To straight, male MRAs in relationships: Has your stance on men's rights had any impact on your relationship? How does your wife/girlfriend view your opinions?

My wife is all for all things mra. We have a son, she's as worried about his future as I am. I haven't actually noticed any hostility regarded mens rights from many women I've known - though obviously I must be filtering. Conversely most men are against the idea even if they have a lot of complaints regarding unequal dating conditions etc.

I think my girlfriend sees both sides of the coin. She sees feminism for what it really is. It didn't take much to convince her that men's rights is a legitimate movement. I just did it slowly and pointed out the hypocrisy as it came up.

She works with more women than men. Her boss is a woman. It didn't take much to convince her that there aren't systematic biases against women in the workplace. She's seen how disruptive it is when women decide to take time off to have children; she's also seen how men are forced to tread incredibly carefully around issues like that.

In school her class was 85% female, so she saw that there wasn't a systematic bias agaisnt women in education. And that there were support services for women but not men. She gets it.

But she is also in favor of women's rights (not feminism, women's rights); I think we should all be in favor of that too. Women have it great in the first world, but some women are really not treated like human beings. That isn't to say that men aren't treated terribly in those places too! But I think we can all agree that men and women both suffer and have different crosses to bear.

Varies. I've become more demanding and less-trusting in my relationships. For the first times, I started a few break-ups and did some pushing people away. Now I'm not so unforgiving and outright hostile towards abusive behaviour, but I'm still not wasting my time with "hopeless" cases.

Oddly, the fewer relationships I had have been of greater quality. Apparently, some ladies dig when they get kind of proven to be open minded, good hearted and nice enough to end up with me. They know I'm not gonna jump into bed with the first push-hard-bimbo.

Then again, I have become pretty bad in compromising. My views on marriage and lesser trust towards my partners have led me to break up for the wrong reasons. I ended some of the best relationships of my life just because I was starting to get too afraid of commitment and for the lack of my negotiating freedom in "potential accidents". They were ticking and I misjudged it as a time bomb. Right now I think I would probably not have minded a family with either of them.

Definitely been some strain on my relationship. I've had to keep it to myself because the only reaction I get - no matter how calmly I present studies and nothing else - is a kind of nervous apprehension. It's honestly the worst response I can imagine. Just this unspoken kind of 'is he crazy?' sort of vague thing. The only point I've made a stand on is that I will absolutely not agree to marriage until we both understand the legal precedents that put me in an extremely vulnerable position (i.e. my life in her hands).

Our conversations always boil down to: She only seems to respond with "well why don't you trust me? I wouldn't do those things." (custody, divorce, etc) and I can only ask her "I'd never drive off with everything you own, but would you feel comfortable putting it all in a U-Haul and giving me the key?"

Then she asks "Well, if you have a key and all my stuff's in that truck, what if we have a fight and you decide to drive off mad?"

And I say "exactly"

But we keep ending up at this line of thought and going nowhere...

I'm single, but I haven't had problems with it in the past. If you frame it properly, most women are sympathetic to the men's issues, especially stuff like the suicide rate and workplace deaths.

My mother and sister are also supportive.

Even my ex wanted to avoid family court because she knew how messed up it is. We worked out custody outside of that system.

I'm in a 2.5+ year relationship that will almost definitely end in marriage.

She's supportive of most reasonable MRA goals, about the only exception I can think of is banning circumcision, and I suspect that growing up Jewish had some influence on that.

She always understood, but she became especially sympathetic when a neighbor falsely accused me of abusing her, and the cops took the neighbor's word for over her own. They told her that, since too many women lie in abusive situations, she simply couldn't be trusted. She had been trying to pass a kidney stone and was screaming in pain in the bathroom, which shared an adjoining wall with the neighbor's apartment. To this day, I have never once intentionally caused another person physical harm.

My wife and I see eye to eye on the MRA stuff. She has also pointed out some legitimate grievances, but I think they relate more to the perception that I am 100% in control financially and do not consider her input, than to the fact that she is a woman.

IE when we go to restaurants, even though we eat at the same table, I may get better service and better food, so when it comes time to make a tip, we both pick numbers and I average them, unless her service was SUPER TERRIBLE which it has been sometimes, then I leave little/no tip.

I've had cases where waiters/waitresses noticed I was out of a drink, or suggested things, or made sure my food was high quality, while at the same time given her low quality food or neglected her drink. Last time we were at Chili's, I got the best burger I have ever had, cooked exactly as I requested it, and she got fajita meat cooked incorrectly and seemingly flavored with dirt (I tried it, it reeeeeally tasted like dirt, which is strange as I've had the same dish before and liked it). Also, some of her cheese was moldy. When she asked for new cheese, the waitress got all pissy. When her desert came, also messed up, I requested it be fixed, and it was quickly, politely and got me a discount. My perception of the service was great, her's was poor, the tip was low because I don't like it when servers neglect my wife.

I've hit sort of a road block when I try to talk to my girlfriend about these types of things. She's really into feminism (her major in college) and pretty much refuses to talk about such touchy topics to avoid fighting.

She is a redditor and we both share the same ideas about human rights.

But before her it was chaos. I every single girl I ever dated got mad because I couldn't read their minds, they never say what they are thinking and wait till they explode. They feel they deserve a better treatment because they are women and that I should already know it. Most girls get offended when you ask them to pay half the bill.

Arguing about feminism and men's rights was painful. All the conversation ended with 'You can't know since you are not a girl'. Ohh never expect an apology even if they know they are wrong. And you are mean if you point that out.

Now I have a girl who can actually communicate, when we have discussions its never heated, more like a sane debate. She admits it when she is wrong and so do I. We both hate gender exclusive language and the female centred laws that are getting approved world wide.

I think it's raised my awareness of the acceptability of violence or violent innuendo toward men. I'll give two examples.

Women have playfully (they really mean no harm) hit me all my life. I'm in pretty good shape and I understand that this is the they're flirting and probably think I like it. But in the last few years, I've started calling them out on it. I've been with my girlfriend six months and she's hit me twice. Never in anger. She's a great person. But if I've said something sarcastic or whatever, she slapped me on the back of the head. I think many women do this to their boyfriends.

But the thing is, it's not acceptable to hit anyone. We live in a culture where that basic concept is instilled in men, but not women. So I don't get angry when she does it. I recognize that this is a product of the culture she grew up in. I look her in the eyes and I say, "it's not okay for you to hit me" she apologizes, and we move on. But in the past, I would have just laughed it off.

Second example: last Friday night we were out and about and wandered into a little shop. She started looking at some shoes and I didn't say anything because I honestly don't really care. But when she asked my opinion, I said I didn't like them. They just didn't seem all that great to me. The only reason I could give was, "well, they're too pointy"

The saleslady, worried that she was going to lose a sale because I had opened my mouth, said "ha! we'll show him what we can do with pointy shoes" and pretended to kick me in the groin. I gave her a little speech and we left.

I think that was reading MRA articles has given me is:

awareness. I actually notice these things now
language. I know how to describe them. I can speak to the saleslady in a way that makes it clear I know what I'm talking about. I'm not reacting emotionally to her. I'm rational, articulate, and passionate, and I'm ready when she tries to deflect by saying, "oh you're a big boy, you can take it"
confidence. I realize I don't have to accept these things. I'm not worried about being called less of a man because I wasn't stoic and long-suffering.

She's shares almost all the same MRA views as I do and is just as anti-feminist if not more so. She knows that the wage gap is a myth, doesn't deny the fact that women choose to stop working to raise kids and that harms companies (maternity leave, etc.

But she's also supports women's rights, pro-choice etc.

I'm lucky I found her.

Interestingly I read a few disheartening articles today that made me a little more pessimistic than I usually am. It made text my girlfriend, and I actually told her how lucky I am to have someone like her. She is definitely supportive.

My girlfriend was nominally feminist when we first got together, now she calls herself an "egalitarian."

We don't agree on everything, but I've brought her around on a few issues. She used to deny that false allegations of rape/abuse and DV against men were serious problems. She has since changed her tune.

She now realizes that women have near absolute legal supremacy in heterosexual relationships. If she ever wants me out the house, she just has to phone the police and tell them that she's "frightened." She'll get an order of protection, and I'll be stuck paying the rent for an apartment that I cannot legally enter. If we ever have kids, she can remove me from their lives forever, just as easily. Thankfully, she's an extremely kind and reasonable person and I can trust her not to do these things, but not all men are so lucky.

She, in turn, has moderated some of my positions over the years. I'm more sympathetic to issues like the street harassment of women than I used to be, as it was an issue I had previously dismissed as trivial.

Overall, things work well. We've been together since before I really became concerned about men's rights. I've only been actively following the movement for about 2 years, and we've been together for 4.

We pretty much agree on everything. Both of us are educated in science, so we can argue and correct our consensus view. Being experienced in the hard science of biology, my girlfriend is much more trigger-happy to shoot down feminist arguments than I am; I appreciate liberal arts more and I try to understand all viewpoints. I think men get blamed of bigotry so often that they check their privilege automatically, which may contribute to why I restrain myself from harsh rhetorics.

Our consensus is that it can't really be contested that in Finland, being a man is a lot more dangerous and makes you suffer 6-13 months of slavery. Even my mother felt in the 80s that it would have been easier to have daughters, because boys have more trouble in school, more gender based expectations, and eventually have to serve in the army. As a feminist she thought that women were oppressed in the workplace, but this was based on the propaganda that a man's euro equals woman's 80 cents - she was genuinely surprised when I corrected her. However, it is still true that some small employers might discriminate based on pregnancy fears, although it is illegal.

I'm not really a card-carrying MRA, though, and I don't think I've ever felt oppressed. I typically describe myself as an egalitarian.

My wife of 20 years and I are educated professionals. She out earns me by 1.5x. She never really considered mens situation until I became interested in MR. Having been educated in a primarily female dominated field (Healthcare), she has difficulty believeing the bigotry she sees on a daily basis. I actually have to talk her down occasionally. Two of my nieces (Urban Police Officer, Childrens services.) are on-board with MR also. They both watched their brothers get worked over by the system and now see it as it is. They all know that I would never stand for a man treating a woman badly, that is probably where the credibility of MR began for them. Sometimes I fear I have created some monsters. These are extremely intelligent and semi-agressive women, I pity the princess that tangles with them.

The key for winning minds is calm, rational, tone and appealing for empathy. If I detect aggitation or someone sees me as being accusatory, I back off and let the wife follow-up. Sometimes I just drop the subject, I want to talk and reason, arguing is not reasoning.

My ex was a crazy misandrist before dating me (she obviously hid it until we were official). She wasn't used to her b/f's calling her out on it. She called men weak, hung out with obvious feminist sexists, wanted me to follow behind her in public and then dominate her in the bedroom (best of both worlds, in my opinion. Lay back and let someone else fuck you and then go in public and have a pet). She also said that she usually breaks up with her boyfriends within a week of dating. Like a testing period or something.

Obviously, I never did the public/private switch and called her out on how degrading that is. "What? You get to dominate me in bed!" Um, sex isn't everything and I won't advertise to the world that I'm your little pet bitch. Imagine if I asked you to do that."

This was within the first week of us dating. I honestly think she was just testing the boundaries and see how far her new male pet would go. I didn't move an inch and told her that if she didn't see me as an equal there's the door. Awkward silence was followed by nodding agreement. She knew I was serious and I am not such a desperate loser that I'd put up with that shit just to get some ass. I was apparently grossly underestimated. She eventually came around. We didn't break up after a week (I actually was the one to ask after a week).

By the end of the relationship, she was agreeing with me on many MRA issues and even started frequenting mensactivism.org with me. I never treated her any less than an equal. We split chores, we alternated paying for dates, I treated her with respect.

I think healthy exposure to MRA views makes a man more willing to stand up for himself. Why? It's not that he views women as inferior (like SRS would have you believe), it's that he values himself equal to women and gets insulted that she would see it any different. Not only insulted, but willing to fucking call it out.

In my latest relationship I was lucky enough to be with a woman who pretty much stood right with me on most of the issues unfairly affecting men today, but I realize not everybody is that fortunate. So I ask, just out of curiosity, how does your SO see your views on MRA issues? Do they encourage it and support it or trivialize the issues and think belittle the movement?

I haven't had any issues, my girlfriend actually shares the majority of my views. That isn't to say that we don't disagree on some items but we've agreed that our disagreements won't effect our relationship and since neither of us are looking at starting a family we usually just don't discuss the points that cause tension.

To answer your first question, my SO views our conversations regarding MRA issues as constructive, but oftentimes takes the conversations we have personally. We've been dating for a couple of years now, and even though the majority of our conversations are rehashes or continuations of previous ones, I still qualify most of my statements and observations with, "I'm talking about women, but I'm not specifically referring to you. Rest assured that I'm not singling you out or manipulating you through ambiguous talking points."

It's hard for women to be pro-MRA with their pro-MRA SO because our observations often include generalizations, both good and bad, about women, women's behavior, women's reactions to situations, etc.

To better understand their perspective, imagine being a black man dating a white woman and consider how difficult it would be for the man to discuss observations and generalizations about white people. Even if he has objective, reasonable arguments, the observations still hinge largely on white people as a race. Would you take it personally? Can you see how some may take it personally?

The vast majority of the time things are taken personally - it's to be expected - and understanding this point is the best place to start when approaching these topics with the opposite sex, IMHO.

To answer your second question, yes and no. She finds it hard to support issues when I word them in an "us vs. them" sort of way, because I've made the mistake of drawing lines in the sand and pitting men against women, and as I stated above people can't help but take something personally when the observation or statement carries with it a generalization belonging solely to people with whom they share a common trait. However, when I discuss MRA issues from the egalitarian perspective, she finds it easier to understand my observations, analyses, and subsequent conclusions.

I won't say it boils down entirely to language, but it certainly has a hell of a lot to do with it, and it certainly has a hell of a lot to do with making sure you're not having an "us vs. them" conversation.

That said, I consider myself extremely lucky because we've tackled everything from the inherently flawed institute of marriage to her relationship with her parents (PAS from the mother, subsequent estranged relationship from the father). When we first met, she was absolutely adamant about marriage, unwittingly manipulative, etc. Personally, I think this is where a lot of men derail and write women off, and women derail and start thinking men are trying to deprogram/reprogram women into doing what we want them to do. Some MRAs can't help but think Feminists are trying to change them to better serve Feminism, and some are, and some Feminists can't help but think MRAs are trying to change them to better serve Men's Rights, and some are. But some aren't. We forget about that "some aren't" bit far too easily, too quickly. There's a world of difference between changing a person to better serve your own wants and needs, and identifying a person's flaws in order to help them work towards bettering themselves.

I've had conversations with friends, both male and female, who think that I'm being oppressive. Some of them, usually women, think that I'm being abusive and manipulative - the very things I'm against - just to change my SO into the type of person I want her to be. If they had a point, if they had a reasonable argument, then I have no doubt our relationship would have collapsed under the weight of my supposed tyranny.

Except the exact opposite has happened.

Together we've agreed that marriage is a legal catastrofuck in waiting, and that we'll form a civil union instead. Together we've agreed that we'll share the finances and invest together in such a way that if we split, Zeus forbid, each person will be able to take what belongs to them, extract their investments cleanly, and go their separate way without involving lawyers or mucking about with prenups.

And there's compromise, plenty of compromise. I'm wholly against marriage - all of it - everything from the rings to the papers. However, she is unwilling to let go of the engagement ring, wedding ring, and ceremony. So the compromise is that I will not sign a marriage certificate, but she will not enter a civil union without an engagement and a traditional ceremony. Also, my engagement ring is a 67 Mustang of equal or lesser value. It sounds silly, but it's a compromise we both reached and we're both happy with, and it came after years of debate, understanding, compromise, and love.

Well, sorry for that tangential Hallmark moment...back to the topic at hand...

She does encourage me, she does entertain civil debate regarding MRA issues, she is aware, and she does give a damn. Any instance of her trivializing the issues or belittling the movement is usually me taking it personally and mistaking her apathy for disdain and hatred of all things MRA. Be sure you're not making the same mistake, it's a very easy mistake to make.

On the same note, I also encourage her, and we debate about women's rights as well. I'm aware, and I do give a damn, and if she's willing to accept criticism on her ideals then I should be willing to do the same. We try to maintain a healthy level of love and respect, and it is hard sometimes, but rejecting decades of indoctrination doesn't happen over night for either gender.

If there's just one thing I'd like for other men and women to take away from all of this, it's that you shouldn't be so quick to write off a potential SO because of the beliefs they have right now. People learn, people change. You should try to find someone who's capable of critical thought and is willing to compromise without sacrificing their core beliefs. Be willing to stick to your guns for weeks, even months, if you truly believe you're in the right and have the evidence to back it up, and be willing to admit defeat and change if they stuck to their guns, stuck by their evidence, and ended up having the more reasonable, logical conclusion.

The funny thing is, a lot of the angry MRAs and angry Feminists who are tearing at each other's throats in some of these conversations would probably be great together if they would only practice a little humility, be willing to give to get, and understand that Rome wasn't built in a day.

tl;dr - be diplomatic, more lenient, and more willing to compromise when it comes to MRA/Feminist perspectives in a relationship. Your SO isn't an opponent down at the debate hall, so try to avoid treating these types of conversations that way.

I have multiple regular sexual partners, so I don't know if "wife/girlfriend" really applies, but all of them tend to see eye to eye with me on most men's rights issues.

The case for most of our positions is pretty persuasive if the listener can get past the twin stereotypes of "this guy must be a conservative reactionary stuck in the past", and "this guy must be a bitter, paranoid misogynist".

I find there's a lot of anti-feminist women out there... not reactionary Jesus-freaks, but independent, self-willed women who realize they owe their independence to technology rather than ideologues, who don't want special protections written into law for them, who see special kid-glove treatment for women as a "tyranny of low expectations", and who see men as human beings.

Talk to such a woman, and it's not hard to get the idea through that forced circumcision is a bad thing, that fighting in wars is not a privilege, and that perhaps we, too, deserve the right to choose whether we want to be parents.

They are really receptive and supportive, partially because I'm not a stranger saying strange things. They know I treat women respectfully and without double standards and we all like to call out double standards.

Well... my girlfriend is a self described feminist; So we've had some arguments on the matter. Although I wouldn't call myself a MRA as I would call myself an Egalitarian: I've been very careful about what I say around her.

Part of the problem I've had is that she gets very impassioned by feministic arguments and is very emotional on the issues, so I have to be gentle in talking to her about these things. Things that affect both men and women and is harmful to both. She was raised by a single dad who was assaulted by his drunken ex-wife so she easily agrees with me when she's calm. When she's not, she won't listen to any sense of reason.

When she's angry; she's very quick to trivialize what you and I probably have all been through. As well she sees things like MensRights and such as a direct assault on feminism and is very quick to antagonize, although I don't think this is unfair, after all, a lot of you I don't agree with as well.

Things are hard when you want to treat people fairly.

A decent woman is capable of understanding why misandry is an important issue. However I've only ever known of maybe two women who are die-hard MRAs: Hestia and girlwriteswhat. All other females have had some reservations, an inability to fully see the truth before them. Most women are simply too solipsistic to really grasp truths that question themselves. Meanwhile there are countless men who are capable of seeing the full truth before them, but they also are still a minority.

With that said, you're very unlikely to find a woman who really fully understands what this is all about. If you're a casual fan who fancies himself an egalitarian, you'll probably be able to find a gal who also fancies herself one. If you're more of an MRA who realizes that men and women are not equal, you'll have a slightly harder time, but it's not impossible. You'll just have to realize that it's very unlikely you'll find a woman who is on board with you on everything, as women are generally incapable and also not very interested. But you really don't need a woman to agree with you on everything, after all, generally if you're getting advice from your woman on men's rights issues you aren't doing it right. A woman has no right to tame your views based on what she feels is socially acceptable, and if you have one trying to censor you like this, this means she cares more about social perception than she does about you.

When you're a very perceptive and truth-seeking "MRA" like me, who cannot help but point out the misandry and leftist foolishness when watching TV, your woman might become irritated occasionally because she has been indoctrinated by western culture to be unable to separate herself as an individual from women as a group, and so any criticism of women as a whole she will take personally. You just have to find a woman who is capable of dealing with that, and realize that since you're not going to learn anything about these issues from her, since the manosphere is far and away ahead of most people on these issues, it doesn't really matter if she understands everything, as long as she sticks by you and supports you. You must also understand that it's not necessary to bombard her with information that she won't really fully grasp or care about, either. She will generally never be as passionate about these issues as you are, which is why most of the time she ought to be in a merely supportive role.
