I’m a dad in my mid-40s and I’ve hit a point I never thought I would. I’ve been married a long time. Three kids. I’ve always been the provider, always the one doing the emotional heavy lifting, always the one trying to keep the family stable.

Over the last year, my wife has become cold, distant, avoidant, and honestly… hostile. She barely speaks to me. She won’t stay in the same room with me. She reacts like I’m the enemy no matter how calm I try to be. She accuses me of things that didn’t happen, spins my words, flips the blame on me, then shuts down any attempt I make to talk.

I’m doing therapy, self-work, everything I can to stay grounded. I’m not perfect, but I’m trying. She refuses couples counseling. Rejects affection. Avoids eye contact. There’s no warmth at all.

Every single day feels like living with someone who’s already left the marriage emotionally, but just hasn’t said it out loud.

And here’s the brutally honest part:

If divorce didn’t come with so much pain — financial, emotional, the impact on our kids — I’d already be gone. That’s the truth I keep trying to avoid.

There’s a part of me that wants freedom, peace, and stability more than anything. And another part of me that would be absolutely devastated to end the marriage and break up the family.

I’m carrying the entire weight of this relationship on my back, and it’s breaking me down physically and emotionally. I feel trapped between staying in a situation that’s destroying me, and leaving a situation that will also destroy me in a different way.

She shows tiny moments of “repair,” but they last 10 seconds and then it’s right back to coldness, distance, accusations, and shutting down. It’s not real effort. It’s not partnership. It’s not sustainable.

I’m not trying to villainize her — she’s clearly going through her own stuff. But I can’t survive in this dynamic unless something permanently changes, and nothing is changing.

I’m tired of feeling like the villain, tired of being blamed for everything, tired of the emotional starvation, tired of walking on eggshells in my own home.

I just need to hear from men who’ve been in this place:

My wife is gorgeous, and an extreme avoidant , she will move on much quicker than me . I’m loyal to a fault and not a quitter . My family has told me to just detach emotionally, but my brain is trying to end the pain . My kids will suffer , so will I, and financially it will probably make me close to homeless .
