It's was already a screwed up situation before the potentially haunted wedding ring came into play. I hate this about men. Clearly he waited til last minute then scrambled to buy something but wanted something cheap like the cheap ass that he is. And the family knew that an engraved ring was worth less than a new one so he prob managed to haggle it down to that price. It’s all very disturbing and I would be so pissed honestly. Would definitely make him return it and rectify the situation. It’s sad that she only asked for a simple ring despite splurging on his gift as another comment mentioned.
