We are "girls" when men are trying to dismiss us and we are "woman" when they trying to fuck us. These losers will call a 15 year old a woman and a 35yr old a girl.

Not a mod, but I feel this is very appropriate! I usually process the word in my head, I’m so used to hearing “girls.” Now I cringe at it a little!

I agree! A girl is a child. You wouldn't call a woman you respect like your grandmother or a CEO a "girl", would you? We don't call grown men "boys", do we? Don't help society disrespect yourself and other women.

It’s cute and feels endearing. Like we’re both not so different from one another. Maybe it’s generational thing? I haven’t noticed millennials or Gen z get particularly worked up about being called girl by another woman. I would feel worse if another woman called me lady. Can you imagine being drunk in the girls restroom of a club and the other woman in there saying “hey lady, I love your dress you look so cute” …No. that sounds weird. I don’t think saying girl woman to woman is a bad thing.

I agree, I used to catch myself saying "female" and now I bite my tongue if I ever think about saying it again. It sucks because this subreddit is called "FemaleDatingStrategy" and not WomenDatingStrategy or something else.

I work at a bar and when it’s slow and theres not enough drinks to mix, I like to stir the pot by referring to the adult men as “boys”. We need some more boys to come in here! There’s only 5 boys at the bar. Where did the boys with the open tab go? What do you boys want to drink? Etc No one’s corrected me yet, but I hope it makes someone stop and think.

My ex used to do this thing when his male friends would call women "girls" - he would make subtle comments like "oh huh, you're trying to date a girl.. Seems a little young for you, but okay" or "wow, a girl is working in your office, you'd think that would be illegal"

His friends never caught on, they just kept plowing on with whatever self-important monologue

I admit, I say "girl" when referring to other young-ish women sometimes (under 40 or so?). Honestly sometimes it's interchangeable to me because I use woman/women just as much. I call men "guys" a lot too and I consider that the same thing. Sometimes they're men; sometimes they're guys.

Also a lot of women use it as a term of endearment when speaking directly to other women. Example: "GIRL, that dress looks amazing on you!" "Girl, you can do way better than him", "Hanging with the girls/my favorite girl" It can be another way to say sister or friend. Whenever I call men boys that's actually when I'm being condescending or dismissive lol (example: "Boy bye!" lol or if a man is being referred to a little boy that is usually not a good thing)

I'm just saying it's not always quite internalized misogyny or a condescending reason why people say this..However, I understand your point and do try to respect people's wishes if they don't want to be called that.

Let me add to that, that growing up in the Deep South, I've always pushed back HARD and spoken out when any male stranger ever calls me a familiarity. Just DO NOT EVER. I don't know you; you don't know me; we're not familiar, so don't even start with calling me darling, honey, dear, whatever. ABSOLUTELY unacceptable. These days, if I hear it from some man especially a store worker, I start piling it on thick and heavy, with every sentence containing a familiarity right back to them. They see quickly it's unacceptable when tables get turned on them. Just another LVM tactic, a way of rushing intimacy, no matter what the actual social situation is. No man is ever ENTITLED to be familiar with a woman he does not know!

I think this is a great reminder.

I'm >40 and often find myself thinking about 25 year olds as "girls," and I have to consciously correct myself. It's one thing to refer to my close group as "my girls" and another to think of a young adult I don't even know that way.

It's also something we sometimes reflexively do to women who just happen to have small builds. Just because she's 4'10" doesn't mean she isn't a fully-formed grown woman, due all the respect that entails.

I have noticed this in language a lot. We are referred to girls or even worse "feeeeeeemales". I see it on Instagram all the time and it makes me ill.

I've been calling myself a girl for so long that it feels weird to call myself a woman so I avoid doing so but I actually caught myself and called myself a woman today. Also, in responding to this post, I just realized why I and so many other women don't like calling ourselves women. I don't think we use girl because we want to be that young. It's because we've been conditioned to associate the word "woman" in this context with "being old".
