Proof R/relationships is biased against men. Husband posts asking for advice because he is neglected by his wife and feels lonely and wonders if he should ask her consent to have sex with other women. Husband gets dogpiled and called douchbag sexist muck entitled to sex and so on.

There was just so much sexism, double-standards and cognitive dissonance there ... I don't know where to start.

Ultimately, paying the bill on a date shows appreciation.

So what does the woman do to show appreciation? Apparently nothing.

I’ve been on coffee dates with guys where they didn’t pay for my coffee.

That's the definition of entitlement. Who are you? The Queen?

if he doesn’t offer to pay, it’s definitely a turnoff

So it turns you on if he does pay? You're a prostitute. That's okay, just own it.

most women dating men do want them to pay in the beginning, to set the tone for what’s to come.

Oh, that's a bad sign. You have to keep paying.

But a surprising number of men believe that paying for dinner and dates is nothing more than a thinly veiled exchange of money for sex. This is total fucking nonsense. The ‘men’ who perpetrate this line of garbage are angry misogynists who spend all their time trying to sleep with gold-diggers because their mothers didn’t hug them enough. Fuck those guys. If you’re one of them, get your shit together

Actually they love women and are trying not to sleep with gold-diggers.

By expecting a man to pay simply because he is a man, I was inadvertently maintaining a history of repression, where men are viewed as in control and we women are still viewed as helpless.

So ... by demanding that he work for you and serve you and treat you like his superior ... you made yourself look helpless. That's some world class mental gymnastics right there. 10.0, 9.8, 10.0

If you appreciate your time with someone, you should show her. (emphasis mine)

Once again, exactly what has she done to show her appreciation of him?

she advised women to offer to pick up the popcorn at a movie, or cover valet parking;

So ... both pay for the first date. You've just spent the entire article saying only the man should pay, and now you support this?

[–]garglemesh42 49 points50 points51 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

she advised women to offer to pick up the popcorn at a movie, or cover valet parking;

So... cover a tiny portion of the cost of the date, then claim equality: goal achieved?

Hmm. Somehow that doesn't quite seem fair ...

[–]geminia999 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, the food is about the same as a ticket at the movies

[–]xNOM 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

MMMMMMhmmmmhh fake butttterrrrrr

[–]emperorhirohito 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I once spent £25.00 on two movie tickets. You can get a relatively cheap meal for two for that

[–]Gatorcommune 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but she is only asking them to pay for the popcorn, not the ticket. The principle is clear, pay for a small percentage of the cost of the date.

[–]brain_candy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

THEN claim that fairness/equality had been achieved. That's the dishonest part that gets my blood boiling.

[–]Gatorcommune 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's stupid anyway, if your sexual attraction to somebody is dictated by the money they spend on you then it's not really the person you are dating.

[–]garglemesh42 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True enough. I was more focused on the valet parking bit.

[–]FastFourierTerraform 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, she did go on to say that she deposited $200 into a joint account, and then let him to continue paying for everything, happy that she had "contributed a small part."

More mental gymnastics. She gets a little twinge of guilt perhaps that she never pays for anything, so she pays a little bit, absolving herself, while he continues to pay for nearly everything.

[–]Stephen_Morgan 35 points36 points37 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But a surprising number of men believe that paying for dinner and dates is nothing more than a thinly veiled exchange of money for sex. This is total fucking nonsense.

She's right. It's actually the thinly-veiled exchange of money for absolutely nothing.

most women dating men do want them to pay in the beginning, to set the tone for what’s to come.

She just wants you to pay for everything now to establish that you'll pay for everything later.

she advised women to offer to pick up the popcorn at a movie, or cover valet parking;

"offer".

[–]The03k 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"offer".

Heh, reminds me of a joke by Jim Jefferies.

[–]Mitschu 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't even know if you all ever noticed that drinks cost money.

I know it's a comedy video, but damn it, warn people when the comedians are actually funny. I was sitting here with a dull look on my face, thinking "Great, his gig is that he's drunk and an asshole. Where haven't I seen that be-ffffffffffffffhhhhh!" Now my monitor is now a lovely shade of tan from all the coffee sadly lost to that line.

[–]xNOM 26 points27 points28 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Why? News flash: it’s not about the money, it’s about what the money signifies. “The man should pay on the first date, always. It’s meant to set the tone—that this is and was a date, not a networking opportunity or a new friendship,” founder of online dating concierge service eFlirt and author of “Love @ First Click,” told Salon. “It speaks to a man’s values and shows that he is a gentleman.

LOL, "shows that he is a gentleman."

Translation: "in addition to supporting you financially in the future so that you have new 'choices', he will make you feel like a special snowflake so that noone will ever call you out on your bullshit and reality will never fully penetrate the thin veneer of your self-delusion. In return, you owe him absolutely nothing!! Because girl power!! "

[–]Blutarg 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Wow what a stupid quote. "The man should pay for the date, to show that it's a date.".

[–]evry1DzervsCriticism 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Remember, affirmative "enthusiastic" consent should be the standard, but never, ever communicate clearly with your words.

Never say it's a date, just make sure the man pays for it, so everyone knows it's a date.

[–]chocoboat 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Seriously. How is that different from "the woman should put out, it shows that she's feminine and demonstrates her appreciation for being taken out on a date and being shown a good time"?

[–]brain_candy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because that'd impress some kind of responsibility on the woman, silly!! AND THAT'S BAAAAAAD! /s

[–]stop_stalking_me 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. I'm not going to worship you and treat you like a princess if you don't return the favor. This shit isn't a one way street and I don't understand these entitled women who think it is.

[–]Kyrile[S] 23 points24 points25 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The hamstering going on in that authors mind is crazy.

But if women want men to pay they have to be prepared to put out. Otherwise what does the man get in return? Her company? The males company is equally valuable to the womans so thats a wash.

Split the check or split your legs women.

[–]p3ngwin 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Split the check or split your legs women.

reminds me of the old saying "Cash, Grass, or Ass ?"

[–]Mitschu 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

So it turns you on if he does pay? You're a prostitute. That's okay, just own it.

Damn it, it really pisses me off when people slander prostitutes. They already deal with enough shit.

Prostitutes sell sex for money. Women like Rachel here sell potential sex for money.

The difference is between my definitely selling you a meal and my selling you a promise that I'll definitely consider selling you a meal.

Women prostitutes are respectable businesswomen. Women like Rachel are racketeers.

Other than that, spot on.

[–]rKremlin 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Prostitutes are the only women who are honest about the cost of sex. All other women just lie about how much sex will cost you. So really its not about giving sex for resources, as all women do that. Its about notch count.

[–]alXing 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Counting my blessings because I was born gay and will never have to navigate the nightmare world of dating gender politics.

[–]manofsea 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love when writers completely undershoot there target... It is so funny.

[–]ezetemp 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's the definition of entitlement. Who are you? The Queen?

A spoiled brat.

most women dating men do want them to pay in the beginning, to set the tone for what’s to come.

Oh, that's a bad sign. You have to keep paying.

I'm interested in her and she's interested in my wallet... yeah, no, that's not the tone I'm looking for in a relationship. I have no problem being generous to someone I care about and will often treat friends to dinners just for the pleasure of their company. But you're not getting there on the first date.

But a surprising number of men believe that paying for dinner and dates is nothing more than a thinly veiled exchange of money for sex. This is total fucking nonsense.

Actually they love women and are trying not to sleep with gold-diggers.

Yep, it's a good way to sort out gold diggers and hypocrites. I have nothing against strong, egalitarian women, but I detest entitled hypocrites. If there's a conspicious lack of offers to split checks, there's neither going to be any sex nor any second date.

[–]Gatorcommune -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Once again, exactly what has she done to show her appreciation of him?

Offered him the possibility of sleeping with her.

[–]Kyrile[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get it now. Women are slot machines not vending machines. You put money in pull the handle and maybe you win maybe you hit the jackpot but most of the time you lose and the machine returns only 20% of what you put in.

Probably a tampered slot machine that doesnt reflect the reported odds.

[–]rottingchrist 58 points59 points60 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Toxic feminity.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 46 points47 points48 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

TL;DR version

Women are like sex vending machines. Men need to pay real money for "kindness coins" to put into the machine and hope sex falls out.

And Feminists wonder where "Nice Guys" get this idea from.

[–]Blutarg 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not kindness coins, women don't want those. Real coins are what they want.

[+]DLK601 10 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't seed us your seeds, we want you actually money.

[–]cartwheelnurd 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Praise be.

[–]Consilio_et_Animis 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Spot on. Thanks.

[–]Kyrile[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not vending machines, slot machines. Gambling.

[–]brain_candy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. It's more like going to an arcade, exchanging your real money for tokens and putting them all into one of those coin-bulldozer games, hoping to win tickets. Otherwise known as a scam.

[–]garglemesh42 38 points39 points40 points 10 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

The man should pay on the first date, always. It’s meant to set the tone.

Look, if you want to be a whore, that's your own business. That doesn't mean I have to enable you. Seriously, if women insist that men have to pay for the company of a woman, with a chance of sex, is it really all that different from paying for a hooker? Other than the fact that the woman you're on a date with can decide to say "no" after you've already paid and won't offer you a refund.

PAY. FOR. YOUR. OWN. SHIT.

[–]Elvick 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's like paying for a hooker where you have to spin a wheel of chance on whether or not you get to have sex with her.

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL - Ha ha ha this is gold.

[–]misunderstoof 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's arguably cheaper than a hooker to go on a date but obviously with a woman like this she's going for the long con.

[–]xNOM 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL depends what kind of hooker. And what kind of date.

[–]rKremlin 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is it really? Most guys arent getting sex from a single date. More likely the third. But you will also have lots of onsie twosie dates that go nowhere.

[–]rKremlin 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The tingles are the defacto antidote for whoredom. It just so happens that the tingle dont come cheap. Unless you look like a greek god.

ctrl-f "should": 14 matches

That article likes telling people what they should and shouldn't do.

Why not let people live their lives? Why feel so compelled to boss people around?

Doesn't any semblance of "her body her choice" migrate in any way for your mind to allow men some autonomy, or do you only believe they should follow orders? Is it so frustrating when they do act with agency that you have to write an article about it instead of learning more about them and enjoying them for who they are instead of your fantasy?

[–]Blutarg 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But we all know this is more than a "should" in practice.

[–]rKremlin 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its not about equality, manners, or whatever they claim its about. Its about control. Artificially keeping the price of sex high for men, so they can be controlled.

[–]aesopstortoise 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"When you ask a woman to split the bill, it will friend-zone you, because it doesn’t feel like what just happened was a date. It’s confusing to a woman. You don’t need to pay forever, but you do need to pay in the beginning.”

Correction, " You do need to pay forever, and you do need to pay in the beginning.”

FTFY.

[–]Elvick 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

few seemingly frivolous issues have fanned the flames of anti-feminism as much as who should pay for dates between men and women.

I wouldn't call it frivolous. That money you'd be spending on a date for someone else could be put toward rent or house payments, car payments or insurance, home repairs, debts, and other important needs.

Why should you have to sacrifice your hard earned money to pay for an ENTIRE date?

Why? News flash: it’s not about the money, it’s about what the money signifies. “The man should pay on the first date, always. It’s meant to set the tone—that this is and was a date, not a networking opportunity or a new friendship,”

This makes no sense to me. Isn't the fact he asked you out on a date... the evidence of the fact it's a date? Can't you just ask "is this a date?" if it's not obvious or you're confused? You know, act like an adult?

I have a girl friend who would pay for me a lot, and I'm gay so it wasn't a "date". She is simply generous. Even if I tried to pay, or even just for myself, she'd insist. Once convincing the cashier to not take my money that was already in her hand [man that was frustrating!]. Once her, my boyfriend, and I had dinner and she snuck off to pay for us. That didn't make it a threesome date.

It speaks to a man’s values and shows that he is a gentleman. Most first dates are just a few cocktails, so this shouldn’t be a burden for men

One's gentleman is another's sexist...

And I'd like some evidence of the claim that most first dates are just a few cocktails. And even if it were, you can just say... "Most first dates are just a few cocktails, so this shouldn't be a burden to women to pay for themselves."

Ultimately, paying the bill on a date shows appreciation. It’s a gesture to let someone know you’re interested in them and appreciate them.

So if the woman doesn't pay she isn't appreciative or interested then. Got it.

That’s why I never suggest splitting the bill. A date should feel like a treat and it doesn’t when it becomes an accounting transaction.”

How does a date feel like a treat when you have paid the entire bill? Yevon, how self centered is this woman?

The treat is your interaction with another person you are interested in, if all goes well. If it doesn't, then the fact you both paid for yourself makes it fair and you can simply part ways. The only thing lost is some time.

Even if someone offers to pay for you, you should still offer to pay for yourself. I think that shows respect and appreciation.

Showing you’ve thought about the other person is what matters, and on a first date, paying is a way to do that.

Wow

the real rock bottom moment for me was when I said I was going up to the bar to get a drink and asked if he wanted anything (I wasn’t that thirsty but needed to break the tension). He said no but when I returned and reported that the bartender had generously comped my seltzer, he said he wished he’d known or he’d have ordered one! In that case, I was the one offering to pay, but instead of taking me up on it, he made himself seem like an extreme cheapskate. (Guys: don’t do this.)

Somehow I doubt you were giving off the "I'm buying" vibe, your entire article is how men should pay for first dates...

Horrible human being.

She suggests the guy pay for the first month, or until you’ve established that you’re in a committed relationship.

ie; men never stop paying as proven by the line right after.

While there are outliers, I think it’s safe to say based on everyone I’ve talked to and everything I’ve ever read about this subject that most women dating men do want them to pay in the beginning, to set the tone for what’s to come.

Just when you think it can't get worse... it does!

[–]cydoken 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

"Most first dates are just a few cocktails, so this shouldn’t be a burden for men" --- Who the fuk is still having cocktail first dates? wtf is this 80's era shit.

[–]p3ngwin 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

more importantly, the idea that a man should be able to handle paying for the drinks.

err, shouldn't the woman also be able to easily pay for the same things ?

or is she admitting the man should be the bread-winner and earn more than her...because she's a gold-digger ?

[–]cydoken 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"It's about the message it sends" .. That I make money and you don't? I'm your own personal WIC card for a day..

[–]wazzup987 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

well see when i date a woman we split every thing 50/50. actually this current chick i have been dating has been covering a bit more than 50/50 so i am going to pay for the next date, but thats a side tangent.

point is the woman that wrote this article is just but hurt and needs to get over it.

[–]xNOM 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

As a practical matter, to make things less awkward, I pay on the first date. If there is an offer to pay, I just say "you can pay on the next date." And I mean it. Although I can see how this can be stressful as well, if the woman definitely doesn't want a second date.

It's much less awkward and unpleasant to split every single thing down to the last penny anyway. When you go drinking with buddies, it's more sociable to buy rounds and not keep a separate tab for everyone. Same idea. Takes the stress out of paying.

[–]wazzup987 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Sure but if I buy us both beers. We drink them. Then you buy us both beers. There are only two payments (getting the wallet out) instead of four, and I get to clink glasses with you, look you in the eye, and say "cheers!"

well i typically dont do bar dates.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh. Well, same idea: You buy the movie tickets (one transaction) then she announces she's off to buy popcorn and some drinks for both of you (one transaction) while you find good seats. Very efficient. Less stress.

[–]FastFourierTerraform 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bingo. Pretty much all of my first dates involve more than one transaction. I will typically take initiative on the first one. If they offer to pay, I tell them that they can get the next round/drink/snack or whatever, and they're usually more than happy with that. If they don't offer, then I'll usually say something like, "Oh, I've got this round," implying that I'm not necessarily paying for the next one. If they don't even make an effort the second time around, it's usually not going well for them, and idgaf about politely suggesting we split the bill because they're probably not the type of person that there will be a second date for.

[–]ctlawguy 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not in the dating pool now (thank Dawkins!), but if I were, I'd want the woman to pay for her half and I'd make it clear beforehand.

Women and men should be equal, in all ways, period.

There's a good reason to do this, especially if you date online. You have to determine whether the woman is anything resembling her profile (and whether you actually get along), and to be expected to pay for a date with someone essentially sight unseen is completely unfair.

But this lays bare the sheer hypocrisy of feminism. Men traditionally paid for dates because men worked and had money and women did not; it was (and would be if the date went somewhere) the man's role to provide for and protect the woman. Today, women are empowered to work and support themselves (I was going to say they are "expected to," but in reality feminism does not permit society to expect ANYTHING of women).

There is no reason anymore why one gender should be expected to finance the entire cost of a date, other than that women (including feminists) enjoy the benefits of getting free drinks and meals, and their belief in "equality" is not going to stop them from demanding such benefits.

We all know feminism is not about equality, it is about women's self-interest dressed up as "equality" to make it sound more noble than it is. I would respect feminism more if it was just honest about what it was.

My sister was going to set me up on a date with one of her friends, and the woman demanded that I bring a rose. I noped out of that one. Not interested in someone making demands of me right out of the gate.

[–]double-happiness 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

At a (first) date I went on recently I ended up paying for our drinks without even noticing or particularly planning to. I simply handed over my card to pay for my drink (this was a pay-when-you order type bar, as is standard in the UK) and the girl behind the bar simply charged me for both our drinks. It was only when I got home and was cleaning out my wallet I looked at the receipt and saw I had been charged for the whole round. I never got any thanks for it, shenever offered to pay for her own drink, and the girl behind the bar never asked if we wanted individual bills. As it happened, my date's drink cost nearly twice as much as mine, she was also significantly better off than me; whereas I am self-employed on sub-minumum wage income, she was salaried and owned both a car and her own flat, whereas I do not drive, and rent my home.

On a pragmatic level I think guys are probably just as well to bite the bullet and pay for drinks or a meal early on, lest they be perceived as a 'cheapskate'. It's unfortunate, but probably unlikely to change much any time soon. I doubt women's move into paid work has made much difference really.

[–]garbledcluster 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's better to be perceived as a cheapskate than to end up with a literal prostitute.

That's not to even mention the endless irony of calling someone a cheapskate because they want you to pay for yourself.

I dont have a problem with paying for everything; but if the woman expects it then in return they musnt complain about sexual expectations.

The problem in this article is that it not only says men should pay but also that they shouldnt expect sex. They are saying womens expectations of being paid for are fine while mens expectations of sex are not okay.

The article also assumes female company is more valuable then the males company.

Women cannot retain the benefits of patriachy while getting the rights of equality. They demand to be treated equal then complain that men are not being chivalrous.

But you cannot have your cake and eat it too.

I think that only counts as paying half.

it's not about money at all

Easy to say that when it's not your money, Rachel.

Ultimately, paying the bill on a date shows appreciation.

And men don't need to be appreciated, apparently.

Based on her own dating history and her clients’ experiences, Tillman told Salon, “if he doesn’t offer to pay, it’s definitely a turnoff.”

And this is why the practice continues. Women are taught to feel entitled to being paid for, so men just have to deal with it. I don't see anyone suggesting that this is wrong or should change, no, you just tell men to deal with it.

And how do people react when men feel entitled to something in a relationship? Funny how I don't see anyone telling women to just deal with it when a man thinks he deserves sex, or deserves to make all the decisions, or deserves to control where she goes without him.

That's not how relationships should work. No one deserves anything or is owed anything.

If she insists to split - She qualifies for another date. Don't pay any time to entitled princesses. Use it to your advantage and think with the big head. She ain't the prize.

[–]FastFourierTerraform 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not off hand. Social security (if women live longer, they should pay more, but rates are the same. Women draw the vast majority of SS benefits), auto insurance (men's rates are higher, because they are more expensive to insure), and health insurance (women are way more costly to insure, but rates are mandated to be the same. This flies in the of the face of how factors such as age, occupation, and pre-existing conditions can affect how much you pay) are a good place to start. Google should make sourcing that pretty easy.

[–]garbledcluster 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Men who pay on dates are just idiots and patently anti-male. Might as well get an escort mate, at least you're guaranteed to get laid.

[–]JRPGFan -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

They are also anti-female as they assume women can't pay for themselves. They probably also assume they can't open doors or pull out their own chairs.

[–]Kyrile[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

When women demand men pay, you cant blame the men for thinking that women cant pay. Same goes for doors and chairs. If a woman comes to a date and stands behind her chair refusing to sit down until the man pulls it out for her you cant blame the man for assuming she is physically incapable of doing it herself.

[–]JRPGFan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What? Demanding that someone else pay does not mean that she can't pay, how naive. If you truly believe that any woman is incapable of pulling her own chair out then...well I just don't want to say what I am thinking.

[–]Kyrile[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Obviously she is not incapable but if she acts incapable then the man is not being sexists for going along with what the female demands, its her fault not his.

[–]JRPGFan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nope, men have free will in these cases and they should exercise it. If men continue to give in to demanding women, shit will never change.

[–]Kyrile[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely men shouldnt tolerate these expectations BUT since the pressure to conform comes from women men are not SEXIST for giving in. Stupid desperate weak horny maybe but not specifically sexist.

The weird thing about this to me is the men who insist on maintaining this. I have, on two separate occasions, paid for a meal only to be met with legitimate anger.

Both of these guys were bigger guys, so I'm guessing female neediness makes them think that, as long as they have money, they can still get women, but if women don't need them, they're on their own.

[–]IcarusBurning 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I don't think it's so far-fetched for a guy, considering this ridiculous cultural expectation, to think that a woman paying for the entire first date is a sign that she's not interested.

They absolutely have no right to get angry at you, but if you are still interested in them and just wanted to pay the check, maybe you could suggest to them some other way that you're still interested.

[–]Slink78 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I've always just gone back and forth... The first date generally being paid by whomever asked who out.

Sometimes I'll ask a man or a woman out, and in this case I'll expect to pay and I get a little flustered if my partner will try to split the check and I don't generally let them unless they are extremely insistant (money isnt worth fighting over)-- I asked you to come out and spend time with me, you agreed, let me cover this.

If they ask me out, I'll always offer to split the check, but generally if somebody says to me "I would like to take you to dinner on Tuesday" and they don't offer to pay for me I'd be a bit confused. I guess it's all about wording though, because if the date had been phrased as "wanna grab lunch on thursday with me?" I certainly wouldn't be thrown if they wanted to split the check. All my friends (women) operate in a relatively similar manner so I get confused when I hear about these women who expect men to pay for everything. The only time I ever feel somebody should (and even then, I'll always offer to pay my own way) pay for me is when they imply in the invitation that they are treating me to a night out.

[–]Blutarg 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men Still pay and it’s still fair because girls have much more expenses for themselves than guys do. All that beauty products that cost $$$, all those sanitary products. Tampons alone may cost just as much as her cost to the date.

All those clothes that cost far more, all that makeup and beauty products. All the other products that make those girls pretty which is why you asked her out in the first place are definently at a cost that the men never has to bear.

So the boy paying 100% actually is 50/50. She already paid her share by paying for herself to be beautiful which she had to pay for.

I do pay, but I expect a return eventually. If any of the following are true; no second date; its not going well; no sex; then I pay for my half and leave.

The only time I will always cover the entire date is when I am on a date with younger females like 14 to 20. They typically dont have much money and bring some extra evolutionary value to the table ie nubility.

[–]Kyrile[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Social expectation to pay for other peoples expenses based solely on gender is clearly a rights issue.

Nobody expects women to renounce their gender based priveledges freely. Why would they? Why would anyone give up any priveledge if they didnt have to? Especially if men dont complain about it.

So by complaining about it by drawing attention to it by raising awareness we are letting the women know that this gender based priveledge of men covering womens expenses belongs in the past we wont accept it and they must renounce it or face backlash until they do.

So you dont think gender expectations are a problem?

A gendered rights sub may not be the best place for you. I suggest TRP as, like you, they believe in traditional gender roles.

Oh and they take lots of pills in that sub so theyll be able to hook you up with whatever pill it is youre after.

Response to your edit

Traditionally men paid for womens expenses. In return for this added responsability men had more rights in proportion.

Nowadays men no longer have those extra rights but are still saddled with the same responsabilities. These expectations are pushed by women, often the same women who demanded men be stripped of their extra rights.

It comes down to you cannot have your cake and eat it too.

Outside western matriarchal culture this is not as much of a problem as men and women retain their traditional roles rights and responsabilities.

Patriarchy is harsh but fair in its distribution of rights and responsabilities.

Matriachy is harsh and unfair in that it grants all rights to women and all responsabilities to men.

I would prefer the middle ground ie true equality, which is what mensrights strives for
