Last year my then boyfriend turned up really late to the dinner that I booked for myself and then gave some some stamps (collectible I guess?) alongside a much better gift from his parents. He was also in an absolutely foul mood and ruined the whole day - never again. I had arranged some really nice presents for his birthday, as well as baking his fav cake and arranging for his parents to see him (safely) on the day.

Absolute yikes with time and distance, and it broke my heart at the time, but it gives me no end of joy/peace to know I never have to deal with this again.

The last one broke up with me shortly after my birthday via text message when I brought up the fact he hadn't done anything for it but buy me a cheap necklace from Amazon. But he paid extra for Sunday delivery... dude we've all got Prime and you couldn't be bothered to look at my wishlist. That was 5 years ago and now I celebrate every year with close family and friends.

My last ex said “happy birthday” in the morning, and that was it. Nothing planned, no gift. When I got home later, my family had thrown me a surprise party, and showered me with so much love and kind words, it made me realize how much more they cared about me then the man who claimed to love me.

I told him that I wanted to break it off that night, he drove over from 3 hours away to convince me that it wasn’t his fault because he “thought birthdays were meant for children”. I bought his gaslighting, and was swayed by an expensive emerald necklace in the shape of a heart, even though I’d told him repeatedly that I thought heart jewelry was tacky.

This is so important, otherwise you’ll be on a certain sub for mother’s who lament in the fact their husbands do nothing for their birthday, Valentine’s, anniversaries, and even Mother’s Day! And try it normalise it. If a man doesn’t even bother to acknowledge my birthday he’s in the trash.

Every time something celebration-worthy happened in my life, my last ex would say "we should celebrate". And then do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Not even a card or a bouquet from the gas station.

For my ex's big birthday, I spent about 4k. Limos, penthouse hotel suite etc. I have no clue why, he was a horrible person. I guess it's what I would have wanted, and he expressed he felt sad about turning that age and wanted to do something eventful.

I said hey make sure you do something like this when I turn this age because I'm scared too, and I haven't done anything for my birthday for years. He promised he would. After that, he didn't get me a birthday present for 4 years (then we broke up a year before that birthday would come around).

I started dating someone else, we were a year in and I told him about what happened back then, and that I was feeling a bit bummed about turning 30. I told him what I did for my ex and mentioned that ultimately it doesn't matter because I'm not a hotel/limo type of person anyway. So he surprised me with a holiday at this retreat place and he bought all the food and took it with us in cooler bags, and he cooked us breakfast every morning, made lunch, and had these fancy dinners delivered from a local restaurant. He made a playlist of songs and organised some places to visit in the area. It wasn't a room service kinda place, like a luxury cabin in the woods, so he planned everything in advance and I just sat in a pool in the trees all day, sipping on drinks he'd bring me, it was great! I get quite anxious on vacation and can't relax, but that was the one time where I was bummed about going home.

I have a friend who is genuinely the sweetest girl I have ever met. She loves giving gifts to everybody and never forgot a birthday. For her birthday with her boyfriend of three years she bought them ramen and rented a movie. He couldn’t even spend the 20 bucks to cover that. I don’t even think she realized how sad that was.

I wonder if he would have done this if u swapped batman for something "girly" like sailor moon (my childhood fav). in my experience, guys are incredibly dismissive / condescending / demeaning when some of your interests align with your gender role (pink gaming set up, crafting, whatever)

edit: despite having having all these girly interests, for my bday my lvm would get me like, a crockpot (never used it), a digital scale, a smart watch. Tools to keep me busy and out of his way. When we broke up I left them so he can give them to his mom or next gf, don't care, also he was being really petty over dumb shit like taking the bedroom furniture i paid for

This is amazing. On a somewhat related note, my parents dressed both my sister and me up as Batman for Halloween as children. 😂 They're conservative but good in certain ways. Never pushed gender roles.
