It can be seen many ways. But, yes one way is creepy. If I’m outside and I catch a man staring at me I’m going to think you’re weird and need to develop some courtesy skills. There’s a certain way you behave in public and staring at people is disrespectful. Staring is very different from glancing or glaring by the way.

It’s how someone is looking. The eyes are an incredible tool of communication and we can register subtle subconscious details in how someone is looking at you. A man gazing at a woman he finds attractive can be done in a respectful way if he is literally surveying her as a human being first and foremost, it’s perceptibly different than when the gaze is objectifying and dehumanizing.

Things like length of the look, how wide or narrow the eyes are, how piercing, whether the man is smiling, how he’s smiling, the pupils, etc.

We literally evolved to use eye contact as an important method of instantaneous communication. The eyes don’t lie. If you’re looking at a woman like a piece of meat versus an attractive human being, it will be obvious. It’s not that complicated.

My husband is bi and used to spend a lot of time on tinder seeking men (this was before Grindr was big, or maybe even existed). He’s said that there was definitely a sense of being preyed upon that elicited a mix of flattery and apprehension, which is consistent with my own response to male interest.

I identified men attracted to me were looking at me like prey before I even reached adulthood. The worst is when they lick their lips.

In the interest of transparency - I’ll admit, I do lick my lips sometimes at the site of an attractive woman and don’t seem to have control over it. But I think it’s less threatening than when a man does it.

Presumably if the woman is into him she'll stare back and they'll have, y'know, actual eye contact. Obviously some dudes take this way too far but a lot of women don't get that women also stare and that making or avoiding eye contact is a big part of implicit body language.

The trouble with pathologising normal make sexual behavior is you have to bend over backwards to pretend women a) are never attracted to men and normal male behavior b) do not exhibit similar behavior and c) do not and have not benefited from such male behaviour. You also have to be so self righteous as to believe that throughout all of human history everyone had it wrong until the early 2000s when some men and most women except those who internalized 'wrong', 'male' thinking were magically finally 'fixed'.

1) Women have been attracted to men throughout history. In every civilization, most women had children with men. White knights who think they're the only good men and everyone else is predatory are delusional, manipulative losers with a savior complex who think women need to be saved from their free will and agency by them and who often turn out to be actual abusive.

2) Women stare at men. You don't pathologise that because of the 'benevolent' result of a sexism that sees women who don't behave the way you have decided they should as having no agency and not being at fault whilst men doing the same thing are responsible for their actions and morally guilty.

3) Women don't like the burden of approaching men. They prefer to be approached. Checking someone out is first step in gauging interest to see if she checks you out back and if you should escalate to saying hi. It allows women a chance to give non verbal feedback about whether they're interested enough for the guy to approach them without having to actually interact with him.

4) the confused mess that is post structuralist fourth wave feminism thinks it is the Fukuyama of gender relations and sociology. It has even more egotistical hubris than he did. A subset of 2000s (mostly) white, rich, university educated (in junk pseudo science), from industrialized nations is a terrible base from which to think you're building an understanding of generalized innate human behaviour.

Go read the WIERD people paper by Joseph Henrich, look up Dr John Ionnidis on reproductlibility of studies in the social sciences, practice some basic logic and epistemology and go out, see the world and how people actually interact outside your neurotic bubble and stop seeing women is victims who need you to rescue them from being looked by men, some of whom they want.

It only creeps women out if they aren’t attracted to the guy. I’ve stared at women before who were into me and they didn’t have a problem with it.

Also, it depends how a woman is stared at. If a guy whom she likes is looking deeply into her eyes then she is going to appear exists that much more than a guy whom she likes looking her body up and down like a piece of meat. She’s going to have to really be into the guy for him to get away with that kind of staring.

I’ve caught a woman’s gaze from across the room and not taken my eyes off her as I walk across said room.

What’s creepy, to women, is talking about them in this whey (as prey). I realize this makes sense however it’s a great example of how men who hyper analyze and over logic romance come across as weird. It’s not attractive. To some degree women do like men who “just get it” because it’s the opposite of this robotic behavior that’s not sexy.

This is what happens when someone researches how to be seductive with now real word experience.

I don't think it's that at all.

It is expected for men or women to pursue/entice people they are attracted to. That's what I assume he means by "hunting.".

The reason is just that people just don't want to be pursued or enticed by those they have no interest. A woman can feel safe around a man and vice versa but if they aren't interested then it'll feel uncomfortable when the opposite sex shows interest.

Staring is just usually interpreted a multitude of ways and those ways bring forth the same results. Aka a feeling of desire or interest from someone one isn't interested in.
