It's been argued that romantic comedies where nerdy guys win the heart of the popular girls are responsible for creating unrealistic expectations in dating. But I think there's also another aspect to consider.

There's a lot of tv series, novels or movies where you see regular looking guys who get laid too often and that creates unrealistic expectations for many male viewers. If you think of JD in Scrubs, Ross in Friends or Ted in How I Met Your Mother, you can imagine guys who are certainly not bad looking but not too above the average either with an n-count that is too high and doesn't reflect the reality of the regular man. After being subjected to that kind of fiction for years, it's not easy to face the reality of dating where only the elite of best looking guys can achieve that level of sexual variety. Or those who spend 90% of their free time trying to get laid.
