I have a STEM degree - still remember being bombarded with how we need more women in STEM... Why? Everyone is allowed to apply we should take the best candidates regardless of gender/race/any other irrelevant feat (regarding STEM) of the applicant. One professor even suggested women should be salaried students to encourage them.

Also: noone ever suggested STEM studies for me neither or is it a calling for me - I made rational decision post HS based on my own research of programs.

In my country our high school are divided into science, business, arts etc.

(I was a math major) My class had 50 students in total, out of which 47 were male.

(My friend was an art major) they had 50 students too, but 43 females and 7 males.

No body discouraged anyone from joining the math major, they just didn’t want to.

The engineering company I work for pays bonuses if you can attract women candidates. All female CVs are forwarded to the head of HR for special treatment. The universities are also considering reducing the entry score for women in STEM courses. Eg civil engineering might have an entry score of 90, except its 75 if you’re a woman.

I actually did a research project for a class on this a few years back and the biggest reason for women to not be in STEM was other women. Starting all the way back in kindergarten. Many teachers have already decided girls like different things than boys when in reality at that age it’s roughly an even split. Then moving forward through school and on to college when they see that STEM careers are predominantly men some start dropping and switching degrees then it gets progressively worse through the college years as more and more leave the programs. Moving onto the career side. The small amount that end up going through with it and getting hired are shunned by their female coworkers at an alarming rate. Many women who leave the field place at least some blame on other women. When they did interviews with the older women in the field they claimed it was a right of passage in their eyes that they had no help. So women have it hard from day one of school and it just gets worse as you go through your education but it’s not because of men it’s because of other women. It wasn’t the answer my teacher expected but when he saw my research and the work I put into it he was genuinely surprised. I take a lot of pride in making sure I get my facts straight and that was one where even I was surprised.

TLDR: women aren’t in stem because of other women but I recommend you read it.

This reminds me of the study they did with the Philadelphia city bus drivers. It was a union, city job so pay should be totally equal. What the study found was that men volunteered for more holiday and overtime shifts while women didn’t. Interestingly enough, their reasons were the same for making opposing decisions - “for my family”. I’ll see if I can find the article.

I go to a school that is 60% female. all of Stem is a quarter of the majors here where most are communication, drama related, and business are the top three. My girlfriend is one of literal 10 women seniors in civil engineering here. I'm a woman and I'm currently studying CS on college and I HATE that other women say "but women don't study maths or engineering in college because *insert excuse here*" then they go and study history or geography or any other humanities. Then I had to go to college and they have some lecture with some woman talking the same shit about why there is no women in my course but SHE DIDN'T HAVE A CS MAJOR, SHE IS A PSYCHOLOGIST. It's easy to say big shit then go to a course with majority of girls, instead of studying some stem course and also having NO friends while even the gay boys have their own little group of friends in class.

The only time I ever saw weird treatment of women in my STEM job was due to having a woman manager that didn't think women could handle working with the men. She refused to hire a woman no matter how well qualified. It was an embarrassment.

Meanwhile, every guy could have cared less. It was a small shop at the time (it's massive now) so we discussed it quite a bit with everyone and no one objected. Reminds me of my high school. There was a robust program in place to actively encourage more girls to take STEM subjects at A-level (the highest school level in the UK), but even though as a result the numbers of girls in the STEM classes was above the national average, they were still well outnumbered by boys taking those subjects. Most girls, given the choice and even encouragement, still chose not to take any STEM subjects. I believe a few did actually go on to pursue gender studies at university, too...

I was a woman in STEM. I left because of misogyny.

Specifically, I left because my boss disagreed with mothers working out of the home, and he was backed up by the higher ups. He was fine with women working, but not mothers. Of course I thought about suing, but after looking into it, they played dirty and the victories that were won against them by other women were hard fought and really ugly. Most of us just leave quietly if we can't get ahead, or are forced out.

I still use my scientific training and science degrees, but in a different field interfacing with scientists. There remains a lot of work to be done.

Also, I somewhat agree with that statement, although I don't think it's directly misogyny, there are some stigmas and taboos like how the fact that stem areas are mostly occupied by men, is in itself a factor for woman not choosing stem field areas, because they might feel uncomfortable and alone, I've experienced this first-hand.
