What drives me NUTS is when we're at a restaurant, my lady will not proceed to the counter and get us a table, or put us on the waiting list. The only time I actually go out and of my way to hold a door is if there’s a little kid as I don’t want them to try and catch the door and smash their fingers. The whole "holding the door open" thing is a tricky one, and not because of the reason this person wrote about. It isn't oppressive at all to be nice, but some strange messages by being polite can occur.

Some areas of a big city can make it so that holding the door open and you thanking them equals to "Hey I am single" or "hey feel free to stare at me for 5 minutes or stay VERY close", while other places it is just common courtesy like "oh thank you-thank you too". And then there is the place where those two just mesh together and you don't know what to expect when you need help with a door or you want to help someone by holding the door open.

In the part of a big city I live in both genders just seem to meet creepy people when being polite or getting help. I just hold the door open for everyone when my mind isn't on autopilot.

I now only hold doors open for groups not individuals anymore.

The family of five with the mom holding the baby and the dad yelling after the kids, sure. They are usually smiley and grateful, and don't read motives into me being nice.

The single guy or girl, nope. I don't want you to armchair psychologist diagnosis me and scowl and whatever motives your projecting onto me.
