of protecting that identity. Since people are generally all about the path of least resistance, what's easier? Screeching like a banshee in defense of one's distorted identity, or questioning one's own identity, possibly triggering an identity crisis?
I've seen this kind of thing in pretty much every single activist movement. Obviously, this doesn't apply to everyone involved, generally just a very small subset, but that subset tends to be the loudest and most belligerent, for obvious reasons.

This is the most hilariously outrageously sexist comment I've ever seen on this subreddit and it is so fucking fitting that on the men's rights subreddit you have this kind of utterly debasing stereotypical sexism
I mean can you not take one fucking second to take a step back and realize that by calling all white women spoiled brats that you are engaging in the very stereotyping sexism that this subreddit is supposed to be designed to combat? "Hurr Durr Lena doesn't understand white men, she represents all white women and they're all spoiled brats." Do you not see the hypocrisy?
Or are you too fucking self-absorbed in your fake wisdom about how all white women are spoiled brats for you to even be able to understand that by stereotyping hundreds of millions of people you're only making yourself look like the foolish fucking idiot that this subreddit is supposed to call out
You represent the cult of faux intellectualism, of self aggrandizing fake psychology, and it sick to watch you rationalize yesterday's broken sexism by trying to use today's and tomorrow's intellectual language

Worked security 10 years since 19. I've probably been both physically and emotionally attacked in the first 5 years than many will in their life time and take shit daily.
When a large adult male shows his intent to harm you it's always frightening if you're not in the right frame of mind, but at least you're not afraid of having your name shit on or your livelihood taken, a woman is so much harder to deal with because you find yourself tip toeing around them to avoid the inevitable threats and public humiliation, touching them to physically escort them off the property or make a citizens arrest is met with:
"HELP, THESE MEN ARE ATTACKING MEEEE" OR
"I'M GONNA HAVE YOUR JOB YOU DICKLESS SLIME BALL"
My favorite is: "SEE HOW BRAVE YOU ARE WHEN [INSERT MALE RELATION] GETS HOLD OF YOU
All these threats are real and I've had a public intoxication or shoplift turn into major problems because of women. I'm not saying men are not a problem, they're just not to be taken as seriously imo

I don't really like to say survivor to describe what happened to me (and I am not knocking you for using it, I don't know your story) but always try and strive to live well despite and to spite. I found flaunting my successes that were independent of my abuser to be therapeutic.

For context, this is the actual quote, in which she was saying Hillary Clinton gets more scrutiny than other presidential candidates:
“The other candidates are white men and they cannot understand, even if they can understand it intellectually . . . for what it’s like to be under that kind of attack, and I’m so impressed by the way she continues to soldier forth.”
http://pagesix.com/2016/04/09/lena-dunham-reaffirms-her-love-for-hillary/
She was very specifically talking about political attacks, not talking about military attacks.
I happen to disagree with her about that, and I also just think we could all stand to stop assuming someone else can't understand something because of that person's race or sex or any other characteristic. But I think editing the quote and then presenting it in a context in which it wasn't actually used is a little unfair.

Completely agreed. Lena should be shamed for the terrible things she has actually said and done... it's counterproductive to make up fake things.
Still, if anyone deserves this kind of bullshit treatment it's Lena. She admits to sexually abusing her sister and spews all kinds of lies and bullshit and still gets invited onto the Tonight Show and gets an interview with Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign. What the hell would it take for her to actually be socially rejected in the celebrity world these days? Anything short of committing murder will be ignored... unless she does something truly evil and irredeemable like saying that immigration laws should be enforced, or that there are two genders.

We must not let this kind of thing stir up problems between white and black men. Black men actually have and still are to some degree discriminated against, because of being black as well as because of being men.

There's already problems black men are very violent towards white men according to crime statistics.
This is largely a rich vs poor thing, not a white vs black thing. Poor uneducated whites from broken families have high rates of violence too.
Also, the vast majority of violence done by black people is done to other black people. Just as the majority of violence by whites is done to whites. Despite society's views changing, people still mostly hang around with (and develop conflicts with) their own racial groups.
Violence is the only discrimination that matters
Wrong. Nobody's committing violence when fathers are denied access to their children, or being sent to jail when they can't afford their alimony payments, or being treated like child abductors for going out in public with their child without the mother being around. Those things absolutely matter.
[–]ScottyBrown 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Haha. Everything the state does is done through violence. Women use the violence of the state to keep men from their children. Violence is the law. Culture is a bigger indicator for violence than being poor. A culture based on being a badass like rednecks or ghetto culture will create more violence.
A culture based on being a badass like rednecks or ghetto culture will create more violence.
I can't speak to whether or not she's genuinely concerned, but Miley Cyrus has abandoned the rap stuff and basically cited misogyny in the genre as a reason. The social justice crowd, instead of talking about her point and starting a dialogue have instead taken to accusing Miley of getting rich off of black culture.
I'm as anti-censorship as they come, but I fear in my old age I am becoming Tipper Gore-kin
Also, the vast majority of violence done by black people is done to other black people.
Beat me to it.
It's both amusing and scary when you see people with young audiences like Franchesca Ramsey spouting off about how black on black crime doesn't real.
At first you're laughing at how ridiculous the notion is but later you have that "Oh..." moment where you smoke a bowl and get all philosophical and think of the long term possible outcomes and implications.

I feel like an enemy combatant on that foreign soil when I see a picture of Lena Dunham. PTSD Confirmed. /s

Which is all it takes.
[–]LasherDeviance 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
But you can't blame it on anything but simple math. Not because the military purposely picks more white guys to go to the front lines.
If you make up 7 out of 10 people, if 5 are picked at random, the probability that all 5 will be like you is higher.
[–]yendorion 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I am not blaming it on anything but if you did the same argument could works as much for the counter argument but I'll digress, back up a second & read again what Lena Dunham said. Even if it were 1 in 10 would be enough to undo her statement, the rest only strengthens how wrong she is. It's not about proportions or probability but how there is no group that doesn't know what being under attack means.

“The other candidates [who are running against Hillary Clinton] are white men and they cannot understand, even if they can understand it intellectually, what it’s like to be under that kind of attack, and I’m so impressed by the way she [Hillary] continues to soldier forth,” Dunham said.

As much as I despise Lena Dunham and everything she stands for, I really hate it when we somehow manage the make this about the troops. It was really annoying when there was the whole campaign for what bravery actually meant when Caitlyn Jenner made her first appearance as a chick. For the record, I don't hate the troops, I'm an OIF/OEF vet. But this is not what that dipshit meant by attack.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
how people can read this and not think shes a pedophile is fucking amazing, you're deluding yourself hard because you think shes actually some kind of feminist:
"I shared a bed with my sister, Grace, until I was seventeen years old.
As she grew, I took to bribing her for her time and affection: one dollar in quarters if I could do her makeup like a “motorcycle chick.” Three pieces of candy if I could kiss her on the lips for five seconds. Whatever she wanted to watch on TV if she would just “relax on me.” Basically, anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl I was trying."
[–]FirstDimensionFilms 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sounds like "boys will be boys".
It's different when they do it.
[–]EricAllonde 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
OK, you're right. She was a young raper/molester.
So let's recap:
1) You tried to derail the topic with some unrelated bullshit about "raping and molesting".
2) When the guilt of your feminist hero was pointed out, you didn't like it and were triggered.
3) Meanwhile, it's still clear that Dunham is a spoilt & privileged white woman who's never faced any real challenges in her life, and yet she happily craps on people, specifically men, who've sacrificed far more than she ever will and contributed far more to their country than she could ever imagine.
So go cry somewhere else.

[–]SeerInTheWood -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Eh I don't like her but a picture of voluntary employment isn't the best response since she's almost certainly not referring to paid combat when she's talking about attacks on minorities. Maybe a picture of white men being attacked? Maybe in a situation where the attack isn't a scenario of mutual aggression? Prisons, bullying, child abuse, there are so many ignored scenarios where men are subjected to abuse and attack and less able to receive recognition about it, it seems lazy to showcase the most popular and glorified one. It doesn't really address what's being said or say anything positive about men.
[–]vijeno -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
She's completely right. Just a bit imprecise.
In reality, it's white, urban, cis, heterosexual, christian (but non-fundamentalist), well-educated, pro-feminism (but not exactly feminist), pro-choice (but not exactly anti-life), somewht leftist (but not too much), brown-eyed and brown-haired (but not long-haired), non-freckled males between 1.80m and 1.85m around 82.3kg, from 22 to 24 years of age who are single, have no kids and have a good job, drink socially, don't smoke, are slightly into yoga, omnivores and interested in art (but not the weird kind) who live in a european state with male-only conscription but a civil service option, who have absolutely no clue what it's like to be under attack.
So, the vast majority.
[+]eightzzzzzzzz -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The US military does the attacking most of the time. You're not 'under attack' if you invade another country and then they shoot back at you.

I haven't yet agreed with anything that Lena Dunham has had to say, but the odds that any white men posting in this thread know what it is to come under fire and/or become injured in service to their country are pretty fucking long. This post almost feels like stolen Valor, just for the piss-poor comparison.
[–]Odz2427 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

It seems like men are at least as likely to understand what being attacked is like than women. What was the context of the original post? Attacked in what way? In terms of violence in general, I think men are far more often attacked than women.
[–]Odz2427 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Correct
No it's not. She said WHITE MEN. No matter how many she's talking about, she white-washed (pardon the pun) all men in her statement. NO WHITE MEN know what it's like. The image of the soldiers proves that WRONG.
So the comparison is valid.
While I'm at it, let me tell you as a white man, I know all too well what it's like to be under attack. Both, physically and mentally. For her to dismiss that to push her agenda makes her a dolt. She has no right to do that, just to try and make her "plight" seem worse than mine.
