I recommend menstrual cups or menstrual discs. I usually only need to wear a really thin washable cloth liner on my heavy days with a disc and just use the menstrual disc alone on my light days. Game changer as cups and especially discs are surprisingly comfortable, don't dry you out like a tampon would on a light day so you can wear it before your period strikes or towards the end, can go hours or even half the day without needing to be emptied depending on where you are in your cycle, and reusable for years, so good for your wallet in the long run, too.
I recommend the Lumma menstrual disc because they're the only brand right now with different sizes (small, medium or large, plus they're doing a buy one get one free sale so you can get 2 and try them both without spending too much). I tried the Nixit disc but it was way too big, but I'm rather petite so depending on your anatomy the Nixit may or may not work for you.
I've been using cups for almost the last decade and it's worked fine for me too, but I moved on to discs for the higher capacity, making frequent changes unnecessary during my heaviest days. The suction with cups can be a little annoying but it was never enough to put me off personally --suction isn't a factor with discs btw. I'm happy to report that the sensation of sitting on a wet diaper is long gone for me.

My flow is really light and I can usually change it before going out and be fine, but if your flow is heavy then take a water bottle with you! Or a cup, really doesn’t matter as long as you can have water in there. Dump the blood inside in the toilet, put the cup in the bottle, and shake it. Cup should be clean enough to put back in.

I wash my hands before I go in a stall, reach in to remove it, empty it, dry it with toilet paper, and just pop it back in. Some people use moistened wipes but to me it defeats the purpose of them being better for the environment (that's beside the whole point that big corporations do almost all of the polluting but I digress).
I'm not easily grossed out so the occasional blood on a finger doesn't really bother me, I just dry it and wash my hands when I get out and try not to touch anything with that hand.
I do sterilize in between periods with a little steamer, but the whole point of medical grade silicone is that it doesn't harbor bacteria like tampons and pads can because it's non-porous, so the chance of toxic shock syndrome are pretty much zero. If you're not squeamish about your body I do recommend them. Personally I could never go back to traditional pads and tampons.

My dad had a radical prostatectomy and had to wear adult diapers for a couple months until he was able to control his muscles again and he could not wait to get out of them.
