I used to think "socialization" had a strong impact on how people develop. I still think it plays a part, but I think biology plays a much larger role. Anyone who's still open minded about the whole "nature vs. nurture" debate should check out studies of identical twins separated at birth. It's fascinating to learn about how similar these twins are, despite growing up in completely different societies.

Males and females literally have different brains that can be differentiated by neuroscientists. By your logic, trans people just have incorrect levels of hormones but this just isn’t true.

Also, resource acquisition is something females look for in a long term mate even in good times. This is called nuptial gifting in the animal kingdom. In humans, women with higher incomes want men with even higher incomes, not less. Although this plays perfectly into the alpha fs beta bucks dynamic.

Are there limits to the types of behaviors that can be socialized? In other words, could we make women attracted to short, poor, timid men?

Or are there biological constraints that guide and inform the types of socialization that occurs in relation to associated environmental factors?

it's not like you can pick up highly social humans and drop them off in a wolf pack or something to see how they'd act, you know? If you did they would either build fires and tribes, or starve and freeze.

I'm not sure with this hormone thing either. it's like you're trying to say biology plays no part in gender behaviors, except for this crucial part that biology (hormones) plays? sounds weird to me man.

Socialized behavior has also been selected for by natural selection and evolutionary biology.

For example, there’s a reason why lions are amongst the only big cats that live in prides, and there’s a reason why a male lion kills cubs once he takes over a pride.

These “socialized behaviors” have biological and genetic underpinnings, as does human behavior.

I think most of the ones actually frequently discussed here come down to hormones. I think the average woman here seriously does not understand the male hormonal cycle or the fact that it interfering with normal thought processes is essentially the default state of existence.

Almost everything else is socialized but attributed to biology with no science to back it. And we can see that by looking at social mammals and their behavior. Women are not biologically wired to be attracted to providers, they were just forced to rely on men to provide until recently. In the animal kingdom females only choose to mate for resources under duress, when they have mate choice and resource abundance they choose the youngest and most genetically fit option, just like males.

Cross-cultural studies show gender differences in mate preferences that are consistent across cultures.Then there is also this article going over a study done in the us that shows that there is a lack of economically attractive men which the researchers believes is responsible for the decline in marriage.I can bring up more studies, but it's pretty obvious that even when women have the ability to support themselves financially, they still tend to want men who make more then them, or at the very least the same.

This is just one example but i think it applies to pretty much any theory regarding biological behavioral differences.

I disagree, I think there are other differences that are biological.There might be some differences that are socialized, but then another question I think we should ask is are those socialized difference a result of the different perceptions people have of men and women that could be due to biology.

I think most of the shit that is defended by biology is most times learned social behaviour but we all have very important genetic differences that account for a lot of things as well.

Agree. I’ve read a lot on this topic and our biology impacts us more than people are ready to admit. A recent book I read on this topic was T: the story of testosterone by Dr. Carole Hooven. She is a evolutionary biologist at Harvard. The book takes a really in depth look into the effects of testosterone.

I mean, the “biology determines gender expression” and “environment and different hormonal cocktails” should both be right.

When people say that biology determines gender differences, they are almost always referring to our sexual organs. They aren’t thinking about the fact that we are a social species, therefore our social environment is going to influence how our brain and how our personal hormone cocktail develops as we grow.

For some reason, people that argue against gender differences being affected by socialization with “nu uh, it’s all biology” ignore that nurture/our social environment impacts our biology, such as our developing brain as children.
