I like yours.

Alternatively, I'd say masculinity is the act of performing the male gender, a concept that historically could only be expressed in a very limited way but that in recent years has really opened up. That's good but it also means it's very easy to start questioning whether you're "really a man". Constantly asking yourself if you can be a man if you don't fit those traditional qualities associated with being a man.

So in light of all that my one sentence answer about the definition of masculinity is... who cares, baby?

My definition: a quality that can't also be taken in a feminine or gender neutral context. So I guess just bulky muscles and deep voices.

The problem with that definition is it applies just as much to women (just replace masculinity/male/his with femininity/female/her) really.

Most people can be confident etc (yes, women too) not everyone can have a large masculine frame,high degree of facial masculinity etc.

And obviously, not every men can or will be masculine so it's usually a pretty good measure of masculinity.

I think we have to look outside our selves and imagine describing masculinity to an alien. But that's still hard, for obvious reasons.

Will give it my best shot:

Masculinity is both a social construct and male hormone affected behaviour/bodily features, and is especially the result of men wanting to differentiate themselves from women (for the purpose of having a distinct core value, due to women's core value of being the baby incubators/breast feeders).

Alternatively

Masculinity is an expression of humankind that is unaffected by the evolutionary restraints of pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and care of small children.

Masculinity: Male confidence in oneself and his own abilities to create his own life.

This wouldn't pass the 'alien' test, due to the fuzziness of 'male confidence' and the fact that it also describes women.

Masculinity is...doing what needs to be done, whatever the cost.

Whether it's picking up some extra shifts at work so your child can participate in an extracurricular activity, letting your wife drive the good car while you take the beater that could break down at any moment, or dying to protect your family, you do it. To do less would be to not be a man.

Once, that defined adulthood. Women did what needed doing, including things that would make a soft modern American man like me puke his guts out. Now that women have become spoiled children, it defines masculinity. There's a reason why "Be a man" has a meaning that "Woman up" never will.
