Vast majority of statues in history are of military leaders (most kings back then were military leaders too). Since modern women, with all the equal rights, aren't coming in hoards to join the military, it is safe to say that even if women weren't "oppressed" there would still be more statues of men.

Women can fight the patriarchy by demanding equity in jobs like sanitation, sewage, road crews, roofing, plumbing, etc. Those jobs are predominantly male so there’s plenty of opportunities for young women to enter, for example, sanitation field, get up ridiculously early in the morning, and empty garbage cans in all kinds of weather. Or, throughout the summer, they can roast in the sun as they repair roofs. Or, perhaps they’d like to wade through waist-deep sewer water instead. Lots of well-paying jobs that lack female representation are just waiting for some feminist to out her money where her mouth is and fill out the job application.

Feminists are completely right about the state of the world before the 20th century. Women really didn't contribute to many important things because they simply weren't allowed to. They were expected to stay at home and raise their babies.

Their status and power grew throughout the 20th century, and right now what people can't agree on is where the pendulum is. Are women still trying to catch up to men in terms of equality and respect and power? Or have they achieved parity? Or have they blown right past them?

And confounding this is that it's a truly different situation from one generation to another.

My wife ran a small private university for decades and I think her experience was instructive.

The Board of Directors, who controlled the money and got to decide on where the buildings go and what they'd be named, were about 95% Boomers and 95% men.

The academics controlling the curriculum and teaching the classes were mostly Gen-Xers and had a roughly even gender distribution.

The up-and-coming underpaid professors were mostly Millennial women. Men started getting scarce around that age bracket.

The students were Zoomers, and although they were accepted to college in roughly equal numbers, nearly two thirds of their graduates were women. And men were terrified of even offending them because they weren't the slightest bit afraid to use the new Title IX rules to make a young man's life unlivable and drive him right off of campus.

So - where's the pendulum? Well, if you're 70 you've lived your life in a system of patriarchy, and if you're 20 you're experiencing something much closer to matriarchy.

Should women have more statues than men? No not necessarily (also having statues of people at all is controversial). But it is not insignificant to consider the obvious fact that women are clearly underrepresented. Is that because they haven't contributed as much historically? Possibly Have their contributions been ignored or buried? Possibly. If so, why is that? If they genuinely have not contributed as much historically, why is that? Are women naturally less curious or ingenious? Or has something deprived them or dissuaded them of the opportunity? These are all fair questions to ask.

A lot of those male statues are for soldiers who fought and either died in wars, returned with war-related issues, or are “unknown soldiers”. Most women do not want to have to register for Selective Service because they don’t want to be drafted. There aren’t a lot of statues for staying home cleaning dishes during wartime.

I think you probably are wrong, because she’s right about how women were historically treated. I mean they weren’t even allowed to vote for a long time, so what makes you think women would be allowed to hold other powerful societal roles?

It doesn’t make all that much sense bringing it up nowadays, but she’s perfectly within her rights to explain how women aren’t worse ‘contributors to society’ (which is evidently what you think), they were just historically suppressed (which is true).

Whether they were oppressed or not, if the statues signify contributions, then there being more male statues makes sense.

Saying women could have contributed as much is irrelevant to the question who actually did, given the lack of ability to change history.

Just ask her your teacher how many women lost their lives on the front lines during either the Civil War, or WW1.

This ignores the harsh reality that the best of the best (at pretty much everything) will be men.

Just look at the IQ distributions. Women cluster around the average, while men comprise the overwhelming majority of people on the low-end and the high-end of the spectrum.

So right there it makes sense why most advances in society come from the work of men.

Then you add in the physical differences and the differences in interests (personality differences), and it's no wonder why men have largely been the ones to drive humanity forward. There has been a massive push over the past few decades to get more women into STEM careers. But when you look at the numbers, countries that have more equality actually have less women going into those fields compared to countries with worse equality laws.

Here's another way to think about it. Pick 100 random men and 100 random women and have them compete against each other. Now try to think of something they could compete over that the women would beat the men at. The group of men will beat the group of women in pretty much any competition. A good example of this from the real world is blind auditions. Feminists demanded blind auditions and blind resume reviews, but every time it led to more men being selected than before so they immediately scrapped the concept.

So why would anyone be surprised when this plays out across society and throughout history?

There are always outliers. There are many amazing women who have done amazing things. But denying reality just to make women feel better about themselves is wrong imo.

A big reason women are the majority of the population is that men die earlier. As it turns out, doing things that make history are very often risky and can lead to an early death.

MRAs have long talked about how society has always tried to bribe men into doing the dangerous and grueling work (such as going to war) by promising glory and that they will be honored and remembered in history through things like statues. How else are you supposed to convince someone to do something so deadly and painful?

And now feminists are claiming that having mostly male statues is evidence of discrimination against women. It reminds me of how there really wasn't a gap between men and women in college in the beginning of the 1900s, but then we had some major wars and started drafting young men. To try to repay those young men, we created the GI Bill, which granted funds to veterans which could be used to pursue higher education. That is when the gap between men and women started, and that gap closed in the 1980s, just a few years after the end of the Vietnam War (ended in 1975 and was the last war with a draft). Then feminists looked at the higher rate of college education among men and declared that it was proof of discrimination against women.

This is ridiculous. Why are they complaining about statues? If they think that there aren't enough statues honoring women who made great accomplishments, then why don't they just commission some to be made? There's no law against making statues of women. All they need to do is find a sculptor who is willing to do it; they can even find a female sculptor, at that! Why is this an issue?

Woman do contribute a lot to the world, without them we would be lost, but also the other way around and most statues are military witch are 99% male, but it would be sexism if when someone wanted to make a statue of a woman people would say "no, because she's a woman" but that doesn't happen, where I live we have a couple statue's of woman who did important things, we also have statue's of men who did important things, it's not sexism, it's just the way it is

Yes, women have been suppressed in society long ago. No, they haven't contributed to society equally. Women haven't done as much as men unless you want to put the fact that a lot of men wouldn't have done anything if it weren't for support from mother's, wives, sister's, etc.

In human history? Sure, men obviously did more things in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, political theory, philosophy, warfare, etc.

The point your professor was trying to make is that women aren't inherently inferior and capable of pushing forward human progress in those areas as well. We've seen a bunch of female Nobel Prize winners, important engineers, philosophers, mathematicians, etc both in the past and today.
