Hollywood is meant to be about wish fulfillment. So why do some people, mostly men, get angry when they realize that real life is not like that?

Probably because they didn't have someone who, when they were growing up, didn't teach them what life is really like.

[–]MrB0gus9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly. Most people don't realize how much the media influences.

We spend hours/day watching TV/on the internet. The content we consume tremendously influences how we see the world. It's why corporations spend billions on advertising that brainwashes us into using their products.

Movies don't come with a disclaimer "this is wish fulfillment, it is not reality, don't base your views on relationships on this movie."

We watch hundreds of movies over the year and our brain subconsciously learns that this is how people act, and this is how life works.

Or that parents today raise their kids in protective bubbles. And when their kids go to college and get their first slight exposure to the real world some of them break, see the SJW's at college campuses for example.

I don't think you can say "mostly men" when women were the ones insisting movies, magazine models and video game characters change so they feel less insecure about their looks.

Haven't seen the male equivalent of bbw porn nor has anyone changed men's roles in films or video games. Making the claim "mostly men" ignores a huge bone of contention for feminists and women in general. Among those are issues like they don't want to be reminded of their insecurities nor do they want men to give other women attention. It would require women to raise their personal standards and take responsibility for themselves instead of blaming their unhappiness on outside forces.

[–]DrunkGirl69Manic Pixie Drunk Girl10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You think BBW porn is a result of women's demands?

Also, have you seen the way men talk about the media here?

[–]monkeysinmypocket0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You think BTW porn is the result of women's demands?

I know right? They have no fuckin clue!

[–]KrispyMcSockingtonPillar of the community0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You think BBW porn is a result of women's demands?

Of course not. But if we are to assume the media's representation of reality is pretty poor, then some BBM porn would fit the bill. I don't even think men browse for BBW porn so much as it is just there. Rule 34 of the internet, I think. The other issue is that porn has traditionally been seen a negative reaction from women and feminists. My comparison was to show how women have been catered for in the media (a fat woman on the magazine cover is "brave"? whereas there is no BBM porn or fat men on covers of magazines) whereas not much has changed for men.

Also, have you seen the way men talk about the media here?

You must not have been around when women felt a slender woman on a magazine cover or in media in general caused them such emotional harm they insisted the media change to suit them. Guys complaining about Disney is one thing, but nothing changed for them.

[–]midnightvulpine[🍰] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The video game aspect is less about insecurities and more about wanting to feel represented by the character you play once in a while. Some people care about that.

[–]KrispyMcSockingtonPillar of the community2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Which is fine. And yet they had things change. I agree that limiting women's roles is problematic but if OP is going to say men are being ridiculous for their complaints about media representation, at least women had their concerns taken seriously. When men do it, they are ridiculed for it. That is not a fair way to view equality.

[–]midnightvulpine[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men aren't yet a minority in media representation. Though some act like they are. Or scream bloody murder whenever there is a move towards equality. That's likely why some don't take it seriously. Because a lot of public talking heads who speak against diversity are, to be frank, ridiculous.

[–]KrivenRaven0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Some people care about that.

Way too much. I play video games specifically to be something/somebody that isn't me.

[–]midnightvulpine[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ditto, but it seems to make some people uncomfortable to be something they aren't in a game. Or something like that.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

You completely missed the point and are arguing against a strawman.

They aren't fighting against no thin women. They are against skinny petite women solely.

Plus men always had plenty of roles in video games and movies while women were reduced to sexy side piece number one and sexy side piece number two.

Men have doctors, heroes and everything else as role models. Women simply want to have varied role models as well.

[–]MrB0gus7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yea the media definitely misrepresents women, over-using "ideal sexy" women and sets unrealistic impossible standards for women should look. It's very damaging to young girls growing up watching it.

I think what Red Pill is saying is that the media also sets unrealistic and impossible standards for men that damages guys growing up.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

While at the same time they claim that they thought that looks don't matter for guys

So do these impossible standards for men exist or are they just cherry picking reasons to be outraged?

[–]MrB0gus5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

In the media for guys it's kind of the opposite message, for girls it's "you have to look beautiful and thin" for guys it's "you can be an awkward fat dork and still get the beautiful girl".

That message is damaging because it causes awkward fat dork guys to expect to get a hot girl and be upset when they don't, and they usually blame girls.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So how are no standards comparable to high standards?

[–]MrB0gus2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They aren't really. What I'm saying is both are bad effects that the media has on people.

If you think that "Nice Guys" who feel entitled to hot women and get angry and pissy when they don't get them is a bad thing, then the media promoting the idea that dorky nice guys get hot girls is a bad thing.

[–]trpobservereats ass3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Plus men always had plenty of roles in video games and movies while women were reduced to sexy side piece number one and sexy side piece number two.

Men are the primary consumers of those types of games. It is stupid not to cater to your primary demographic. I'm seeing that a ton of the complaints about this stuff come from women who don't even play the games, they just want to come in, complain until somebody gives in, and then leave.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Men are the primary consumers of those types of games

Because it used to be a man's club. Nowadays there's plenty of female gamers

It is stupid not to cater to your primary demographic

Horizon Zero Dawn is like the result of that. Is it really a problem for you that it exists? Why do you care that they now also make games that aren't sexist?

I'm seeing that a ton of the complaints about this stuff come from women who don't even play the games, they just want to come in, complain until somebody gives in, and then leave.

Oh no they are doing something that helps someone except themselves

You know that people can stand up for issues even though they don't directly help themselves, right?

Why is this so often seen as an argument? Like complaining about female black life protesters that don't sleep with black men, straight people that care about gay marriage or women that care about male issues

[–]trpobservereats ass3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Because it used to be a man's club. Nowadays there's plenty of female gamers

Yeah it was a mans club because it was associated with being a loser, not because men were yelling "go home gamer girl" every time a girl asked to play Super Mario.

For a lot of the games that are complained about, men are the primary demographic. More girls are playing games, a lot more, but the problem here is that the games feminists are complaining about are not those games. A huge amount of the increase in female gaming is in the mobile gaming industry. Most girls at this point have played Candy Crush at least once.

But game series like Hitman and and Call of Duty and Battlefield, while having plenty of girl gamers, are overwhelmingly male. I don't think many girls are playing Dead or Alive games. And the feminists obsessed with complaining about these games are not playing them at all. And when SJW's make games they make these amazingly racist, boring, garbage games.

Horizon Zero Dawn is like the result of that.

Choices made within that game are definitely the result of that, but it doesn't really look like a game obsessed with being preachy, why would I have a problem with it? Its still a game centered around being a game and not SJW porn. I don't care one way or the other, we'll see how it does and how people like it. I don't have a "problem" with any game, I just don't buy games like the one I linked up there. However, there are people who do have a "problem" with popular game series and want those games to change, even though they don't even play those kinds of games (I don't play games like Horizon Zero Dawn either), and I think what they are doing is just making the world a slightly worse place. Gamers cannot just game in peace. Everything must now be scrutinized.

You know that people can stand up for issues even though they don't directly help themselves, right?

It isn't helping anyone. All you end up doing is making the games worse for the people who actually play them. You might be helping like, 100 people at the expense of thousands or millions. Not to mention a lot of the things they want to "fix" aren't problems in the first place. Sometimes it comes across that some of these feminists are disgusted with the basic idea that men find women sexy at all.

Its like if I got on TV and started talking about how the modeling industry needs way more straight men designing clothes for the straight male audience. Nobody is being helped by that, because that audience just isn't very large.

straight people that care about gay marriage

Just to take this example, it is not analogous at all because I'm pretty sure laws about gay marriage directly effect most gay people. Gay people are the primary users of gay marriage law, so you are actually helping make things better for the people who actually use the subject matter. The primary users are the primary beneficiaries. It is not so when you force identity politics and feminism into games that SJW's don't play.

[–]KrispyMcSockingtonPillar of the community0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sometimes it comes across that some of these feminists are disgusted with the basic idea that men find women sexy at all.

Definitely part of the problem. Women feel insecure about it so men should stop enjoying it. Bill Burr has a theory that women are jealous of how easy men are to please. It doesn't take much to make men happy. Video games and sport (sexism and toxic masculinity) take the focus away from women and they cannot stand it. Add it to the fact that women are far less happy today than they have been before and you have women who cannot allow their partners to be happy while they are miserable.

Women like that need to figure their own shit out first.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think OP is referring to the ones who feel like the media brain washed them into BP beliefs -- that's mostly men here.

[–]KrispyMcSockingtonPillar of the community0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes but if women's complaints about the impact of the media is taken seriously, why do we not extend the same thing to men?

Why is it that women are affected negatively by the media and when men say they also feel how they are represented is unrealistic, they are ridiculed for not "getting it".

I get that the media is harmful, but men are not immune to the effects. It would be like telling women that they should ignore those skinny, photoshopped women on magazine covers because it's not real. If we cannot do that without somehow being sexist, ignoring the concerns of men who feel affected by it keeps telling them that their issues just don't matter.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Who here is having all these complaints about the media?

What makes me angry isn't that this is fiction, what makes me angry is that they show fictions to children but advertise it as if it is reality.

Kids are going to try to connect reality and fiction, take example on what they see. Disney has been doing great teaching young girls that they're high value and deserve life risking handsome wealthy princes.

The fiction in movies shouldn't be about human interactions.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (43 children) | Copy Link

Disney has been doing great teaching young girls that they're high value and deserve life risking handsome wealthy princes.

It hasn't, though. I grew up obsessed with Disney and never came away thinking I deserved a prince. In fact I never developed any conclusions about who id marry. and nobody had to tell me "just so you know, little spaceboobs, beauty and the beast isn't real."

The fact that some guys are less attractive than others isn't a nefarious Disney plot, it's just reality.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, if I had a dollar for every time Thing 2 has watched Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty, my mortgage would be considerably diminished. But she is under no impression that she is a princess, or that she will marry a prince.

I'm very aware of it... we feminists call it "the princess industrial complex." it's a multifaceted marketing phenomenon, not a movie.

[–]MrB0gus3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ha that's actually a pretty good name.

So do you agree with me?

Or you think that it's a multifaceted marketing phenomenon but it doesn't impact you or any other girls?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

oh I think it affects girls tremendously, but I think it's a separate entity from Disney movies which were the subject being discussed. Disney movies-- at least Disney renaissance on up-- actually have pretty good messages. the marketing leviathan that follows? not so much. but it still boils down to parenting... what messages are a child's parents sending? the Disney princess machine can either reinforce them ("you're a princess, Madison, just like Belle!") or be entertainment ("isn't Belle's yellow dress pretty?")

my parents staunchly refused to buy me or my siblings any branded merchandise whatsoever... I hated it at the time, but now I realize it was solid parenting on their parts. still watched all the movies and was Disney obsessed, but the movies (which, like I said, had good messages) were pretty much the extent of my exposure to that whole juggernaut. we also didn't have much money, and that'll keep a kid grounded.

but back to the princess thing: a big issue facing young girls that, again, feminists harp on, is the lack of non-princess role models. boys toys are limited in many ways too, but there's a broader variety of aspirational roles presented. superhero, race car driver, astronaut, doctor, martial arts master... with girls, at least until very recently, it was princess or barbie and that's about it. that's an ugly message to be sending, that all she needs to do-- all she really can do--is be pretty. this, again, isn't a Disney movie thing because if anything Disney movies say the exact opposite: goodness and strength of character wins the day. it's the culture that little girls are steeped in and their parents willingness to give into it.

[–]Eastuss༼ つ ▀̿_▀̿ ༽つ1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

aw cute lil space boob.

In USA women often use the sentence "where are the boys?/men?" grossly meaning "where are the true valuable men that are going to seduce me?". In my country it's "where is my charming prince?".

It faded away as time went, but my generation's girls definitively bathed in those beliefs :') Not saying that they ultimately thought about it this way, but they were influenced.

The fact that some guys are less attractive than others isn't a nefarious Disney plot, it's just reality.

Disney did good job at setting this right IMO. :p Like, Snow white and the seven orbiters.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago* (16 children) | Copy Link

right, but that's not literal. that's more literally translated as "I've had a bunch of shitty dates recently, what the hell?" no one is literally expecting a Disney prince, just a guy who isn't immature. that's less common than it should be in my generation.

men have similar complaints, since they're faced with a dating pool full of overweight women and single moms past a certain age. high value people pair off young, and low value people are left to date each other and wonder "what the hell happened to men/women?"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I'm not talking about who's having sex, I'm talking about who's pairing up. who finds themselves single in their mid-late twenties with shitty prospects. and getting into Harvard does not a mature person make... in fact, my interactions with the heavily educated set have led me to believe they're among the most stunted, maladjusted, and immature people around. your articles reinforce that, especially considering the fact that highly educated women don't seem to be faring much better. some of the most brilliant comp sci guys I've known (this is my field so I encounter them the most) could barely keep up their apartments or do a load of laundry. education and intelligence have fuck all to do with maturity or real world awareness, and that's a vitally important part of being in a relationship. you could be a genius in your field with great earning potential, but until you develop social skills and get your every day life shit together you're a low-value relationship prospect.

I don't blame them, though. baby boomers failed hardcore as parents, mang. the standards for academic success have gotten so high that it's almost impossible to have a quasi-normal social life and get into Harvard. they've raised a generation of shut-ins with 4.0 GPA's and mile-long resumes and those kids, understandably, don't want to date or fuck each other.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not talking about who's having sex, I'm talking about who's pairing up.

It's awfully hard to find stats on who's single vs paired up, mostly due to plates/fwbs and other strange setups that give interesting results when you ask people "are you single?"

your articles reinforce that, especially considering the fact that highly educated women don't seem to be faring much better.

I'd bet a large sum that almost all of that stat is from the male student population, and they only went into depth with women because that's actually surprising

you could be a genius in your field with great earning potential, but until you develop social skills and get your every day life shit together you're a low-value relationship prospect.

You're basically framing maturity as spending 60 bucks on a bar tab to drink poison for the night until you get all the nuances down. You have this laughable completely gynocentric view of maturity which as you use it is interchangeable with being attractive

the standards for academic success have gotten so high that it's almost impossible to have a quasi-normal social life and get into Harvard. they've raised a generation of shut-ins with 4.0 GPA's and mile-long resumes

Some kid in my engineering school scribbled on the stall of the bathroom next to the senior design lab "misery today money tomorrow". That one kinda stuck with me. In a world where everyone is screaming about unparalleled student loan debt, unbelievable housing, insurance prices, these maladjusted no real world awareness morons are buying condos and houses in high priced areas before 25. Somehow people like me knew that English majors were going to be broke burger flippers at 12.

and those kids, understandably, don't want to date or fuck each other.

It depends on the school and the major obviously, but for me it was about 13:1 men to women. 90% of those women were Asians. The peer group straight up not existing is common. And those outside, they want nothing to do with those men.

Not really, I've never known someone with a FWB who would claim to be "in a relationship" unless they were being led on. but you're right, there are no official stats. I'm talking specifically, my friends who are still single are low value prospects. great people, but they have major roadblocks when it comes to dating.

I'd bet a large sum that almost all of that stat is from the male student population, and they only went into depth with women because that's actually surprising

I'd bet you're pulling that out of your ass and have no actual idea.

You're basically framing maturity as spending 60 bucks on a bar tab to drink poison for the night until you get all the nuances down.

...wait, what? I said nothing of the sort.

You have this laughable completely gynocentric view of maturity which as you use it is interchangeable with being attractive

alphabet soup. I said nothing about physical attractiveness. but I obviously struck a nerve.

I'm not talking just about engineers, I'm talking about high-performing kids more broadly. you've turned this into STEM-wank. and no one I know was "buying condos in expensive areas before 25." not one person, because they weren't ready to settle down and commit to an area. and those who have since bought property did so with help from their parents.

It depends on the school and the major obviously, but for me it was about 13:1 men to women. 90% of those women were Asians. The peer group straight up not existing is common. And those outside, they want nothing to do with those men.

again with the STEM-wank. Harvard is pretty evenly split and when I was in college us STEMnerds were given every opportunity to socialize with kids from other colleges and majors. in fact, the dorms were designed to facilitate this.

Huh. So relational capital - the shit that makes you attractive - is more a social measure of "having your shit together" more than being in good shape, good-looking, and having your shit together? Interesting. It could also be that the rise of income inequality leads to greater inequalities in social inequality: Chad Chaddington IV has his father's dealership to fall back on; he doesn't have to bust his ass very hard, and he'll have a solid middle-class lifestyle. Joe McNerdy, however, studies his ass off, runs cross country, gets into Harvard, studies computer science, and is a 25 year old virgin. He makes money, and if he's lucky he can pass it on to his nephews and nieces.

You've never heard the adage "Life imitates art, art imitates life"?

Many films and shows are set out as representing how actual people live actual lives. And, representing how men and women meet each other, interact with each other, get to know each other, date, fuck, marry, break up, divorce, have kids, raise kids, work, play, and die.

It's not unreasonable for young impressionable kids to look to film depictions of people living lives (IN A REALISTIC WAY, not porn or shit like that) and conclude that's how it is or should be done. Particularly when they are young, and don't have the frame of references or experience to discern between truth and fiction, between what is realistic and what is not.

Remember the film "Ordinary People"? The ENTIRE POINT of the film is setting out how a normal UMC family deals with the loss of a child. And it's depicted in a very realistic, very human way. Same with a film like "Blue Valentine", the birth, life and death of a working class prole marriage.

[–]Eastuss༼ つ ▀̿_▀̿ ༽つ0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

OF COURSE IT DOESNT THAT IS MY POINT

[–]reepbotEven when I lose I always win.[S] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My point is that the reality that they present is real in like the people you see on the screen are humans that walk and talk in places and locations that you know or have been to in the world that you live in.

However the reality in how they talk to each other and interact with one another is slightly different to your experience.

For example with a sitcom you would see that they are interacting in a city that you or I have heard about or seen. But the way they talk to each other is different with their perfectly timed comebacks or hilarious situations that they get themselves into every week. Real life is not like that, it is much more mundane and thus much better.

[–]Eastuss༼ つ ▀̿_▀̿ ༽つ0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Most men of TRP age used to get exactly the message that films and television shows depicting love, sex and romance are how you do it. If you want a girlfriend, the Disney romcom is how you do it. You act like the male friend. The 1989 movie "Say Anything...." was held up to men of my vintage as the absolute gold standard for how you attract and get and keep a girlfriend who will love you forever. (Google it, I don't have the time to explain the plot.)

We believed it because people we trusted told us we should.

[–]reepbotEven when I lose I always win.[S] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nah. I was told and shown over and over and over that your "value" was being nice, kind, affable, friendly, and willing to give give give until it hurts, and that these things are Sexually attractive. That women are sexually attracted to nice, kind, giving, caring men, and that looks don't matter, and that girls dont' really like hot assholes, they really like nice guys (like me). Because I was told and shown those things. By the girls themselves.

[–]reepbotEven when I lose I always win.[S] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hollywood is about consumerism. And because they want to sell you something they will of course insist that they are selling you the real thing. (I think this goes deeper, like theres some basis in Heideggers "the world as picture," "we see the world as whatever is comes into being through representedness") Why do some men get angry when they continue to not realize that and try to buy commodified masculinity in the form of many redpill schemes?

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think most men get angry at Hollywood for delivering wish fulfillment. I think the anger you see online is a narcissism induced anger born from feeling like you've got the right to be seen a certain way without feeling an obligation or even desire to do what is necessary to actually project that image. To give a personal example, I purposely do "not care" about my appearance and put relatively little effort into it. But I still feel frustrated when I am not found attractive and a tinge of envy when I see female desire for men, at least in the abstract. I feel that envy when I read a comment for example but not when I actually see a couple or people flirting in real life. It's kinda dissociated from real human beings. I recognize that type of anger a lot among incels and redpillers. It's when someone's self-image doesn't line up with how they're seen. That self-image might be informed by what a person sees on TV and in movies. I think that kind of thinking is over-represented on the internet. Whether it is also over-represented among men in general because it is more culturally accepted for men to think like that is another discussion. I'm not really sure and would have to look into it some more.

[–]damaskroseBlue Pill Woman6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think a lot of people are afraid of trying, because they're afraid of failing. It's easier to pretend you don't care - but the anger comes from suppressing your true feelings.

I felt this way when I was a teen, angry with my peers for treating me like I'm invisible - but really I was angry at myself for being so damn shy, and too scared to try anything different.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

women just want some romance and happiness in their lives

The original point we are replying to is that women's standards for "some" may be higher than they realize and are unrealistic, real life doesn't measure up.

Sometimes you're right, girls try things out and just don't like them. Otoh, often but not always, those things were tried because the guy at that time was worth the discomfort because he was hotter and the new guy isn't.

I absolutely accept this part as true.

he was hotter and the new guy isn't

But not this bit. The two guys could be equally as hot, their hotness is irrelevant. One just happened to meet the girl in the midst of her sexual exploration period, while she was discovering the things she enjoys, and the things she never wants to do again. Keep in mind, before trying something you can have a hopeful expectation of what it's like. Once you have tried it, you know to expect a lot of discomfort for very little reward.

About Time is good because it's actually funny, also has some dark real shit and doesn't have an entirely happy ending, and is as much about the protagonist's relationship with his father as the lovey dovey stuff.

You're right that Hollywood is wish fulfillment, but it isn't often stated as such very explicitly, nor is it usually specified what parts of movies and TV are fantasy and what parts are realistic. When a show as ridiculous as "The Bachelor(ette)" qualifies as "reality TV," you can't fault young men or women for experiencing confusion over how "real" TV and movies should be seen as.

So, most people experience a moment where they "get it" and realize life isn't like the movies. For most people I think it's a relatively minor revelation, but for others it can have major implications. If you've built your life around the idea of a fairy tale ending or a "Leave it to Beaver" 1950s family, you may go through a grief/mourning process when you realize you aren't going to get what you thought you could have.

And the stages of grief are:

  • Denial

  • Anger

  • Bargaining

  • Depression

  • Acceptance

TLDR: Realizing life isn't like the movies can amount to losing something important to you, which leads to grief. Anger is one of the stages of grief.

Hollywood is about making money. This is primarily done by making people want to watch things that make them feel good. The powerful influence of the content is a result of many factors, amongst which is the fact that it is usually not unambiguously fantastic. Fantasy regularly masquerades as reality and is interspersed with momentary representations of reality. This, of course, influences what people believe reality is.

Furthermore, children are not comprehensively taught about how and why media content is produced or how to filter it, whether that be the news or films. Subsequently, this hampers their ability to reliably distinguish between reality and fantasy. Naturally, many of the views that impressionable children form in their formative years will carry through to adulthood and are not easily shed. When it comes to relationships especially, most adults are not particularly good at distinguishing between reality and fantasy. The blue pill perspective about romantic love and relationships is more or less the Hollywood perspective, yet BPers here will tell you that Hollywood has not influenced them. They appear oblivious to the fact that Hollywood heavily promotes and endorses their “coincidental” view of things. The Red Pill represents a rejection of this perspective, which is a bitter pill to swallow for many, hence the anger.

So the question is really whether having to give up beliefs that were once held dear is reasonable grounds to be angry or, at least, disillusioned? If it were revealed to a BPers satisfaction that the views they held dear about relationships were false, would they be happy or sad about that? Remember, most self-declared RPers were once BPers. The difference is that Bpers are still holding on to the Hollywood fairy tale in one form or another.

Bottom line is that it’s impossible for society not to be influenced by Hollywood and the media more generally, given its prevalence. The influence is largely subliminal in how it insidiously establishes unquestioned premises and assumptions throughout society. It’s not unreasonable to think that there will be some turbulence if one breaks away or is broken away from this.

James Peck wrote of Noam Chomsky, “To confront a mind that radically alters our perception of the world is one of life’s most unsettling yet liberating experiences,” This can also be said of the red pill.

Many Blue Pillers are successful at finding relationships and sex despite their "false" world view.

That’s not the point or the contention with those who have swallowed the red pill.

The issue is, how would those Bpers feel if they learned that their relationship was a sham and the valuable things they believed about it were false?

[–]wtknightHardcore Romantic6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Right. I've never had an issue with men wanting to try a "different approach" with TRP. My issue is that they believe that their worldview describes all reality, when the experience of successful Blue Pillers suggests otherwise. If TRP wanted to have success, then asking successful Blue Pillers what worked for them would be just as beneficial, if not more so, than "swallowing a pill" and believing in Red Pill reality.

[–]gasparddelanuit1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right. I've never had an issue with men wanting to try a "different approach" with TRP. If TRP wanted to have success, then asking successful Blue Pillers what worked for them would be just as beneficial, if not more so, than "swallowing a pill" and believing in Red Pill reality.

Firstly, success means different things to different people, so what Bpers characterize as success, may be another person’s worst nightmare.

Secondly, this is more than just about “success”, whatever that means. This is also about living life based on reality, rather than shaky delusion. TRP is a subreddit with a particular approach to the red pill. Nevertheless, it believes that the red pill represents reality more accurately than the blue pill. Conversely, those with a blue pill perspective believe their view is closer to reality. This is simply a disagreement about what reality is, as occurs with any other worldview. Once you believe something to be true or closer to the truth, you are not going to ask for advice from an opposing perspective that you believe is false.

Lastly, one can have success despite their approach, rather than because of it. One's so called success can be based on delusion. Also, someone having success does not necessarily mean that they know why they are successful. A naturally attractive person who has given little thought to the ins and outs of dating, despite their untroubled success, is probably not best placed to give advice to a person less attractive than themselves. TRP seeks to dispassionately deconstruct the sexual market place in order to better understand it, so that men can make more informed decisions, whether one agrees with its analysis or not. This requires that they deal with reality, and deal with it in a way that is not typically seen when it comes to dating advice.

I think most men and women are more aware of why women are pursued.

The anger for men is that the things they value in themselves are not valued by women and that how they want to be treated romantically is not how women want to be treated even though women often claim it is.

Hollywood is meant to be about wish fulfillment

This is arguable. Have you never seen a Hollywood film that you've learnt something from?

I mean, stories generally, are meant to teach or portray something true (not in the sense of factually true, but... let's say "genuine"). Otherwise, why would we be fascinated by them?

[–]AnarchkittyBetter dead than Red1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The truths that makes a story interesting are meant to be interpreted, not taken literally. Truth has to be teased apart from the fiction that it has been woven into and filtered through the lens of reality before it is useful.

Hollywood is fantasy but it also reflects what people believe. It reflects your myths back at you. You are told that the world is fair and if your heart is in the right place and you put in the work you will win out in the end.

The lesson is: patiently suffer now in order to be happy later.

Hero's journey and all that.

It's then dizzying to discover that the world doesn't give a single shit about you, no matter how much you try to toe the line.

Men might be angrier because they are expected to tolerate more bullshit, work shitty jobs, go to wars, not complain, etc, to get rewarded but the reward never happens.

But women are pissed too because all the shit that is supposed to make their lives happy is also unrealistic.

I was a film snob from middle school onward, far more likely to indulge in Eraserhead or Solyaris than anything "Hollywood." If my bitterness arose from unmet wish fulfillment, it wasn't Hollywood doing it to me.

[–]CarkudoThe original opinionated omega1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

But Hollywood is not meant to be wish fulfillment. Modern Hollywood flicks are pretty much made of the just world hypothesis which teach viewers how they should behave in order to be rewarded in life. Wish fulfillment is when you have a Superman movie where the protagonist effortless balances his job and family matters whilst saving the world from evil alien overlords. A Superman movie where the protagonist gets overwhelmed by how much shit he has to deal with but then has a heartfelt talk with his mom and goes through a lot of suffering to get the girl in the end is not wish fulfillment - it's didactic. It teaches: "Value dem family values, be a good soldier, fight the good fight and life will reward you"

Wish fulfillment fiction does not attempt to be realistic. It does not strive to make "human" main characters because that's exactly what isn't wanted for wish fulfillment - you want a protagonist who the viewer can easily replace with him or herself. A Hollywood protagonist is usually not such a character. Look to lots of anime for those kinds of protagonists.

Wish fulfillment can present a reality that a viewer is familiar with, but altered slightly to fit the plot line and characters.

[–]wtknightHardcore Romantic2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is true, which is why it's kind of strange to me when I see people complain about it, as fiction and wish fulfillment have been around since humanity has had the ability to tell stories around a fire.

[–]MrB0gus1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]CarkudoThe original opinionated omega0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then it only stands to reason that people will expect fiction to be representative of life. Fiction has been used as didactic material since time immemorial. Since fiction is wish fulfillment, therefore some wish fulfillment is didactic, therefore you can't fault people for learning from wish fulfillment.

Decided to make this a top comment.

Remember the film "Ordinary People"? The ENTIRE POINT of the film is setting out how a normal UMC family deals with the loss of a child. And it's depicted in a very realistic, very human way. Same with a film like "Blue Valentine", the birth, life and death of a working class prole marriage.

And people around us tell us "yup, that is SO REAL." "Yup, that was REALISTIC". "Yup, that's how it's done. You wanna meet a chick? That's EXACTLY how you do it."

There have been numerous films which purport to depict how real people actually live real lives, including how men and women meet, date, fuck, fight, marry, divorce, break up, have families, work, play and die.

And then most of us grow up and realize movies are fiction, and start looking at real people in the real world to learn about reality. Movies are mirrors. They reflect an image of reality, but it is a limited part of it to begin with, and most movies are more like funhouse mirrors, distorting reality in different ways to fit their narratives.

Maybe it's because I grew up watching fantasy and sci-fi type movies but I never really had any trouble distinguishing movies from reality. When I saw idealized movies where a guy who was a nerd like me was able to get a hot girl who loved him for who he was, I didn't think "That's how the world works!", I thought "I wish that was how the world works". I've known for as long as I can remember that "Say Anything" (to use your favorite example) was as much of a fantasy as "Star Wars" or "Sesame Street".

Good programme. It cracks me up when all of these bloopers play dumb and pretend that film and television have no significant impact on people’s perception of the world and relationships. Having said that, maybe some of them are so oblivious that they truly believe this. After all, those who have been effectively brainwashed are the last to know that they have been brainwashed and may never come to realize it.

I do think some of the specific examples brought up like cartoon Disney films are silly but yes ultimately, if we're being real here, the media's influence cannot be ignored by anyone who is actually knowledgeable about the topic. All kinds of media (TV, movies, internet, magazines, newspapers, radio, whatever) shoves specific images in our face 24/7 based on through market research, focus groups, in the case of the internet targeted data on specific customers, and they even hire psychologists. There's even whole degrees on psychology for advertising. They formulate and target everything they put out.

And if it wasn't accepted by people who know what they're doing that the media can significantly influence the public, huge companies wouldn't spend so much money on product placement and advertising campaigns. The reason marketing is booming industry, and targeted advertising is so huge that it's Google's and Facebook's entire revenue stream, is because it works.

People don't like to think they're easily brainwashed, but they are. I am too. I have Apple and Samsung shit and I don't doubt for a second marketing played a part in my decisions to buy that stuff.

In fact while we're at it here's another Charlie Brooker show all about advertising.

As much as people claim that it is not true; the media influences our social perceptions in a very significant manner. Everything from the clothes we wear to the gadgets we buy in our homes are influenced by what we see in films, read in books, browse online, and watch on television, tells us what is supposed to be the new and hep thing to buy.

It also influences our social perceptions. The current trend in media is to show a simple and slovenly image of the American male. If our television shows were any indication of real life, all men would be idiots who couldn't make it through the day without some woman telling him what's right or wrong. Don't believe me? Ask Marge Simpson, Jill Taylor, or Carrie Heffernan...Homer, Tim, or Doug would be pretty pitiful men without their "better halves."

But I digress.

Here's the real point in reference to dating. Men wouldn't give a flying fuck about how dating and relationships are in the movies if women didn't say that they gave a damn about it. White women clowned when "Pretty Woman" came out in theaters, while Black men renamed the movie "Waiting To Exhale" "Waiting To Catch Hell" with the way that Black women acted up after seeing that movie.

Shit like that is why the other men I know get mad about the movies and TV. Either make some shit that's clearly fantastic and nobody will get twisted or just stop trying to make movies to tell people how they should act.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep otherwise major corporations wouldn't spend so much money on advertising and product placement. There's a reason every single rap video nowadays has a Beats speaker in it and everyone in the Lego Batman Movie had an iPhone and James Bond uses Sony everything. They're not stupid, if that shit didn't work to sell more products they wouldn't spend money on it.

In fact I was debating whether or not to include this but come to think of it, James Bond driving an Aston Martin also did a lot for their reputation. Aston Martin was a relatively unknown company at the time their cars first appeared in the movies. While most viewers obviously can't afford them, the popularity of James Bond made Aston Martin cool and so it drove sales among the people rich enough to afford their cars because when people see an Aston Martin the first thing they think of is James Bond and James Bond is cool.

You have to appreciate that films don't always clearly express what is fantasy and what is reality. Things can happen in a film that the creators didn't even think about because they were focusing on something else. Characters might do a certain thing, or might have a conversation, and to the writer, director, etc. its to progress the plot to a certain point but a viewer might take in the ideas from those words and actions as representative of reality.

Its kind of along the same lines as this. Most good fiction has lots of elements of truth and reality in it, and if you just pass off everything and anything as "well its fictional so we can make up our own rules" then don't be surprised when some people get confused.

[–]Subway_Bernie_Goetz0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not how propaganda works. It's more insidious than that. Here is an excellent example of how it works.

The tl;dr is this: Everyone knows that Baywatch was an unrealistic show. They took the sexiest actresses and models and made them lifeguards in that fictional universe. They portrayed that level of beauty as normal. But people weren't fooled by it. They knew it was a just a show. But then impressionable viewers who are smart enough to see through that part of it, they are passively accepting other parts because they aren't aware of them. Like the fact that the show portrays it as normal for lifeguards (who don't make that much) to wear really expensive designer clothes that you never see them wear more than once, and drive Corvette's. TV can fuck with your expectations when you aren't aware of the messages it's sending you.

Same with romance. Women all know that looking as hot as Rachel McAdams and getting a guy as hot as Ryan Gosling is just some glossy Hollywood fantasy. But then they passively accept the message that there is such thing as "true love" and a "soul mate." Then they go through life wondering if they have the "real thing" because if it were "true love," surely they would feel it.

How many romantic movies do girls see before they even get into their first romantic relationship? By the time they get their first "boyfriend" in 7th grade, they have already internalized a certain view of romance from media. You seem to think that everyone grows out of it, but I've seen plenty of people who still view relationships through a nonsense fairy tale lens. I wish people were as realistic as you think they are, but I don't think they are.

Since I am not a man, I am not in the best position to answer. If you believe the movies everybody in NYC has a giant apartment bigger than most houses no matter what income you make and people who get shot just get up and run after the bad guy. As for romance, women get subjected to tropey things like the ugly duckling can be transformed into the swan and attract prince charming. Or that the "nice" girl wins out or can tame the bad boy, it is absolute BS.

I think people get angry about these things because of the sheer time investment they make in consuming media.
