We've had PPDers collaborate on dating app experiments before. If you really want to prove something there's nothing stopping you from doing one. You can show us definitive proof by running your own experiment. If you wanna make a fake profile and pay to boost it, I'll reimburse you on paypal. Or, you can baselessly claim everyone else is doing it wrong.

What's the point of this post? It seems like you're saying dating apps aren't that bad, but then you say "Because usually in these dating experiments, it seems the only thing people are relying on is a guy’s pictures to be good. And the guys complaining have really underestimated how good-looking a guy has to be for that to actually work." Which implies dating apps are that bad, because pictures do 90% of the lifting on dating apps. Are you implying that you can have easy success with a good bio?

Regarding picture quality, whether that's about pgoto quality or subject quality or both, aren't apps set up so you don't see the profile until after you've seen the picture? If that's true then the picture is doing way more heavy lifting than the profile. Your claim applies to photogenic men who lose a woman's initial interest with a lazy or crappy profile. It does nothing for a lot of men who are not bad looking so much as they're not especially good looking. Those men can write a thoughtful, witty profile that never gets seen.

And maybe that's just the nature of dating apps and a good reason for men who don't have jaws or self esteem forged in iron to avoid them. but you seem to think they have value for regular human men.

Nah, most people who get on dating apps already understand that they may need to pay for certain features if they want the best chance of having a decent experience. Boosts, premium filters, and better visibility are not some hidden secret, so acting like men are unknowingly sabotaging themselves by refusing to pay does not really answer the complaint.

Paying can improve exposure, but it does not create attraction. If a man pays to have his profile shown to more women and still gets little interest, that actually reinforces the point that the experience is difficult for him. More visibility only gives more women the chance to reject the same profile.

Verifying goes without saying. It won’t help too much but why would you not do it? It helps and any amount of help is better than not helping.

As for boosting however, as someone who has been doing this shit for 8 years now, boosting is only effective if you’re new to an area. If you’re in your hometown and you’ve been on dating apps for more than a few months, you should have swiped through everyone in your area and so all boosting is going to do is just expand your radius to give you a few potential matches, most of which you won’t be interested in. If you are new to an area, putting yourself to the front of the line for a bunch of people will drastically increase the amount of matches you get because women only have a certain bandwidth for swiping.

I get plenty of matches, so I'm not one of the guys complaining but in my experience I don't think these paid features really help you all that much. Yes, they want to encourage you to pay, but they also want to discourage you from leaving, so the incentives of these businesses are to drip feed you just enough attention from women to string you along.

I would say the actual best thing you can do is to make sure your profile is set up to attract the specific type of woman you're interested in, rather than women in general. My profile mentions Transformers, Star Trek, and my rock collection, and the type of woman who considers those kinds of interests a bad thing isn't the type of woman I want to date anyway.

As an almost 29-years-old woman hoping to find something serious that could potentially lead to a loving family, I tend to avoid Tinder as the likelihood of just finding a guy who wants a hook-up or a potential agressor is way too big. Yeah, Tinder is almost entirely based on looks and that disadvantages average men because in order to be turned on, the average woman must also like the personality of the guy, hot pictures ALONE just look cheap to most women. Both men and women are visual and looking for sexual pleasure, however men are likely to strongly desire a sexy average girl without knowing anything about her personality or perhaps while not liking it very much whereas women won't probably feel drawn to an average guy who posts picture of his in underwear without knowing anything about him. Such pictures only look appealing to most of us if we come to see he has a great intellect, a fantastic humour, a good heart and so on and so forth.

(To be sure, I'm only consider average trends as there is some overlap between the genders and this is mostly true for cis straight men and cis straight women).

The verified profile thing doesn't seem to work in getting more matches, and it's unreliable as a security measure anyway. I've gotten scammers and fake profiles who had "verified" profiles.

All "verified" really means in practice is that someone was able to pose for a second photo.

Verifying and boosting can only work if the profile is be actually interesting enough that it stands out from the many other male profiles a woman gets to see. I have been on dating apps as a woman, and so many guys have profiles where it looks like they generated them in 5 minutes while sitting on a toilet. Basically a collection of 5 poorly-lit mirror selfies, only a fraction of the bio filled, no interesting information or potential conversation starters in the profile text. I think guys actually overestimate the role that good looks play in comparison to how those looks are presented. Sure, a very good-looking guy can get away with a lower-effortt profile, but that doesn't mean that an average-looking or even below-average guy cannot improve his profile by adding more flattering pictures, pictures that say something other than "this is what my face looks like" (e.g. hobbies, pets, other activities), more interesting text, filling in the bio etc.

My first question would be what are the metrics shown on the free and boosted accounts? Do they actually show how many people were exposed to the profile (impressions)? How many of those viewed it? If not, then how can you tell if boosting is really doing anything in their own system?

Edit: in other words, what exactly is the boost buying?

Profile made by a close woman friend, semi-professional photos I spent 100$ on, 50$ a month sub, and that’s before I even get the CHANCE to take a girl out to dinner. Fuck that.

Anecdotally, I did fine on apps without ever being verified, and though I eventually paid (because the Likes that I can't see bother me) I didn't notice any increase in anything.

There are two main factors involved in App Success, I think; a good profile (with clear pictures), and good banter after matching. Basically, being able to do well on the apps is a skill, and not everybody has it. I mention this only because there is undeniably a difference in how men and women experience online dating. Men do have to put more effort into it, I think, because there are more incentives for a woman to play it safe (those mostly being that their match rates are higher, and actual safety).

The app data says men swipe right on 40-60% of the profiles they see (which is crazy), while women go for way less. Men outnumber women on every app by a significant margin, but have worse results.

All this is to say, when it comes to the facts of matches and meetings from online dating, we can trust what men say. What we can't necessarily trust is their analysis, because IMO the median male app user is fucking up bad. Paying to boost a profile nobody likes isn't going to help, and neither is verifying that you are definitely the guy in the profile nobody likes. The problem isn't visibility, it's what they're choosing to show.
