This is the tragic result of the current housing crisis. More and more women are trapped in abusive relationships and rushed into things because of the crushing cost of living and wage gaps. Where I'm from (BC, Canada), you can't even get a run-down mobile home for under $250k, even in the suburbs. Condos start at around 500k for a studio. It's ridiculous, unless you wanna move to some backwoods middle of nowhere town isolated from friends and family with no job or career opportunities. Rent is often more than mortgage payments, but the bar is so high for first time buyers, banks won't give a mortgage even when you've been affording (a higher) rent for years.

I honestly support UBI simply for the fact that so many women will be able to leave their abusers. So many.
[–]cryptohoboFDS Newbie54 points55 points56 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
100%. I also believe it would seriously decrease the amount of women seeking work in the sex industry.
[–]likejackandsallyPickmeisha™️42 points43 points44 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s why so many people are against it. UBI makes it easier for people to get out of or avoid exploitative situations. Can’t feel superior if no one is below you.

It’s so terrible. Leases and high cost of living are the main proponent for codependent/abusive relationships. That’s why I don’t think moving in with a man is romantic because most of the time it’s for survival and not about fostering a closer bond.
[–]likejackandsallyPickmeisha™️122 points123 points124 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So true.
The only time I’ve lived with a man in the last 7 years was when I had a male roommate. There was never any romantic interest. No sexual tension. Just a straight up contract and purely platonic friendship. As soon as I was making enough to move out on my own, I did.
Harder to leave when it’s a boyfriend, especially an abusive boyfriend.

Same here in Australia. Obscene prices across the board. The only people I know who have bought property at my age (30s) have either recieved a large inheritance, or are part of a couple who both earn 6 figures or close to. As you mentioned, it's not the servicing of the loan that is the issue for most (as our rents are sky high too) - it's coming up with the 100k+ you need for a deposit WHILST paying that rent.
It used to be solely the largest metro cities but the unaffordability has spread to regional areas now :(

I remember there were derro areas no one wanted to live in growing up in nsw. Now those areas are 600k plus for an old fibro shit shack (4 hours from syd) Who the hell can afford those?
Im glad I had one kid who is 18 because starting over with a baby would be such a burden if I was renting. That sounds so awful but we all know how single mothers (ESP if theyre on centrelink) are treated by real estates.
[–]prizebeansproutFDS Newbie37 points38 points39 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I know right? But it's just Gen Y/Z being "entitled" to not want to have to travel 2 hrs work each day, whilst paying $1mil to live in a poorly designed shoebox in an amenity-less fringe suburb.

I was reading this article on abc about how western syd was too hot, like yeah obv we knew this 50 years ago but people just keep building concrete jungles out there and acting shocked it is hot af.
My grandparents lived out there because it was unpleasant to live in (so cheap) and they were poor.

Yeah I cannot believe the lack of foresight with some of these new developments. It is still "cram as many people in as possible" even in the most undesirable outskirts. My co-worker got one of these house + land packages and it's ridiculous - her house is literally BUTTING ROOFS with the house next door, it's that tightly packed. And for all this, she still has to DRIVE HALF AN HOUR just to get to the train station (then another hour on the train to work after that!).
If my commute is going to take that long, I'd at least expect some fucking privacy and some trees, jesus.

I'm desperate to purchase my own home.
The mortgage advisor actually stated finding a partner as the main tip for getting onto the housing ladder. This is in an area with minimal local amenities or vast career opportunities.
The other suggestions were begging parents for cash or hoping for the death of family members for the chance at an inheritance. Grim World.

[–]cowburnersFDS Newbie45 points46 points47 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
It is more than just high rent. It is poor pay, poor job security, a gender and racial imbalance that favors white males, leading to male bad behavior in all age ranges. This leads to difficulty finding a partner you can trust to raise a family with (and not risk ending up a single mother -- still no free or affordable day care here). There has been an alarmingly fast increase in the number of singles, especially amongst women over 40, as well as 60 year old men who have a property and who just want to "date" forever, usually much younger women (which they can do because of the gender imbalance). Then, even if you work for 30 years, if you are non-union, you won't get more than 1100 a month on CPP, although somehow unions manage to pay $50,000 pensions after 20 years (total government pension from all sources is $21,000 -- that is $10,000 less than minimum wage). A lot of single senior women are going to be living devastating poverty.

Yep, I'm renting in a backwoods, middle of nowhere town isolated from friends & family with no job or career opportunities. It's depressing, but affordable, but depressing. I noticed the locals who've grown up here have the lowest standards, both in quality of life & partners. There's a man I know who's excited about starting work stocking a grocery store & got a 2nd job working in a gas station burger place prepping. In my head I'm thinking, you're 50 yrs old & no career! There's some serious arrested development going on here.

This is so true. In some cities there are no properties someone on min wage could afford alone.
I'm always suggesting women teaming up to rent a place or having women roomies.
Buying property with a woman friend or 2 single mums could be an option to get on the property ladder.

I’m in Toronto I totally get what you mean. I definitely have the drive to keep working towards ownership one day on my own but honestly any homeowners I know are either in relationships OR have their parents help (or both!). I already make an average salary too. I always wonder how people making minimum wage even survive here
It can be terribly depressing. I love Canada but I definitely envy housing prices of other countries!

Yes. Most of my lower and working class acquaintances in my area are moving in and buying houses with boyfriends under the guise of "taking it to the next level" but really its cause they can't afford to live on their own AND have nice things.
[–]vmuzondiFDS Disciple[S] 139 points140 points141 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
You can really see it now because everyone who is losing jobs/money is suddenly in relationships and “so in love” they just need to move in together. It’s crazy.
[–]monivozFDS Newbie162 points163 points164 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I'd rather move back in with my parents than with a man out of economic fear. In fact my parents specifically told me their doors are always opened, that they don't want me negotiate sex(relationship) just to have a place to live.

Yep. I’m glad you have a support system because unfortunately a lot of women don’t and so they use the relationship as a form of survival. I see these stories everyday on the relationships reddit. Boyfriends/husbands exhibiting clearly psychopathic traits, but the woman is staying because of the lease, house, kids whatever and hoping he’ll change. It’s terrible.
[–]monivozFDS Newbie100 points101 points102 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
A support system is so crucial. These same girls have parents that own their own homes but their parents subtly let them know they would be a burden if they come back. WTF. Lets stop putting down countries where girl are made burdens at birth when we are doing similar in "developed" nations.
[–]BBQCoolRanchQueenFDS Apprentice42 points43 points44 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've been thrown to the wolves early by my family. Staying in relationships for survival is a cold, grim reality many women are facing. Girls are usually thrown to the wolves on their 19th (18th in some cases, whenever the legally defined adult age is depending on location) birthday often before even graduating highschool. That often throws a monkey wrench in post secondary education plans for many who've grown up in poverty or even middle class. The alternative to survival relationships is life on the streets, and we all know how grim the statistics are for homeless women.

[–]Summerisle7FDS Disciple70 points71 points72 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It’s so sad, because being lower or working class shouldn’t mean you can’t get married, be a real unit, face the world as a team and pool your resources for real. Ironically, it would probably help some of these women get further away from looming poverty. But pernicious libfem ideals have had the worst consequences on the most vulnerable populations.
[–]vmuzondiFDS Disciple[S] 57 points58 points59 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely. I wish we lived in a world where being lower class/poor didn’t mean you have to be extremely ruthless but the real world is so harsh. You just can’t trust anyone, especially men to have your best interests. Seeing the post earlier today talking about the patterns in dv relationships was so sad. I wasn’t surprised cohabitation was one of the top patterns.
[–]monivozFDS Newbie58 points59 points60 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I had the same belief too. That marriage was supposed to bring two people together against poverty. But then they start having children, and then the woman is working plus baby and her nagging pushes the man to have a foot out the door.......and OH GAWD.

If they can afford to buy a house then they can afford to live on their own. Doesn't sound like they're poor.
[–]monivozFDS Newbie37 points38 points39 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Oh no, they are not in poverty. They are working class. Like on their own they can only afford the rent but not much else, no luxuries. But together they can can afford a house payment if the man is doing overtime every week.
[–]Summerisle7FDS Disciple8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Summerisle7FDS Disciple22 points23 points24 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Agreed. They’d do better to rent somewhere by themselves, not buy a house with some guy. The only problem is, a lot of landlords are so bad, rental housing can be very insecure.
[–]butterflyhatcherFDS Newbie20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm all for women coming out ahead financially. If financially it makes sense and she has properly vetted him, it can benefit her greatly.
Not everyone wants to rent until they're 30+. Some people find good partners that pull their weight and more. I know of HVM partners that pay larger portions of the downpayment, rent and/or mortgage payments. It's really down to the couple's dynamic.

One tip I would give younger women who live in a high COL area is to invest young in your careers, and make sure you save money where you can, so you don’t have to rely on men later on to split housing costs.
I’m currently looking to buy a house, it’s eyewateringly expensive here, all the agents assume I’m buying with a partner....I’m like, what partner? Don’t need one 🤷♀️

I’m so thankful I can buy without a second person, it won’t be a dream house or anything but will be big enough for me and hopefully in a nice location. If I hadn’t saved since I started earning, there is no way I could do it alone.
[–]PessimisticAnaFDS Newbie8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Currently studying and part timer so I'm hoping to save like you, unfortunately I also live in a high cost city so I worry about if I can afford a place in the future.
Good for you though, I don't know many women that buy property for their own sake.
[–]EquipoisonousFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I just went into contract for a small house. I was only casually looking but this one fits literally everything I was looking for so I decided to go for it. I feel a little weird buying a house while single, it’s the perfect size for me but may be a little cramped for second person, but definitely manageable as long as he doesn’t insist on having a “man cave” or something.
[–]i_said_what_i_said_FDS Apprentice1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Congratulations! I have found men drop the insistence on the “man cave” when it’s them who have to pay for it.

This is such a sad mentality and one men use to their advantage. If you are on your own, stay there. If you have a support system, use them. I hate to see these IG post and TikToks and various other posts in which men say all the right things and do half of these things to women seeking something, just to sit back and wonder why the ring isnt coming, or why they dont care or why they move on with another quickly and "treat her better" giving her everything you begged and hoped and prayed for.
More women would get less hurt if they asked themselves and these men "why does he need me..." before jumping so quickly into situations that are not love.

Public housing in my country (Singapore) costs about $400k on average (that’s if you live in the suburbs). It goes for $800k in the city. I always found it strange that you had to be married to be applicable for public housing. If you’re single, you can only purchase public housing from the government if you’re 35 and older. Not to mention that you won’t be applicable for most subsidies, considering they’re targeting married couples with children.
Many of my batchmates get into relationships and end up marrying the guy just so they can move out of their parents’ house. This isn’t uncommon and I’m currently studying in the 11th best university in the world. It’s even worse for uneducated/lower income folks who really have no choice but get married and spawn children with LVM.
In case you’re wondering, renting a room costs about $1000 in a public housing flat. There’s also no minimum wage where I live, so most people can’t even afford that.

Are there condos in your area that are going for 150k?
This is some of the financials around whether you can afford it. I believe many of you can.
https://www.saving.org/down-payment/150000
If you're able to get $7500 for a down payment, your mortgage is $700/monthly.

I can’t remember the last time any piece of real estate in my province was that cheap.
[–]Suspicious-Leg-1407FDS Apprentice15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True. I live in a big city... I searched for condos under 150k and only found them once my search radius was 20 miles outside of the city.
Unless you're insanely wealthy, there are always tradeoffs in RE.
[–]mostly_ok_nowFDS Newbie31 points32 points33 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There ain't a shack made out of asbestos that's on fire going for 150k anywhere near my state. My 1,600 sq ft basic ass house was 370k. And I had to live with my abusive parents through my 20's to save for the downpayment. Rent here is even more than a mortgage so this was the only option I had to get myself into a safe situation long term.
[–]miloba_FDS Newbie17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Sadly where I am (bigger city in the US), $150K isn’t realistic for real estate either, not to mention all the extra costs that creep up. For example, the listing prices of some condos may seem reasonable where I’m from...until you see $250-500 (!!!) monthly HOA fees. There’s also condo/homeowners insurance, property taxes, PMI (if providing less than 20% down), etc.
It’s terrible. I just went through the home buying process for the first time 2 weeks ago myself, and I have a good job with an above average salary who saved diligently for years. It was still SO stressful. It is insanely hard going into it alone if you’re in a competitive market (if you’re going resale instead of new builds) because you’re likely up against multiple other offers, some of whom may come from couples (who may have more flexibility to negotiate higher).
Have you closed yet? I’ve just entered into contract last week and did the inspection Friday. A little overwhelmed. Nothing major came up, but a lot of little things. It’s definitely stressful going through this process alone, but I’m so excited to be a homeowner.
[–]miloba_FDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I feel you! I haven’t closed yet; we’re hoping to have it done by mid-February. Currently in the underwriting part of the process and concurrently have been working with and reviewing quotes for home security and condo insurance. I’ve also been getting set up with the HOA to get the official transition signed off on their side.
It’s A LOT. The inspection hasn’t taken place yet but will soon. I’m anxious but know it’ll be worth it in the long run. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to chat or vent! It helps to talk through it with someone ❤️

The HOA fees at my condo are almost that much. It covers the water and cable/internet, so there’s that... HOA fees + taxes are significantly more than that. It’s 1 bedroom and nothing is plated in gold.
[–]Suspicious-Leg-1407FDS Apprentice2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Girl, I hear ya. Where I am the condo hoa's range from 170/mo to 1500/mo.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
150k?! Midwest USA maybe? I’m on the west coast and the cheapest condo I’ve ever seen was $200K, and it was in a super sketch area of town. A decent condo goes for $250k or more, and houses minimum $400k (but usually higher since inventory is so low). We have a true housing crisis in this country.
[–]finance_ladyFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Condos are often a first choice for singles but I’m so glad I ended up with a single family home instead in a non-HOA neighborhood. HOA fees can be very high and they can raise them at any time. Plus depending on the type of condo, they can charge additional assessments on top of the normal HOA dues, like if they decide to renovate the community pool or put all new roofing on all units or something. Everyone has to split the cost and cover it. There are also a lot of HOA bullying nightmare stories if you Google for them. Things can get WAY political really quickly on the board of those things. Nope, I’ll pass...lol
