Economics majors (66 percent male) have a median income of $70,000; for sociology majors (68 percent female) it is $40,000." This quote right here is super important. The lumping of primarily lower paid jobs dominated by women with much more difficult majors shows some of the blatant discrepancy right there.

Isn't there a possibility that this belief causes a significant number women to honestly believe they'll get paid less, thereby causing them to negotiate lower salaries and perpetuate the myth?

weird, I was watching colbert reports i'd tivo'd or whatever they call it now, and a lady came on talking about the wage gap and all that, and she cited how hard it is for her to pay her bills as proof that women are paid less than men, to me it just shows that like most americans, shes been hit hard by the way things are right now.

One thing that never seems to be explained, when people counter the whole "choices argument" with: "Well, they aren't really their own choices" is this:

1) I'll just state the obvious and say.. once again feminism treats women like children who are completely incapable of rational thought.

2) Whose to say that more money is always better? It just seems completely arbitrary to me. Why is a harder degree and harder job for more money (and more stress) objectively better than the opposite? I mean, back to the choice thing... but if they are choosing it, then there is obviously some advantages. They don't just pay more for no reason.

But isn't the unexplained gap, albeit far less than the endlessly publicized 23 cents, still a serious injustice? Shouldn't we look for ways to compel employers to pay women the extra 5-7 cents? Not before we figure out the cause.

The main remaining feminist myth seems to be the claim that "society is telling women to make these choices".

This sort of fails to take into account the fact that feminism is the prevailing social norm.

This is not at all dissimilar from christians yelling that they are being oppressed.

Hey guys, can you help me? I'm being discriminated against at work.

I just got a new job. Only been there two months now. My counterpart, who does the exact same job as me on the opposite shift, makes $3/hour more than I do. Nevermind the fact that she's been with the company 12 years and me only 2 months. That part is irrelevant. The point is, we're doing the same job and she's getting paid more.

So, obviously I'm being discriminated against because matriarchy. Who can I sue and when?

Women's groups will counter that even if most of the wage gap can be explained by women's choices, those choices are not truly free. Women who major in sociology rather than economics, or who choose family-friendly jobs over those that pay better but offer less flexibility, may be compelled by cultural stereotypes

That was pretty much my thought throughout the entire article, are the women really choosing thos jobs because they want to? Or because our culture perpetuates the idea that certain jobs or degrees are not for women.

However she then went onto say that feminists need to "prove rather than dogmatically assert that women's choices are not free". Though to be fair to feminist groups, it is difficult to prove an abstract, unconscious thought.

"The AAUW is a misandric, female supremacist organization. Unfortunately for them, at some point, they have to at least pretend to be scholarly since they represent university women. Reports having been coming out for at least a decade (including from mainstream sources) showing very clearly that the feminist wage gap howlings were factually wrong propaganda. Only know, with its tiny remaining dignity and efforts to masquerade as scholarly threatened, does the AAUW (at least partly) own up to what they have known to be true for many years. Shame on the AAUW."

The AAUW researchers looked at male and female college graduates one year after graduation.

Not all workers. Only college graduates who graduated one year ago.

This is reasonable considering they are the American Association of University Women.

The results of their study is that after just one year in the workforce, there is a 6.6 cent gap. Among college graduates.

That says nothing about after 2, 3, 5, 10, or 20 years. It also says nothing about people who didn't go to college.

The only choices controlled for in the AAUW study are things such as women choosing more flexible careers because they may want to have kids someday; but not actually the choice to have kids or the choice to work less to watch kids.

In the cases where they do, why do women work less hours than men? Because they're lazy? Because they hate work? Because they just wanna have fun? Because their husbands/boyfriends expect them to cook dinner?

Regardless, page 2 of the AAUW study says:

When we compare the earnings of men and women who reported working the same number of hours, men earned more than women did. For example, among those who reported working 40 hours per week, women earned 84 percent of what men earned. Among those who reported working 45 hours per week, women’s earnings were 82 percent of men’s. Finally, when we control for economic sector, again men typically earned more than women did. In the two largest economic sectors—the for-profit and government sectors—men earned significantly more than women did one year after college graduation.

So even when women work the same amount as men, that more work doesn't translate into better pay equity, but actually worse.
