People with natural inclinations are fine.

The problem with gender roles is we are trying to steer people away from them, and being its not their nature in the long run they are unhappy.

Masculine women and feminine men are nothing new to the world, but telling women they should act more like men and telling men they are too "toxic" and need to act like women is the issue.

Most people here are highly, ridiculous against it. They believe AWALT and AMALT are iron clad.

Those of us who are in that 10% just roll our eyes and continue being happy in our untraditional relationships, where gender roles are a loose suggestion at best.

As is typical for JP, I think he's getting at something but the way he phrases things is way off. As a fan of psychometrics himself, I have no idea why he says "born with" when he knows that personality traits and sex hormone levels (which influence behavior in predictable ways) change throughout the life cycle.

I feel great. We are a gender bendy couple who doesn’t conform to gender roles at all. This is ideal for me as I’ve dated the guy who thought he was an alpha male enough times to be very over it.

Its very very very difficult to find a romantic partner when you dont conform to gender roles, as sexuality seems to be the only hiccup too getting rid of them.

If you find a man/woman who doesnt mind breaking the norm but still respects you sexually, then go for it and hopefully it works out

Don't ever let anyone make you think that you have to behave a certain way due to your gender. All that matters is that you live your life in a moral fashion. Other than that, just do what you feel is most comfortable. Don't try to be something you are not.

I don't buy the whole thing of gender roles. Obviously we are biologically different but I really hate the concept that men and women think and act some way. I like when people are true to themselves of course as long as they don't hurt others. Times have changed and they are changing. As long as people that grew up in community where a man was a sole provider and woman was SAHM are alive some people will think it was normal way to live. But a lot of younger people know it's impossible to afford everything with one income. No responsible woman is going to ditch her job to risk living in poverty with the kids to make her man fulfil "his role". Each individual person is different. I prefer to judge the person on the way they are not how the fit to a made up narrative about their gender role.

everything is "alright" but it can have sexual ramifications. i have a masculine aggressive high dominance choleric temperament, i had to find a man who was MORE masculine than me, which isnt easy now that men are all disgusting soyjack veals now. you can have a masculinized woman, feminized man relationship, but even in a masculinized woman she still has female sexuality and will be unsatisfied with a more feminine passive hypoagent man, even MORE than regular women who are lower dominance are

I’m generally fine with it. People should be able to express themselves the way they want.

That said, I also think we need to be clear with men the price they will pay for being gender nonconforming. Many people will still judge them in a social setting and almost no women will like them. If I had a more feminine son, I’d have a conversation along the lines of, “you do you, dude. Be who you want to be, but you need to realize this is how it’s probably going to impact your social life.”

Same applies to women, but we all know women get far more slack in being gender nonconforming. The more important thing here would be impressing on these women that masculine and domineering aren’t the same thing.

I prefer to ignore gender roles, or at least ignore the one I'm supposed to do. Trying to be feminine has gone terribly when I tried because it's not me and doesn't fit with what I want in a partner either. Despite what some people on this sub may tell you, some people are just awfully suited for their stereotypical gender role, and there's nothing wrong with that. You should do what makes sense for you and your relationship, not what fits with general trend for your gender.

I don't really care honestly. I'm not gonna tell a "feminine" man he has a moral obligation to provide for and a protect a gender that thinks he's scum. Nor am I going to tell a woman who wants to be independent that she should let a man handle everything for her.

I don't think traditional gender roles are being replaced by anything resembling a healthy relationship dynamic but I don't believe people should feel pressured into playing a part they never signed up for.

My friends in those demos do really poorly dating. It turns out most people have some idea of what their ideal partner is, and the most "alt" someone is willing to go is usually a couple of tattoos and a $50 haircut. Feminine men and Masculine women have some issues. Full on nonbinary types generally default to a kind of incel esque state unless they take steps not to very often.

I think, no one here really argues for socially enforced gender roles. It's more like, "if you want a traditionally masculine guy, you better be a traditionally feminine gal' or else you will likely to end up being commiserating".

There's a tendency in society to effeminate boys and emasculate girls to correct the supposed "power imbalances" and battle "toxic masculinity". You can do that, it's no question, but you can't change innate preferences. A masculine woman will still prefer masculine man and a feminine man still be better off with a feminine woman. This is not to say that all women and all men are "like that", but statistically speaking, this notion will result in increased number of wrecked relationships. Besides, given that more masculine women prefer men with higher masculinity traits, this results in more men being "pushed" toward the pathological end of masculinity.

Feminine + feminine works, feminine + masculine works... But masculine + masculine is a recipe for disaster.

From a social standpoint, the stigma of being a masculine woman and a feminine man is waning fortunately.

I don't think people should be harassed and bullied for not fitting their gender roles. And should be judged on their actions and interactions with other people.

But from an intimate and romantic perspective, not fulfilling those gender roles limits your options for sex and relationships if you are a straight man.

A good number of guys just do not emulate masculine traits because that is not naturally who they are as people. And not being able to be who you are can make you miserable.

FWIW, masculinity and femininity is not a binary thing. It is a gradient axis where people are placed. Some men are less masculine than other men but are more masculine than a majority of women.

It's not that I'm against it, it's the fact that it's mostly gonna suck for these feminine men. Masculine women still prefer masculine men even if they claim otherwise. These women have to choose one of two evils: Not getting things their way but attraction to their men is maintained, or getting things their way but the attraction is not maintained.

To answer your question, it depends on the context. I am friends with a few gay men and they're great company. Would I comfortably rely on them to back me up in the event of a physical altercation? No. They try to be diplomatic first (feminine trait, IMO) even when the other party is threatening violence. Conversely, I wouldn't want to go out alone with one of my more masculine female friends because she is very arrogant (a masculine trait, IMO) and is prone to picking fights when she's had too much to drink.

My opinion is romantic relationships thrive better when gender roles are fulfilled. Outside of that, do whatever makes you happy.

I don’t care how men or women whom I don’t have personal relationships behave. People should behave in a way that makes them happy and doesn’t harm others.

However, I would not date a masculine woman and I’m only friends with masculine men. I don’t look down on masculine women but I do tend to have a lack of respect for weak or feminine men, unless they have some sort of redeeming quality.

I really enjoy people who play around the realms of traditional femininity and masculinity! Maybe it’s all of the subcultures I like looking into, but it makes me smile when I see people styling beyond the binary… I think of punk/post punk subcultures and the men with their eyeliner and nails and lipstick and the women with short spiky hair and rectangular blazers! And they weren’t limited to that either, it was a blend of things. I find it really fun.

It’s totally fine, but it does tend to make their lives more difficult than they need to be. It’s not even their fault most of the time. What I can’t stand is when someone who’s just been a loser their entire life decides to adopt some new identify to try and score pity points. That’s where it gets pathetic. But nah if you’re just a soft guy or a tomboy there’s no problem with that in and of itself.
