Cancel culture is the simple fact that corporations in the US who want to have a future are not gojng to take the side of the demographic that is shrinking at such a dramatic rate.

The problem with cancel culture is You can’t deradicalized them or use them as an example of what not to do once you cancel them. You turn them into a martyr and sometimes people feel sympathetic. A good example is Nick Fuentes, he is now a cult leader because nobody told him his ideas are absolutely retarded because it festered in an echo chamber. His cult indirectly operates because of cancel culture separating people from their families because they had the wrong opinions. You should boycott people not cancel them or there might be more cases like this.

Also there’s a difference between being boycotted and being canceled. With boycotting there’s at least a way to fix yourself and stop being so stupid while with being canceled you just enable the stupidity offsite where it festers and gets worse.

It’s also dangerous to ruin somebody’s life because now there is a chance they have nothing left to lose and go ballistic… or at least will actually get involved in politics against whatever subject that banned and now people will become sympathetic to them undeservingly. Canceled people don’t have to change because there’s no incentive to do so, especially since The cancel mob is unforgiving and eventually that bad Karma will catch up to them.

The biggest victims of cancel culture are not rich comedians (although the recent backlash against John Mulaney is bizarre), it is left-leaning intellectuals, writers and leaders who either fail to fall in line with progressive party orthodoxy (David Show, Jessie Signal) or political / academic leaders who have committed a sexual infraction with a colleage (Scott Stringer, Brandy Brooks, David Sabatini and fuck I'll even say it - Cuomo and Franken).

Cancel culture is making the left joyless and authoritarian, a true circular firing squad the squash out any kind of meaningful dissent, and excellent tool to hunt down one's political enemies.

Twitterati goes overboard in its pile ons, Tim Minchin has a song ('15 minutes') which addresses the fickle nature and walking on eggshells. Don't just join a mob, too often are incidents misrepresented.

But also dog whistles and plausible deniability is real, disagreement or account termination for going outside TOS isn't being cancelled.

I wrote letters and emails to several different government departments politicians to get Julien Blanc's visa in Australia cancelled. To what extent I was responsible for the eventual cancellation I don't know, there were probably others doing similar.

I felt justified in my actions because anyone who basically boasts about having committed sexual assault and encourages others in similar behaviour can fuck right off, we have legislation that lets one of our government departments force them to fuck right off, and I would feel guilty as hell if I hadn't taken action and he had started boasting about assaulting girls in Australia.

Obviously he can still express himself in other ways, via social media for example, that don't involve sharing public spaces with me, my daughters, those nice girls who ring up my purchases at the local supermarket, those fourteen year olds playing netball in the parklands etc. So it wasn't by any means a full cancellation.

Would do it again. 10/10 experience.

Not a fan. If someone says something objectionable in realtime, I suppose consequences are probably inevitable, but I don't like the dredging-up of remarks made years ago, especially if the person currently denounces their earlier viewpoint. People can evolve, you know!

outside of slurs/derogatory words, nobody should be cancelled for their views on controversial topics.

people just cancel for the fun of it nowadays. one person makes a comment saying 'this doesn't sit right with me' and lots of people start agreeing even if they dont feel the same way. im happy some people I watch are uncancellable.

Cancel culture is always bad when it's average people getting their lives destroyed for one tiny mistake. You got unreasonably mad at wait staff? That's bad, but you don't deserve to have 200 people call your employer and get you fired.

Cancel culture is neutral when its public figures and companies. It's just a tool. The problem we have with it is because we live in a fractured society that can't agree when to use it.

People deciding on their own that they don’t want to support someone after they’ve done something that goes against their values is perfectly fine. The problem arises when people don’t think for themselves and start to believe what they’ve been told by other. Go onto any news channel in America, and you can within 45 seconds know where the host stands on every topic. “You’re pro-choice? Well then surely that must mean you also are pro immigration, and if that’s the case then you certainly must also believe in free healthcare…” etc.

Social media only just became popular in the last 15 years. As time has passed, the standard for what is "acceptable" to be accepted by progressive society grows more strict and you had to walk a tighter line of acceptability.

The stricter it gets, the more people get canceled. For example, progressive straight white men get canceled for homophobia/racism/misogyny/transphobia. Gay men get canceled because of misogyny/racism/transphobia. Black/hispanic men get canceled for misogyny/homophobia/transphobia. Asian men too, but nobody seems to really care. White feminists get canceled for racism/transphobia. Black feminists get canceled for homophobia/transphobia.

What's hilarious about this is that progressives flex their political power by having a "big tent" party. But these days people will abstain from voting because they got burned by someone else in the tent. The left is basically eating itself alive.

Meanwhile conservatives have gotten away with murder because the left is so damn fractured and divided from its purity tests, canceling, and virtue signaling, that it can't seem to build an effective movement.

I had people attempt to cancel me once.

Was part of a horror group on FB and there was a discussion about favourite summer camp horror films. I said that mine was (and still is) Sleepaway Camp from 1983.

For those who haven't seen the movie: it's about a mute girl who got traumatised by a boating accident which killed her brother and father. She goes to a summer camp, gets bullied, and then starts killing all the pedo coucillors, creepy molestor adults, and teenage bullies. Bit of an anti-hero. Anti-villian, maybe. The twist at the end is that she's fucked up because she's actually the brother who supposedly died in the accident, but was forced to live as a girl by her controlling aunt.

So yes, it's a movie which has an outdated and negative portrayal of trans people. Sort of. It's not PC, shall we say. But it's a silly, gory, classic slasher and Angela (although undoubtedly an unhinged psychopath) is a cool character.

Anyway, some trans folk on the page got offended that I liked the movie, and wanted me to renounce it/apologise to them. I refused, so they copied as much info from my public profile as they could, along with my picture, and attempted to doxx me on "trans twitter".

Nothing happened because I don't live my life online. I got some hate messages and my girlfriend at the time got a rape threat, but that was it.

So that's my one and only experience with cancel culture. Pretty stupid.

The biggest aspect of this that I’ve noticed is how so many YouTubers that I follow have to come up with ways to dance around the YouTube algorithm in order to not get demonetized or have their videos taken down. Words like rape, feminism, suicide, etc have to be reworded to something more coded.

"Cancel culture" is just a new term for "progressive people bitching". Many of the "canceled" celebrities haven't even lost contracts or jobs. They were just criticized on social media, as it was the case with Joe Rogan and Matt Damon.

Truly canceled celebrities like Armie Hammer didn't lose on projects because someone was complaining about them over Twitter. There were serious allegations against them from multiple sources. Now, I could see the point that unless he has been proven guilty on court, he shouldn't have lost his job. However, attributing this to some kind of new movement product of today's culture ignores that people involved in big and potentially criminal scandals, whether politics or not, have always lost job prospects and blacklisted from public life because companies and political parties have always wanted to avoid damage to their reputation.

The least serious forms of cancelation, like the ones I was describing in my first paragraph, have always existed as well and on both sides of the political/social spectrum. Remember when everyone was offended at Madonna's Like A Prayer and the use of the song in a Pepsi commercial? or the controversy over the coming out episode in one of Ellen Degeneres' shows? Or when the Dixie Chicks said that they were embarrassed to be from the same state as George Bush? or when Janet Jackson showed a nipple for less than a second during a SUper Bowl performance?

People seem to have selective amnesia where they don't seem to remember the bitching from past decades, paired with a desire to say what they want without getting criticized for it.

For instance, any comedian saying they’re canceled is lying. They still have strong fan bases and make a lot of money. Some people just might not like their jokes anymore or aren’t fans of them, that doesn’t mean they’re “canceled”

Unless you’re like harvey weinstein or something, you’re not really canceled. All this stuff is just buzzwords with no real meaning behind them to push a narrative that outrage culture wants to oppress you, brought to you by the very same people who pushed to ban Grand Theft Auto in the early 2000s and want to ban books now ironically enough
