EDIT: if you're coming here looking for conclusive evidence of something you'll probably be disappointed. Lol. Because...

EDIT: by "relationship" both the paper and me (since someone made me notice lol) mean "marriage or cohabitation or romantic relationship or casual dates": basically anything which involves regular sexual contact with a partner.

EDIT: the title of the post is WRONG: the amount of men who want a relationship and don't have it is 31%. How many "can't" have it, AFAIK, is not computable from the data. That 31% arguably, currently, can't, because there are only 12% women in the same age braket and situation and yet they don't choose them. So overall 49% / (31+49)% = 61% of the men who wish to be in a relationship actually manage to get in one, vs 68 / (12 + 68) = 85% of women. Relationship success gap = 24% . Failure rate : men vs women : 39% vs 15% : young (below 30) men are 2.5 times more likely than young women to look for a relationship without success.

ORIGINAL POST:

I thought it was the consensus but a recently removed post taught me otherwise.

Here is data from https://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2020/08/20/a-profile-of-single-americans/ (i also read the pdf at the bottom of the page)

  • between ages 18-29 , 51% men vs 32% women, are not in a relationship.
  • 61% of single men say they are currently looking for a relationship, compared with 38% of single women (all ages).
  • Among those who have been in their current relationship for less than three years, meeting online is just as common as meeting through friends or family (28% met online compared with 27% through friends or family). (all ages).

So we can deduce that: - for each 5 men there are 3 women available. - it's not that men aren't looking for a relationship, vice versa, it is women who aren't (making the gender ratio even worse). - If your opinion is based on a relationships which formed earlier than 3 years ago then keep it for yourself because online dating (based on a new technology called "the internet") is as influencial as friends and family, COMBINED. COMBINED! So when you mention "just socialize", keep that in mind.

So, please, let me know how easy it is for the average young man get on a dating site with a 10:1 gender ratio, to try to keep a girl which has his replacement one swipe away! (more probably already orbiting in her DMs as "kinder than my boyfriend").

Given this, even if he gets in a relationship, how would the power balance be? Would it be an equival relationship? Asking for a friend.

Finally, a few things to consider. In case you guys haven't noticed, America is not the center of the world anymore. There is no stream of poor women flowing towards the rich pockets of our superpower, allowing women to be hypergamous without leaving men singled out. Most billionaires are in China. There are no wars to send our men to die to.

Your amazing anecdotal experiences from your biased suburban social circle is of no use to the general younger public. A genius here put it perfectly : it's like saying that poverty does not exist because "all my friends have a job, even friends from my job have a job!". Even more accurate, since women follow money.

Disagree? Prove me wrong : find an explanation to that data which doesn't scream hypergamy all over.

EDIT: for those criticizing the fact that i have ignored the high older women "not looking" percentage: the age distribution of the partecipants is not given. The same is given only for 18-39, and not 18-29. The best datum I could use for "below 30" was the one calculated over "all ages". Got a better one? Correct me. Regardless, even if all single women were open for a relationship, little would change, because they are almost half the men: only if 100% of young single women would decide to date in their age bracket they could satisfy the demand for them ( .5 * .6 = .3 vs .3 * 1), but probably it's not going to happen because at least some of them would get absorbed by men already in a relationship, which is already the case.

EDIT: I computed this number in a comment, i'll leave it here: number of men vs women who want to be in a relationship: ( .49 + .51 * .61 ) vs ( .68 + .32 * .38 ) which is .801 vs .794.
