Also, male lurkers, CHANGE YOUR DAMN TOOTHBRUSH EVERY 3 MONTHS.
I was in a relationship with a guy who had the same toothbrush for FIVE. FUCKING. YEARS. And yes, he had nasty teeth and smelly breath.
I begged him to throw it out and get a new one but he insisted he liked it and it had "sentimental value" (ugh, I cringe at the shit I put up with back when I was a pickme)
I bought him a new toothbrush and he refused to use it. We had a fight about it where he gaslit and shifted the blame onto me so on my way out I used his bathroom, put his nasty worn out toothbrush in my purse, then threw it out in the dumpster behind his apartment complex.

Omg the memory!! 1st time at a guys place and his toothbrush looked so sad so I told him he needed to replace. He did, right then and there, from a package I didn’t look to closely at. Next time, like a week later that “new” toothbrush looked just as bad as the one before!! I was like WTF? He told me he bought them at the dollar store. I’m flabbergasted. There are some things you just shouldn’t buy at the dollar store and toothbrushes are one of them. He was making decent money and saving up for a house. I just don’t understand their “logic” -_-
[–]PanzramsTransAmFDS Newbie14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Was it a Care Bears toothbrush from his childhood??? Sentimental value for a toothbrush. I can’t.
[–]myousernameRuthless Strategist13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Apparently he bought it in another country while travelling. I told him if that's your only memento when you backpacked around Europe then put it in a "memories box" or something, no need to keep using it every day.
In hindsight tho the whole "sentimental value" thing was bullshit. He was just manipulating the fact that I'm generally a pretty sensitive and understanding person (or, was anyways). It was just an excuse he thought I would buy.
[–]ethnicallyabiguousFDS Newbie26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You should’ve let him keep the toothbrush. Who cares if his teeth fall out.
Also. I’ve taken a toothbrush or two and scrubbed the toilet bowl with it on the way out of a relationship. I’ve got no more fuck bucks in my first national bank of fucks account.
[–]myousernameRuthless Strategist26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Throwing it out was like an act of defiance. Felt very cathartic. This was many years ago, I was dating a guy 7 years older than me when I was I was in my early 20s. It was like saying "fuck you, you can't control me"
Using it to clean the toilet bowl is too far for me personally, although I'm sure it wouldn't have made much of a difference given how nasty his mouth already was 😂
[–]ethnicallyabiguousFDS Newbie1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men are too comfortable with burdening women with their problems.
Yes, wtf is up with this? I've lost track of how many men choose a girlfriend over therapy and then dump all their emotional constipation on the girlfriend. It's such a common phenomenon that Harper's Bazaar even wrote an article about it.
[–]Sea_SoilFDS Newbie23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You should actually wait at least 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth. Otherwise you are just rubbing the acids into your enamel and breaking it down!
[–]ydoiexistlolidkFDS Newbie11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Same with if you've just been sick, rinse your mouth out first as well.
[–]QuodpotFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Swishing your mouth with water mixed with a bit of baking soda also helps neutralize the acid from throwing up

I agree with the post, but the comments - y’all shower twice a day? Am I just gross for once a day?
Edit: FYI I’m a woman lol. Didn’t even think about how this would sound like a man writing this (whoops). I was just curious if in general most people showered twice a day (like if women usually showered twice a day so they expected men to as well?)
[–]WildTendernessFDS Newbie109 points110 points111 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Nah, showering too much can be bad. Unless you're super physically active and sweat a lot, once a day is fine. Too much showering strips the oils on your skin.
[–]lival42FDS Newbie52 points53 points54 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well it depends - if you do your workouts in the AM, them a shower should happen soon after. And if you like fresh bedsheets, you shower in the evening too.
[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh yeah, if I worked out in the morning I would definitely shower twice, but I save that till the end of the day because it helps me sleep better.
[–]psilocybeanieFDS Newbie11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you change your clothes before bed, and wash your sheets twice a week, it doesn't really matter. Showering too much will dry your skin out.
[–][deleted] 42 points43 points44 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You've probably got less body hair and you probably sweat less than the average male lurker

[–]beautysubthrowwFDS Newbie28 points29 points30 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Nah I only shower once a day in the evening, after my workout. Idk why anyone would need to shower twice unless they sweat a lot or live in a really grimey environment. I also only shampoo once a week (curly, bleached hair) and just rinse with water otherwise.
[–]SayNadFDS Apprentice9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you live in hot climate/tropical countries, twice a day is a must because you are bound to sweat - it is hot all year long. Deodorant don't do shit for the constantly sweaty armpits, just make it worse.

[–]QuodpotFDS Newbie60 points61 points62 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
YES. Everyone should wear sunscreen, including men, including people with darker skin tones (who are less likely to get skin cancer overall, but if they do, it is usually caught at very advanced stages)
I hung out a few months ago with this guy I knew from college, and aside from the libertarian, anti-vax views he had developed in the past 2 years I hadn't seen him, he also spends a ton of time in the sun without any sunscreen and it SHOWS. He's 24 and has a ton of wrinkles and skin damage. Plus he clearly never thought about trimming his eyebrows, which were dipping into his eyelashes
I used to think he was cute when we were at school together, but blehhhh. All that combined was a huge turn off, but the sun damage alone would have been enough for me
[–]notochordFDS Newbie18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It’s really impressive how fast a person can age if they don’t use sunscreen. I’m looking at men in the 30-38 range and boy howdy do most of them look OLD. We’re talking looking 45-50 years old instead of in their 30s. They should be in their prime and instead look like lumpy husks. 😕

Oh, I wish it were a joke. It's very conservative, redneck here by me & I see antisemitism all the time. A Jewish (and gay, iirc) store owner reported on my town's FB community page last winter that someone made a swastika in the snow in the loading area behind his store. There were many comments to the effect of, "oh, they must've been from out of town. We're too bougie for a local to do that." And, "Oh, it was probably just kids and they don't know what it means." 🙄
I'm FB friends with a Jewish lady in her 60's who is a lawyer. She's an active watchdog for online Anti-Semitism & occasionally catches stupidity from random idiots. In reponse to one such idiot, I commented that Everyone knows that Bill Gates & Grorge Soros are helping to fund the Illuminati's elite military force led by the flesh-eating zombie of George Washington to subvert the Constitution & destroy Trump's chances of reelection. To which Susan commented that she hadn't yet received her check from Soros that he sends to all the Jews. And did anyone have his # so she could call & complain? 🤣

[–]WildTendernessFDS Newbie42 points43 points44 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They shouldn't complain anyways because this is literally the bare minimum. There is so much more nuance to a relationship. If the only things they bring to the table is basic hygiene, they need a reality check.

There was a thread recently on a dating sub where the guy stated he had underwear & socks that were 10+yo. He didn't see a need to replace them because they were in "good shape". And a bunch of other men jumped in to agree. Idgaf. There's no way Hanes boxers older than my preteen are going to be in "great shape". Replace your damn clothes.
[–]SayNadFDS Apprentice10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
shower once a day
If you live in a tropical countries (like Southeast Asia and I guess Hawaii) - the minimum is twice a day, non-negotiable. We are very particular about this thing, because you are bound to sweat all day and if you don't shower twice, you hella stink. I've lost count how many times I get headache from smelling non-showering body odor in public (and I am sorry, mostly from foreigners visiting for a short time). Just please shower twice, the shower is nice, it is hot and the water is cool, we will love you.

Never fails to amaze me the sheer # of stories on relationship subs about unhygienic men.
I only saw this once IRL, a long time ago I had a friend who was seeing this guy, we went to his dorm, and it stank like BO. I think like 4 guys lived there, except it was winter break, so no one else was there. Meaning it smelled worse probably when they were all there. Thankfully she dropped him from her life not long after that.
Otherwise worst I've run into guys who are okay with clutter, but not dirty. And this was never anyone I dated. And their personal hygenie is fine! Did this just become a thing starting w/ millennial and late gen X men, where taking care of your body is "gay"?? My dad is a grouchy old boomer but hes out here with his 6 bucks a bottle lavender scented Cremo shave cream lol.
[–]sidkroseFDS Newbie14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That’s an interesting point. I’m sure there’s always been some proportion of the population that had abysmal hygiene but yeah I think maybe it has something to do with the culture some men fall into where they have very few irl friends and are on the internet a lot and for what ever reason didn’t have parents who encouraged good hygiene. I definitely understand how mental health can impact these things but I truly don’t understand going out in public dirty in raggedy clothes if you have access to a shower and some money for clothes. So odd.
[–]honeybeerollFDS Disciple2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The existing too much online is a good point. I think what also factors into it is in America at least society overall doesn't tell men to care about their appearance. Like generally everyone is told to be neat and presentable, but people will point out if women aren't dressed right way quicker than they will men. Men are told you deserve access to women no matter what, so these scrotes that don't shower and whine that they can't get a date - 1) thet believe they're entitled to women 2) no one's putting intense pressure on them to look good. They'll have a job and friends and family despite the BO 🤷🏼♀️
[–]Half_HaltFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It does seem to be more of a younger guy thing. Men my age & older tend to be more on top of things. Doesn't have to be fancy, either. SO uses like Axe or Old Spice bodywash. But he showers! Multiple times a day! He buys & wears high-quality cologne, too & actually asks my opinion on what I like best.
I know this sub isn't big on men who are police & military. And I get the reasons behind that. I will say that I've found some lovely men by carefully vetting from the group who are a little older & have put in the time & effort to move up through the ranks, though. (Big departments or State for police. Few normal, sane people willingly go into small town rural policing.) The military & most big police departments have strict grooming & hygiene standards. And the guys who are older & have rank tend to stick with them out of habit. Even if they're retired. The ones I've dated have also been exceptionally organized & keep tidy, clean houses.

[–]Half_HaltFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh, definitely! didn't mean to imply that all younger men have bad hygiene. It just seems more prevalent in that population. I think your dad is on to something with his theory about the dot.com workers, though.
[–]starsheepieFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've actually spoken to quite a few of my female friends & we've established that we literally taught many of our ex BFs how to do these things. They didn't know how often to brush their teeth, do laundry, when to replace clothes, how to use deodorant, etc. It's ridiculous how little men seem to know about hygiene. IDK if it's the failure of their parents or what.
[–]Aurore11FDS Apprentice21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
And to all this I'd add: if you don't even approach women.
I know men have to deal with the possibility of rejection and it probably doesn't feel good, but it just is what it is. Women are less likely to make the first move so if you want something to happen with a girl you like, you better be the one to approach her first. If it doesn't work - sorry, it sucked, move on.
Even women don't have the luxury to be completely passive, stay at home and act antisocial, yet have men approach them - so neither do you.
[–]PanzramsTransAmFDS Newbie17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Maybe I’m a bit one-sided on this, but I don’t even understand how rejection from someone you don’t know is even a big deal. Rejection can happen for so many different reasons - she’s dealing with hardship, a family member just passed away, she just got out of a long term relationship and isn’t over her ex yet, etc. I don’t get why guys take it so personally.
[–]sashimi_girlFDS Newbie20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Because men are raised seeing examples of 10/10 women giving up everything for 5/10 guys in the media. They’re the hero of their own story and they’re entitled to a princess, damnit!

Yes!! Extremes are so easy, though. Metrosexuals are super annoying, too!😂🥴
[–]sidkroseFDS Newbie47 points48 points49 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Doesn’t the word metrosexual kind of play into toxic masculinity? Like I wouldn’t mind if a guy groomed as much as I do. If you don’t like that don’t date them but I don’t really see the need to disparage a man who grooms a lot.
[–]bbtexyThrowaway Account-2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Imo, balance is key. There’s a difference between taking care of themselves and being obsessed with getting their nails done. I mean, I’ve dated quite a few of these dudes; in the long run, it became boring to deal with their beauty routine and any kind of drama when a pimple got involved. And they’re usually narcissistic - they always end up paying more attention to their hair than to you. Men can still be clean and fresh without having to go to the salon every week. As I said, balance is the key.
[–]sidkroseFDS Newbie13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s fair but I’d argue the issue there is narcissism vs enjoying grooming routines and such. I just feel the word metrosexual describes a well dressed, well groomed man and is used to disparage that as “too feminine” which is bs.
[–]pinkamena_pieFDS Newbie33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
“Metrosexual” was a word that men came up with to disparage guys with actual good hygiene - they’re too lazy to bathe but they’re fine with flaming men who do.
Just bathe you stank ape! Jaysus!
[–]ninetiesbaby16FDS Apprentice18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think that a lot of conventionally handsome men have quite an extensive beauty regime but nobody notices because he doesn’t talk about it, he just looks good. Like the hottest guys I know irl seem to get their hair cut every two weeks and it’s always styled, wear high quality cologne, have permanent baby smooth shaved faces, look like they get their teeth whitened and they dresses well in clothes they get tailored, on top of being built and muscular. Nobody would think to call them metrosexual because they come across very masculine and they just look effortlessly good. Men taking a lot of care of their appearance don’t look and behave foppish and dandy.
