I don't think so, that strike would have just as much likelihood of knocking you out open vs closed palm. The physiology behind why she was knocked out is actually really interesting! There are multiple ways that you can lose consciousness as a result of a punch or kick, but by far the most common is abrupt, excessive activation of the carotid sinus reflex. High in your neck (about the area that you feel your carotid pulse) your carotid artery bifurcates into the internal and external carotid artery. The spot where that bifurcation occurs is called the carotid sinus and is the single most important spot in the body for conveying to your brain what your current blood pressure is. When the carotid sinus gets squished (sorry for the medical jargon), the pressure inside the carotid sinus spikes through the roof for a second, and it sends a mayday message to the brain to drop the blood pressure immediately, which happens and since the blood pressure throughout the body wasn't actually high in the first place, the whole system shuts down. That cascade is called the carotid sinus reflex, and it's usually triggered in a fight when either a strike causes the head/neck to twist sideways (like in this video), compressing the carotid sinus, or when a punch causes the jaw to slide backwards and the carotid sinus is compressed by the angle of the mandible (this is what's happening when someone gets hit "on the button").

Closest thing I know is a ridge hand strike to the front of the neck/throat they teach in Japanese Jui-Jitsu (I was yellow belt in 1998, quit shortly after). Although it's probably won't knock someone out unless you're an expert it does hurt like hell and is very unpleasant.

I am not aware of any long term complications associated with the loss of consciousness associated with the carotid sinus reflex by itself (obviously things could be injured due to the strike or as a result of losing consciousness and falling). The loss of consciousness associated with the carotid sinus reflex is typically very brief (a matter of seconds), as the body is very quick to normalize the blood pressure.

The brain bouncing is absolutely one of the other mechanisms that a knockout can be induced by, but that type of knockout is more likely to be triggered by your head impacting against the concrete, etc. (and probably the most likely mechanism with head kick knockouts). The wiki page on knockouts mentions the temple as another target area for inducing traumatic loss of consciousness, and I imagine that the mechanism in that case would be cerebral bounce house.

"Pressure point' is not a medical term, it just means a spot on the body that can be manipulated in a certain way (pressed, massaged, poked, etc) to produce significant pain or other effects. Pressure points are used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine and in some martial arts. That area of the neck would be considered a pressure point I imagine because manipulating it does produce downstream effects (reduced heart rate and vasodilation).
I can't see why striking the neck at the area of the carotid sinus with the edge of your hand wouldn't work to cause someone to lose consciousness, but the lack of convincing footage from my quick google search has me skeptical. He could’ve walked away. She wasn’t rushing him, she didn’t have him cornered, and she never actually got close to hitting him. He chose to engage and slap her to sleep, and he made that decision the second he turned around.

There are a number of ways to knock someone unconscious beyond blunt shock trauma. You can palm uppercut someone's chin and compress the nerve where the base of the skull meets the spine, for example. Similarly, a good hit on the jaw will do the trick, fist or no. I think there's three major cranial nerves in the jaw.
Interestingly, there is an effect most easily observed in gunshot victims where the shock of the gunshot, rather than bodily injury, results in the body dropping even if the person retains consciousness. A good slap will achieve the same.

I had no idea you could get knocked out by a slap, just did not think they could generate the power required to overcome the cushioning that the fleshy skin provides.
I am average size and think I would have a great deal of trouble generating enough force to knock someone out with a slap, maybe a 10 year old but doubt a fully grown woman.
If it was his girlfriend getting beaten up then I can understand the over reaction, people panic in situations like that & I think if anyone I cared about was on the ground in danger then I would not be playing games with slaps regardless of if they hit me first or not. I’d call it a grey area. She attempted to put a hole in his head with a high heel but failed when he turned around. At that point if he wants to help his friend (I assume), he has to decide whether he ignores her, or lays her out so she can’t attempt to attack him again.
