Wow, they're really looking to boost those FGM statistics.

[–]Eryemil 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah good luck with that. The campaigns against FGC, despite what you might hear from people that get their paychecks from this, are actually working. It is slowly decreasing.

[–]InWadeTooDeep 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that has more to do with FGM being illegal for decades and the number being miniscule to begin with.

[–]Eryemil 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's going down in countries where it is endemic. I wasn't referring to it's prevalence in developed countries at all.

[–]TheRedThrowAwayPill 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bingo!

This guy gets it.

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But even if that works it would only serve to provide a comparison. Lets assume a one in 100 women has piercings vs. how many men with circumcisions? FGM will go from something that you can overstate by not measuring it to being statistically insignificant.

[–]Mitthrawnuruodo1337 140 points141 points142 points 11 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

Does this mean that vaginal piercing is now illegal in the UK? So women are not able to express themselves in that way because of the anti-FGM campaign... I guess the matriarchy hurts women, too.

[–][deleted] 94 points95 points96 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Women can decide to get piercing, and it's their right and their bodies. BUT a piercer that actually does the piercing is guilty of genital mutilation.

You know, just like the sex negative feminists who would never say a woman isn't allowed to have piv sex, but will still claim any piv sex is rape?

[–]Daemonicus 71 points72 points73 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I can see it now...

Woman goes in to get piercing, gets refused, and then claims discrimination. If she gets it done, she claims sexual assault.

Win, win.

[–]Perk_i 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

But what if the person doing the piercing is also a woman? Wouldn't that make them both victims of the patriarchal society in which context the FGM took place?

[–]garblegarble12 35 points36 points37 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Investigation would be needed into the closest male authority figure - she may have a male boss, worst case scenario her father is to blame.

[–]m4tthew 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

thats win win win.

[–]PapayaMilk 29 points30 points31 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

It's only illegal "within an abusive context". I think this will do a good job at boosting the numbers of women presumed to be living with FGM. But it won't stop women getting pierced.

[–]babno 27 points28 points29 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So basically "Look at all these poor victims of FGM, give us money to fight it"

[–]loddfavne 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's for increasing the number of victims so that the government has to fund these organizations. Charity scamming.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its a great way to fudge statistics in your favour.

[–]Mitthrawnuruodo1337 24 points25 points26 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I need to get lessons from whoever thought this up then. That's so evil it's brilliant.

[–]rdesktop7 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Has anyone ever been forced to get a genital piercing?

[–]Coldbeam 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Some types of fgm are a ceremonial pin prick.

[–]rdesktop7 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Ehh, that doesn't sound right. A ceremonial pinprick is not GM.

Unless the needle is huge, and destroys nerves or something, a pinprick is not a mutilation. If there are no permanent function change, and there are not permanent cosmetic changes, it's not mutilated. I have had my hands punctured by many different sharp things that I have worked with over the years, they are not mutilated.

[–]Coldbeam 17 points18 points19 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You may not agree with the classification, but it is according to the World Health Organization. It's under type 4

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_mutilation#Classification

[–]rdesktop7 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ahh.

I see.

Well, you are correct, I do not agree with the classification, but it is defined as such by the WHO.

So, yeah. Conversation over.

TIL, thanks for that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I assume that's sarcasm?

[–]rdesktop7 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

no sarcasm here, what would be sarcastic in the previous comment? I learned something about the WHO's classifications.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why should we accept the WHO's classification when they're so obviously biased?

[–]PapayaMilk 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sure it has happened but I don't think it's common among people who practice FGM.

[–]fingerboxes 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

All vaginal piercings are, by definition, done in an abusive context. Anyone who is willing to let that happen to them has clearly internalized the patriarchy and their consent is clearly given under duress, even if they don't consciously realize it.

/s

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a way more rational position than "all male / female sex is rape."

And several well respected and widely taught feminists hold that view, so this is a non-controversial walk in the park.

[–]PapayaMilk 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But don't you dare infringe upon her right to express her sexuality through body art /s

(Only sarcastic because of double standard)

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] 41 points42 points43 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That appears to be what it means. Women can't decide to have piercings and men don't get a choice about circumcision. Welcome to equality.

[–]ARedthorn 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also worth noting- any studio that offers this piercing is now breaking the law.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. No this isn't what this is about.

This is only regarding vaginal piercing that is done in an abusive situation, but where consent was given CAN be considered FGM.

[–]mossbergman 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Look at not what is being stated, whose stating it. Listing piercing as mutilation, gives ammo to fem-nazi groups, who cite government statistics.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Completely agree with this. When I read the article I thought it was highly likely that these people are being included with the intent to inflate the statistics. It's like with the 1 in 4 stat where the definition of sexual assault was broadened out to include basically everyone.

I bet within 6 months there'll be articles citing these statistics and stating that we have an FGM epidemic.

[–]TheRealMouseRat 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the matriarchy backfired on them

[–]occupythekitchen 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points78 points 11 years ago (75 children) | Copy Link

It was a real eye opener when I told people I wasn't going to circumcise my son. Some people got angry (more so online) and others (in person) tried to talk me out of it. It was only my wife and my pediatrician that agreed with me.

[–]chocoboat 33 points34 points35 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How the fuck does someone get angry with you for choosing not to cut off part of your son's body? Like... what was the line of thinking? That's you're doing something harmful to him by NOT cutting pieces off?

[–]Mein_Tarnaccount 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Once you see feminism for the religion it is, it all makes sense. This guy went against the doctrine.

[–]kronox 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Circumcision has been ingrained into our (western) society. I was never a feminist but before I found this sub I was definitely emotional on this subject as I have been cut. I found it hard at first because I wanted to pretend that there was nothing wrong but after a while I realized how wrong I was.

[–]Mein_Tarnaccount 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Boys and men are literally walking around with the knowledge that they are not the masters of their own lives. You can say "fuck that" in your own life, if you make the decision to. But to put this on boys by default is just evil.

[–]walkonthebeach[S] 51 points52 points53 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well done.

I find it funny that they "tried to talk [you] out of it". i.e.: tried to talk you out of NOT mutilating your son's genitals!

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (64 children) | Copy Link

Out of curiosity, what were their reasons for being so shocked you weren't circumcising him? Are you jewish? Or do you live somewhere people genuinely believe it stops aids?

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points31 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Going to guess America, and that the reason was mostly "he'll look weird."

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 11 years ago (59 children) | Copy Link

No I am just a normal white American. My mother said he would feel out of place with other boys, my reply was that was to tell the other boys to stop looking at his penis. In the 1980s, circumcision peaked in America and has been declining. I think to more immigration than changing attitudes. Even my Asian side of the family wondered why I wouldn't do it. They said it is cleaner.

[–]JackBadass 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (58 children) | Copy Link

The cleaner argument is the weakest one I've heard. By that logic, we should be amputating a lot more than just the foreskin. Lop off the whole penis, and don't stop there. Feet get pretty dirty, too. It'd be a lot cleaner to chop of those, too.

[–]Matvalicious 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's the only argument some people can come up with. I usually just comment on why they don't pull out their fingernails then, so no dirt can get under it.

[–]Pepper-Fox 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The root of it is anti-masturbation but nobody will say it out loud.

[+]InWadeTooDeep -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (55 children) | Copy Link

You can't walk without feet.

[–]RussellLawliet 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

You can get blades.

[–]InWadeTooDeep -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Which are inferior to feet and you would have to clean anyway.

[–]RussellLawliet 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I dunno about inferior. There's a reason blade runners can't compete in the normal Olympics.

[–]InWadeTooDeep -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Is it because they can't feel things with their toes? because that's one of the things I use my feet for. How many guesses do I have?

[–]RussellLawliet 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's because you can run a lot faster with them.

[–]aPseudonymPho 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Which are inferior to feet and you would have to clean anyway.

The irony of your own comment went right over your head didn't it?

[–]InWadeTooDeep -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Possibly...would you mind clarifying?

[–]aPseudonymPho 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

The circumcised penis is inferior to the intact penis (in the strictest of technical senses, obviously circumcised penises still "work" per se) and needs to be cleaned regardless of the fact they're circumcised (despite the truly asinine hygiene arguments). It's literally no different than the example given, and yet you rebutted it with what was actually a parallel to the argument you were trying to dispel, all while being completely oblivious to how you've made a point against yourself.

[–]Niketi 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women have much greater hygiene concerns in that department than men do. If we're lopping bits off on ridiculous justifications of hygiene, women should be first in line.

[–]Endless_Summer 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

[–]AustNerevar 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

[–]AKA_Squanchy 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Just like the vaccination issue, non-medical-educated people think they know better than DOCTORS. People that studied in college, then post, then medical school instead of partying and passing.

TL;DR stupid people think they're smarter than they are.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The favorite argument I made was that the foreskin has some of the most sensitive nerve endings on the entire penis. I told people I want my son to have a good time when he is older.

[–]aPseudonymPho 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Do you have any idea how often doctors are wrong?

Having the letters MD in front of your name doesn't mean you have encyclopedia scientific knowledge about the human body. It means you worked hard, studied in college, then past med school by studying instead of partying.

I'm not saying ALL doctors are wrong, I'm saying all doctors are wrong some of the time because they're human, and it is dangerous to just hand over authority like that without any criticism from yourself.

[–]AKA_Squanchy 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Of course doctors are wrong, the body is an incredibly complex machine, and you have your quacks out there, too. But your average person has no idea how the body works, how vaccines work, how medicine actually works, or shoot, even how proper nutrition works! Doctors are much more informed on all of the issues that deal with your health and body and they should continue studying and reading medical journals to stay current. Just like you [likely] wouldn't rebuild the engine in your car if it broke, you'd take it to a mechanic that knows what they're doing. You wouldn't pray that your car got better, you wouldn't try homeopathic healing on your car, you'd take it in, have it diagnosed and fixed by someone who hopefully knows what they're doing because you chose a mechanic that you feel you can trust. Especially when it comes to chopping off a part of my penis, never go to a mechanic for that.

[–]aPseudonymPho 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The reason for my commenting is that I've seen and dealt with your exact comment hundreds of times, as a justification for circumcision as an ethically and medically sound procedure. In fact that is exactly why I was circumcised;

"The doctor said its right and the best option"

It is a classic example of medicine being tainted by culture, and exactly why healthy skepticism in a patient is good for the patient themselves, and also for the medical industry.

If the medical professional cannot prove their professional opinion, then it is just an opinion like any other. The assumption is that them being a professional, should make the task of proving their expertise simple.

[–]Coldbeam 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Redefining terms to make it seem like there is more prevalence of a crime that is viewed as having only female victims. This seems familiar somehow... Oh right! Rape on college campuses. Fucking despicable, the lot of them.

Which ones? Be specific. Have you any evidence that this actually happens?

[–]RavenousPonies 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]PrincessGary 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I've never ever seen anyone with a piercing down there that was done to a child. No reputable piercer would do them, and a majority of the time, it increases sexual pleasure, or does nothing at all, and isn't that opposite of what FGM is about anyway?
Either way, it's fucking dumb.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've heard of young teenagers using fake IDs to get pierced (and the piercer being charged with sexual assault) but I've never heard of anyone of any age being forced to do it.

Piercings can cause nerve damage or infections, so they're not consequence free. FGM doesn't imply an intention, it's purely a physical description.

[–]Lord_ThunderCunt 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even if you ignore the rampant, unchecked, male mutilation in western countries, this is some fucked up shit.

[–]Arby01 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Since women can't legally consent to pretty much anything, they clearly need the same protections as children, even from their own decisions.

Not just Jewish. The ritual has developed, seemingly independently, in aboriginal Australia and much of Africa and the Middle East. It is highly unlikely that Jews developed the practice without a precursor, far more likely that, like almost everything else in that religion, it was borrowed from earlier tribal practices.

"Independently" as used by me above, refers to to Aboriginal Australia and the other areas listed. It does not mean that the Jewish practice was independent of The Middle East and Africa. As is evident from the clause "It is highly unlikely that Jews developed the practice without a precursor."

Muslim and Jewish parents are gonna circumcise their boys and we wont give a shit at all about this topic.

However, as for grown women piercing themselves being classified as FGM ... that sounds like it will be politically used to make it into a talking point when it actually isn't.

Be sure to explain to any of your children that you removed 40% of the nerves on their penis because you care about them so much.

That's good, I'm glad people like you are still mutilating children in the name of a God.

Surely your ethnic pride will absolve any actual damage to their body, since tradition knows best! Besides, women should always sit on one side of the synagogue, should generally be separated from men, should be removed from mass media and censored out, sex should be between a sheet, etc. right?

If these women are victims, it's only of their own stupidity. They did this to themselves. If they later regret their decision, then that only makes MGM even worse. If a woman can regret a choice she made to alter her body as a legal adult, then how can parents be qualified to alter their newborn son's body when he has his whole life ahead of him?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is no such piercing as a vaginal piercing.

They are pierced via clit, clit hood or labia.

Apart from Congress voting themselves backpay during the debt ceiling deadlock, I struggle to think of a more obvious and in the open agenda-cooking in recent memory.

This is oddly reminiscent of how Indian people are counted here in the SF tech world. They are sometimes counted as "People of Color" and "minorities", but then also sometimes not, really just depending on what point someone is trying to substantiate.

Female genital mutilation. It's a moral panic which blew up when feminist anthropologists discovered that some women (mostly in africa) have their genitals ritually altered.

It's a men's rights issue because similar procedures performed on men are completely ignored while the women's issue is inflated as much as humanly possible to provide evidence of a patriarchy.

Sorry I'm a little hungover and I'm scanning but I had a question to ask a while ago and I think this is a good place to ask. Why is it still okay to have your child circumcised? They have no idea what is happening (or very little). Its not like you can get them permanently tattooed but you're allowed to have part of their genitals removed forever

[–]aPseudonymPho 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because;

  1. It is tremendously socially and culturally normalized in the west, to the point where it is now an aspect of identity
  2. It has been retroactively justified with hundreds of different reasons throughout the course of history (for example, it was previously thought to cure polio)
  3. It is a procedure which generates a fair amount of money being performed.

If you're thinking that these are less than stellar reasons, you're correct.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Ironically, a lot of people who'd circumcise their kids would lose their shit if said kid got a tattoo. No doubt they'd lecture him about the permanence of his decision, and that he might regret the alteration he's made to his body.

[–]ToReykjavik 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I may be HORRIBLY misinformed but aren't Jews banned from Jewish cemetaries if they have tattoos? Like they can't be buried there if they have them? But they're circumcised too

That is true. It's pretty funny when you think about it. "You're not allowed to disfigure yourself, only the disfigurements we force upon you when you're too young to object are permitted" Kind of hypocritical.

people really need to get the concept into their heads, if a person wants to mutilate themself, or pay someone else to do it, and they're over the age of consent, they should be free to do whatever the hell they want. but to cut off or pierce or mutilate in any way the body of a person who is underage and can't consent to it is morally wrong. that's all the law needs to say. it can be gender neutral and fair and then that's it, case closed, anyone who does it goes to prison.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]ShutupPussy 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

but do you think it's appropriate to still call it mutilation? Does consent change the description?

[–]walkonthebeach[S] 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

One could call it that yourself; but you might not say that to the person who has had it done.

You could argue that tattoos are multination, or even ear piercings.

[–]ShutupPussy -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I guess I am taking this to a side discussion, but what im getting at is asking if its appropriate? Mutilation is a pretty horrendous term with hugely negative connotations. I understand many MRAs feel very strongly about circumcision but I question whether their decries of mutilation is appropriate, since the description is against the act and not the lack of consent. I get the issue for MRAs is the lack of consent and not so much the act itself but the characterization of it comes off as intentionally biased in it's vilification.

[–]Black_caped_man 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I still consider it mutilation even if done voluntarily. Why? well because it's still amputation of a significant amount of healthy bodily tissue. Tissue that we know have a special function, tissue that has a great deal of erogenous sensation.

If a woman voluntarily had a cliterectomy is it still mutilation?

The thing is that when it's consensual it's not mutilation of the person per se, but more of a mutilation of the actual body part.

A piercing can be easily removed and the hole will for the most part pretty much heal itself.

Sadly the term mutilation carries a lot of emotional connotations with a lot of people and it's by it's definition a rather subjective term.

The thing is that what fully informed consenting adults do is not really any of my business. What people do to infants and children who don't consent however, should be everyones business.

[–]Endless_Summer 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Non consensual removal of part of a person's genitals with permanent consequences definitely, always, completely qualifies as mutilation.

[–]luxury_banana 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is absolutely appropriate to call it mutilation as it removes function and sensation permanently, but if you're a consenting adult and you choose to have it done then it's your life. Unfortunately it seems very few get that choice. I sure as hell didn't.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I call it mutilation because it is the act of mutilating a body part. It's very simple and not a question of opinion or point of view. That's what the word means.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Mutilation: to injure, disfigure, or make imperfect by removing or irreparably damaging parts

circumcision he is still mutilated?

Yes, circumcision is always mutilation. An adult can choose to be mutilated, as it is her/his own body. Parents can choose to mutilate their children without their consent when it is medically necessary (amputation of cancerous limb, for example), however circumcision doesn't have enough of a medical benefit, IMO, to justify mutilation of the genitals without the consent of the child.

I believe the U.S. government has the power to make infant/child circumcision illegal and should use this power to remove this barbaric practice from our country.

[–]ShutupPussy 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Should that include making ear piercing illegal for children?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm going to explain my reasoning about this. I'll preface by saying that I'm a parent of two kids, girl (7) and boy (2) and that my boy is intact.

I think it is morally wrong for parents to dick around with their children's bodies without compelling medical reasons and without their consent.

This includes, FGM, MGM, piercings etc.

Legally I think the government should make MGM illegal just like it made FGM illegal. Getting the ear lobes (an entirely useless piece of tissue) pierced (a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure) should remain legal although I maintain doing so is morally wrong.

We are rational human beings who can characterize actions (circumcision vs. piercing) and threat the legality of each separately.

Yup. I'm circumcised, will circumcise my son, and I don't believe it's genital mutilation or in a lot of the sensationalist media on the subject. But i get the idea that MR, or at least all the people trolling this thread, are savagely against circumcision, biasing the issue here.

The article is about infantalizing women in the UK. While at the bottom they address the difference between adult women choosing and 'some' children that can't, the issue of the article is vastly about adult women.

To link this to genital mutilation on either side is sensationalistic. But I guess if you need the karma you got it.

Now let the downvoting commence because I have been circumcised and have an opinion.

Edit - told ya about the downvotes. I stated an opinion, didn't bash anyone, and took a non-inflammatory stance. Downvoted and hated on in comments. [–]aPseudonymPho 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What could you prefer? Crush, slice, tear? Those are perfectly accurate to the procedure, since some crush the foreskin tissue until it necrotizes, and some slice it away. All circumcision procedures must tear the foreskin from the glans penis first, as they are fused until puberty.

I'm certainly happy to stick with those descriptors instead, as you're correct there isn't any actual "penis to cutting board butcher knife comes down" chopping that is done.

I've never had any sexual dysfunction or felt like I was missing anything, I never had phimosis or a concern about it, culturally all the men that I've seen (regardless of source) were circumcised so I never felt like I didn't fit in. Anecdotally, I've brought this up among friends, family and in social scenarios and the vast majority of them are circumcised or prefer circumcised men - in fact one woman went so far as to tell a story about how she was turned off the first time she saw an un-cut man because she "wasn't prepared for that." But ALL of them don't yell, scream, shout, or decry anyone else for having their opinion. I do believe that the extra skin is partially vestigial, and the only argument people have against that is that it contains nerve endings - but so does the appendix so that doesn't sway me much.

Beyond all of that personal experience and belief that I'm about to get reamed for, there's also information out there that goes back and forth (heh) on the positives and negatives

AAP has said that health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks - just not enough to recommend universal circumcision.

Also, it's philanthropic - the majority of artificial skin for burn victims is derived from circumcision.

I'm sure the haters have all their evidence to throw my way, but it doesn't affect my opinion. It's where I am and how I got here, and I want my child to have the same life I had.

Edit - oh yeah, here's something you can scream about: if you don't have a penis then you don't know what it's like, and your opinion is entirely anecdotal. The opinion of men in this argument should always have more weight because they have the experience that goes along with it.

[–]aPseudonymPho 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

See? This is a much more even handed and reasoned response. I agree with exactly 0% of what you said, but this is truly

[stating] an opinion, [without] bashing anyone

Unlike your other post.

I do believe that the extra skin is partially vestigial, and the only argument people have against that is that it contains nerve endings - but so does the appendix so that doesn't sway me much.

It doesn't really matter what you "believe" here. The skin is not vestigial, and neither is the appendix (although the appendix is very nearly vestigial, since it is suspected to have been primarily necessary for digestion of plant materials when hominids were much more like primates). The appendix helps maintain the natural balance of microbes in the GI tract. Additionally the appendix does not have nerves in the same way that the foreskin does, so that is a really poor example.

The nerve endings in the foreskin are directly related to its function, in the same way that the cone and rod cells in your eyes are directly related to sight. The penis is meant to feel, the eyes are meant to see, and the cellular structures that comprise them reflect this perfectly. That is a fundamental concept in biology, that form follows function, and there are innumerable examples of this.

so that doesn't sway me much.

So here's a question then, what would sway you? What would it take for you to say, "Hey, maybe this isn't something I should do to my children", and why is that (whatever it may be) the only thing that sways you?

[–]StrangeBedfellows -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I would like to say "nothing would" but that's not true. A scholarly article vetted by a breadth of peers that proves without any question that cutting off foreskin has absolutely no medical benefit, and causes lasting harm.

The corollary of course is that I have no lasting harm, so I can't imagine that the issue is as grave as all this ranting

[–]aPseudonymPho 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A scholarly article vetted by a breadth of peers that proves without any question that cutting off foreskin has absolutely no medical benefit, and causes lasting harm.

There are literally hundreds of these kinds of papers and studies available, so obviously this isn't what you actually need to be convinced. There is always lasting harm caused by removal of a body part, that is uncontested. What is up for debate is whether the harm caused is justified by a net positive outcome elsewhere. North American medical professionals don't think it does (as admitted several times by both the AAP and the CDC), but believe that the harm is not sufficient to overcome the cultural and religious imperatives. That is a very different argument altogether.

If you suffer a traumatic injury and must have your leg amputated, that is going to cause lasting harm. However if the alternative is to die, then obviously losing the leg is a better option.

Thus we run into the root of your opinion. It has nothing to do with evidence not being available that circumcision is both unnecessary and harmful as that is wildly abundant. It seems that you are asking to be convinced that your own life experience is false (something people will not willingly give up even if it is true), and that your culture is wrong. I don't think anyone is going to be able to convince you of those things.

...grave as all this ranting

The issue is not grave in magnitude, it is grave in nature. It would likely be more beneficial and less risky and damaging to have fingernails removed at birth. They cause a host of health problems and issues, and really only become defective. This is not performed, because the nature of such a procedure is unethical, which is exactly the issue with performing any kind of surgery without medical necessity.

The American Academy of Pediatrics...

Oh dear oh dear…

The American Academy of Pediatrics is a trade organisation, and exists for the promotion of its members - paediatric doctors. It is not, and never will be, a patient advocacy group.

The AAP members make millions of dollars from circumcision infant baby boys, and millions more from selling the amputated foreskins for medical research and cosmetics:

http://www.foreskin.org/f4sale.htm

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

― Upton Sinclair, I, Candidate for Governor: And How I Got Licked

Many other sane pediatric association from around the world has declared the AAP's stance to be against all sane, rational analysis.

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2013/03/12/peds.2012-2896.full.pdf+html

The British Medical Journal also published an extensive critique:

http://blogs.bmj.com/medical-ethics/2013/03/19/journal-of-medical-ethics-special-issue-on-circumcision/?q=w_jme_blog_sidetab

Also the Journal of Medical Ethics:

http://jme.bmj.com/content/early/2013/03/18/medethics-2013-101346.abstract

The Danish Society of Family Physicians has even declared male "circumcision" to be genital mutilation. Other countries in Europe will soon follow:

“The National Board of Health has sent Guidelines Regarding Circumcision of Boys into hearing. DSAM (Danish Society of Family Physicians) has debated the issue and agreed that circumcision may only be performed when medical indication is present. Circumcision in the absence of a medical indication is mutilation.”

Plus, the circumcision policy committee of the APP had many members with a conflict of interest, not least because of their religious belief in the requirement by their God to have their sons' penises mutilated as a sign of their devotion and love.

These people are terrified that the general public is going to get wise to this child-abuse and ban it.

Dr. Andrew Freedman was one of the members of the committee, and was asked:

"Do you have a son and, if so, did you have him circumcised?"

"Yes, I do. I circumcised him myself on my parents’ kitchen table on the eighth day of his life. But I did it for religious, not medical reasons. I did it because I had 3,000 years of ancestors looking over my shoulder."

http://www.thejewishweek.com/features/new-york-minute/fleshing-out-change-circumcision

Here is the AAP policy statement. Can you please point me to the section where there task force members state their "conflicts of interest"? (Hint: you won't find it because it doesn't exist):

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2012/08/22/peds.2012-1989.full.pdf+html

Note that as three of the task force members were women; and the rest men all born before 1980, there is a very high degree of certainty that none of them possess a male foreskin.

In addition, at least four of them subscribe to a set of theological beliefs that require them to mutilate the genitals of their infant sons. And one of whom (as detailed previously) did so on his kitchen table. Not only is this in violation of the AAP’s code of bioethics prohibiting physicians from conducting surgery on family members (let alone in non-sterile environments), it also provides additional evidence of a pro-circumcision bias among the hand-picked task force members.

These people will mutilate your penis just because they think it pleases their sky-god. Forget about "medical benefits".

And recently, Steven Svoboda, a Harvard educated lawyer who runs "Attorneys for the rights of the child", debated two of the AAPs "Taskforce on Circumcision" members: Michael Brady, M.D. and Douglas Diekema, M.D.:

"Asked if people present could explain the functions of the foreskin Brady said, “I don't think anybody knows the functions of the foreskin,” then reiterated, in nearly identical words, “Nobody knows the functions of the foreskin.” I noted that there was not a word about the functions of the foreskin in the 2012 AAP report, and asked, shouldn't we know something about the functions of the healthy body part that is being removed?"

Tellingly, the AAP pamphlet "Care of the Uncircumcised Penis", used to contain this information:

"The glans at birth is delicate and easily irritated by urine and feces. The foreskin shields the glans; with circumcision, this protection is lost. In such cases, the glans and especially the urinary opening may become irritated or infected, causing ulcers, meatitis, and meatal stenosis. Such problems virtually never occur in uncircumcised penises. The foreskin protects the glans throughout life".

But this was deleted in the 1996 reprint, and despite numerous letters to the editors, no explanation was ever given as to why it was removed. Of course the reason is obvious: they want to deny that the male foreskin has any function at all, so they can continue to mutilate infant boys.

http://www.circumcision.org/pamphlet.htm

The foreskin is not "just a little bit of skin." The foreskin is a complex, double-layered fold of flesh, laden in thousands of nerves and blood vessels. Keep in mind that as a child grows into a man, his foreskin grows too; it isn't so little by the time the child is an adult. And adult foreskin can be from 12 to 15 square inches in size.

The foreskin is not a birth defect.

Neither is it a congenital deformity or genetic anomaly akin to a 6th finger or a cleft.

Neither is it a medical condition like a ruptured appendix or diseased gall bladder.

Neither is it a dead part of the body, like the umbilical cord, hair, or fingernails.

The foreskin is not "extra skin." The foreskin is normal, natural, healthy, functioning tissue, with which all boys are born; it is as intrinsic to male genitalia as labia are to female genitalia.

Unless there is a medical or clinical indication, the circumcision of a healthy, non-consenting individual is a deliberate wound; it is the destruction of normal, healthy tissue, the permanent disfigurement of normal, healthy organs, and by very definition, infant genital mutilation, and a violation of the most basic of human rights.

Genital mutilation, whether it be wrapped in culture, religion or “research” is still genital mutilation, and it needs to stop NOW.

Actually I took a lot of good stuff out of his argument. I also realized that we have diametrically opposed views. I think my real issue is the stark polarization to the argument. The article here is an example, the issue is treating all women like chosen, but that went to female genital mutilation and the headline interposed circumcision to at least compare the issues by proximity. That's like saying that piercing a girls ears before her majority is also mutilation. How many young girls do you see with piercings?

What it comes down to, for me as I won't speak in broad strokes like a lot of the arguments seem to be doing, is that I have lived this way happily. To say that I was "mutilated" is insulting to me, and my family, and my beliefs. I generally don't engage in this discussion though because of that polarization - there is no acceptance of a person's stance for circumcision - to have the stance means that I'm retarded, a moron, etcetc whatever else that rude guy was calling me (at least I'm assuming it was a guy, who was not circumcised, elected to be, and regretted it)

The issue, the human issue as I see it, is that no-one can have this conversation without throwing insults. I tried it earlier in this thread and it degraded immediately into it. Until there can be a calm conversation then you Can Not have a convincing argument. After all, who wants to listen to someone tell them they are wrong, are mutilated, and are morons?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I'm sure the haters have all their evidence to throw my way, but it doesn't affect my opinion

Well this just sums it all up. There IS plenty of evidence about circumcision, that's been posted here countless times, so many times that you having not read it is just embarrassing for you at this point.

The reason family and friends in social circumstances prefer, or claim to prefer, circumcised penises is because that's what they know and that's what they're used to. The reason you don't feel like you're missing anything is because you don't know what it's like to have to miss it. If you grew up without a father, and never knew that people had fathers, you wouldn't miss yours. Does this mean your life is better without one?

Go to Europe and ask girls if a non-circumcised penis turns them off and see what your answer is. And is it really up to a woman's aesthetic preference to decide if a child's penis should be mutilated? Maybe we should examine baby female vaginas at birth and perform surgery on them until they are aesthetically pleasing to whatever the current consensus on vaginas is.

Your philanthropic argument is just so absurd I'm not even going there.

At the end of the day the foreskin is there and serves a purpose. It contains nerve endings, it provides protection and a covering for the glans, lubrication, and more sexual stimulation for the man. The myth that is continued that circumcision is for better health is just that, a myth. If a boy wants to have himself circumcised when he's old enough to consent, that's his choice, but to leave the choice up to someone else is just absolutely absurd.

For the record, I didn't downvote you, and even if I had, it would be completely justified as your comment contributes nothing to the discussion. That is exactly what downvoting is for, to bury comments which contribute nothing to a healthy discussion.

What you posted, was a handful of paragraphs masturbating your ego by showing how much of a rebel you are for

  1. Calling out the anti-circumcision stance of /r/mensrights, and

  2. for having an opinion that differs from that status quo.

You only posted to get a pat on the back from others who happen to feel the same as you, and to feel vindicated and justified for your opinions which (I assume regularly) are torn down here.

If you actually wanted a discussion, you might have tried asking a question, which is an invitation for discourse. Instead you posted the following;

I'm circumcised, will circumcise my son

A statement right off the bat that you know will inflame those around you, just to set the stage and give the proper tone.

I don't believe it's genital mutilation

See above

i get the idea that MR, or at least all the people trolling this thread

Labelling anyone who disagrees with you a troll, excellent for discussion.

The article is about infantilizing women in the UK. While at the bottom they address the difference between adult women choosing and 'some' children that can't, the issue of the article is vastly about adult women.3 To link this to genital mutilation on either side is sensationalistic. But I guess if you need the karma you got it.

I actually agree with you here. You should've posted just this and that would've been a perfectly reasonable response to this thread. I guess you just love to be disliked so much, you couldn't help but toss in your points about circumcision huh?

Now let the downvoting commence

Finally the good ol' "I know I'll be downvoted for this", to close everything out. Its not like anyone has ever done that before, when they basically wanted something to edit back into their post after showing how right they were. Kind of like...

Edit - told ya about the downvotes. I stated an opinion, didn't bash anyone, and took a non-inflammatory stance.

Actually you did the exact opposite. You posted an inflammatory stance in your having outright stated that you intend to circumcise your future son, in what you already know to be an anti-circumcision subreddit. Had you posted a reason for why you plan to circumcise, that would actually invite discussion and open the door for people to challenge you on that opinion, which I can assume is exactly why you didnt list a reason.

Then you go on to call everyone in this thread trolls, and talk about a rampant bias (while not acknowledging your own biases) in the community, before hiding behind the downvote shield we've all come to know and love.

because I have been circumcised and have an opinion.

Actually you were downvoted for being a douche, as highlighted above, and for playing the persecution downvote card as a means to have something to be "correct" about. But hey, whatever helps you get to sleep at night.

As long as I'm not raining on your parade you should respect my decision

Actually you are raining on my parade, as someone whom is circumcised and is disgusted by it immensely. Maybe you should respect my body (and the body of your hypothetical son) and let them make the choice for themselves. Or is the respect for your decision more important than the respect for a persons own being? You can't have it both ways.

...and continues to be based in either scientific judgement (AAP among others) or religious and personal beliefs

Emphasis mine. That is exactly the problem. Personal and religious beliefs, should not be inflicted upon people in a permanent, irreversible fashion. If you disagree, then I assume you also believe that religiously grounded genital cutting of young and infant girls is justifiable, correct?

[–]StrangeBedfellows 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You must be right, I'll go stop trying to make decisions for my children that I believe are in their best interest.

As someone who has been circumcised, your opinion has limited validity in that you do not know what you are missing.

You say you didn't bash anyone, you have every intention of doing something far worse to your son.

I'm not saying that that's how it should be. I'm saying that's my opinion, and people should have the choice to do that or not. Parents are allowed to make decisions for most everything when it comes to children, and this is no different. It doesn't hurt anyone, it's just an aesthetic choice.

[–]Arby01 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

. Parents are allowed to make decisions for most everything when it comes to children, and this is no different. It doesn't hurt anyone, it's just an aesthetic choice.

really, so you are good with FGM too then, since parents can make that choice for their kids?

[+]SirGingerBeard -12 points-11 points-10 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What does that mean?

[–]Arby01 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It means that I am assuming:

Parents are allowed to make decisions for most everything when it comes to children, and this is no different. It doesn't hurt anyone, it's just an aesthetic choice.

Means that you feel circumcision is an acceptable choice for a parent to make. So you should have no problem when it is female circumcision either, yes?

[+]SirGingerBeard -10 points-9 points-8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I meant what does FGM mean.. And people are free to make their own decisions. Parents make decisions for their children. We just have to deal and make the decisions we feel is right.

The United States was formed with the belief that anyone is free to make their own decisions, regardless of the public opinion of it.

Yes, I do think they're free to make that choice, because if they aren't then people like you have no more of a right to make a decision for your children.

Whether or not it's acceptable is irrelevant. Just like peaceful protests are allowed, regardless of what's being protested, these decisions should be allowed to be made, regardless of public opinion.

To keep this from coming up as a counter argument, I'm going to address it: Making the choice to not have your child vaccinated it putting the public in danger, at large. Choosing to circumcise your son or daughter does not put the public in danger.

[–]nick012000 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I meant what does FGM mean

"Female Genital Mutilation", AKA female circumcision.

[–]aPseudonymPho 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually it hurts a lot of people, particularly those who 1. Don't want it, and 2. Who suffer complications from it. Do you think those people (with significant complications) just got what they deserved when they had their penis destroyed at 24 hours old just because you happened to be fine? Or is this "no one" you're talking about reserved only for people you agree with?

[–]James2117 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A foreskin isn't a birth defect, I was circumcised at birth and I would have never wanted to lose my foreskin yet I didn't have a choice because I was born in the United States

You can always have the procedure done in adulthood, unfortunately it is non reversible, that's why it should not be a decision for the mother/parents

Who ever thought my parents Should be able to make decisions about my penis anyways?

[–]mikesteane 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

People making choices for themselves and their children? It's one or the other: if your parents have you cut, you have no choice. Does your viewpoint also apply to female genital mutilation and if not, why not?

[–]Endless_Summer 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women can make choices for children, so men should be able to make choices for women. No problem here.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm all for people making decisions for themselves. You probably wouldn't want it any other way if you'd been allowed the choice. You presumably weren't, though.

[+]JFConz -14 points-13 points-12 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I hate this argument. Hate it. Not the piercings are mutilation, that is just absurd. Pierce your own vagina with consent, woogoo to you, not mutilation, pierce someone else's without their consent, yea then I would say that is mutilation. Rather... The removal of a small strip of flesh at the end of a penis is not on the same order of magnitude as the removal of an entire clitoris or set of labia. For the record, before anyone jumps on me for hating men or something, I am a person with a penis. I do not have a foreskin, and if I had had one during my teenage years, with how much I was showering then, I probably would have had an excess of dick-cheese.
Now wait, I implied that having a foreskin would somehow make me dirtier, that's not fair! To me, the foreskin has been in the same group of body parts the appendix belongs in. Whatever it was supposed to do for me, it doesn't and I get by just fine. It would have just been there collecting lint during my week-long showerless binges. I am dirty, not foreskins.
But wait, there's more! The removal of the clit or labez in a genital mutilation case is motivated usually by religion, to reduce the pleasure of a woman by removing the tidbits that feel great. Any guy here consider his foreskin to be his primary erogenous zone? 'Cause I prefer the head of my dick, which is always free from interference from my long-lost foreskin. We remove foreskins as a means of ensuring a higher level of minimum cleanliness and studies show reduced rates in the transfer of STIs.
Maybe you wish you had your foreskin back and you think your parents are totally lame for making that choice for you, I hear you dude, but there's no going back. I'm sure your parents didn't make that choice because it seemed fun to them. Maybe intentions don't count for a lot to you, and that's cool too, but the removal of foreskin for hygienic (psh, mostly cosmetic in this age) hardly compares to the removal of large (relatively) components of the female sex organs. To make this comparison as if it were valid is to dismiss the hell some women have gone through. Let me remind you that most FGM occur long after the brain has set up camp and started being aware and conscious, I lost my foreskin before my earliest memory. I lost my foreskin like my pa before him and I chose to have my sons removed. Even with it removed, cleaning his little dick off when he's filled his diaper to capacity with shit-pudding is a delicate hassle. A foreskin would only make my job harder, not that that was the reason I decided for it.

CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the importance of the foreskin for penile sensitivity, overall sexual satisfaction, and penile functioning. Furthermore, this study shows that a higher percentage of circumcised men experience discomfort or pain and unusual sensations as compared with the uncircumcised population.

CONCLUSIONS:Circumcision was associated with frequent orgasm difficulties in Danish men and with a range of frequent sexual difficulties in women, notably orgasm difficulties, dyspareunia and a sense of incomplete sexual needs fulfilment.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17155977

CONCLUSION: There was a decrease in masturbatory pleasure and sexual enjoyment after circumcision, indicating that adult circumcision adversely affects sexual function in many men, possibly because of complications of the surgery and a loss of nerve endings.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17378847

CONCLUSIONS:The glans of the circumcised penis is less sensitive to fine touch than the glans of the uncircumcised penis. The transitional region from the external to the internal prepuce is the most sensitive region of the uncircumcised penis and more sensitive than the most sensitive region of the circumcised penis. Circumcision ablates the most sensitive parts of the penis.

Thanks for actually bringing some literature to the table. I'm not trying to say everyone should be circumcised, and it seems the doctor I've spoken to about it really only made the points about HIV transmission rates, which you've provided a claim against. It does not make any sense to me that a penis with a little less flesh transmit disease any less.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. With a normal penis, you clean what you see. How is it any "cleaner" to have to keep shit and piss away from a wound on the penis?

Maybe you wish you had your foreskin back and you think your parents are totally lame for making that choice for you, I hear you dude, but there's no going back.

Give it a couple years. Regenerative medicine has already advanced enough to replicate organs larger and more complex than a foreskin. It's just a matter of time. Foregen's working on it already, and is finally about to launch their Kickstarter campaign next Monday. They've already succeeded in regrowing animal foreskins in a laboratory setting and will experiment on human tissue as soon as they can legally obtain it, from what I've heard.
