That’s thing, especially with sexual harassment being defined as ‘unwanted behaviour’. As soon as something is unwanted it automatically becomes harassment, even in a completely innocent case like saying ‘Those glasses look really nice on you’.

Thankfully most women have common sense and don’t interpret everything as harassment, but a significant minority will.

I think people these days are just dramatic af. Everybody’s traumatized by something. I work in psych, I understand that partially trauma is up to the perception of the person, but it’s gotten out of hand a bit. Everybody is a victim. It’s a weird sort of narcissism that’s just spilling out of the seems of society.

As for whether it not showing interest is an affront, for me it only is when I’m CLEARY not interested. Like sir, you smiled at me, I gave the faintest 1 second smize and turned away. I hummed when you told me random stuff about your life, and created distance when you started getting closer to me. If you think I still might be interested after showing an extreme disinterest in you as a human, then yeah I’m a bit annoyed. Now, because you don’t understand social cues, I have been forced into a social interaction where I’m forced to be the “bad guy” and reject someone. Again, the only time I’m annoyed. It’s only been “traumatic” when I was like 12 and grown were following me in their cars and yelling/honking at me.

A lot of people here are pointing out the obvious, narcissism, victim culture, etc., which is fair. The other thing to remember is that women talk about male attention as a social flex, the subtext being "I have so many options that I can reject these guys all day." Generally they do this around other women. Doing it around men usually means they're insecure enough to flex on men (who aren't competition) or too socially inept to realize they're barking up the wrong tree. It's the equivalent of a man going on about what nasty shit he'd do if he got his hands on a hot chick celebrity; around men, it's just what we do, around women, it's off-putting or at least awkward.

Just playing devil's advocate. Seemingly a lot of women out here really are just drama magnets like everyone else is saying.

It doesn’t help at all that these types of women tend to actively shut down spaces where men can flirt with women and then turn around and wonder why so many men have little experience doing so. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy and honestly I think it’s by design to keep men sexually frustrated and sex in the power of women’s hands.

Sometimes I read what happens over there and I'm so glad to live in a less 'developed' country. The amount of women during my school years, workplaces and other environs that have actively acted like that are so rare. Even those who are not interested in you are at least coldly neutral and not outwardly hostile. Hell, in my gym, there's a ~50 year old woman who I regularly talk to, she works out a lot and is friendly to pretty much everyone there, male or female, beginner or veteran in the gym. Kept telling me about how proud she is that her daughter got accepted into a Chemistry university and how her son is working abroad in Sweden and sending money back home. Just an all around bundle of joy.

It seems to me that it's usually the extremely immature women that try to put you down.

Yes, getting propositioned is annoying. Getting rung up by vaccum salesmen and mormons is annoying. But it is far from traumatic, if it doesn't happen too often.

Now, getting bombarded by ads all day every day has insidious effects and leads to a fatigue that creeps up on you and can ruin your mood. And some attractive women get propositioned so often and so tenaciously in some environments that it can become traumatic I imagine. Similar how always being rejected can become traumatic.

But if you become psychologically broken by being rejected once or by being propositioned once, you are unable to function in society and in public. You should probably be institutionalized.

Have you tried asking your friends why they feel that way? As in, what makes them feel threatened by men's attention?

For me, it's the men who won't take no for an answer or become angry when rejected. It's not all, or even most, but it's enough to be wary of any men approaching me romantically.

When I was younger, I had to file a restraining order when a rejection turned into stalking and threats. But that's not the only instance where "not interested" or even "I'm married" wasn't enough to get a guy to bugger off.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying only men react badly to rejection. Just that, from a woman's perspective, it's stressful to worry about what the (much stronger) person in front of you will do when you turn them down.

Take this with a grain of salt. Once I read that it's an evolutionary trait. Take into consideration that we are as evolved as cavemen, genetics-wise. So they have a very adaptative instinct to fend-off men, because, as we evolved, contraception wasn't a thing, so men interested in them put them at risk, even more when pregnancy was very lethal. So, the faster, harder and unequivocally they sent men they didn't see genetically fit to impregnate them the safer they were going to be. Or, said in another way, those who weren't selective enough ended up dying or their progeny ended up dying more frequently than thode with the opposite genetic traits.

Sometimes it's not just some cultural hate. Culture is like a forest that grows over the richness of our genetics. It tends to shape around our instincts, disguise them or sharpen them. We build a narrative. But most of those narratives are only mythological explanations for basic evolutionary traits.

I don't know about feeling automatically upset from that situation with nothing happening beyond the rejection, but I have heard that girls get stressed about guys asking them out because some guys can't take rejection well. For example, I'm sure we've all heard of the guy who hits on a girl, gets rejected, and just goes "well you're ugly and have a terrible personality anyways, so good fucking luck trying to get anyone since you just threw your one chance away since you're pretentious as fuck." They're also, of course, worried about the guy getting physical too. And finally, if they don't like the guy at all, especially because of his looks, it's kind of insulting to them. As in, that guy had the audacity to think they're on the same level as them.

If they’re not reciprocating, have earbuds in, or are generally trying to make themselves smaller so that people won’t see them, they’re more than likely not interested. It’s not hard to get that some people don’t like being approached because it’s happening to often and they don’t like the unwanted attention.
