Yet another example of the foolishness of the obsession of online dating data.

What this means is that a lot of women of varying age groups can look at a picture of an older man and think to themselves "he's handsome!". That's it. As anyone who's ever been on a date could tell you, a pretty picture does not a romantic connection make. Especially for women.

A 50 year old man has nothing to offer an 18 year old woman other than being a target for gold digging. Most 18 year old women want boyfriends, not daddies. They want to fuck like bunnies, go to parties and concerts, be silly, hang out with their friends, study and plan for the future. They're not looking for a nice house and a boring life in the suburbs while caring for a rapidly aging partner.

It looks like they're going by received messages. Young women aren't going to be sending messages to men because they don't need to. Older women do, hence the 50 year old men appearing to be more desirable.

Okay, there are faulty assumptions people are taking from this study.

From the data, we know that 80% of messages are sent by men, but they examined people who had at least one message and reply back.

Women who are more likely to reply back are more likely to reply back to 50 year old men. Why do you think that is? Because in the dataset (and in general), women who are older/on the site to sincerely connect with someone in this age group probably receive fewer messages than the average 18 year old. There may also be fewer single men at 50 who appeal to women within an age range who would realistically date a 50-year-old man, so those men receive more responses from this pool of users, not all users.

18 year old women, on the other hand, appeal to a wider age range of men (from 18 to...mid-30's, perhaps older?) and receive more messages as a result.

This study is not saying that these two groups of users -- 18 year old women and 50 year old men -- are desirable to each other. They're really not, generally speaking.

Let’s say one of those couples had a successful, long lasting relationship and eventually they decide to get married. We now have a twenty something girl married to a fifty something man. After twenty years the guy will be 70, while she’s 40. He’ll retire when she’s still in the midst of her career, he’ll get sick and old and she will have to take care of him. 50 year old men just get a disproportionate amount of attention online compared to other men because there is a large number of women using online dating (perhaps women who are aged 35 to 55, typically) who might be interested in them. This does not mean that the typical 18-year old woman would be interested in them.

That's called Sugar Daddies. It's more common than people talk about. My wife has several younger friends who do these arrangements sometimes.

It definitely happens for exchanges of sex and shopping trips but outside of that, the two people have no use for each other. I live in a major city and I often see at least one couple like this any time I go out.

Fantasy isn't the same as reality, men really don't want to date children. There are alot of cons on internet dating, 50 year old divorce lonely men are their target.

I'm 50. I know older men who would go to a barely legal prostitute, not one who would or did marry a 18 year old, and I lived in Nicaragua where expats buying women is common.

I know when you are young it's hard to imagine that as an older adult you wouldn't put up with constant yammering about boy bands just to get in Jenny's pants on the regular, but not many 50 year old men want to do that. They want someone they can enjoy life with at their pace.

Because by the age of 50 lots of men have died off, are in jail, are broke as shit paying alimony and who knows, probably still child-support. 18 year old women aren’t desiring 50 year old men. 50 year old men are roughly the most desired age by the majority of women who are using the site, who are probably older themselves. 18 year old girls don’t need an app to hook up, they can do that in person, if they’re on the app it’s likely more for validation than actual hooking up. The sort of woman who is actually looking for these 50 year old men on the internet is probably 30+, possibly divorced, possibly eager to settle down with someone who has life experience and stability. 50 also isn’t a dramatic peak, it’s pretty similar to the rest of the 30-60 range for men.

These are two unrelated metrics. All or most men regardless of age want to bang 18 year olds (apparently) so all or most include it in their search criteria range. They decide fuck it, show me the 18 year olds even if they’re decades older themselves. The women who use the app, likely being older women, are more realistic about age compatibility and don’t value the novelty of youthful attractiveness over everything else like (some) men do.

The link doesn't work right now but if it's the study I think it is then they are talking about attractiveness in terms of "options available" not "if you asked every single person of the opposite sex in the world to give that person a rating on a scale from 1-10, what would be the average score".

A 50 years old man is more attractive than a 20 years old man because in his age group he has much more options. Doesn't mean he's banging teens.

Oh God, even a seven year age difference when I was 19 was like threading a needle. I can't imagine 18 and 50 as more than the obvious sugar daddy scenario. It's the older women sending men messages as they do not get many, making them the popular group by default, last chance saloon women are the only ones pushing, hence the majority of men in that age group getting the messages. 18yo s are not messaging 50yo men outside sugar type relationships.

Neither of your theories "holds any water", because the study isn't based on "who's v rated most desirable by others", but on "who received most messages". You're reading the outcome wrong. All this proves is that women who target the 50 year old group are much more inclined to send messages than younger women, who likely target younger age groups.

The 18 year old women being most desirable is whatever, I guess. Thing is: you know who don't or barely send messages to men because they receive tons on a regular basis? That's right 18 year old women. Therefore the men they choose (but don't need to message because men are very likely to message them first) are excluded from the statistics.

You know who are sending messages because they can't just sit back and wait for the messages to roll in? The 35+ year old women crowd. Since they're older and women generally want to date older/more established men those women target the 50 or so year old men.

That does not mean that 50 year old men are desirable to 18 year old women. They're not. Many 18 year olds think 35 is gross and old, so 50 year old men are going to be about as attractive to them as their grandpa.

If every age/gender/whatever on dating apps would be sending messages to peyote they're attracted to then 18-20 year old women would be most desirable women, and men in their mid to late 20s would be most desirable men, because those are the groups with most single people looking for partners. And guess what? Those are generally the age groups that pair off with each other.

You have totally missed the point, but have all facts.

Tldr: you are confusing limited supply with great demand.

This is not a demand issue. It's a supply issue. Men's sex drive at their height is late teens, early 20s. That is peak of males looking for females. There are only so many 18 year old femles. Hence. Large demand, limited supply.

Conversely, post divorce most men stop dating, while women keep dating. This means 30 something to 40 something women are looking for partners. Again, large demand, limited supply.

There is nothing inherently better about an 18 year old woman over a 22 year old, but there is a lot more couples and dating set up at 22. Hence why the demand drops. It's not like an 18 year old brings anything substantially better to the table in those few years, and in fact it's been shown a women really peaks at around 28. However, men often have their dating games on point by that age.
