No, I take the improper use of the disorder as an insult, if you’re going to make autism jokes do it right

It's fairly common in (severely) autistic children/adults that when they get stressed they will curl up grab their knees and rock back and forth.

[–]BigDaddyReptar -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No its not its a reason you cant critize any one like that. You dont critize a group based on the 0.001%

Thanks for making my point

[–]BigDaddyReptar -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If your point is that you cant critize any one based off dumbshit then sure

[–]joedaddy707 -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Where can't you criticize police, or did you pull that out of your ass? Maybe you should watch some videos of the lovely little angels out in Chicago yelling fuck the police as they go by and the police doing nothing. Sounds an awful lot like criticism, right? How about any of the other thousands upon thousands of videos of people doing the exact same? This whole bullshit about how the police are just looking for a reason is getting out of goddamn hand. Maybe a better example is how we're not supposed to criticize anything that BLM, or feminist put forth as absolutes. Any criticism of either of those two organizations get you labeled all sorts of nasty's, when nobody should be above criticism.

[–]maxcorrice 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You do realize civilians will physically assault those people right? Oh and don’t forget the public outlash against anyone having the audacity to use their rights and protest the national anthem

[–]Chaz042 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This would be accurate, since it's supposed to be, Government by the People, for the People.

[–]Experttradition 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Someone should tell that to the government

[–]Rolten 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Man, of all the Western countries the USA is one of the countries furthest removed from that.

[–]danzibara 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In the US, the people control their governments, technically speaking. There are a lot of laws that require governments to be accessible and transparent to their constituents. If you ever find yourself with way too much time on your hands on a Tuesday morning, check out a public hearing for some mundane municipal issue. They are boring and poorly attended, but generally public comments must be addressed, even if it just a very polite manner of saying, “That’s an absurd statement, stakeholder.”

Granted, there is no shortage of examples where governments flaunt their requirements to be responsive to constituents, but in the long run, I think that that kind of behavior is minimized when you take into account everything from installing speed bumps to national defense contracts.

[–]AloysiusC 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Yes. It's a democracy. Not a monarchy or dictatorship.

[–]souldoge98 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's a constitutional republic, democratic yes but not a democracy.

[–]AloysiusC 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Regardless - the government doesn't "rule".

[–]provocerar 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Eh democratic is debatable. If it was on a scale the U.S would be far less democratic than other first-world countries

[–]BigDaddyReptar 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes an no we have much more state focused governemts which the people influence a lot more other countries have much more national focused government and you could almost even make the comparison to states being countries in europe and the national government being the EU

[–]maxcorrice 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It would be a democratic republic, but it’s actually an oligarchy

[–]maxcorrice 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s an oligarchy

[–]AloysiusC 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. I think the 2016 election very clearly showed that.

[–]Isellmacs 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The government is a tool of the powers that be.

[–]ThEGr33kXII 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

In theory you rule over them. They're just your representative...

[–]Experttradition 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They're just your representative...

Who do they think they're fooling?

[–]ThEGr33kXII 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed... But we can still tell them that they're terrible at doing what they should be doing. Ha. Small victories huh

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Does this mean the U.S. Government doesn't rule us? People slam them 24/7.

Question the government and the government will question you.

An old slogan, I don't know who to attribute it to.

[–]93re2 101 points102 points103 points 8 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

That quote is not from Voltaire.

[–]tenchineuro 73 points74 points75 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Nice...

And so we go on inventing Voltaire. Another dictum that has recently gained wide currency on the web is this: “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.”

Now regularly attributed to Voltaire, this saying seems to originate with something written in 1993 by Kevin Alfred Strom, an American neo-Nazi Holocaust denier, and not a man who obviously exudes Voltairean wit and irony. But once you become an authority, it seems, all sides have a claim on you.

It may not be by Voltaire, but I still think there's something to it.

[–]--Edog-- 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It COULD have been written by Voltaire.

[–]OliverBludsport 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Voltaire? Is that you?

[–]--Edog-- 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"This could have been written by Voltaire" - Voltaire

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It COULD have been written by Voltaire.

A lot of people believe it is by Voltaire, so it's at least in the ballpark.

[–]karatdem 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It is a shame it was written by a Neo-Nazi and is riddle with guilt by association, because it is a very good quote regardless of the ideology of the author.

[–]clickerzeros 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good? It sounds good, but it's wrong.

[–]PM_ME_UR_PC_SPECS 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

A neonazi holocaust denier?

[–]Zyklon_Bae 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But the premise is sound.

[–]AloysiusC 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Who cares who said it? Focus on the idea not the person who voices it.

[–]njullpointer 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"quick! we dont like the message, find a way to discredit it!"

"we... could say it was said by a nazi?"

"great!"

"and a holocaust denier!"

"even better! they'll never listen now!"

That was a cool article.

A neo-Nazi Holocaust denier.

Fascinating stuff. Obviously if that were common knowledge, people would dissociate themselves from that quote.

In order to give it the credibility it deserves, we attribute the quotation to somebody more attractive.

[–]PanderjitSingh_k 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Neo-nazi is a widely used label these days, most often to describe people who aren’t.

[–]ARandompass3rby 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well it seems the article doesn't directly mention who said it. I guess we'll never know if the person who said it was or wasn't genuinely a neo nazi or is just being mislabelled.

However that is definitely something I can see someone who holds Nazi beliefs saying, in regards to the Jews.

[–]Grubnar 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think people usually skip the "neo" and just use "nazi".

[–]Elvick 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fascinating stuff. Obviously if that were common knowledge, people would dissociate themselves from that quote.

Hitler supported animal rights, should we oppose animal rights to distance ourselves from Hitler?

Or should things not be so black and white? The quote could come from Honey Boo Boo, and it would hold the same meaning.

[–]What_Is_X 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hitler breathed air, so you should disassociate yourself from that. Logic.

[–]Lupinfujiko -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]dafafdadsf 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right. He used a different font when he said it.

[–]icecoldpopsicle 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It doesn't work that way today. This is simplistic stuff from the 17th century. Today they put objectively inferior people ahead of you on the basis of gender and race or sexual deviance and make it illegal to criticize in order to fragment society. Divide and conquer.

Machiavelli won out, not voltaire.

[–]CanadianAsshole1 80 points81 points82 points 8 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

This quote was by a white supremacist, not Voltaire. We all know (((who))) he was referring to.

Stop giving the SJWs more fuel man, half of reddit already thinks we are Nazis.

[–]UNLIKELYME 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Kevin Alfred Strom (born August 17, 1956) is an American White nationalist, neo-Nazi, Holocaust denier, White separatist and associate editor of National Vanguard.

Voltaire was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher famous for his wit, his attacks on Christianity as a whole, especially the established Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and separation of church and state.

[–]TheMythof_Feminism 27 points28 points29 points 8 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

This quote was by a white supremacist

What's your point?

All arguments must be judged on their own merit, not the merit of the person delivering the argument. Failure to follow this concept leads to making an argument from authority or an ad hominem argument, both of which are complete nonsense.

[–]jmkiii 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Does the source of a quote not matter to you? It's a quote! The name attached to the quote is where it derives weight.

If it is right, it's right like a broken clock is a couple times a day.

[–]Elvick 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Given quotes from "Unknown" get passed around... I think you're overestimating how many truly care the "source" of a quote. Hell some of my favorite quotes I can't be arsed to remember the source of. Since it's irrelevant.

Why does who says something make it more or less valid?

You can still hate the person saying it, but agree with this one specific thing. If that person you hate said the Earth is round, do you become a flat Earther? Do you start denying facts to avoid agreeing with evil people?

You may disagree with how he came to quote, but the quote does have a point. I don't think any quote stands up to deep scrutiny to it's logic. Since I see a lot of people doing that here. Figured I'd toss that out there.

[–]jmkiii 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Context matters! It matters to me, and it matters to our detractors.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Alfred_Strom

Here Is the passage, "To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: Who is it that I am not permitted to criticize? We all know who it is that we are not permitted to criticize. We all know who it is that it is a sin to criticize. Sodomy is no longer a sin in America. Treason, and burning and spitting and urinating on the American flag is no longer a sin in America. Gross desecration of Catholic or Protestant religious symbols is no longer a sin in America. Cop-killing is no longer a sin in America - it is celebrated in rap "music." The degradation of beautiful young girls in disgusting pornography is no longer a sin in America. The killing by the multiple millions of the next generation in the womb is no longer a sin in America. But anti-semitism is the ultimate sin in America. But as things get worse and worse, we are losing our fear of this silly word. We all know who it is that controls the wealth of our nation through their exchanges and counting-houses in New York. We all know who it is that has deformed the minds of two generations of Americans with their television programs. "

[–]Elvick 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Context matters!" - he says ignoring context of why people post the quote.

[–]SirSausagePants 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So if a white supremacist says "We should protect children from pedophiles" is it now wrong to protect children from pedophiles?

Great people focus on ideas. Mediocre people focus on events and small people focus on people.

Take the statement "2+2=4". How is its truth value affected by altering the person who makes it?

If it is right, it's right like a broken clock is a couple times a day.

You're conflating the statement with the person who made it. You should be saying "if he is right,..." not if "it" is right. It's right or wrong, not because a "bad" person said it.

Oh they're obsessed with people. That's all they ever talk about. I can't count how often I argued with them and they instinctively assumed I'm just complaining about my life and respond with stuff like "sorry you can't get laid". And what context have you provided that affects the truth value of the statement as used in the context of this post?

[–]jmkiii 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The context of the post is that we, an often maligned group, are debating the validity of the ideas of a convicted pedophile and white supremacist. As a misunderstood and hated group, we should do our best not to give ammunition to those who would dismiss men's suffering. You may not care where something came from, but many do. This looks bad.

Again: how does that affect the truth value of the statement?

[–]jmkiii 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

IDGAF about the logic of the statement. I'm not sure why you are so focused on "truth value."

Truth Value: ⊥

[–]AloysiusC 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

IDGAF about the logic of the statement.

Exactly. Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm not sure why you are so focused on "truth value."

Because I don't want lies or falsehoods to be spread or used in reasoning. And in order to identify such falsehoods, one must establish their truth value.

Take this statement for example:"Every minute that passes, we are one minute closer to death." Would you say it's true or false?

[–]morebeansplease 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This post is logical.

What is your point? Are you another one of those alt-rightards that believe the world is controlled by a mysterious cabal of Jews?

[–]Lucifirius 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

No, do I have to be to agree with the statement that says people are ruled by the ones you can't criticize?

[–]0x123d 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You can't criticize those who rule over you (A), true, but not everyone you're not allowed to criticize (B) is one of them. In other words, A ⊂ B.

[–]blfire -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

which would make the statment in the picture incorrect.

  1. It’s not Voltaire
  2. We can and totally do criticize women.

[–]skwishy29 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

We’re not allowed to criticize women what?

[–]GreeceZeus 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That's what I came here to say. I think this sub is exaggerating sometimes.

[–]skwishy29 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Exactly, I just subbed cause it looked good but some of it is just men-feminism. A guy here is pissed that people say “children are taken from their mothers”, pretty much like a feminist getting pissed about “hello boys and girls”

[–]zachattch 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

? Can you elaborate?

[–]skwishy29 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

On what

[–]zachattch 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don’t understand the last point.

[–]skwishy29 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh this guy was mad that people said “children are being taken away from their mothers” when talking about the border issue. I told him it has no meaning and when people say it, it’s not meant as “children are taken from their mothers, who btw are the only important parent just sayin” Seems like a feminist thing to get mad over figures of speech people use that have no literal meaning

[–]Soccitoomee 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists. You can criticize an anti-feminist woman easier than a feminist man.

[–]Michael-earth_C131 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No one, I've criticized God before, and I've criticized most women and all of the feminist movement more times than I can count

[–]OfficialDudeGuy3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You're clearly allowed to criticize women. OP is evidence of that.

[–]jmkiii -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Voltaire did not say this!

I'm not going to look it up right now, but I want to say it was some Nazi pedophile douche guy.

https://www.mediaite.com/online/to-learn-who-rules-over-you-viral-voltaire-quote-probably-originated-with-white-supremacist/

The quote is unanimously attributed to the French polymath Voltaire — who, in fairness, was an aphorism-spouting machine. The problem: there’s no record of Voltaire ever having said it. A Google search of the quote turns up absolutely nothing before 2012. (Smarter minds note the misattribution.) Twitter seems to have discovered it in May of that year.

The closest source to have been located is a 1993 text by white supremacist Kevin Alfred Strom entitled All America Must Know the Terror That is Upon Us. Strom was a co-founder of the West Virginia-based white supremacist organization National Vanguard; he later pled guilty to charges of possession of child pornography and served two years in prison.

[–]chambertlo 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women are only allowed the illusion of power simply because there are so many pieces of shit men in positions of power that have committed heinous acts due to that power. If more decent men ran shit, feminism wouldn't even be a fucking thing. It's rich, white, entitled men that have ruined shit for the rest of us.

So, women?

Only if you're dumb enough to marry one.

The argument could be made for mooselims. For some reason we are not allowed to criticize izlam, even though that toxic pile of pigshit religion is responsible for much of the violence in the world today, and for the rapid deterioration of western society over the last 17 years.

No not women. Women have no real power. Real power comes from the courts and blue pill simps. Without these two factors women wouldnt have the ability to continue to destroy our society.
