Yeah, I think this example looks like "marital counseling"... which kind of makes me cringe. It seems like so many women married to ABUSERS are pushed into "marital counseling", which often makes abusive situations WORSE.
[–]chateauduchatFDS Newbie15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
This is very important. Having counseling with abusers, especially narcissists, does not work. My ex narcissist was very adept at manipulating his own therapist. Narc ex suggested for us to get premarital counseling... I refused for many reasons. I know because the narc’s tactics, such as crazy-making, would be a point of the therapist to address the victim’s behavioral response to the abuse, not the abuse itself. It would provide an environment for gaslighting. And simply put enough, I knew that if a therapist was adept enough to know the abuse I was handed, she would tell me to leave. That it was not going to get any better. These are things I already knew at the time.
I was not going to waste my time and rehash and go through the painful abuse just for my narc ex to finally realize what I have been telling him repeatedly to stop doing and to respect me, to not verbally abuse me, physically, emotionally... to treat me like a human being... you cannot teach a man these things. It is no one’s job but his parent's.
You must be careful from going to therapy with these monsters. They are clever and can learn tactics from well meaning therapists that further can send you down a rabbit hole of brainwashing and gaslighting and crazy making that will make you lose your sanity, to make it look like YOU are the problem, not them.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes... the scenario you describe is extremely common when it comes to women attempting marital therapy with emotional abusers.
[–]buy_me_cookiesFDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, it does hurt. You've got to MAKE SURE your relationship isn't abusive before going in to counseling with someone. A marriage counselor we saw decided almost immediately that my husband is wonderful and I'm a horrible person. She literally turned to him and said "I can tell you're a very kind, loving man". Turns out, he's profoundly emotionally and financially abusive, has hit me twice, lies and cheats and steals. She was more than happy to help in his gaslighting of me. I've been reading Verbal Abuse by Patricia Evans, she has this page that discussed the harms it can do. I'm thinking of sending the book to that counselor like Evans suggests, even if it feels a little kooky to do so, because of how utterly damaging her actions were.

Exactly. They will play the victim and shift the blame onto you. Walking away is the best option. Save your energy into getting yourself together and moving on from this toxic relationship rather than confronting them(which is pretty useless tbh)

Yes. And DON'T succumb to the urge to play "therapist" to a man who seems incapable of communicating like an adult. No woman should have to put in the time and effort to play psy ops with a man just to try to make him treat her like a human. If he can't be respectful and kind once you're in a relationship with him, he's already a lost cause and a waste of time.
Also be aware many men will "flip a switch" as soon as they feel their girlfriend is "trapped" in the relationship with them. They KNOW many women fall for the "sunk cost fallacy", so they let their facade of kindness, caring, respect and fidelity fall off.
[–]WillingBeingFDS Newbie75 points76 points77 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Just a reminder that therapists and counselors are only human, meaning they can be sexists and pickmes like anyone else. If you’re a woman, be doubly aware that even well-meaning counselors have difficulty with women feeling and expressing anger. (Think about the stereotype of our emotionality and the fact that we’re not socially permitted to feel the ONE emotion we let men express freely.)
Studies also show that therapists will often focus on the woman in couples therapy rather than LVM behavior. SHE’S the one that needs to modify how she behaves — even if it’s in response to his wrongdoing. Push back or leave any counselor that disproportionately makes you responsible for saving the relationship.
[–]notbasic4karenFDS Newbie22 points23 points24 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Omg yes. Tbh I haven’t found therapy very helpful for this reason. It’s always “have you tried communicating to your (now ex) husband that it hurts you when he lets his mom treat you like shit and doesnt care that you’re upset?” Me: “so me literally saying ‘it hurts me when your mom treats me like shit and you don’t care’ isn’t cOmMuNiCaTiNg enough? If not, he’s just stupid and nothing I say will make a difference. dumps both therapist and husband
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's like people think women talk in an ancient long-forgotten foreign language, or that we are somehow bereft in vocabulary, therefor our statements to our partners consist of "inadequate communication".
OR, as many women experience, being upfront and "communicating" will result in immediate retaliation from men-- whether it be fists, nasty words, passive-aggressive put-downs, the silent treatment, character assassination.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

YES. And domestic violence experts like Lundy Bancroft warn that abusers become more abusive once couples enter "marital therapy". Abusers just learn more tools and psychological tricks to use against their victims.

No, usually I did before they did — by which I mean I don’t exist to hear them whine about their self-created problems either. Being supportive only holds up for so long when the sitch is fully self-imposed. “You’re so lucky you’re single!” Babes, it ain’t luck — I’d be single to my last day before I’d choose a relationship like THAT.

Thank you! It isn’t easy, as we all know. Women get lazy in relationships/friendships, too, and those of us on the outside have to take care not to get drawn down their whirlpool of suckage — not even in the name of being a “good example.” Certainly not in the name of just “being with” anyone.

Yeah, a woman recovering from abuse etc is better off finding a female therapist who is able to empathise with female patients due to their shared female experiences. Empathy and understanding is so important in allowing a patient to successfully recover.

Always use female doctors, always. No exceptions. It’s not just a political statement, they also have to work twice as hard and be twice as smarter to get those positions and I want the best doctor treating me.
With all other choices also choose female professionals. Demand female teachers for your kids. Use female lawyers, use female realtors, use female everything. Make a statement with your wallets until this slimy culture changes.
[–]redpeithosFDS Apprentice62 points63 points64 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Totally! For some time, I was seeing the same male doctor about my anxiety. At one point, he asked if he could hug me, for no particular reason. I didn't know that I could (and should have) said no, but I felt so weird afterwards. From then on, I would only see female doctors afterwards.
[–]madamejesaistoutFDS Newbie19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I wonder if men actually feel better from touch or if they just believe that their bodies have healing powers for women?
[–]redpeithosFDS Apprentice16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Huh, I never thought about it like that. All I knew is that I felt weird afterwards. After some consideration, one realises that the same male doctors are far less likely to hug a male university student, for example. It also doesn't help that I'm petite.
[–]madamejesaistoutFDS Newbie8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well it's inappropriate for any doctor, unless physical touch was a formal part of the practice (I can imagine hugging being part of a specialized form of therapy).
I was associating it with movies where a woman is upset so a man kisses her without consent and suddenly she's better. I wish we didn't have movies like that.
[–]lluuniFDS Newbie12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You also literally have a better chance of surviving a medical situation with a female doctor. If that’s not enough to convince someone to choose female professionals I don’t know what will.

Male doctors told me a blood clot in my eye was a migraine without referring me for any cardiovascular tests. I see my female primary care doc and she's like, hold up. Something is wrong.
I was never sold on the "migraine" explanation because it looked way too different from any other migraine I'd had. If not by total chance, I would have let the words of male doctors potentially let a life-threatening condition fester and grow without questioning a thing because they went to medical school. It's been a year since I had the blood clot and I only just got an echocardiogram.
So I'm a bit salty with men in the medical profession right now, because I highly doubt they'd brush off a man briefly losing sight in one eye as "anxious" or "having a migraine".
I mean men in the medical profession assuming I was bad at math instead of actually checking me for vision loss is why I have vision loss now...

I've known of a LOT of young women who developed cancer and multiple sclerosis and other pervasive diseases-- many of whom went from doctor to doctor to doctor and were blown off as "mentally unstable" "hypochondriac", etc.. Finally either the problem progressed to an extreme point, or they finally found a doctor who took them seriously. They'd come into the office with reams and reams of paper filled with old medical records because they "learned the hard way", knowing doctors would question their self-described medical histories and/or simply not believe them. Then you have doctors who seem to assume EVERY young woman with self-described medical problem is "just a drug seeker".
This proved problematic to my kid as well. Nurse practitioner at a weekend clinic doubted my child's illness severity when I brought him in for a cold w/ low grade fever, refused to prescribe antibiotics "because this is just a virus", told me my kids "one ear is so dirty!" with some scorn. Had to bring him to a regular pediatrician two days later. Turned out he had a massive EAR INFECTION that had been festering. I
t's like not only do they question your own medical history as a woman, they also infantilize and dismiss your concerns as a MOTHER.
My sister suspected her daughter was deaf from infancy. Her pediatrician blew her off over and over again as an "anxious mother". Needless to say, by the time her kid was two, she had a cochlear implant. Her child was likely born DEAF, but none of her doctors believed her. My sister also had her master's degree in education, so she wasn't as if she was some paranoid ignorant woman with no concept of child development. Yet her word still wasn't good enough.

Find a therapist that works for you! Don’t settle because it’s who you told your journey to, or because that’s the closest therapist or that’s who your insurance wants you to see. FIND SOMEONE ELSE. [edit for typos]

So glad you have a great relationship with your therapist! I extensively researched therapists in my network. I picked a few to call and discuss their therapy style, learn a little bit about them personally, and ask if they pursued continuing education before ever going in. Edit: and it resulted in the perfect therapist for my needs <3

That’s amazing! When I needed a therapist I didn’t have the energy to commit to finding someone and was so heartbroken I just needed someone. My drs office recommended an office over an hour away and I called but was told they didn’t have an opening and weren’t likely too. I did a google search called and found out they took my insurance. Day I showed up I was SO nervous like about ready to bolt. And the waiting room was empty. Thank goodness. And the music that played was music from all of Fred Astaire’s movies (I am a huge fan) and my guy was late late late and when he came out I teased him about it and he teased back and that was the start to a beautiful friendship ;)

Relationships / dating: learn who they really are their actions will show it. Decide if that meets your standards as communicating / couples therapy will not change you or a man. Does anyone know any couples that actually had real lasting success from couples counseling? I've only seen divorces from those couples.
[–]Wiggy_BopFDS Newbie18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I once read that the problem with marriage/couples counseling is usually one partner has already left the relationship, metaphorically. So that leaves the other partner still in the relationship, thinking things can be worked out.
Usually the dissatisfied partner will go to counseling out of guilt, or as a way to ease out of the relationship and they can say they ‘tried’.

One couple and it’s because they essentially sided with the woman. This shocked people because outwardly his passive aggressiveness made him seem like the nice guy victim and the wife’s reactions to him made her the “crazy bitch” (sound like a familiar pattern?). Amazingly they found a therapist who saw through his manipulative behavior. When he adjusted himself then suddenly he has this pleasant, even tempered wife because he was no longer making her insane.

That sounds like a good guy with some bad habits, probably from the way he was raised. At least he was open minded enough to actually admit he was wrong, and he worked on himself.
That’s a successful couples consoling, IMO. 👍🏽

Yeah I think so too. Also I recall they lost a baby (not a miscarriage which is bad enough but a 1 yr old) and that’s what seemed to start the downward spiral.
I think if there’s an obvious life trigger then stuff can be resolved because it’s different from just being a former pickmeisha who woke up and realized he’s been LVM from day one and she ignored every red flag.
[–]notochordFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Two of my friends see a couples counselor every few months prophylacticly just to talk. They report it’s a good opportunity for them to fine tune their communication and work out any grievances before they become major issues. The wife in marriage is actually a female doctor and I’m pretty sure it was her idea for them to attend counseling together since her profession is so mentally and emotionally taxing.

I wouldn't resort to childish talk like that. It won't improve a decent relationship and it sure as hell won't improve a shitty relationship. If the man can't talk to you with respect and clear communication, my view is that you should exit the situation once you've expressed your feelings and needs. If he can't put the pieces together in his mind by himself once I've explained and then left the situation, I won't push him or try to teach him or mother him. But I also won't call him a boy or get lame about it either. No time for that. If he sucks then I won't be hanging around having kiddy arguments with him.
[–]kwalden2FDS Newbie24 points25 points26 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This is the internet, so the argument is made to sound much harsher and more cutting than it would on real life, but as a married woman I'm definitely here to tell you something.
It is absolutely not wrong or uncommon for a married woman to need to politely say "I don't appreciate the way you seem to be taking problems out on me that you haven't even discussed with me. You're grown, and you need to get your own behavior together." Even good husbands make mistakes, and calling that out is important. I agree there's got to be a way to do that without sounding sarcastic, rude, and juvenile, but that's not the point.
[–]ivy176FDS Disciple6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Been married, am engaged. Just don't want women to assume it's empowering to talk in really immature ways in relationships. Plus these types of memes are why people target FDS. But there are certainly times where you have to let your partner know that they're behaving in an unacceptable way. I just don't bring anything about age into it and I don't do dirty fighting or petty arguing. I express my feelings clearly and directly and if he doesn't respond in a considerate understanding way, then I leave him alone to make sense of things himself. Because I believe that if a man cares about me, I won't have to explain my basic feelings and needs in 10 different ways in order to get him to understand me. I did that in my ex marriage (abusive marriage) so I'm adamant about not having to convince a person to care about me or understand me and I won't get into petty arguments or demeaning stuff
🙌
Gotta always remember “No JADE” - no justifying, arguing, defending or explaining. Simple state feelings, needs and preferences and see what he does with that.
Might as well add no teaching and no low blows that stoop to his level.

I don't agree with talking down to another adult just because they act stupid, but I've had so many people say "well have you talked about it?" "Have you tried communicating?" "Were you NICE about it when you were talking?" "Why can't you just ASK him to do the thing?"
Yes, we talked. Yes, I was polite because that's how I want to be treated. Yes, communication was used, as well as writing it out and making note reminders.
And why can't I ask? Because I did. I lost track of how many times I asked a grown man to be an adult and take care of himself, his home, and his child. How many more times do I have to basically beg another adult to act like a fucking adult?
