I’m a 40-something man, divorced after a long marriage (nearly two decades). I didn’t want the divorce. I loved my wife deeply and still do.

I haven’t seen her or spoken to her since late May of last year.

What I’m struggling with isn’t anger — it’s loss. I didn’t just lose my wife. I lost her family, who I loved and considered my own. I lost the home we worked our entire adult lives to build. I lost the life I thought I was living toward.

I’m functioning. I work. I train. I handle my responsibilities. But internally, I feel untethered. I don’t know which direction is mine anymore.

People around me keep encouraging me to “get back out there.” I’ve talked with a few women, but it all feels hollow. Not because I’m idealizing my ex — it just feels premature and empty. I don’t enjoy the dating pool or dating culture, and I don’t want to use people as distractions.

I’m trying to understand how to move forward without becoming bitter, numb, or someone I don’t recognize — and without pretending this loss didn’t matter.

For men who didn’t want their divorce:

What actually helped?

Did you take time away from dating, or force yourself through it?

How did you rebuild direction and purpose?

What did healing realistically look like?

I’m not looking for clichés. I’m looking for real experiences from men who’ve walked this road and found stable ground again.
