I have had this conversation with a few of my friends and we all agree that we are uncomfortable with walking behind a woman if we happen to be going in the same direction. I believe this comes from listening to women talk about how much harassment they face in the streets and how fearful they are when walking alone, especially at night.

It may sound extreme to think like this but I feel as though I am always perceived as a possible murderer or rapist just because of how fearful women supposedly are (and it doesn't help that I am black so there's that whole stigma to go along with it).

So I do as much as I can to avoid women who are by themselves when walking down the street because knowing that they are probably uncomfortable with a man walking behind them makes me uncomfortable. There isn't necessarily a lot I can do rather than walk slower (or faster and walk ahead of them if they are walking really slowly themselves).
